Hey, I just got my first mech kb: a HHKB - what's up!?
« on: Tue, 24 November 2015, 17:38:40 »
Howdy all..  After many, many years of using whatever keyboard my desktop computers came with, I finally decided to try one of these mechanical keyboards I've heard about.  I spent a great deal of time researching, and ended up kinda frustrated with all the options and decided on a HHKB Pro Japan.  I didn't really notice the JIS layout and switched that back to ANSI, but I lost a few of the extra keys (conversion, unconversion, kana, backslash).  I'm here to get some help!   ;D

You don't consider Hall Effect to be mechanical either, I guess?

Welcome to Geekhack!

HHKB is said by many to be The Ultimate Rubber Dome keyboard.

Unfortunate acronym.  Great keyboard!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
