[GB] GMK Café (Nearing Completion - Updated Thread)
« on: Mon, 23 September 2019, 11:32:39 »
Current group buy status:

There are clearly issues with the spacebars of this set for some, if not many people. Please continue to post pictures of the issues so we can share them with GMK as we work with vendors to correct these issues. I would like to get everyone the product they expected. Please be patient with me - I'm working on it <3

Updated August 7th, 2020

As coffee Café gained popularity in Italy in the 16th century, clergymen pushed the church to ban this new, scary drink as "satanic." This discussion was brought all the way to the Pope himself: Clement VIII. The literal freakin' Pope took one sip and found this beverage so wonderful he remarked how they should "baptize it and keep it for themselves." Café is incredible enough to change the mind of a pope and it's darn sure wonderful enough to put on your keyboard, too.

Welcome to the Group Buy thread for GMK Café!

The set is available from these wonderful folks:

US- Cannonkeys https://cannonkeys.com/
EU - mykeyboard.eu https://mykeyboard.eu/
Asia - iLouis with iLumkb https://ilumkb.com/
Australia - DailyClack https://dailyclack.com/
Canada (I know, eh?!) - DeskHero https://www.deskhero.ca/

Sales Numbers

Colors Used

Alphas: L9
Modifiers: RAL 8019 https://www.ralcolorchart.com/ral-classic/ral-8019-grey-brown
Accents: RAL 1001 https://www.ralcolorchart.com/ral-classic/ral-1001-beige

Kits

Prices

With Cream (base kit, MOQ 250) because who doesn't like a touch of cream in their coffee? $125  MOQ MET

"Wait a second...do I see two TAB keys in that base kit?"

Why yes, you do! Since there is an option for the Black kit to be purchased in addition to the With Cream kit, you would be able to cover two full keyboards (up to TKL and 65% with different bottom rows) using the caps you would receive - with the exception that you'd be missing a second TAB key. Without adding cost, we were able to add in a second TAB key to add value to those who purchase both the With Cream and Black kits. <3

Sugar (numpad/ISO, MOQ 100) for those in the world who like a little sweet in their life. $48

Black (dark alphas, MOQ 100) for anyone who doesn't want none of that crap in their cup. $66

Extra Shots (spacebars, MOQ 100) to give it a little extra kick. $23 MOQ MET

Special Blends (40s/ortho, MOQ 100) to cover different palates. $52

Quick note: the current renders don't show the presence of scooped homing keys for both the base and dark kit. All F & J alphas will have homing - both bar and scooped will be in the kits. I am working to update the renders to show this correctly.

RAMA Caps

Important note: the cap colors will be matched by RAMA to the GMK caps we provide once we've locked in the colors after the matching process is complete.

préparer - French for to prepare, ready, make, set, get ready, and of course...brew - ANSI R3 Enter $52 MOQ MET

Bean - Row 1 $38 MOQ MET

Deskmat

Why worry about spilling coffee on your deskmat anymore when you can already have a stained one so you don't feel bad about it?! $17

More

Here's color comparison to black (CR) and white (WS1). The Café colors are on the top.

Color Matching

This is round one of our color matching process - we anticipate round two since they could be just a bit closer than they are now, but we're very happy with the first attempt and are confident that we will match the chosen RAL colors. These pictures were taking in full sunlight.

11.5.2019 - Round 2 color samples are inbound!

Damn I was super excited for the Canadian vendor but it seems their prices are actually worse than just buying from the US vendor and having it shipped to Canada when buying multiple kits, maybe in the future it's value will come from avoiding duty fees (and instead paying regular taxes) but for this buy it seems il be going through Canonnonkeys, looking forward to it, GLWGB!

Hey Potato!

Yea pricing is a weird one, and I wanted to make sure pricing was just as good if not better than grabbing from US proxies traditionally but obviously theres currency/exchange fees thats normally hidden when purchasing in USD. Then the inherent shipping costs and duty/custom fees (UPS/Fedex + CBSA, which is usually $10) thats not really seen until after the purchase.

I tried to use standard "Canada Tax" that we're all used to paying for US goods. Which is about 5-10%, and I tried to round down when I could.

So ya, really hoping I can support the Canadian market by offering US like-prices, and add value by having quicker shipping (all within Canada and avoid 2 customs inspects from Germany -> US -> Canada) and removing any hidden fees.

I know it kinda looks like a cheap cash grab, but its tough - I'm trying guys!

Really hoping Canada has a good market for this kinda stuff as my store is a niche within a niche heh

Also lowkey looks like the nines and Olivia had a baby and made this.

Lovely to see Canadian support emerging! Like you have alluded to, for the sake of such a minor difference in costs to the end user, with the advantage of localised shipping it should be a no-brainer for people in the region.

Unless mentioned otherwise (like those silicone caps), you can safely assume that they are milled alu.

Yes, because the deskmats ship before the caps and they also weigh much more than the caps. It's unfortunate that they cost so much to ship, but the price before shipping is quite reasonable. The other vendors also do something similar BTW.

Cannonkeys deskmat policy changed pretty recently. I think you ordered before the policy change.

Color Matching

This is round one of our color matching process - we anticipate round two since they could be just a bit closer than they are now, but we're very happy with the first attempt and are confident that we will match the chosen RAL colors. These pictures were taking in full sunlight.

So although it was said ' you would be able to cover two full keyboards (up to TKL and 65% with different bottom rows) using the caps you would receive ', it looks like there's only 1 regular 2u backspace.. So if we wanted to fill a TKL + 65%, most likely one of those keyboards will have to have split backspace correct? Not complaining, just making sure. Already joined for both creame + black!

Correct :) Usually one of the main things missing for a "double build" is the TAB, including that with the dark alpha's helps a lot :) You'll also be missing stuff like nav cluster etc. So in order to fill 2 boards one has to be split backspace and at the most a 65% / 1800 mini (like a Cypher/Dharma for example).

Base and dark alphas look like regular keys and bar’d (on the dark alphas, over on the right) but no deep dish for either ?

Homing key color contrast alone won't help touch-typers.

Non-barred F & J profiles in "With Cream" and "Black" kit renders appear to have identical non-dished profiles.

Langelandia, please clarify if the non-barred F & J are dished or standard profile.

The renders are showing incorrectly.

The set will contain both homing bars and scoops for the light alphas and dark both. I will ask to have the renders updated to reflect this, but the order will be placed to contain both types of homing and will not contain F & J keys without homing assistance.

Thanks for asking the questions, y'all - hope that will clear it all up =)

In the spacebars kit, is the 1.25u space really convex? In the renders it looks non-convex (is it just the way I'm perceiving the lighting?) though it's labeled as 1.25c. In the IC thread I saw people had posted their own labeling/interpretations of various space bars/keys, but the 1.25u key wasn't specifically identified as convex.

Should be convex. I think what happened is that GMK made the new convex mold after the render was made.  Same thing happened to GMK Voyage. GMK just announced the new mold in late August/early June so this kit render probably just missed that date. I know Cafe's kits had been ready for a while.

According to a post on DailyClack discord it's been pushed to June 29th but I'm not sure if that date is for when it's shipped or when it's estimated to arrive at DC.

I believe its still shipping the 28th of may but its taking up to 3 weeks to get to the US, so its likely late June before customers receive the sets.  I have no idea how this affects ex-US vendors.

how are we looking for shipping to vendors on May 28? Any delays that we should know about?
According to a post on DailyClack discord it's been pushed to June 29th but I'm not sure if that date is for when it's shipped or when it's estimated to arrive at DC.

I believe its still shipping the 28th of may but its taking up to 3 weeks to get to the US, so its likely late June before customers receive the sets.  I have no idea how this affects ex-US vendors.

Good to know, thanks a lot for the reply guys! The end of June can't come soon enough.

Just saw that these keycaps existed. Is there a chance vendors will have some extra base kits to purchase?

I'm not very impressed by the warped spacebars on my set + spacebar kit
Nice colours tho, definitely the best looking set I've seen

I don't know why GMK just don't acknowledge the ****ty spacebars. Every GB has warped keys. No need to gather more information. Just make new space bars to every participant and fix your manufacturing process.

My GMK WoB from Drop had also very ****ty spacebars. The last time when they where perfect, was GMK Nautilus. They go a bit downhill. :(

It's so bad it's noticable even before I got it out of the tray.

I have emailed mykeyboard.eu twice regarding my order being wrong and have not had a reply in two weeks.  I can also confirm that my space bars are warped in the same way as well.  A response is required.

MyKeyboard are best reached in their discord

Thank you, I contacted them via Discord and got a good response, they are sending me the missing set.

Pretty sure most vendors have extras, Idk how soon they'd put them for sale tho.

I have the same warping issue on my spacebars as well, unfortunately:

6u center-stem white spacebar

6u off-center-stem white spacebar

6.25u white spacebar

6.25u gold spacebar

7u white spacebar

7u gold spacebar

For comparison's sake, this is an old 7u spacebar from GMK Oblivion R1:

I don't want  to sound like a broken record, but when you claim to have warped spacebars, can we at least verify that it has an impact first?

I had warped 9009 spacebars if you placed on a flat surface, but there is no interference or issue when you actually used them. Also, once put on a board, you could not see any visual issues.

I presume people actually use spacebars rather than just put them on display cases to show off how flat they are.

I think the issue is that the price for the base kit was 124$, extra spacebars were like 25$, and most people got another kit or two. Spending 200$ on a set of keycaps for a keyboard, you kind of have an expectation for quality, and with how warped those bars are, that expectation is not being met.

If all people cared about was basic function of the key - to press down on the switch and actuate it - then people would just go get a 25$ set of cheap ABS keycaps.

I suppose it may vary from person to person. Some people in this thread appear to have less warping than I do, while others seem to have more. So I can only speak for my own stuff below:

Here is GMK Classic Retro (non-warped spacebar). For reference, the bottom of the spacebar is fairly in-line with the surrounding case.

When swapping in the GMK Cafe gold spacebar, even if you press down pretty hard across the entire surface, it's never quite level. Especially after some short-term usage you can start to see it ride up a bit.

During one test when I was hitting it repeatedly, it became partially dislodged on the other side:

I tried using it normally for maybe a couple of hours, and honestly, for the most part it's fine. That said, I occasionally get strange-feeling presses when the bar shifts a little, and I have to press the whole thing down again. The most obvious thing though is the front aesthetic - that becomes uneven very quickly, though some may not care about that as much. It's sort of hard for me to ignore (personally) so I'm going to try to flatten them out. Not a huge deal -- but I do hope it's an issue GMK can fix in future sets.

What does the comment about someone buying child kits have anything to do with spacebars? Does someone who buys the novelty kit become more deserving of straight spacebars than someone who buys just the base kit?

The expectation is that they work correctly and without issue and also look straight when placed on a keyboard. If you have the expectation that they must also be perfectly straight when you display them, then you should confirm with the GB runner that they will meet that expectation before you order.

Technically there is no physical relationship between child kits and space bars. But space bars are part of the base kit and there is an assumption about the quality of the base kit that helps justify the purchases of the child kits. When something integral about the base kit falls short, it makes one a bit more upset they threw money at the child kits.

That being said, I bought Café and received it a few days ago. I have warped space bars in the base kit and the alt alphas kit. sigh.

I just wish GMK manufacturing and QA would improve.

My kit has some slight warping with my space bars too, but so does the last 10 GMK sets I’ve received (not important, but it’s a expectation at this point). I put them on the board and they look straight and work exactly how I expect so I don’t mind. Not saying others should or shouldn’t care, but my expectations are met for a ~$3 piece of colored plastic.

Just received my cafe, and all my space bar are warp as well, it makes the space key sticky or not returning...
This to me is unacceptable, especially at its price point. None of my previous sets from last year had this issue.

Everyone,

There are clearly issues with the spacebars of this set for some, if not many people. Please continue to post pictures of the issues so we can share them with GMK as we work with vendors to correct these issues. I would like to get everyone the product they expected. Please be patient with me - I'm working on it <3

Hey everyone,

It's hard for me to associate geekhack usernames with orders placed on CannonKeys.

So, with that in mind, if you ordered from CannonKeys and have any issues with your GMK Cafe set, PLEASE send in a support ticket containing:
1. images of the warped spacebars on a flat surface / images of the issue you are seeing
2. your order number.

Without this information, I can't easily track this issue. I'll gather information for a couple weeks then send it along to GMK.

Once that's done, we'll see what GMK has to say.

Thanks,
Upas

LOL. It's straight when it is sitting flat against flat surface. Anything else = warped.

Imagine buying a new car with dents on it and the seller is like:
"CaN WE aT LeasT vERIFY THAt IT has AN IMPacT fIRsT?
If YoU HaVe THE expECTAtioN ThAT theY MUST AlSo be peRFECTLy StRAIGHt When yOu DIsPlAY theM, thEn yoU sHOuLd conFiRm wITH the gb rUNNER thAt they WILL meEt thAT ExPEctatIOn bEFore you ORDeR."

I have bought a ton of Lego for my kids and every single piece has been straight. And I expect every single piece to be flat and fit to other pieces nicely. How can kids toys have better quality than small production run of caps that some people use to do work.

If it is so focking hard to do straight caps then adjust the price accordingly. Now it's clearly a gamble but GMK, designers and vendors will never say this. So it's impossible for buyers to adjust theirs expectations.

Because you should not get scuffed product when paying such a high price. You dont buy a car and accept faulty things do you? It does not matter if fix is easy or hard, but mentality to accept such things will only make this issues continue and increase on every set. GMK needs to accept and fix this.

Hey guys,

Thanks to everyone who submitted photos! Please keep them coming if you have issues.
We can be reached at support@cannonkeys.com

I have some followup guidelines for photos that I'd like to be followed for consistency:

Please take photos on a flat surface and don't press on one side, let it lie flat, free standing on a flat surface.

This will help us submit consistent photos to GMK and help them evaluate next steps.

Any photos we receive that don't meet these requirements will get sent these standards. Please help us communicate effectively with GMK!

Thanks!

I think that letting the bar sit flat makes it harder to see the warp and doesn't necessarily indicate how the bar will sit after extended use. Different people may strike the spacebar in different spots, and at least in my case, after some usage it eventually does shift between the stems in an uneven fashion that is more consistent with holding down one end than letting it sit flat on a table.

For example these are my same bars if you leave them flat - the same bars from here (holding them down on one end) and here (what happens after some use, at least in my case - I can't speak for others).

So I have no knowledge of what the tolerance is for warpage, but mine looked pretty bad when i pressed down on one of the sides, especially for my 7u one, but here's when I lay it flat:

Is this cause for concern? 7u still looks wonky for sure

EDIT: well after a couple presses on the 6.25u spacebar the stab wire popped so im assuming that it is indeed a problem

Hey, Langelandia, I am a coffee fan and I heard that rama won't let make same rama artisans as in r1 but i really want that coffee bean because I couldn't get it anywhere, there were even no extras on my proxies (asked last year many times). How are you planning to change it maybe inverse colors or make one bean (this would work probably) haha? Or object decision? I just want my bean artisan haha XD

has anyone got any response from GMK/vendors about the spacebar issues?

GMK won't do anything about any spacebars as I understood. Only ones they cared for was 9009

The only problem I have is IFK version is a bit too light in color compare to GMK version where it looks a lot more creamy.
