[IC] SA Grey Accent (Colors and Kits updated: 2018.5.25)
« on: Mon, 14 May 2018, 08:09:33 »

Hello folks, I'm really happy to share my recent work.

The main idea was to use grey as accents,
so there is no concrete reference for this set, such as an old terminal keyboard, a specific image, or a character.
I’m just a big fan of deep blue… and I hope you like it.
Since I've hungered for a neat Korean(Hangul, exactly)-legend keycap set, there's Hangul kit as an alternative for alphas.
The idea for the layout is from typewriters and Symbolics Lisp Machine.

Here are the colors I've decided so far:
  • alpha base - custom
  • alpha legend - BFM
  • mod base/accent legend - WA
  • accent base - GRY
  • mod legend/more grey base - GSZ
The significant change on color is that the base color of modifier is changed from pure white to pink-like white,
which was one of major ideas from the very beginning phase of the design.

Here are my kits.
If you have any suggestion, pease feel free to post! It would be a great help.

I think you have two pics of the same mod kit. Or is it something I'm not seeing?

Unfortunately there is no mold for Hangul, but it would be harder to dye-sub them as the legends are lighter than the base.
We need 26 new molds, but price would be reasonable if there's enough GB participants (at least 100, IMO)

Yeah, about 13$ per person at 100 units. I'm in for one.

Absolutely! I'm totally in for Hangul - it's about time we had a decent Hangul set! Thanks!!!

Love the blue - not so crazy about the light grey mods - too stark - almost looks white.
For me - All the mods should be in the darker grey...
The mods that are currently in the darker grey would be great in a contrasting red accent... (Esc, Enter, etc.)

As regards SP - Please make sure they agree to re-run and fix their legend alignment screw-ups...
I'm so sick of their lack of attention to detail.

This looks really nice.

Most of the mods look white to me, or close to it. And I actually think that looks really good with the blue. It's a great contrast. And mods like that would mix so well with any number of colored alphas from other SA sets. That's something I would very much like to have.

Any possibility for UK-ISO and Icon Arrows? Overall, great design!

Of course I should put ISO kits and icon arrows (with both white and grey).
Thanks for letting me know!

Ah, that would be a great idea. I will try renders with a darker one.
Also, I'll put darker grey color chips on my cart :))

I didn't know there's such an issue!
Are those legends tilted or rotated?

In for sure. would love to see a "dark grey" kit or just more dark grey, as you mentioned.

Edit: have you considered dark grey mods with light grey accents (enter, spacebar, esc, etc...)

I also love that idea! So we'll have two different modifiers for one alphas :))
At the same time, I'm not sure we could make it happen since modifiers kits are really expensive (more than I expected) and fall sharply in proportion to the number of participants.

Or maybe it would be possible to make "darker grey accent kit" ?

I like the shade of blue and I really like the light gray.  I would prefer to see the modifiers with the same font color as the main blue on the alphas.  Otherwise it just feels like you've mixed keycaps from two different sets.  The modifiers and the alphas seem to have nothing in common to tie them together.  But then again, using blue text for modifier legends would lose a lot of the gray you have which is coming from modifier text.  I'm watching the IC to see where it goes.

Looks lovely to me! I especially love the grey accents for the white mods. I could totally handle more grey too like grey 1u backspace to put next to 1u delete on my number row.

The main thing it's missing for me is a 2.25u and 2.75u keys in grey for my split spacebars. They could be either shift keys, blanks (cheap!) or proper convex mind bars. So long as they're grey and r3 :D

That makes sense.
As the main blue of the alphas would be custom color, how about using deep blue like BBI or BFU?
I"m thinking WA as a main white of the modifiers, so the deep blue legends on them would seem darker.
I did some experiment to decide modifiers colors.

custom (same as alphas base)

GSZ (warm dark grey)

BO (lighter blue)

GD (cool light grey)

BFU (darker blue)

All renders are based on color code from https://deskthority.net/wiki/Signature_Plastics_ABS_colours.
Please note that these are just renders with 6500K light, and they may look different under different environment (and also depends on monitors).
At this moment, I think GD looks great with grey accents, whereas GSZ looks calm and BFU looks unique.

Here is a color scheme that I consider provisionally:
  • alphas-base custom
  • alphas-legend BFM
  • modifiers-base WA
  • grey accent-base GRY
  • grey accent-legend WA

I think the modifiers look exactly fine at this moment. Blue text will make it looks like another ordinary keyset.

I think it would be better to keep white legend on accent mods, since the blue color for keycaps is not as bright as white, which may make the accent vague.
But I'll try if I go blue legend and arrange the balance with grey accent if necessary :)) Thanks!

Do you mean F1~F12 with all grey would be better instead of just adding F5~F8?
(like this kit?)

Hi, just set the colors provisionally, and kit update. :-)

Here are the colors I've decided so far:

Since white and grey look very different under different environment,
I will order color samples to check with my eyes to compare ones that are chosen and others on the bench.

The kits are refined with advice and suggestion from this and other threads. Thank you all!

I’m down for a set. I really like SA set, but I hope that SP can properly produce the keycaps without weld lines. The past two SP sets I have purchased had some weld lines in them which is a little frustrating for the price they charge.
