[GB] GMK Hammerhead | July 6th - 31st
« on: Tue, 04 June 2019, 10:50:05 »

Introduction

Better were the days when mastery of seas came not from bargains struck with eldritch creatures, but from the sweat of a man's brow and the strength of his back alone. You all know this to be true. Gentlemen. Ladies.

-Captain Hector Barbossa

Hi everyone! Quick introduction. So I'm Chad and I'm the artisan behind KeyLabs Keycaps that I run with my pal Andrew. We're still a little new, and I spend a lot of time lurking, but I've had this keyset idea floating around my mind for a good while and really wanted to take a solid shot at the design. So I present to you, respectfully, the humble beginnings of GMK Hammerhead.

I want this set to evoke the feel of chilled, oceanic spray against your cheeks and the roll of deep blue-grey swells under a stormy sky. To spring forth the cry of gulls, heard over the ship's billowing sails, while your fellow sailors throw dice and spin tales of the great monsters of the deep and of loved ones from home. Surging white caps and cold, uncharted northern waters await. All of this splendor packed mysteriously into a GMK set.

Or something along those lines. I'm not a novelist.

Aluminum Caps

https://keylabs.gg/shop/crucible-hammerhead/

We decided to design and manufacturer our own aluminum keycaps to match Hammerhead. These are based on GMK R1 profile, with a flattened top face and resin infill in the shark tooth cutout. They actually feel amazing on your fingers, we're super happy with how they turned out! You can find them on our site here: https://keylabs.gg/shop/crucible-hammerhead/ The group buy for these will remain open until 7/31.

Artisan Caps
Sodie Caps

Sodie Caps is launching their Hammerhead collab on 7/16 @ 6PM EST. GLHF! https://www.sodiecaps.com/

Fraktal Kaps

Fraktal has put together some awesome artisans together for Hammerhead, featuring their Ankura and Aweigh! sculpts. Raffle takes place 7/10 @ 5PM EST: https://fraktalkaps.com/hammerhead

KeyLabs Keycaps

We will be raffling some of our own artisans to match the set in the coming weeks, stay tuned for those.

Hey, man! Love the colors of this set. Quick question for you, though:

You said this on the Hammerhead IC:

"Thanks for this point. The kit sets you see on the GB page are the final versions.

Nothing will be subtracted or changed from the kits on the site. They ship as advertised. If anything is added it will be for free and of no cost to the customer, on our dime, as a separate bonus item."

When you had said this, there were issues with the renders on your site. You had duplicate mod-colored tilde keys and duplicate mod-colored pipe keys, and I think lack of 7u spacebar. I see those have been corrected for this GB thread, as well as on the site.

You had earlier said this when someone asked about the duplicates:

"Ah nice catch. Unfortunately I had not seen that. One of those is supposed to be the darker blue color. I'll see what I can do with GMK, but requesting another quote an render may change costs and take some time."

So, can we assume that, both the price and the renders on the site right now are 100% true and what people will receive? I'm just a little confused, so trying to find some clarity. Thanks! <3

Yes, I'm sorry for the confusion here, it was a bit of a miscommunication from my end. I should have clarified and stated that nothing would be added to the kits that would raise the price unexpectedly on the customer end or things would be removed that would change the compatibility of the set ie. removing a shift key unexpectedly and losing layout support as a result.

At the time, due to the fact that GMK typically takes some time to re render and reprice kits at cost I did not think it would be logistically possible to correct a duplicate key without it taking time and changing pricing. Luckily, GMK took it in great stride and my rep was able to make the changes much quicker than anticipated. The end result is that there are no unnecessarily duplicated keys (corrected to mod color) in the kit at no extra cost. More specifically the R1 (~) and R2 (\|) keys have been color corrected so that the color layout is now correct swapping what would otherwise be mostly useless keys.

I do understand that this was a little confusing, but in the busyness of the launch, I spoke a little too soon.

TLDR: There were two keys R1 (~) and R2 (\|) that had been duplicated and this has been corrected and updated on all platforms with no change in cost or production timeline. There are 7U alpha color spacebars available in both kits, however I did have to make the tough call not to include the dark blue (533c) 7u spacebar as a costs measure. I was a little hasty with my original response and I do apologize for that.

Thank you for your question though, I do hope this helps.

For the navy 7U spacebar, if you really don't want to throw it in the base kit, can you please throw it in the spacebar kit (either add in as an extra, or replacing the 6U alpha colored spacebar in the spacebar kit)? I really think the 7U navy spacebar is the breakpoint for quite a few people, myself include. If you can just make that spacebar available anywhere without me having to purchase another base kit to get it, I'll buy definitely.

Still confused why zFrontier and CandyKey have a higher price on Deep water kit compared to Core kit.
Not here to moan since I'm gonna buy this beauty for sure. But just wanna understand the reason behind it  ;D

Hey thanks for the question! So the reason for that is that the Deep Water kit actually has a lower MOQ than the core. Initially the kit was just a set of alternative alphas, but there was so much support for that layout that it merited its own larger kit. However because it does have a lower MOQ, Deep Water is actually is more expensive per unit to produce until it sells 250 units (which is the MOQ of the Core). But, it can be produced with less orders. The margins on Deep Water are really slim, and since each vendor is dealing with differences in import costs, taxes etc, unfortunately on those two platforms Deep Water had to be just a little more to work.

Hopefully that helps!

Hey there, appreciate the question.

Since the core and Deepwater kits do still ship with standard 7u spacebars, adding additional accent 7u would be a rather significant change requiring new GMK renders of the kits involved and a change in pricing at this point in time. If The kits do so well that there is a chunk of margin to play with towards the end of the sale there may be a possibility to poll for a few bonus keys as thanks for the great support, and it may be a consideration at that point in time, but I don't want to get ahead of myself only being on the second day of GB launch.

That being said, my offer still stands where if you would like a Dark blue, accent color, 7u (533c) spacebar at the end of the GB I would happily part with my unused one from my personal Deep Water kit :)

Yeah so when I initially started this IC in the fall, there were just so many GMK sets popping up seemingly every other week. I had wanted Hammerhead to stand out on some elements that were a little more non-traditional. Over the course of the IC however, less common things like the alternative WASD were removed with feedback in consideration of the kit price. The dark blue accent mods in my opinion gave Hammerhead a lot of its feel, and having all of those removed or replaced leaving just a two keycap colored kit seemed to lose most of its aesthetic. The enter key is one of the few remaining elements that I still wanted to express in the design of the kit as its creator without raising costs by including too many duplicated keys. Hope this helps :)

It does, yeah, thanks! I'm a little bummed about it, because I don't personally like forcing accents and I would have bought the set otherwise, had it been included, but I respect your vision as a designer and wish you the best on this and future sets!

The share a common taste, but the alpha keys are a darker blue than calm depths and the text, aquamarine rather than the more like sky blue of calm depths.

Thanks for the question!

I feel you.. there’s no benefit of a price break and lately shipping from zfrontier had been delayed quite substantially.

And ZFrontier likes to ship their orders in boxes with pictures of freaking bombs on them. Which means Customs goes haywire every time. Yay!

The enter key is one of the few remaining elements that I still wanted to express in the design of the kit as its creator without raising costs by including too many duplicated keys.

It looks nice on the Core kit, but it means that the Deep Water kit has an alpha-colored Enter key unless you use the 3258 accent Enter.

We will be updating numbers too on the GB page of ours, now its just on hold still to confirm a few things. We heard a few things about the pricing, turns out Deep W Base Kit was a hit. The price is simply higher :/ We do apologise.

The best decision IMO, this was a bit of a headscratcher and it was frustrating as a spectator to see that all comments about it were ignored. Feel free to reach out if you want some asistance with the kits!

I can absolutely understand that. I have not being trying to do so, I love hammerhead and want to offer the best version of it to everyone, I was just blinded by a preset groupbuy date and, admittedly, did a poor job grasping the scale of feedback, I'm going to work towards learning and not making missteps like it moving forward.

I'm going to take some time to rethink things and I really appreciate your offer! May just take you up on that.

I personally prefer the core kit, however had not joined the GB due to the issues previously raised. Once those are fixed (and providing ISO UK stays in), I will almost definitely be joining for the core colourway.

I use ortho boards, so it was already perfect for my needs. Hopefully it doesn't take long to fix the issues and relaunch this.

While unfortunate, I am really happy with this decision, especially considering that this is such a nice colorway. As Oblotzky put it in a different thread, "A delayed set is eventually good, but a rushed set is forever bad."

We all appreciate the work you've put into this and I'm sure that after some polish it'll have an even stronger launch next time. Looking forward to the changes -- thanks!  :thumb:

That's actually a Miyamoto quote he's rephrasing: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad"

It's a good quote about development in general. Oblotsky and Keylabs Chad are wise to adhere to it.

Okay.  So, to move forward, where do you want to collect input and iterate through different versions of the kits?  Did you want to unlock the old IC thread, or are you starting a new IC thread?  That discussion probably doesn't belong in the group buy forum.

Taking the group buy down must have been very difficult but I feel it was the best decision in the end.

I was looking forward to joining this group buy but I ultimately held back due to some issues with the kits.

I was planning to purchase the Deep Water base kit and the spacebar kit. Doing so, I expected I'll be able to get spacebars in the 3 offered colors in both 6.25u and 7u sizes. But in reality I would be missing spacebars but also had a few 6u/off-center spacebars which I do not need.

This is still a very awesome keycap set and I hope to purchase with more confidence when you ultimately bring this back to market.

Keep up the great work!!  ;D ;D :thumb:

OP had to cancel the GB due to the difficult kit design, with the base kit having too many keys as one of the problems. Yeah, let's throw some media keys in it.

They could be in the novelties kit or something.  Or the main kit could be pared down and a “modding” kit could be added with things like the variants of the extra keys block, and variant colors of things like the arrow keys.  The kit is being reworked, so now is another chance for things like that to be considered.

ive commented so many times, that I think most of the people would prefer the alternate alphas / now known as deep water kit and you should also make a EURO Kit for it :) But well I never got an answer to my questions and suggestions on the IC. I also didnt join because there was so much confusion especially right before the GB start and even after that. I really like this set and still would buy, if things are clarified beforehand. Keep your head up, everyone has to start somewhere. I bet your next GB will be successful.

Hey there, I appreciate the kind words. I do plan on having euro support for Deep Water. I can understand there was confusion prior to launch. With clear kit design and open communication I'm hoping the relaunch will be much less confusing.

Check the pantone for the references. Color matching will start now with GMK, but we wont get physical samples until after the GB starts.

Off to a solid start on NovelKeys already! Dark base is nearly at 100 and light is at 50. Seems like MOQ may get hit within the first couple days.

Day 1 numbers are looking great! We are missing a couple numbers from proxies, but it is a solid start.

Light - 131
Dark - 260 (MOQ Hit!)
Novelties - 189
Extras - 114
Euro - 12

No extras included. Should be an easy MOQ hit with this set for all kits - maybe except Euro.

Any idea when the artisan keycap will be available? Looks soooo good! :)

hello. do you anticipate that the artisans becomes available during the main set GB? i'd like to purchase it all together to avoid having to pay shipping twice.

thanks

Hoping within the next 7 days, likely a bit sooner. However the group buy for this will only be happening on our site, so unfortunately there is not an option to bundle shipping. Silver lining here is that since they are the same packages as our normal individual keycaps, shipping is low cost. Plus this way, they will likely come sooner than the keyset itself ;)

The reason for this is because these metal keycaps are a totally new venture for us - we want to focus on making them the best quality we can. If things turn out well you can expect us to work with proxies in the future once we have the logistics sorted out!

Day 1 numbers are looking great! We are missing a couple numbers from proxies, but it is a solid start.

Light - 131
Dark - 260 (MOQ Hit!)
Novelties - 189
Extras - 114
Euro - 12

No extras included. Should be an easy MOQ hit with this set for all kits - maybe except Euro.

thank for providing renders with neutral color dark and light backgrounds. i HATE it i see renders with crazy colored backgrounds as it's hard to see what the item actually looks like. goes for both, caps and keebs.

will definitely grab a light set towards the end of the month, i still haven't made my mind up about the novelties.
Keebs::: Bok.CP - Antique Copper | Keycult No.2/65 Black/Brass | Keycult No.2 Rev 1 Grey/Brass | Jane V2 CE - Black/Multicolor | J-01 Rev1 - Blue | Haus - Silver | Kohaku - Red | OwLab Jelly Epoch - Ruby SE & Popcorn | KBD8X MKII WKL - Black PC | Ayleen WKL - Gin
Caps::: GMK Modo, GMK Jamon, GMK Olive, GMK Mizu, GMK Olivia++, GMK Bingsu, GMK Analog Dreams, GMK Botanical, GMK Moondust, GMK Taro R2, GMK Hennessey, GMK Serika R2, GMK Birch, GMK Tuzi, GMK Red Alert, GMK Zooted, GMK Hazakura, GMK Cyrillic Beige, GMK Lavender, GMK Daifuku, GMK November Fog, GMK Villanelle, GMK Blossom, DCS 9009 WYSE Alps

On order: GMK Tiramisu, GMK Maroon, GMK Bordeaux, GMK Taiga

I was dead set on getting the dark set but now that the deadline is approaching I am really starting to like the light set. Can't decide what to pull the trigger on now and unfortunately I really shouldn't spend the money on both.

Edit: What color are the legends on the light kit alphas? The renders look black, is that correct or is it actually dark blue? I'm thinking if they are black I could just get the dark kit and if I ever decide I want the look of the light kit I could just throw on alphas from Bow or Minimal

The legends are the same color as the dark set's alpha key colors. 533C

The problem is that the GMK is the only good keycap manufacture of cherry profile keycaps (JTK is good too but their lead time is almost the same)

Thanks Mike for the update. So we are officially at the time were GMK turnarounds are at a year and a half, what a nonsense.

That's for me and GMK sets for the foreseeable future, can't be bothered with these delays time and time again

I don't really get what all the hoopla is about when it comes to GMK. The quality does not seem all that better then the cheaper companies. The Akko and taihao caps i have don't seem much worst, at all..
And GMK's renowned legend sharpness looks pretty... meh, to me.

Delayed again, till September... GMK timelines are surely looking ridiculous, 14-16 months.
unpopular opinion: not worth waiting more than a year for.

The problem is that the GMK is the only good keycap manufacture of cherry profile keycaps (JTK is good too but their lead time is almost the same)
I don't really get what all the hoopla is about when it comes to GMK. The quality does not seem all that better then the cheaper companies. The Akko and taihao caps i have don't seem much worst, at all..
And GMK's renowned legend sharpness looks pretty... meh, to me.

I'd be interested to see a step by step behind the scenes of how GMK produce keycaps. Yea we've read what the steps are but I'd like to see video of it... Just so I can better understand how producing keyboard keycaps can take a year and a half. I'd also like to know at what point did the consumer of these keycaps become okay with such long waiting periods. It's truly absurd. If they extended the waittimes to 3 years or something, you'd still have idiots saying it's worth the wait.

We received an update on timeline here. Resin shortages have caused massive delays on all keycap sets. Currently this is scheduled to complete production October, 2021. Customers should receive the sets in November.

I mean I think they made it pretty clear

Obviously producing keycaps doesn't take a year and a half.  However, there's a production queue, and sets in front of Hammerhead have been delayed by both COVID and the issues with resin shortages.

In general, when people are ordering keycaps faster than GMK can make them, lead times will increase.  Say what you like about their intelligence, but plenty of people are obviously still willing to buy GMK keycaps with an 18 month wait otherwise GBs would be failing all over the place.

There is a slight delay - production is complete. However they are waiting for the banderole to arrive and that has been delayed. We are looking at shipping out from GMK within 2 weeks.

Thank you for the constant updates, you're the man!!! On a disappointing note, they had more than a year to prep for the packaging. Even then, still decides to screw it up. Shortage of paper perhaps?  :thumb:

Candykeys. Denmark, EU. Not uncommon for the European proxy to be the first shipping out considering GMK is located in Germany.

Received mine today. I find the colors a bit disappointing, the alphas & modifiers are a lot closer to each other than what the render depicted. The modifiers are dark blue rather than the grayish tone. The photo is next to a window with light from overcast sky.

The kits were good, reasonable pricing on the NorDe kit! Should have grabbed that cyan space bar though...

The alphas look a lot less dark than render too. Reminds me of GMK Laser R2, where the synthwave set was essentially purple instead of the more "GMK Metropolis" vibe from the renders

I am still waiting for mine but just saying the pictures( lens quality, lighting etc etc) can be quite wild and not really a correct representation.
There are too many factors that are going on here.

I also hope it’s a lighting thing. The cyan looks too blue and there’s very little contrast between the mods and alphas.

Ahh yes, the tried and true "lets all freak out at the first pictures someone sends of the set" Geekhack trope.

It's just one picture taken in a specific lighting situation. Better to go back a little bit and look at the approved color samples than this picture alone, or wait for more pictures to really start to worry.

I received mine yesterday and just unpacked it to check and i'd say you are right! The modifiers are pretty far off the grayish tone on the renders. Your picture compared to what i have on hand looks a bit oversaturated but if you compare alphas & mods it gives a pretty accurate view on how they compare to each other.

Edit: I just looked at the Pantone Colour Chips that have been posted at the end of the OP, it's pretty accurate to what i received. Renders are a bit misleading tho they are just renders. IMO it looks quite nice but a lighter tone for the mods would have made it pop more.

True, they do indeed look quite close to those Pantone color examples. I didn't pay much attention to them earlier, just looked at the renders. And the renders seem to have a lot more contrast between the alphas & mods, which I feel would have looked better.

Not saying it's bad either, but agree with the missing "pop factor" Especially in slightly lower light it just looks like a quite uniformly dark set.

Set arrived today - thought I was going to be really let down after looking at some of the pictures on here but I'm not. They look great even though they are different to the renders.

The colours are slightly darker than the renders but are spot on with the colour samples. I'm a lot happier with this set than the solarised dark set i got a while back...

Also kind of wish I had gone for a set of the novelties now though.

Anyone recieve the light alpha set?

I don't think any of the sets have made it to the US vendors yet.  I too haven't received any shipping updates or anything but I'm not concerned because there's usually a bit of a delay from everyone in Europe getting them.

4-6 weeks delay from the first EU pics on geekhack is about normal. They don’t have to travel far from GMK in Germany; our ports in the USA are a nightmare. Maybe before thanksgiving, maybe after.

Worst come to worst, You could sand it out, and then just polish that side until you get to a finish that resembles the the rest of the keycap.
Or, if there's someone here who has this set, and is on;y using their 7y space bar, maybe they could hook you up with their unneeded 6.25. (This might be me, not sure which keeb i'm putting set on yet though)

Considering getting a base set from extras and from what I've seen in this stream colors look pretty nice.

Maybe the slight difference in modifiers' color is more noticeable with the dark base?
