Hey everyone! Over the past couple of months, I've been working on a fun, lighthearted set, and it's finally time to see what others think about it.

I'd like to present GMK Sloth!

IC Form

The inspiration comes from the animal that everyone knows and loves, the sloth. Sloths are known for their slowness due to their low metabolism and deliberate slow movements to compensate for it. The color of their fur is either brown, tan, white, or gray depending on their species, and at times, their coat can sometimes host a symbiotic green algae to camouflage them in the trees. They primarily eat leaves and climb up branches to stay off the ground to avoid predators. Kristen Bell also loves them.

Lazy AF
The "Lazy AF" kit is for those who have a common 60%, 65%, 75%, TKL, and 1800 layout. It also includes the F13 key for those who need it.

Baby Sloth
The "Baby Sloth" kit (40s) is for those who like smaller or more niche layouts.

Branches
The "Branches" kit includes 6u spacebars and accent spacebars.

Slovelties
I think this one is self explanatory.

All colours are custom? Even the "white"? Is that really necessary? Could using a stock colour lower the price? Am I asking too many questions?

That said, I like the theme, the muted colours are interesting. Well done.

I guess it's not necessary but if 2 out of the 3 are custom, does adding one more make a difference? I'm not sure how it would affect the price if MOQ needs to be 250 anyways. I guess we shall see. We can adjust the white if necessary.

Thanks for the feedback!

From what I've heard, the price isn't affected by custom vs stock colours, only how many different colours there are. The main difference between stock colours and custom colours is that the MOQ for a set with only stock colours is 150, whereas the MOQ for a set with custom colours is 250. (minimum, vendors can choose to quote at 500 to reduce the price)

Was hoping for green accents when I saw inspiration picture, but there are none. Would prefer them over brown ones.

Can confirm, custom colors just raises the MOQ not the price. If you've got a single custom color there's no impact from more other than number of different colors total.

I like the colorway, I like the theme, I like that numpad is in the base kit. Be prepared for the "Atlantis ISO" guy to show up about how your ISO support is wrong for both US and UK ISO.

I wonder if this set would be ostensibly improved if it used the mod color and the accent color as alternating mods (like Carbon did with the black and orange). Q&D mock up:

Do you mean the top left R1 esc key novelty? I tried doing a brown sloth, white background enter and while it did look good by itself, it didn't work with the set since all the other mods is brown or gray.

YUUS! Sloth is one of my faves!!!
I 100% back this set. So I filled out the IC form.

I have never designed a keycap set... So not sure what my suggestion is worth here. lol

But I read a comment about green accents. That would be cool. But I was thinking maybe some green legends. Like even just maybe on the mods? I personally am not the biggest fan of the color green. But I do like a more pastel green. Just think maybe it would look cool with a more pastel green. With green legends on the mods and accents.

But either way. I dig it! And im in 100% till the end. Will purchase.

Thanks! Green accents actually will make the set sort of look like Ursa. I actually chose a greener gray mod color in order to simulate the green algae that will sometimes stick onto the coat of a sloth. The set is meant to be a little muted so that the novelties will shine.

Thanks, I don't think the colors will change much now but I can understand that two sets with nature themes might look similar.

Please consider adding some r2 and r3 novelties. There are lots of great grey or greyish sets that these could pair well with.

As cool as sloths are, I do feel like this should have been a novelties kit for GMK Ursa. That being said, you've told me before that you thought Ashes looked like an early concept of Burnt Orange "but if you just turn the colors off on that, shrug" I still feel like that was an insult to my set as it had nothing to do with your set. Rudy looks nothing like Forge, please stop doing that.

I think that was a tongue in cheek because forge with alternate alphas was called a clone of Rudy.

Walker has previously referred to Forge as a Rudy clone, and was especially aggravated when alternate alphas were added. DB was simply flipping that on its head. If anything, you've backed up DB here.

Thanks for the interest! It'll definitely be a while before this hits GB. We currently have a slot with a vendor but since there's been so many GMK sets, the slot is still a good ways away. Rest assured, slowly but surely this will happen. :)

I'll be "hanging around" for this  :))

haha! hang tight! Sorry it'll be a long wait but currently the larger US vendors just have a huge queue when it comes to GMK  :(

The slovelties are extremely cute, and have a great name too haha. I'm interested!

Thanks! Be sure to watch this thread. We'll come out with more stuff as it gets closer to GB. Be sure to let other people know too :)
Do you have a signature we can put up to show some support in the forums too? That could help spread it around a bit too.  :thumb:

Thanks! But as a note, I had to use a different imgur extension to get your link to work. it ended in /8igU0pR.jpg instead of the one that you posted. (Took it from your signature)

No big updates at the moment. We're still quite a while away from the GB slot. I might go back and work the colors just a little.

This is a pretty interesting set for sure! Can't say I'm in love with the theming, but I do really like the base colorway. I could see myself picking up a base set when this goes live! Also if you do go back & rework the colors at all I would suggest maybe going with a slightly darker, less brownish gray for the mods & alpha legends. I think it would look great with that adjustment personally, although it would take it away from the theming. Anyways GL with this project!

I'll make that request and see if my guy has time to do a render for that, thanks :)

When looking at the mod color in the RAL book, it's actually quite dark. The brownish gray is sort of intended due to the theme. I tried changing it to a little greenish but the slight hint of brown looked better. TBH, the brown is more noticeable in the renders compared to the actual RAL book. I'll take some pictures later to show what it looks like.

Hey everyone! I'm looking at the kits again for sloth and based on the feedback in the IC form, I'm considering cutting the 40s kit. I've added split spacebars to the spacebars kit and added the extra B to the base kit. Please let me know what you guys think! If you're a 40% user, please voice your opinions so I can know if there's enough demand for it. Thanks!

Base kit mostly looks good, but I'd replace the R3 #~, R4 \| ISO keys (partial and inconsistent ISO-UK coverage) with R3 \|, R4 <>, which are better for neutral ISO support (and also cover ISO-US fully). I also suggest changing the stepped Caps↲Lock legend to just Caps, since otherwise it's the only two-line legend in the set.

I would move the extra B to the spacebars kit. The reason being that most people who want to outfit their ergo board with proper keys/legends are probably going to end up buying the spacebars kit anyway. So, to me at least, the extra B and 2u/2.25u/2.75u spacebars kind of naturally go together.

Speaking of the spacebars kit, feel free to remove the 1.75u space since only about three 40% designs out there use it in total (and one of them actually requires two 1.75u's, so a single key doesn't do much).

Thanks for the feedback! I'll take out the 1.75u space. Since the Alice layout is getting more and more popular, is there are reason not to include the extra B key?

You're welcome. Since it's just one key, it's your call. But since you'll be removing a key from the spacebars kit, effectively freeing up a spot, and also because of the reasons I gave above, I think it makes more sense to move the extra B to the spacebars kit.

I edited my post with a suggestion for the stepped Caps Lock legend in the meantime; check that out as well.

Came here to say this.

English (US), terminal style, seems to be the best all-around choice.

I have no issue changing the ISO. It doesn't really affect me so I'll make this last change to it to include terminal style.

If you'ree going to cut 40's, at least consider adding ortho support in base (4 keys) or adding ortho/staggered 40's support (6 keys).

Is it possible to include ortho support without using the Read/data/out/etc keys? If so, let me know and I can add those.

The smiling sloth from the deskmat is already one of the novelties. There might be too many if it's an enter rama key as well. Personally I haven't talked to that many people who like those rama enter key so I don't really have plans to include one.

I like the walking sloth more, yes the smiling sloth would be too many if use in rama key. The long(?) arms are also essential to me so if the rama key could be longer then that would be perfect. Btw would it be strange to use brown key with grey infill for the rama?

I tried that and it does look a little strange. There's not quite enough contrast between the brown and the mod gray.

Few updates after taking in all the feedback recently -
  • ISO - I'll stick to ANSI PC ISO. I'd like to reduce as much costs so that people can purchase base + novelties without paying too much
  • Novelties - I've added some new novelties since this is a large part of the set. New faces and some novelty arrows in the accent color
  • Renders - I've requested renders of the updated kits. These will be final unless there's an essential key that was missed
  • RAMA artisan - I've decided to do that brown cap with cream sloth. A mockup has been made and it looks great!
  • CAN Vendor - not sure about this one. I'm going to ask other vendors for advice
  • 40s - 40s kit will be included. It's roughly ~25% of the IC and I think it might be popular enough to meet MOQ with some extras. I've included the accent split bars there and put alpha split bars in the spacebars kit and moved the 'B' over

Are you saying there should be two spacebar kits? One alpha colored and one accent colored? I'm afraid it might be tougher to hit MOQ for both of them if I were to split them.

Looking at past sets, big portion of them had both colours of the bars in the 40s kit or in the spacebar kit. For example, people who want accent spacebars for Alice-like boards have to buy both kits anyway.
With 40s kit sales being around 10% of the base most of the time, I would say that it's save to assume, that it would hit moq with both colours included.

As for the separate accent spacebar kit, I guess Naut 2's spacebar kits has been stuck in mind for a while, sorry.

No alpha-coloured spacebars in the 40s kit? I would personally rather have a separate accent spacebar kit.

Are you saying there should be two spacebar kits? One alpha colored and one accent colored? I'm afraid it might be tougher to hit MOQ for both of them if I were to split them.

I guess the best way to just remove accented split spacebars all together. I don't think I can kit similar to Naut 2 since it's a much more established set.

Thanks! Once we get closer, i'll announce other artisan maker collabs we have in line! Those will most likely be available through raffle. We'll probably just stick to one RAMA though. :)

congrats on this set.. really beautiful..

from a design standpoint, I'd personally love to see the font color on the alphas being black (or at least darker than they are now..)
it gives the set a bit more "pop" and looks a bit less washed out..

otherwise really love it and am def. in for base+novelties

Thank you for the feedback! I think changing the font color to black would break the muted feel that I'm going for. There are sets that have done that and it really destroyed the set in my eyes.

It's all subjective :)
Personally I don't think it would disturb the beautiful muted feel that you've got going on the keycap colours and the accents..

Take a look at RAL 000 25 00 for the alpha font color... It's much softer than a black and should keep your color balance and soft tones..

Anyway, that's my last comment on the subject.. great set! start the GB now :)

Man I'm so tired of GMK kitting. As an ortho user I have to pay more for less keys in the end.
I really love this set, just wish it could've run in KAT or somewhere where I didn't have to buy 150 keys to only use 47 of them.
I don't mean to disrespect the designer, the compatability of this set is amazing and very well thought out.

People should stop acting like KAT is the end-all, be-all solution and GMK killer. Keep in mind that no custom KAT set has shipped yet, and we don't yet know for sure how good their reverse dye sub is. I own KAM Starry Night, and the reverse dye sub on the few black novelty keys is great, but making a full reverse dye subbed set is a whole 'nother ball game. We don't know what the failure rate on those novelty kits was. Maybe only 10% of them passed QC, who knows (they made tons of extras for that GB). Now imagine scaling that to a full set.

Also, not to mention that I've personally had issues with stems cracking on my KAT Alpha set. In my experience, MX Clears destroy KAT stems, and anything wider probably does too.

Don't get me wrong, I love the profile and I love how my KAT and KAM sets look and feel, but that doesn't change the fact that KAT is not yet a proven solution for custom sets. GMK is a tried and true solution with tens if not hundreds of thousands of sets in circulation and close to zero problems. It's no wonder that it's the go-to choice for a lot of designers.

Please don't think this is anything personal against you, I just felt like addressing the overall sentiment that I feel is currently present in the community regarding KAT.

Thanks for the feedback and enthusiasm for the set! I totally feel you when I'm looking to outfit my alice layout board but need to pay extra to purchase an addon just for the spacebars and extra alpha key.

One thing I will say though is that paying more for less keys doesn't really communicate the whole picture of why that happens. In this community, ortho, ISO, 40s, ergo, and sometimes even numpad users are considered niche layouts. In most industries, niche products in that particular industry will generally cost more than the mainstream products. We see this in food where you have regular food vs Organic food. We see this in computers where extremely small computers ITX or extremely large computers E-ATX will generally cost you more when you have the same functionality as the more mainstream ATX layout.

Even our hobby as a whole, we are paying way more for a niche product compared to a mainstream mechanical keyboard or rubber dome keyboard. So while I understand your pain, I think that until a niche layout becomes mainstream, it will generally cost more to support it. (KAT is sort of an exception but the costs of it is masked by the production of other layouts by how KAT determines MOQ. Also the fact that KAT is dye-sub means there are no molds required so a lot of the unique keys aren't viewed as any more unique than a normal alpha key.)

Yes, I understand the both of you. Especially the quality part, Konstantin. I hadn't thought that trough. Better compatability is worthless if the quality lacks.

Anyway, it might be time for me to grow up and invest in this.
Thank you both for your replies.

Please, a render on any E-White 65% board (Koyu, Think6.5, etc.) please  ;D Just bought the Milk M65-B and i need something to go with it... this might be it.

I'll make that request and see if my guy has time to do a render for that, thanks :)

Thank you for sharing a picture of the RAL color cards in the OP.  Could you please share the RAL codes?  Thanks!

Any chance for 1.25u space in the spacebars kit? Maybe instead of the second 1u (not sure how useful 2× 1u is outside of 40s).

was thinking a KBD fans burgandy 60% case but I'm afraid that would clash with the Rama.
