Want to help make a Volume of Tactile Zine? Like taking pictures? Remember when dates in the bottom of pictures was a thing? Everyone is invited to help out if you’re interested! Read on below for more info!

As I’ve said before, I’m going to be away from geekhack for about a month; maybe a little more. I’ve been working on a zine called Tactile for much of 2015 and my work on that will have to go on hiatus while I’m away. Some of the readership has suggested that it would be fun to have a project or something to keep the momentum going while I’m gone. So I’m here to drop another ridiculous idea. This didn't happen while I was gone but I'd like to move forward with it and organize it.

I’m going to crowdsource a Volume of the zine which will be based on pictures. But not just any pictures. I want the photos to be from disposable cameras. The ones you bought when you were like fourteen and they had like twenty something shots. In the corner there was a little date code? You’d hope you took some decent flicks and couldn’t find out until you developed and printed them. When I go home, my mom breaks out the physical picture books and we’ll look at little Captain Badass when he was a tot. It’s really fun and enjoyable.

Think this is like circa ’98. It was kinda grainy and it’s a picture of a picture. Glorious

Anyways I’ve got jdcarpe, BlueNalgene, and HoffmanMyster signed up for the initial people to start the project. I’ll be mailing them some Fuijifilm Quicksnap cameras. It is then up to anyone who is interested, hopefully some of the readership from Tactile will join but it’s open to everyone, to take pictures for this Volume. The pictures need to have a tangential relationship to keyboards and keyboard accessories. But I’m not going to dictate what I’m looking for. I want the people involved in the project to figure out all the details and what they wanna do. If you want to take 27 pictures of Clacks and a Korean custom? Cool. If you want to take 9 shots of 3 diff boards then mail it to a friend or someone who signs up and is interested? Cool. If you want to go to Walmart and take pictures of their keyboards behind the register? Cool. This is up to anyone who wants to be involved. If there’s no organization, I’ll just make a collage of any good pictures and throw some words together. But I’m hoping someone comes up with really sick sub-projects. Think of me as like the curator of Post Secret or Humans of New York. I’d like to just be here to facilitate this.

Weapon of choice for this encounter

When I return, I’ll figure out shipping and how to develop the pictures. I’ll put the zine together as the project members have instructed me to do. I’ll probably add a few words. Then I’ll make the zine. The project participants will get a special edition and copies of the printed pictures. The regular edition will be sold as a pay-what-you-want Volume. Profits will go to geekhack and help fund future Tactile zine projects.

Please note that if you sign up, you’re OK with me using your creative endeavors and ideas to make money. Yes they are going to geekhack and the Tactile zine. I have mechanisms in place to ensure I do not spend the money from this Volume on stuff for me...like a KMAC or something.

So to summarize:
  • This project is to crowdsource and involved people in making a new Volume of Tactile Zine.
  • I’ll mail out disposable cameras.
  • This thread is to organize the project. I'll be leading the organization and stuff. I'm going to try and let the readership and people who are interested take the lead though.
  • When I get all the pictures, I’ll make a photo zine and sell it

If there’s any questions, concerns, comments, or anything else, please let me know in this thread or by any other means of contact you have with me. I’m really hoping this takes off and I’m excited to see how things unfold.

If you are interested in helping and joining, please post in this thread! I'll be overseeing everything now.

Things to consider:

Leader: Me

Theme: What's your favorite keyboard mod? What does modding mean to you? Is it swapping keycaps? Or maybe swapping a controller into a vintage board? Take a picture of it/them.

Title?

Artwork?

Sticker design(s)?

Should there be a theme? Sub-projects? More kit-kat pictures? A story? Photojournalism style article?

Should 6 people take 27 pictures each or should the cameras get passed around and get lots of people involved?

Does someone want to write words? Captions or a column? Intro?

If the cameras get passed around, how should the pictures be tracked?

Other ideas?

I'm down to write some words, if there's a spot for that. Just need someone to give me a topic, and an approximate wordcount.

Totally down to contribute, been loving Tactile. Writing a short piece and/or snapping a few pics (but not a whole camera's worth, I like the idea of many people getting their hands on the cameras).

Would be neat to do a crowdsourced interview (like an "ask me anything" type deal), though I'm not sure who to interview (a group of people?).

Just to reiterate this, I'm going to be pretty hands off with this one. If you have an idea and want to contribute, step up and start working on it. I'm hoping someone(s) steps up as a leader. Starting next week I won't be around to organize anything. Thanks for all the interest so far :).

This didn't work out in the exact way that I wanted it to but I would still very much like to do a photography based Volume for Tactile. In the coming days, I'm going to see where the cameras are and take them back. And then I'll be reorganizing this project. If you're still interested in helping to take pictures or write some words, please keep an eye out and I'll be back with some info soon!

Can we still make it happen with the original camera people?  :|  Now that you're back and could lend some direction, it could work out much better.  I made the mistake of agreeing to lead the project when I was out of the state, which was dumb.

Ok so I think I've come up with some fun themes:

1) Day in the life of a board: Take a picture and give me a snapchat or Instagram like caption describing a part of your keyboard's day

2) Your favorite mod: What's your favorite mod on your board? Did you swap in LEDs? Add a new cable? Tell us about it.

3) Favorite keyboard in 5 words or less: Take a picture and send a description in 5 words or less

Once we or I decide on a theme, I'll locate the last camera and put some more structure around this.

I don't really have a timeline no. You're welcome to buy a camera of your own and send me the prints. I can help reimburse your costs too. Before May would be ideal for me.

Update: I’ve decided I’d like the theme of the pictures to be “What’s your favorite keyboard mod?” And then I’d like a picture of that and maybe a few words. If you like swapping keycaps is a mod, lemme see it. If you have a controller that you swapped in, let’s see that. Paint the plate? Sick.

I’ll be PMing people who commented on this earlier to see if they’re still interested. If you’d like to get involved and take some picture, speak up. I’ve got tons of cameras in CONUS and I can reimburse you for buying a camera if you’re overseas.

My goal is that I will receive prints and develop the cameras I have. If I get people to write, I’ll include that as well as a short forward. I’m thinking I will get these made at a print shop and perhaps sell these for a nominal or “pay-what-you-like” cost. If you’re taking pictures or are involved, you’ll get a copy for free. I’m thinking any contributors might also get a special sticker or add in too. All profits will go towards doing other things with the zine such as buying a color printer for my house or funding some of my other ideas for the zine. And of course, paying for the shipping and supplies for the main Volumes. I’m considering getting Stamps.com.

So consider this a reboot of this project and I’ll be supporting it better now that work isn’t as crazy. Questions? Comments? Lemme hear them.

Oh and currently there's a few cameras floating around. Hoff, BlueNalgene, and jdcarpe have 2 each. And I believe that infiniti is shooting with one in PH and jokrik is passing one around ID.

Negative, BlueNalgene does not have a camera.  I mailed it to Engi today.  I sent both the used one and the unused one to him.

I haven't received the camera yet.  I can always play with my DSLR to make it more crappy P&S disposable film camera, but I haven't  messed around with that yet.

Can I get in on this?

I have a disposable in shrink at my desk and my wife volunteers at a darkroom so I can send scans if that is acceptable.

Would be fun to document some open board surgery I am about to embark on!

Absolutely. Sounds like a good time. Scans are perfectly fine. Just link em here or upload them to flickr (or your favorite image hosting site) and share that link.

Nope. I think you're in Canada though right? Instead of me sending you a camera, I can reimburse you for one that you find on Amazon or wherever. Lemme know.

I don't really have one in mind so let's make one up and say end of April. I kinda want the film in hand by May and at least a rough draft done in June.

I'm a bit short on cash right now but I think there's a disposable camera somewhere at my parents house. Or if you got some leftover cameras you can add one to the zines you're sending me and I'll mail back the film. Or upload the pictures and send them to you. Anyway, I'm willing to take part in this. Already have some ideas about the theme!

I don't have any cameras to spare on hand. What I can do is reimburse you for a camera that you buy locally if that helps you. And then you can scan the film or mail it back to me.

How's everyone's photoshoots going? I took my camera to be developed a couple weeks ago but Walgreen's is being weird. Something about not having enough envelopes means they haven't made my prints yet.

Thanks for reminding me... Good thing I'm still in the middle of the painting process. Should be finished by the end of this week.

Any updates to those who participated? I haven't heard anything in the last month.....which is especially frustrating since the camera I dropped off at my developer's seems to be lost.

Lost?   :(

On my end I'm still looking for a disposable film camera.  Alternately I'm looking for that POS film camera I saw when I cleaned the attic that one time.

The last time I went they told me after 2 weeks of holding onto the camera that they didn't have envelopes to develop the film. Now after a month, I still haven't heard anything. Don't think I'll be using Walgreens anymore lol. Luckily there's another place in town that'll take disposable cameras I think. I need to get another camera or have someone who has 2 to send me one though now.

Holy **** I forgot how much fun film and disposable cameras are. Got my pictures back today. Walgreen's even scans the pictures onto a CD for you.

These flicks are from when R1N3 visted me and we built his Orion V2. They're wonderfully grainy and ****ed up in the best way. Such lomography.

Sounds good. Part of the reason I was so upset I left my backpack at the cabin during the meetup is that I was going to pass one of these cameras around to take pics of the meetup. That obviously didn't happen :(.

I think I've maxed out the time limit and participation on this. I'm going to shoot the rest of jokrik's camera (he only shot like 10 of 27), get the prints developed, scanned, and starting to layout the photozine. I may have also found a printing service for this project. This isn't dead, just going slowly.

I actually have two disposable cameras just sitting on my desk. Wasn't sure what to do with them as one has 26 shots and the other is jokrik's half shot one. It's 800 iso so I wasn't sure what I'd do with it. Since that post I haven't really done much with the project because I'm dealing with a lot of IRL stuff. So I'd be happy to get more contributors. If I send them to you, can you pass them around and finish up the shots?

Yeah man for sure! I still have a few more projects laying around here to photograph and I'll have some fun playing with film again - i'll have to go find my light meter lol  Nah i think half the fun of those disposables is the mistakes and poor quality. 800 should be perfect for most lit indoor shots but i dont remember what the lens fstop is on those probably something silly like 1.4.

Anyway, send em over.. i'll call up LSB and see if we can get a group together to give you some shots from here in Raleigh  :thumb:
