[IC] Salvun's Timascus keycap (R1)
« on: Sun, 10 November 2019, 09:50:51 »
Salvun made a rather special, first of its kind, keycap in Titanium Damascus also known as Timascus.
It is a patented metal material consisting of two or more titanium alloys, Timascus is corrosion resistant, non-magnetic, and lightweight.

Some more information about Timascus can be found on the following link below:
https://www.knifeart.com/timascus.html

Pricing

The price for one of these will most likely be 200 USD for a single keycap.
We understand that this is a rather steep price for a single keycap but understand the material itself is expensive as is the tooling needed to machine these.
Besides the material cost the keycap also requires manual polishing to achieve the end result.

Availability

We will make only a small number of these keycaps focussing on quality rather than quantity.
Because of the price, we have no idea how many actually are willing to pay for a keycap like this so I have setup a small google form to get some idea about the demand for this.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfBxXxdUcMdScicv8OjmOiUdvHRmALf_YL6L9HhaG9Ts88WTQ/viewform

Please fill in the form to let us know if you are interested in buying one of these or not.
Most likely these keycaps will only be sold through a raffle.

I really love the premise behind this piece. I’ve always loved the Damascus process and look on weapons and other smithed pieces.

That being said, the price alone may make it difficult to ship. Good luck with this IC! I really hope people are into it!

Artisan key caps aren't my thing, so take this as an outsider's perspective.

I think it's gorgeous and a great concept. Considering that people pay more for single aftermarket cap mass produced out of cheap plastic, I don't think it's an unreasonable asking price. Hopefully it will bring enjoyment to some collectors with a lot of disposable income.

I'd say the price is reasonable given the materials used. I know it won't be everyone's fancy but it's common for a timascus paracord bead to go for similar prices in the EDC market. Would it be possible to look into the option of a zirconium-titanium damascus(zircuti, darkti, etc.) keycap? I personally really like the dark grey contrast that the zirconium adds.

This for sure^ I'm not a huge artisan collector by any metric, but I would definitely spring the $200 for one of these caps if I have the spare cash when it's in GB. These are straight up beautiful IMO & then they are made from a very expensive material that is very hard to work with. So to me the price is definitely justifiable.

I am sure Salvun wants to do different materials as well.  lets say this is the first time we make our feet wet at this seeing if there is actually a demand for it.

For that price you could consider adding actual bling. Here's one of my prototypes with a ruby:

When the world of iced out jewelry meets mechanical keyboards; this could be really interesting.

Ahh damn, I think if I can get one sub $200 I’d probably have to pounce. Hopefully a handful of these get made.
