IBM Model M SpaceSaver 1391464 $55

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170291981873&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123

Looks interesting, but check out the CTRL and ALT keys, and notice that it looks like the F keycaps have been replaced with something else. Backspace is also odd. Also, check out W, R,T,Y,U and the other keys that have a bit of writing under them.

Interestingly, the model # isn't listed in wikipedia, which is pretty exhaustive. Im guessing by the way it looks that it might be a keyboard for a specific application, such as an airline terminal, or connected to some odd mainframe or something. Says "tested", but it might be wise to confirm its a normal connector before buying.

Nice - I'd consider bidding, but it's another 'no international bidders' auction.

Never mind - if I can get hold of a space saver I think I'd rather mine was the standard config instead of being a bit freaky!

I've never seen one in UK layout though - do they come up on UK ebay often? Or, going by the fact it's still on lam47's wishlist I'm guessing it's somehting of a rarity... :(

You might have more luck on Japanese auction sites.

Nice find! - I'll take your advice and have a dig around on some of the Japanese sites.

And I think I'll have a rummage around in the dead computer cupboard at work tomorrow. I'm pretty sure there are a couple of old M's in there and you never know...

Don't worry - if there's anything worth having in there I'll be sharing the wealth!

It's been a couple of years since I had a look through and my only worry is I'm now a generation too late and all I'll find are 350 knackered membranes!

afaik the space saver was never made in the UK layout by IBM but some were converted by Unicomp.
Not translated it as I'm lazy but there should be info here.

Cool - I think I should just get used to vanilla US layout. Looks like it makes keyboard fetishism a lot easier... :o

I'm doing OK with it. So long as the backspace is not only one key wide I don't miss hit too much. I do sometimes type # rather than return when I'm excited or in a hurry though.
The reason you may find more UK layouts in Japan is because they are more like the Japanese layout than the US boards. Its worth a look I think.
I have used yahoo Japan to win some cool stuff (not keyboards)
There are services that bid for you etc.

No, never seen these either. But QWERTY 'boards are rare here. I'm pretty sure there were no localized versions of the space saver for Germany or I would have seen one yet. Maybe they didn't localize it. Or for less countries than the standard Model M.

Its a disease... I couldn't resist... I saw it sit there for two or three hours and kept thinking of the interesting keyboard layout... its early manufacturing date, the absolute rarity... And I bought it.

As Repoman said, it was just so freaky, I couldn't resist... Yes, mechanical keyboard collecting is turning into an obsession...

I think it was a good buy.
If only there were more for sale in the UK like that.
Its the shipping that kills from the US to the UK

Yeah the shipping is always crazy. I had a fullsize M sent over to Czech with US post, which is quite reasonable, and it came up to $40. So my plan now is to collect in the States about 5 or 6 of the boards I've been wanting then send them via slow boat to Europe and get a nice big present here a month or two later.

I wondered who wouldn't be able to resist! I hope you enjoy using it when it finally shows up - and hopefully we'll be seeing a few snaps of it once you've had a chance to polish it up a little!

On a separate note I'm thinking along the same lines as andb. My Sister and her family are moving to New York this month so hopefully that might serve as a stopping off point for a few US sourced boards on their way to a good home.

Now if only I had family moving to Taiwan... ;)

I've been looking for quite some time for an ISO layout (85 key) IBM Model M spacesaver and the only references I could find were about one produced by Unicomp, model # UNI04C6 (the same as in your link).

According to Jim Owens, which I contacted, they have been produced/converted between 2000 and 2003 and shipped only in the US English layout (the extra key is not used, it just duplicates the  "|\" one).

Finding one for sale has been quite hard. Unicomp doesn't have any in stock and I've never spotted one on eBay. They seemed to appear from time to time on Yahoo Auctions Japan (once or twice a year) and I ended up buying the first one that appeared, through Crescent Shop.

Once I received it, I replaced the key tops with those from a donor 1391405 (full size Model M spanish layout) and "converted" it to a spanish localized IBM Model M space saver.

I've been quite happy with the result and it has been my primary board for some months, until it has been replaced by my actual favorite, the softer Cherry ErgoPlus.

You say alas but it is an IBM that has been converted. Now I dont know what exactly that entails but I'm confident that the quality is not any worse than an original IBM.

I cant wait to get my UK space saver.
The lovely picture xsphat posted makes me want it even more :)

Ah, the Model M Space Server.  Serving space to your desktop since 1986.
