    BOX 75
    "A box that provokes."

    dks | Lin Design Studio

    PREFACE

The BOX75 began as a project to design a keyboard I would use personally.
The name, "Box", pays homage to a response from Japanese architect Tadao Ando. When asked what architecture is to him, he replied "Chohatsu suru hako," or "the box that provokes"; and the BOX75 seeks to do just that: a black box measuring 20mm thickness lifted by a series of interlocking thin frames.
The frame as a structural expression that is part of the keyboard also supports the keyboard itself. My hope is that one looks at it and wonders how it comes together.

Cool design (saw your photos on Insta).

Just as a suggestion, you may consider changing the name of your studio to something different.

There is already a very well known designer that goes by Linworks. Calling yourself Lindesignworks is going to be confusing.

It's a really nice and simplistic design as I've seen on your insta. I'm really curious to see how it is built. However 50 units will most likely cause the price of the kit to be very expensive and not sure if i'm willing to spend a lot for this design.

So you've copied the central element of the Church of the Light, but turned a beautiful expression of negative space into something resembling a coffee table with applied embellishments. I'm not sure what this is supposed to provoke, but I can tell you I don't think Ando would approve.

    Show Image

Thanks for your comment. The design itself has nothing to do with the Church of light, or Tadao Ando in fact. The mention of Ando only relates to the use of "box". I am glad you are provoked nonetheless.

Will the leg edges be slightly rounded as to not scratch/dig into a desk or deskmat? I like the nice flat even look for the legs but have concerns that if the board was accidentally shifted it would scratch the desk/deskmat.

Really interesting board, interested in joining! There seems to be a layout disperenscy between the renders and the layout photo. The function keys are going to be 1/4/4/4/1 like the renders instead of the 1/4/5/3/1 right? I love how the lines go through the board; the structural expression you mention really sticks out to me.

Good catch. The function keys will be as the prototype photos and renders. Layout is updated as well. Thank you.

    definitely a unique design!
visually pleasing but might suffer from hollow sound with no additional bottom weight and tall legs.
do you have any plans to record a typing test with the prototype(s)?

I do like the design, however I do have concerns with the support system. All it takes is some unevenness on the legs or the surface and you could be typing on a wobbly keyboard. Additionally, I feels like I could scratch the legs if I don't use a deskmat, and if I do use deskmats it might introduce wobble because deskmats are squishy to a certain extent. Honestly I don't know how much these factors will come in play in reality, but I do think those are things to look out for.

Bl4ck is correct, there will be die cut rubber bumpers to pad the legs to give it some grip and reduce vibration. In terms of the support system, the design actually utilizes 6 points of support instead of just the 4 legs (2 rear, 2 on the side, and 2 longer surfaces at the front). There was no wobble prior to installing the rubber pads, and after installing them I am quite confident that it would not be an issue.

The accent pieces, "bars," are mirror polished stainless steel. Black PVD on black ano would be beautiful and is something I had in mind for a while. However, similar to Zava's comment on having a brass option for the accent, I am aiming to keep the options limited to reduce complexity. From a design standpoint as well, the original intent was and still is "stainless steel on black" to reproduce the contrast you see with a white on black setup: the black recedes to the background and emphasizes the accents.

For what it's worth, there's already an established maker using the name Lin. Maybe best to avoid confusion and change early on whilst you can? I don't personally care but just wanted to point out in case you didn't know.

Cool design (saw your photos on Insta).

Just as a suggestion, you may consider changing the name of your studio to something different.

There is already a very well known designer that goes by Linworks. Calling yourself Lindesignworks is going to be confusing.

Thank you both for the reminder, I am aware of that! A name change is possible but unlikely. Lin is, literally, the name I was born with, and its great if it's another designer's name too, I like this name. However, we do have very different approaches to design and I hope the designs are enough to differentiate us.

The photos in the IC are of the actual R1 prototype—the shots with the wooden floor. What I meant was the album will be updated again once the pcb arrives, apologies if the wording was confusing, I’ve rephrased it.

What you have actually designed is a keyboard that looks like it was designed by Le Corbusier in the 1930's.  It has the potential to be very beautiful.

Thank you for the comments. Now that you mention it, it does remind me of the industrial designs from Le Corbusier. The black and silver material palette combination is also seen in Mies and Breuer's works. I am humbled that you compared this to the classics!

As for the prototype, Round 1 is in the album and I will be updating the PCB pictures once they arrive. Round 2 proto is in design stage currently.

It's a really nice and simplistic design as I've seen on your insta. I'm really curious to see how it is built. However 50 units will most likely cause the price of the kit to be very expensive and not sure if i'm willing to spend a lot for this design.

Love the design. Waiting for further info update :thumb:

Wow this design looks absolutely amazing. Would you consider vendors to be part of this so that you can produce more than 50 units of this beautiful board? If yes, please don't forget us EU folks  :thumb:

Love the design and the inspiration for this.
Hopefully I will be able to purchase one.

Glad to share some updates: Mike from Novelkeys will be the US Vendor for Box 75. More information soon to follow, along with other regions. Thank you all for the support so far.

Every time I see this I like it more and more. Initially I thought it was just really odd and kinda passed it off, now I'm looking at it and feeling it's pretty unique and I would be incredibly satisfied to go to my desk and see this piece of art sitting there ready for me to type on. Definitely following this and will grab if I'm able!

but this design looks really unique.

I hope the implementation of this design will be on point, GL!

Come to the 75% side. You want it.

Looks really incredible, will definitely try to get one if full ISO compatibility will come: Although ISO compatibility of PCB is confirmed I’d also like to +1 an ISO compatible plate. :)

I love that you have decided to build in beautiful legs as an extension of the board instead of an angled base.  Really original design.

Hoping to see some exciting accent colors like pink.

Round 2 Prototype order has been placed with the manufacturer; they are in the works currently. This round of prototypes will come in both colorways. Details to follow in the next month or so as I work with the manufacturer. We will also have more information on the GB after this.

This board looks amazing in white w/ black accents, I can't wait to pick one up. Though my one suggestion would be to add a Canadian vendor to the vendor list (if at all possible), it's so insanely expensive to ship from the states.

This is gorgeous, very striking. ISO in the pcb means I'm in - consider this another vote for a matching plate

I don't think how many people realize or fully appreciate how much work went into this IC. The rendering, the product positioning, the message, the design thoughts, and everything. While this isn't my style for boards, but man, respect.

A few ICs give me this feeling of completeness, and they're this one, GMK Maestro, and GMK Stealth.

This is hands down (for me) that absolute best convergence of looks and practicality i have ever seen in a key board layout. (I still think HHKB look the best, but it's just not practical for me)

Thanks! The accent pieces is not one piece, but actually multiple pieces screwed into the case in a particular order to create the structural frame. This kit-of-parts diagram we posted on Instagram illustrates the separate pieces if you want to see more.

I'm more of a lightweight & portable case person, but I just want to say that I really like the 75% PCB layout. That button at top right is what I really need - a button instead of a rotary encoder.

Second round of protos have arrived. We are preparing for GB with the vendors and will be releasing dates, prices, format and options. Target GB date is for this month.

There are streamer builds scheduled and will be announced here as well.

We've also been working on some new content, including this website where you can learn more about BOX 75 and future projects: www.lindesign.studio

A little late but happy new year! Stay safe and take care.

I enjoy this 75% layout, however, the design is not to my taste nor does the pricing make it convincing for me especially since it's unlimited. Good luck with the GB!

Okay so some good news for you two, and others. Jo's idea was quite effective and I've reached out immediately to Mykeyboard regarding this. We're working a plan out but the gist is Mykeyboard will be offering ISO plates separately during the GB themselves. I'll have more details on this but thank you for the feedback.

I was not expecting that.  Thank you both for this news.  I was going to support and buy before this and now my order is certain.  If there is any say in the matter I would prefer and would pay for an FR4 plate or forged carbon plate.  This board would deserve it.

      Again thank you both.

The real problem is that they are both beautiful, each in their own way.
