I was somewhat excited to see this because I am interested in both calligraphy and sumi-e art in general. I do like the color scheme of the keycap set, which is the most important part. However, the rest of the product could use some work.First I have to apologie for the calligraphy, but I'm not able to proper write or even read in Japanese. Im actually from germany and just satisfied with japanese culture.
First, why was the hiragana set called "Ainu"? The Ainu are a race of people from the northern parts Japanese islands with a traditional culture quite different than the Japanese. It seems a bit out of place here, but maybe there is a relevant history I am unaware of.
Next, with apologies to 黒土さん, the deskmat artwork looks amateurish to me. I'm not qualified to speak on the drawings, but at the least I can say that 「インク」 is not well written. The brush strokes for the ン are even backwards. It would probably best to remove the word entirely as the katakana doesn't fit the theme in general.
Edit: Just realized the signature stamp is 墨. Whoops. I thought it was the artist's name, but now it's obvious. And I'm unsure why you would have "Sumi" as the artist's signature.
I'm glad you are open to criticism, because I think this is a cool project.I changed it!
At the very least you should change the name from Ainu. They were a completely different people with their own language and their land (northern Honshu and Hokkaido) was taken over by the Japanese in relatively recent history. The race of people that became what we think of today as the Japanese are the Yamato (大和民族).
Edit: This isn't to say that the modern Ainu (or Ryukyuan people for that matter) aren't Japanese. They certainly are, just as much as those people of Yamato heritage or even more recent immigrants to the country. But sumi-e is not something anyone would associate with their culture.
gimme that deskmat
I do however want all of these deskmats. Please consider putting them all out. I'd buy one of each easy.
Not going to lie i'm not really considering GMK Darling becasue the Deskmats didn't turn out too great and they dont have hirigana alphas. This one ha hiragana alphas AND 3 awesome deskmats so i'm already considering it greatly.
Those deskmats have the same problem as Mizu deskmat, when you put the keyboard on it you can't see the fish, and Mizu even had bigger fish on it.
And if anyone actually cared about the Japanese aspect of keycaps people would include caps that help with typing in Japanese (the hiragana/katakana/romaji toggle or the half-width/full-width button) or even full JIS compatibility sets. No one uses the hiragana sublegends to type in Japanese, so it's nothing more than a novelty people can't even read. Only one other person pointing out the misspelling in Japanese in the mat shows that.
I disagree with those saying that hiragana sublegends match the theme. Sumi-e is often minimalistic, and double legends look cluttered to me.

Latin only alphas to me look uninspired and western, and could mean anything red black white
And FaKe_VirTual, do you have any ideas for novelties? If you plan on doing them and need ideas, a black on white enso (Zen circle) could be pretty cool if it's not too hard for manufacturing.
Here's an article on the subject:

I saw that your adding the Hiraganas to the base kit but i think it would be even better to just offer the alpha kits separately from the mods; this way ppl that want the one not included in the base kit don't get priced out; also helps out the ortho ppl, further not pricing them out making moq more manageable.

Pretty sure GMK makes it prohibitively expensive to have separate mods and alphas.
Wow, 6 backslash keys in the Yamato kit! That must be a new record! However, was the top row backslash key in the lighter color maybe meant as a backtick/tilde key?
Decent set. I'd like to see icon mods also and R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn. Especially the Ghost Koi mat is fabulous.
No 1.5U Supers makes me sad
QQ. Is it intentional to have upper nav keys to have the same color as default alphas? Guess it's more common to have all mods in the same color? (and possibly alpha color mods as extra in the base kit or in another sub-kit)Yeah, that was intentional. I just wanted this set to be a little different in many ways.
Actually I meant the other way around. If you follow the convention, all mods should be white (except accents) and alphas should be black.Ahh okay, now I get what you mean. This is definetly going to change, Thanks!
If you have 75% or 65%, and your base kit remains as is, there is no way to fill navs with 1 color, either black or white.
You may want to add R1 white home and del key to support 65 and 75% while keeping your theme intact.

This is an awesome set !
I love the subtle black thats not quite black and the creamy white- though I worry how well thats reproducible in plastic.
Are you planning to order some color samples or do you know if these are colors used by other sets ? (I'm guessing no on the second question as the colors are custom )
Everything in the Spacebars kit will be convex, right?
Everything in the Spacebars kit will be convex, right?
I would imagine they would be standard GMK molds? I did not even know there was any option?

I think 1.25c and 1.75c molds now exist, so the whole spacebar kit should be convex. (Previously 1.25u and 1.75u "spacebars" were basically blank shift keys but the new convex versions give them a nice curve which is much more comfortable for spacebars.)
Everything in the Spacebars kit will be convex, right?Yeah, they all should be convex
Can you render with a white case please?
Can you render with a white case please?
100% un-official and just a quick Photoshop of the color, but here is a rough idea of what it will look like on a white board. I am sure they will release much better renders on white when the GB opens.

Awesome, can't wait to see how it'll be!
I'm definitely in for one of dose mats.
So have you decided not to offer a icon modifiers kit too?
I'm sorry for the small delay, but I think it will be next week till the release of the Update. All good man. Excited to see what it brings!
RAL 5004 is dark blue and CR is black.
Anyone able to share some insights of how this Pantone RAL 5004 compares to GMK's CR?RAL 5004 is dark blue and CR is black.
Thanks!
Okay, so I think there are problems with having the Home/PgUp/End/Delete et cetera keys black when they're for TKL-like layouts, but cream when they're for 65%s or 1800 style layouts. If you want to put Home/PgUp/PgDn/End in the top row for 1800 layouts, you end up with black/black/cream/cream. Similarly, if you want to have Home/PgUp/PgDn/End in a column on the right of a 65%, you get black/cream/cream/cream. You need to rethink something there, or just add a lot of keys.
Would you be open to the possibility of a desk mat that is the tree one, but without the sun? That would be even better! Hmm... more headache.
bonsai without the sun
ghost koi, koi, sakura
bonsai with sun - guess this has too much red
I'd buy at least both koi mats, but likely buy all 4.
Any chance of mats being delivered before keyset? I understand things are kind of up in the air with coronavirus and all.
Thanks!
They're all beautiful either way, I just thought the bonsai might look a little more slick/flow with other keysets without the sun, or a smaller one. Like the sakura, too, but I don't know if I could own it. One of my high school crushes had a sakura tattoo, so usually I think of her when I see them.
Not sure about others' opinions but as a Chinese reader, the novelty with more than two words look awkward for me especially '盆栽' and '精神', no offend but looks so silly

Awesome kit! Are there 2 2.25u shift keys to fit a fc660m? Sorry I can't tell by the screenshot...
Thanks.

There aren't at the moment. The extra 2.25u Shift is one of the keys that's missing.
R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn and extra 2.25u Shift in the base kit, please. Those keys are more common that the 2u Shift, stepped 1.75 Control and 1.5u Supers that you have in there now. Also, if you want to have 1.5u Supers for Mac and true HHKB layouts, you should add a second 1u Alt.
You also need to add a white R1 Home and white R1 PgUp if you want to cover 65%/75%/1800 layouts without mixing colors in the right column or above the numpad. Instead of doing that, I would just change all of the current 65%/75%/1800 keys to black (that includes: R1 Delete, End, PgDn; R2 PgUp; R3 PgDn; R4 End, Fn) and then just add a white R4 1u Fn for 60%s. This also lets you add R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn without needing to add a white R2 Delete.

Oooh tell me the red infill on the Rama caps glows in the dark
not sure if I'm going to get this, but if I did, I'd want to use it with a numpad with split plus. you offer the - and + keys for the positions of the 2u plus, but there are no black mods that I could put above the minus key then (except for the F13, which doesn't feel like it would belong there). can you add a black = key or something like that for that position?
also, did you intend to only put beige 6u spacebars in the spacebar kit? it seemed like black would be the "standard" color for spacebars here.
what's the reason for 2 1u Fn keys in base? I find 1.5u super support in base also questionable...

Most sets' spacebar kits opt to go with an accent color for the 6.25u and 7u spacebars, and alpha color for the 6u spacebar since one isn't included in the base kit.
what's the reason for 2 1u Fn keys in base? I find 1.5u super support in base also questionable...Yep, I don't think there should be two 1u Fn keys.
Any plan for additional Alphas (e.g. reversed color)?
Any plan for additional Alphas (e.g. reversed color)?
No, I don't think that I will add reversed alphas. This is because I think there are enough completly white Sets out there and the all white theme wouldn't fit sumi-e in my opinion.
Sorry.
I posted some comments in the Reddit thread, but I wanted to quickly say that I love the Rama caps. I'm definitely in for the 墨 one and the base set.
Good work on the vendors too! I've had good experience with thekey.company. I'm excited about July.

I guess 墨 means black ink? Why is it red in the RAMA keycap?

Hmm... interesting. It looks good with the mats but not sure about artisan cap but still you probably want to keep red in the escape spot. Tough.

I could offer a red version of it with black infill like this:Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/nxtQU5Z.png)
The Kanji text on the second row of novelties look very jarring, plus they don't fit the theme or make much sense to native speakers. Would prefer a different font and different text.
Circular brush stroke is dope though.
I would definitely be in for some deskmats. Love the keycaps, but I only have topre :'(
Good luck!
Nice, I have a Topre form daily use. But also have a cherry profile keyb to play with keycaps. Perhaps something to thing about; but watch out for the rabbit hole (not saying you should get another keyb though :))
Awesome deskmat. Well done! I just woner when GB is started?July 1st according to Candykeys Instagram.

The Spacebar Kit - Man of Culture 文化の男
OK, let's start this GB, come on:)
I think this is far too many 6u spacebars. And don't get me wrong, I like and use 6u more than most people (4 boards and counting), but 4 of them in a spacebar kit is too many. You should be fine offering just one (black, centered stem), in fact, or two at most (either one black centered, one black off-centered; or one black centered, one white centered).
I will soon be releasing an Update with all relevant news to GB, Kit updating and so on.
I would love to see how this looks on a Milk U80
You will post updated info here or there is some other dedicated place for that?
I am new to this hobby, so I don't want to miss this info.
I would like to join.
Very nice set indeed, my only gripe is to consider a R4 ろ instead of the む in the Yamato kit. Kana input users would definitely appreciate it

Do you know of any boards or PCBs that are MX and JIS compatible? I saw on your Masterpiece page that you got the KBDFans Tofu most of the way there with the む and ろ, but it's missing the space bar / 変換 button changes. I built an ANSI style 3 key split space bar board recently to try to imitate the 変換/無変換 functionality, but I'm sure it could be better. And I can't seem to get the QMK 変換 and 無変換 buttons to work so I'm making do with Enter and Space.
I'm sure I could improve my Japanese typing skills, but my reason for doing this is that my pinky was getting tired from hitting the Enter key so much.

I know a PCB indeed. Take a look at the MJ65, it's even open source. The whole build guide is on japanese though.
So, when does your GB start? :D
You may want to consider putting the 6.25 white spacebar in the base kit. I think this is pretty standard.nah, the alpha color is black, if another spacebar could be added to base kit, it should be in accent color(a.k.a red)
And when is the GB again? =)
I love love love these colours but I'd like to add my voice to the users saying please add JIS R4 ろ and R1 ー keys to the hiragana set! I actually touch-type using kana input in Japanese, so any set that doesn't include these is almost unusable for me :-(
This is my first post -- I signed up to geekhack to say this -- but now I'm here I hope to be more active and to lend my voice to the minority of actual JIS users who want to type in Japanese! よろしくお願いします!
but if any kana key would do why not replace it with ろ which would be correct for JIS users and still perfectly usable for ISO users? Similarly for the R1 む which for JIS users should be ー.
I don't mind having both, but if you're looking to reduce overall number of keys it's just a thought to keep total key numbers down but still satisfy both sets of users. Would that work?
Awesome, I am in!
Really would have liked to have the white 6.25u added to the base as standard. Any chance for that?
Not a big fan of the small boxed Japanese characters on the deskmats. The deskmats look really good though

Just took another look at the hiragana set and the R4 and R1 む seem to be there just to fill the gaps for ISO/ANSI users who want to fill the slot with some sort of kana (since JIS only requires む on R3). I know that usually む goes on the key with ?/ on it, so it makes sense that an ISO user for example would want to put "that key" at the bottom-left -- but if any kana key would do why not replace it with ろ which would be correct for JIS users and still perfectly usable for ISO users? I think a big part of the problem is ignorance and lack of documentation — something I've tried to fix (with the knowledge I have). It'd be great if you, Konstantin and I gathered together and produced a document that keycap set designers could use as their main reference.
…
Funny you should mention that -- I started writing a document soon after making this post! I think you're right, as evidenced by the fact that people have been really receptive to this sort of feedback when I've given it (including this kit, which replaced the R4 む with ろ within 24 hours of my suggesting it!). I'd like to try and distil the various considerations that keycap designers and keyboard builders might want to bear in mind into a single post (or set of posts) which we could link to in our sigs to raise awareness across the board. I think it'd be really helpful! Perhaps we should begin a thread somewhere to pool ideas?
Is the first deskmat based off the Sun or the Moon? The Bonsai deskmat is based of the iconic red sun.
Some feedback on the kits after the latest update:
- The second 1u Alt in the base kit isn't required since there are no 1.5u Super keys. You can either remove it outright, or move it to the 40s kit if you want to support ortho layouts that use 2× 1u Alt.
- 1.75u space keys are only used on 40% boards. You should at the very least move them from the spacebar kit to the 40s kit, or you can even remove them altogether (according to the 40% Discord, they're only used on three boards in total: Vortex Core, Daisy and JD40/45).
- I would also suggest including some other space keys in the 40s kit, otherwise 40% users are forced to buy the spacebar kit as well.
- See how GMK Deku (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=105484.0) did its hiragana sublegends for the R1 \| and ISO keys.
- R1 \|む should be changed to \|ー (the sublegend character is a kana, not a regular dash).
- R3 \|む should be changed to #~む or R4 \|ろ should be changed to <>ろ.
- In short, this makes the sublegends compatible with Japanese layouts, and also avoids duplicate \| legends for ISO people (i.e. it makes Jae happy).
- Some keys have quaternary (top right) sublegends: 、。・「」, while others, like those on the num row, don't. If you don't like the double sublegends, you should remove them from all of the keys.
- Speaking of hiragana, see how GMK Oni (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=105137.0) did its monolegends kit.
- You're missing a R1 ー key: again, this is for compatibility with Japanese layouts (more details here) (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=105137.msg2898781#msg2898781).
- However, what this set does better than GMK Oni is it includes spacebars, which makes this kit viable as a standalone purchase.
- I personally don't think you need numpad 00, but it's cool if you decide to leave it in.
- Just to make sure, is the blank R1 alpha character meant just as a replacement for F13?

First, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to write this comment.
Regarding your advices: 1. You're right with this, I think I will remove it from the Base kit. There might also be a last minor change, because I've gotten some messages regarding the JIS-Layout compatibility and I wanted to include it with my set. I think the change will also complement issues 4., 5. and 6.
And for clarifiaction the Blank key comes into place as a neutral key that can either be used as F13 key or as replacment for " - " if you decide to use R2 " - ". (Also I wanted a reference of RAL 5004 so I did also include it for that purpose :P)
I just added the JIS-Layout compatibility to the Set for those who asked for it.
This did also fix some aestethical problems.

Although I noticed you've kept the top-right sublegends on the ,<, .>, /? keys. Was this intentional?
Is the design for deskmat final? The red character bothers me especially with Koi and Ghost koi.
Although I noticed you've kept the top-right sublegends on the ,<, .>, /? keys. Was this intentional?
Yes that was intentional, because for them function went over form in my opinion.

Alright. In that case, would including the を (wo) kana above the わ (wa) kana on the 0)わ key be something that you would also consider? Explanation: Unlike the quaternary legends on the rest of the number row keys, which are just smaller versions of the existing ternary kana legends, the を atop わ is a different kana altogether, so function might surpass form in this case as well.
Can we get a reverse version of the bonsai deskmat. That would be really awesome!+1
I love the ghost koi desk mat, I want to like the key sets, but just not a fan of jap legends.

I'm sure you didn't mean it this way, but abbreviating "Japanese" as "Jap" is generally considered an ethnic slur in English (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jap). Just a friendly FYI for the future. :)

haha same here. how long have you been in japan? i have family there
Although I noticed you've kept the top-right sublegends on the ,<, .>, /? keys. Was this intentional? CV
FaKe_VirTual, have you had the chance to think this suggestion over?
Yes, I did think about it, but sadly the Kits have already been sent to GMK for a price reference, so it would cause a lot of trouble changing this by now.
I'm sorry for that.

Alright, no worries. FYI, during the Yugo IC/GB, we were able to change one of the legends that was incorrect way after we had finalized the kits (we realized too late that it was incorrect). As long as it isn't adding or removing keys, the quotes are still valid and GMK are very open to discussing changes like that, since, at the end of the day, it results in a better product.
Then I will try my best to change it! Thanks for making me aware!

So this black is like ink-black, not quite black is it?
like very dark grey?
Also, that white is like off-white? like dirty white, isn't it?
Man that red Rama cap looks so awesome shame it didn't make the cut.
Have a look at the new renderings of Sumi with the ORI 87, made by BruceDinh.
You can see the ORI over here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=106031.0 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=106031.0)

What do you mean? Was there a third Rama cap that got cut? Can't remember seeing one.

The "Black" is a very dark blue, which looks like black at the first glance, but if you look closer, you can see that it's blue.
The white is GMK's WS1, a slightly off-white with a minimal warm tone.

Dayum, that looks way better than the white Sumi cap. Especially considering the Torii cap is already in white (which I think is perfect).

Honestly I agree, this cap is gorgeous. Have the Tori gate + this red one. It's amazingMan that red Rama cap looks so awesome shame it didn't make the cut.

wait THIS ONE was cut??!! this one should be the one that gets made; white ones are nice too but i'd totally buy this one too if this was made
I think I need to give you guys a reason on why I cutted that one.
The point is that it wouldn't fit the scheme thats going on in the Set. As a standalone Cap it is nice, that's totally right, but with the Sumi-e inspiration in mind, it doesn't fit as good as the white one.
If you take a look at the Novelties, the red is always a minor accent, because the red colour is generally refering to the Hanko in Sumi-e paintings. There it's always just a small splash of red, which gives the painting a littble bit of vibrancy.
I don't want to get away from this inspiration, because with the all red cap, it would be straight in your face. I'm aware that the Basekit features the all red Esc and Enter Keys, but thats just because it's the Base kit and the full aestethic of Sumi will be reached with the Novelties in my opinion.
I hope that this clearifys the decision on why I cutted the Cap.
Hey Guys!
So we had a small change in our Vendor lineup. That has resulted in a changed GB Date.
The Groupbuy will be on the 15th of July. The new Vendor for NA is Project Keyboard!

I were able to change the requested things and the Hanko on the Deskmats, due to the vendor change.
With that being said, Sumi is now finished.

no word on pricing yet, right? im guessing $135 for base?

here's to hoping it's a little less. I know one factor that is considered in pricing is how many non-basic colors are used. what other things are looked at?
this might be a dumb question im asking but could i just purchase the hiragana set and the novelties for a 60% keyboard?
would that be enough keys?
Thanks!
From the July 15th GB, do we know how long will it run? And how many months are the targeted shipment date? Thanks all!
q2 2021 ? :( Thats like a year
Yeah I know. Goodluck with the GB. Definitely onboard this one.q2 2021 ? :( Thats like a year
Sadly yes, i mean we're near to Q3 of 2020 and the GB will end in August this year. Considering that it takes GMK about 7 Months to complete the whole production and QC, we're already in March to April. With shipping and so on, I think that Q2 of 2021 will be quiet accurate.
Trust me, I wish I could speed things up so the Set would deliver earlier, but that's outside of my possiblities.
Looks fantastic! I planning on getting these for my first build.Ink
Can anyone translate what the novelty keys say though?
Who's the artist that created the novelties?

Zen, Mu (Nothingness), Koi, Sakura
Cant wait
Will deskmats be delivered sooner than caps?
Is it me or are these changed color? Like these are darker now?
Dang, found out about this too late to provide feedback when it counted. I am so close to wanting this set but for the split legends being in the base kit. I feel like the fact that the hiragana only caps were the ones used in all the renders shows that obviously everyone involved thought it looked so much better, then choked that it's a whole extra set, instead of the mixed legends being the extra. Those renders look very much blue to me.
Also not sure if it's been brought up, but the final RAL for the red is very orange. I have an RAL color chip deck from the source and I haven't found lighting yet that makes it look like the red on the desk mats.
