Really need to build myself a 40%. Been holding it off for too long. One board a year is the rate I'm looking at... This year, a Diverge TM2 seems imminent. I also want to squeeze in a Gherkin build towards the end of the year if possible. Or maybe I'll reverse the order of it.... I wonder if linears or tactile feels better on PCB mounted keyboards.

Actually sitting down and building my increasingly growing pile of kits is my main goal.

Hall effect board arrives this February.

A 75% board.  Possibly a Plum 84 for a first Topre type board of any king.

Possibly a GH-122 for a battleship board.

Hopefully a mech-based Kenisis Freestyle board.  Please launch this year.  Please?

I need to sell the spare keyboards that I'm not using.
Ordered a new Leopold tenkeyless this year, hopefully my last keyboard purchase for a long while.
Maybe I should try Silent Red switches, although I dislike linears.

Some people have said the Plum feels very different from legit topre boards. I myself haven't tried it but just wanted to give you a heads up.

Alright, not really plans, but stuff that I find at least somewhat appealing…

  • IBM Model F or a modern replica. Not because I'd ever want to use such monstrosity for anything serious, but I'd like to play with capacitive buckling spring side by side with its membrane successor a bit.
  • XMIT's keyboards with damped Hall-effect switches, esp. the planned tactile variant. I don't care for the "standard" layouts anymore, and lack motivation to go through the hassle of designing a custom PCB for these switches, but it's something I want to at least try anyway.
  • Topre and/or respective Chinese clones—in various configurations (mounting, stiffness, damping, caps) side by side. I've used many high-quality domes over the years, and now want to reevaluate my relative view of Topre. Again, I don't care for the keyboard layouts anymore… except the Japanese ones; I kinda want a JIS tenkeyless realforce (probably damped with HiPro caps). That makes the cost difficult to justify, though.
  • Rarer switches from the "main" ALPS' product line. Blues, browns, ambers, yellows etc. I don't actively seek them, but if something falls in my lap, I'll give it a try.
  • New zealios, MOD switches, and hopefully vintage MX Clear/Brown switches again. I wonder, if I can feel the difference and esp. if it actually matters to me at all these days.
  • Various damped switches. Cherry MX Silent in other housings and with other springs; Zeal's/Uniqey's switch covers with various switches; JSpacers in various MX Blue generations and clones; various permutations of damped Matias/Alps switch parts,…
  • Properly contoured spherical caps, G20 caps and the new silica-gel caps on a full keyboard.
  • Kailh PG1350 switches look interesting. If they turn out well, along with caps, I might use them in a custom keyboard.
Speaking of custom keyboards, I should revisit my search for TECK or Maltron to restore. Recent attempts didn't work out too well.

end-of-year update:
  • Gave up on getting harder-to-get IBM/Topre/ALPS stuff. Tried some more revisions of IBM Model M and many different vintage rubber domes though.
  • Tried more damped switches (MX Silent, Zeal's and QMX clips), various jailhoused switches and a bunch of new Kailh switches (Box/Pro/Speed).
  • Didn't get any new keycaps.
  • Postponed endeavors further into ergonomic keyboards beyond my good old ErgoDox.

Given there's no actual Topre in a 75% format, I'm not really worried.  I'm more after the 75% part than whether it's a real Topre switch or not.

Quite content with my current topre keyboard. I think the only keyboard i would be tempted to buy is a hkkb due to form factor and i seem to move around a lot.

I tried chinese keyboards and audio(ch-fi), but it just left me unsatisfied.

I really need to replace too LOUD Tai-Hao Alps clones in my Strong Man keyboard. Little problem is I have no tactile non-clicky compatible switches. Only remains of dead Datacomp DFK-101 with blue Alps. Maybe more easy way is: to find what is broken in DFK-101 and use it with Strong Man case and keycaps. Yes, blue Alps are clicky, more loud, then is perfect for my taste. But Tai-Hao clicky leafs metal sound is really annoying. Keyboard looks as a wrong place for cathedral bells.
Maybe board with blue Apls, O-rings or landing pads, lubed switches and stabilisers will be ok.

Why'd you say that?

Short-throw Topre boards have a similar form factor, so does for example the MCRW-5000 keyboard.

If the GH-122 2017 version supports ALPS, I'll likely build one with Matias switches, move the Gateron one to work.

I finally finished my ErgoDox today. I may get a Topre board at some point. I'm hoping AcidFire will have the Axios done this year. I've got my fingers crossed. Now that my Typematrix has died, I'm going to tear it open and see what makes it tick. Maybe design one that's mechanical.

If I find myself with a bunch more money, I might pick up one of the many optical switch keyboards that are coming out now.

If not, I'm probably going to take it easy this year, keyboard-wise. Well, unless someone comes out with a TrackPoint-ed keyboard that meets my needs in terms of size and rollover. That I'd still jump on.

Buy a couple more Topre boards.

Figure out what to do with all the XTants that I built.

I've been noodling around with the idea of fitting a 65% layout in a 60% case, but have not gone much further than sketching out layouts.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

let's see, i'm already at end-game with 75% as i have my ergo pro and ve.a already.
i guess;
-GMK Plum/Nautilus.. decisions to be made. >still haven't made a decision
-try to look for a fullsize keyboard with left numpad (another run of LZ RV will be amazing) this will be my fullsize end-game with cherry-stotle switches. >Still trying
-as for 60%.... HHKB case from RAMA might make me buy HHKB again.EXENT.

pretty much i'm gonna be so finished for keyboards at 2017. maybe not gonna stop at keycaps, but pretty much for the keyboard.

11 days into 2017 and there's so many things that i gotta change from this lol.

2) If someone makes a nice set of Topre keycaps, or there are some Topre MX modifiers, that fit a Leopold, get that.
3) Sell my Codekeyboard MX Cherry clears. The 55gs is just too heavy for me.

Procrastinate on all my projects.
Buy more keyboard parts that I never use.
Maybe tinker with a keyboard design I have, but never finish it.
Get super-focused on coding over-engineered firmware for a couple of weeks, doing nothing else, and then leave it.

That... sounds a lot like my likely list. If you make the nouns more general, you described most of my nonprofessional life.

Actually, though, the last couple years have been about trying to stop that, with a little success. This year, I'm massively paring down the number of weird, random **** I play with to focus on design and metalwork. I bought a milling machine; a lot of it is being delivered tomorrow, the rest on Monday. With a little luck and assuming I manage to avoid doing something stupid, I should be able to cut in the comfort of my own home in a month or so. So hopefully I'll improve faster than I have been, only getting shop-time about once a month. (Although I'll still depend on the shop a lot - no lathe, bandsaw, buffer, grinder, etc., and there are hard limits on size, type and power consumption of equipment one can reasonably house in a second-floor urban apartment.)

So my keyboard goal for the year: make my own, including the PCB and some firmware modifications. I know I can cut the case, and coding is no problem. (Famous last words - I haven't done much embedded, but from what I've seen, this looks reasonable enough.) It will be my first PCB, so that's the portion offering me a serious learning curve and is the most likely candidate for not happening. We'll see.

Since I'm congenitally incapable of working on one thing at once, I have a few smaller things in mind as well, but they're still, if you squint, computer peripherals.

I'm mostly posting this so I can point and laugh at myself in a year.

Figure out what to do with all the XTants that I built.

How many are there in the end? I would just slap one at every computer you use :) Alternatively, hold some kind of contest. Or wait until summer secret santa :)

Back on-topic, kind of, start of 2017 was quite eventful:
- I finished my FSSK, almost - I need to disassemble it, because "C" is not working  >:D
- I assembled a NEXT and X68000 converters
- I converted and assembled the IBM Bigfoot
- I converted a 5140 keyboard with Teensy
- I wired the Alps AKB-3420, and I'm almost done with the converter - I'm out of Pro Micros for time being so I used Arduino Nano with V-USB, and defining matrix.c in TMK is giving me grief

All in all, I made 8 of my keyboards working in last 10 days. Quite a productive period. Shame it won't last :)

Hall effect board arrives this February.

A 75% board.  Possibly a Plum 84 for a first Topre type board of any king.

Possibly a GH-122 for a battleship board.

Hopefully a mech-based Kenisis Freestyle board.  Please launch this year.  Please?

Plums don't use true Topre rubber cups. They are 35g and do not feel like true Topre at all. They use (if not the exact) same rubber sheet that you can buy on eBay, the translucent clear 35g, 45g, or 55g. I highly recommend that if you are going Topre that you go head first into a RealForce, HHKB, Leopold, even a Novatouch if you can find one.

Not really concerned with it not being specifically Topre.  I might eventually look into a Topre RGB but that's the only actual Topre buard I'm interested in right now.  That I specifically want a 75% board puts the Plum 84 higher on my list than any true Topre cup board.

Now that I'm happy with my K65 setup I have to get a HHKB Pro2 and load it up with front printed keycaps. Depending on how much I like Topre I may or may not end up selling the K65, but for now it is more than good enough.

Find replacements for the various missing keycaps in my Model M collection. (List available on request—hint, hint!)

Handwire a clueboard with tactile switches.

Build a super cheap keyboard with my brother. (If anyone can link a cheap case and pcb that would be superb)

1. Continue to collect artisans (there's certain designs I love but haven't had the chance to purchase/trade)
2. Make a MX board with layout similar to HHKB JP.
3. Learn PCB designing (at macro/numpad would be good start)
4.* IF 2. and 3. works out then maybe  make it so others can get a board.

Eh, I think i'm gonna pass up the HHKB Pro 2 and get a Topre Type Heaven instead. Less money and it has dedicated FN keys and a numpad. Good for actually doing work I've noticed
