Would like to thank Raz for the renders and CCC italian community for the support

EDIT:
Some people from EU contacted us showing messages or mails by Fedex asking custom fees and shipping coming in the next days. Hold on for a moment:
- It is a Group buy, you won't get anything shipped before 5-6 months
- Regarding the message that someone got from Fedex, ignore it, it was a mistake of an auto-generated tracking number, it isn't happening anymore on new orders

UPDATE: 6 November 2020

GB went very well and it will close soon  :thumb:
Last time we checked we had 30 orders missing to reach the limit, we should check again in few hours.

As announced, i wanted to announce final dimensions since many asked, but also to make some improvements and here we are!
(please don't refer at the colors of the renders below, also what is showed is the founder but these modfications are for the standard kit too)

Plates and mounting points changelogs (improved):
We were bothered by the many screws (16 before) and few people also noticed it. Our goal was always to remove some of them, but the problem was that the design had the whole plate touching directly the top and the plate was bigger than the top.
In a nutshell, just "removing screws" with the old internal top mount structure wasn't enough.  With the plate in direct touch with the top on a big area, removing screws would have lead to more vibrations (basically plate hitting/vibrating/flexing against the case), ending by making the sound worse. Yeah in that scenario, sturdy with many mount-points was better than flex with few mount-points for the sound, due the large area of contact between top and plate.

So we changed it internally. We added spacing on the internal of the top-case where the ends of the plate sits. By doing so, the plate started to have contact with the top of the case ONLY on the mounting point, reducing any kind of bad sound from the plate flexing and vibrating on the top case.

Basically we removed to the minimum any sort of contact between plate and top (the minimum is only the mounting point), which should be the ideal solution in a top mount keyboard. Once we did that, was pretty clear that removing the unnecessary screws was simple at this point and it would have been the best solution. At this point we also removed the side screws and also repositioned the mounting point in "smarter areas" (e.g. making the spacebar more free as possible from screws).
After alll the changes, we ended up with a better mounting, a better typing experience (especially on flexy materials like PC and alu as well), and in general more flex and less vibration.
Ended up having 8 final mounting points (also changed the mount from m2 to m2.5)

The improved mount system:

Modified plates here, also included some relief cuts, these won't do much but still, here we go:

Keeb size and height:
The keyboard was finalized so i can realease the current sizes, should be final now.
I adjusted the height slightly, around 2.5mm lower in height but also made all the sides 1mm thicker, in the image below you can find the final dimension (i also included flat and angled dimension). It should be totally easier to use now and also improve the sound (no waste of empty space internally).
Still a wrist rest is recommended unless you have big hands!

Founder logo:
The Founder logo was smoothed out, cuz why not...

Back Type-C hole:
Given how Type-c connects with cables, if the back of a keyboard is totally flat with the connector, the cable would always show some part of his "male-part" from the very top of the keyboard.
It was made a small recession-hole to make the cable more aesthetic once connected

Screws:
All the screws of the keyboard are now m2.5, Founder is sure to include gold colored screws (probably titanium screws, plated in a gold color, not brass screws because these are too soft).
For standard we will see!

PCB:
Since many asked, the PCB showed on Taeha Types stream wasn't the final PCB, it was just a prototype PCB.
The hotswap PCB will be some kind of KBD67MKII (v2), while we must still understand which will be the exact final Standard PCB.
Also ESD should be included with both the PCBs, but we will make sure to confirm this with Wei again (we should ask him again at this point).

Polycarb top not a selectable option?

You have to select polycarb bottom first, then the option to have polycarb top becomes unlocked.

For the Founders Edition, how easy is it to pick up the board? With the weight flush with the edges it seems like there's not much of a ridge/cutout to pick it up.

There is an angled very small cut to grip, but due the weight of the founder (5+ kg), you will not be able to use that. You will most likely end up getting it from the bottom (there are bumpers raising it a bit).
If you are planning to move your keyboard continuously and got the founder, maybe that will be hard :D

Just a quick update for buyers from EU;

1. For those who have received a an invoice to pay customs, IGNORE IT, do NOT pay.
This was just an automated tracking number made by KBDfans' site. (Its automatically created a shipping label whenever you purchase something)

2. KBDfans is currently talking to Fedex to cancel all of these, as they were not intentionally created

3. After talking to KBDfans, we've been informed that they will be looking into changing there shipping provider to DHL. This change will hopefully take place before the Melody65 starts to be shipped.
This change will result in lower custom fees (fees still vary depending on your location), however i cant give any exact values as of yet.

We will continue to update everyone as we get more info.
I hope this clears everything up!
Thanks

The uni-board has rgb underglow, not on top, so any keycaps will not show any rgb with the uni PCB, just your bottom will have rgb (if you also take the pc bottom).
If you want rgb on top, which will shine through keycaps and on the bottom of the keycaps, you should definetely go for hotswap ansi instead, which will make it also easier and better if you are a newcomer!

What is the length at the bottom if there is a final for that yet?
The reason I ask is because I am trying to get a wrist rest made ahead of time that would match or at least be close in height and width.

Thanks!

You should wait few weeks to have the final one.
Currently there is ~34.2cm in width and ~2.4-2.5cm in height
I might add 1 mm on width and like i already announced the height will be lower of about 3mm, so at the end it will be 2.1-2.2cm in height.
If you want to have something exactly like the melody, wait few weeks to get the exact final dimension

An update about 5 days from the start of the GB, we asked Wei about the current numbers.
Around 350 standard sold, +25 founder
150 units are still available

Also, old orders got a Fedex notification or sms, just ignore it (it was an automatically generated tracking, fixed now). We are not even sure that Fedex will be used at the end.

Also, a new render by Raz

Yeah many people were interested in that, got at least 20 people saying this on reddit or pm.
We didn't wanted it because it was already too complicated with the many options. I will consider it for the future, but for now we can only offer what we have in this gb and can't promise anything for the future.

Hey just wanted to know how many units are left at the moment. ^^

We are counting again and waiting for KBDFans answer on that. The thing is that  people are able to cancel orders, so we had to recount them.
Should be very few or soldout at this point, so if you are still able to buy, i would do it as soon as possible, but right now don't have the specific amount under my eyes

Absolutely not in-stock.
The previous seller/producer was YMDK and did that with the melody96, in my opinion this wasn't fair towards the people joining that GB, supported the project and waited months for it.
This is a totally different thing and product, KBDFans will not sell it outside a GB, we specifically asked that.

The only chance to buy later is if some cancel their order so we can re-stock their cancelled order (but these might go very fast). Regarding other GBs, there are no plan for R2 now so please don't count on that.

UPDATE
GB went very well and it will close soon  :thumb:
Last time we checked we had 30 orders missing to reach the limit, we should check again in few hours.

As announced, i wanted to announce final dimension since many asked, but also to make some improvements and here we are!

I adjusted the height slightly, around 2.5mm lower in height but also made all the sides 1mm thicker. In the image below you can find the final dimension (i also included flat and angled dimension).

I believe that even if these improvements might end up to increase the price slightly on our end, it could be appreciated for everyone to have a better keeb.
Let me know if you have any question, and thanks for joining our GB :)

With the newly updated mounting points, is it possible to place o-rings too? Maybe we can "burgerfi" it. Also, is the side profile with transparent PC going to be flush just like the SE verison?

Probably yes, but if you also want to use the case foam, you shuld go for thin o-ring/gaskets (e.g. 0.5mm), i cannot assure that tho
if i may just a suggestion, the burger mount makes the sound better when the plate touch on all the surface (just like it was before) and that's why i improved it, because the whole plate touching the case wasn't an optimal thing.
Now the burger mount shouldn't change much in the current state, you still can i guess, but make sure to use a thin one.

Regarding the side profile, the Standard Edition (PC or ALU bottom) is not flush, it's the angled one! With PC, the angled one will reflect the rgb better o the bottom of your desk

Is the number of units of Chinese GB and global GB different?
Already sold out at kbdfans.com, but still available for purchase at the Chinese version of kbdfans.

I can't access the kbdfans.cn because it redirects me (i need a vpn for that) but i can tell you that it was 500+25 units globally, not per region.
I think we sold slightly more units (e.g. 530 +25) to cover eventual cancels and because they forgot to close, but in general the limit is global

I still see the one on ".com" available, it should have been closed yesterday but i still see it open

If you are able to buy, they won't cancel, probably he closes the gb with different timing.

Basically he closed the gb correctly and the limit is reached, but if someone cancels their order, that specific configuration (e.g. one single color + one specific bottom) will return back, untill someone buys it. So you may see that is not sold-out externally from the melody65 page, but when you enter only one specific configuration might be available and the other are all soldout.

Just get in contact with Kbdfans and ask to change from hotswap-foams to universal foams, there will be no problem to change it, yes these foams will be different, the cuts will be precise to fit between components, stabs, hotswap sockets, etc...
If you don't solve the swap thing, write me back (in dm possibly)

I asked an update to Wei and will get back to you. I didn't update anywhere because i don't have an update yet and i was waiting for their festivals to end in order to ask again.
Theorically China should still be in the festival events until 26 afaik, but cny should be concluded so i asked and i believe Wei will reply soon.

We saw PC sample that i can't share yet because don't have any good picture of it and because is unfrosted. Also saw the brass coating. I asked wei for new photos of the rest, if they have.

Will update asap when i have news

Here is an update and the discord on the bottom.
Most of the factories re-started to work this week after CNY. Apparently, in mid-january when they asked if they could start the production, the actual production of cases didn't started because they had to do multiple tweaks, especially on PCB and bottom part of the case to make it more feasible to CNC (apparently was too prone to break CNC tips)

In the current state we have:
  • Foams tweaked, ordered and in production.
  • PCBs ordered after all the tweaks, not sure if in queue of production or in production, but order was sent. The final PCB will be black, they updated the connectors to motherboard and removed the unused extra connector.
The connector between main pcb and daughterboard will be this: https://i.imgur.com/X8kYaDK.png
  • Case tweaked multiple times, especially bottom, still in the pre-production stage teorically. If the last minor tweak they did (should arrive exactly these days) goes well, after testing, the actual production of cases will start as well.

They said PCBs and everything will end a lot sooner than case parts and that the harder part will be again brass parts (probably brass coating, for that they changed factory).
For now i must stick with the same 5-6 months bare estimation that i said from the start (i'm not sure if it's from start of GB or from end of GB at this point), but I asked for a more detailed estimation for the end of the production and i should have one this week, so i will definetely keep you updated on this.

Meanwhile i can show you 2 photos of an early sample (january) of the full PC case, which was tweaked now (keep in mind that the final one will be frosted)
More
Ignore the connector on the pcb

And this will be the coating of the brass parts (not a melody in the video)
More

I will show you other when i have other, CNY is over so Wei will keep me updated on this. They are definetely working on this and they have it in the priority list, now that all the festivals ended (almost) things will start to go faster.
Also i hear you, we need a discord. For now i didn't made any personal discord for the Melody65, but temporary you can use this https://discord.gg/z2eZq6VT, i promise to post all the updates here on GH, discord and reddit.
It is the discord of the italian community but there is a project section and there is the Melody65.

Stay tuned, there will be other updates in the next days, especially on more accurate estimation for the production end, probably also some pics. If you have any other question, feel free to ask here or in pm, as you prefer
Cheers

Another update, regarding only Founder Edition:
They said me today that they will start April 20 to produce the Founder Bottom so it is slightly late, they have to go slow on such a big surface of brass apparently

All the standard keebs are still planned to end production at the end of April and start to ship in May!

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Update 1:
Aluminium case cnc basically finished, for now i have only these new photos, anodizing also started, will post other colors when i have.
Mini album (4 photos): https://imgur.com/a/jjl4412

Regarding CNC now they are focussing on Polycarbonate bottom

Update 2 (IMPORTANT):
They informed me that they have to give up on the 35 TOP Polycarbonate because they can't find a Raw PC block thick enough to cnc it.
Wei looked for many suppliers but could not find any, top is very thick and apparently even big China can't offer such a piece. They tried hard but failed, these supplier said that they have never even produced such thick material.

Basically, 35 people bought the full PC (on a total of around 550 keebs) and full PC can't be done due the top being too thick. THIS IS NOT AFFECTING PC BOTTOM, bottom PC is in production.

They said they will contact these 35 people through mail directly trying to propose a counter offer, but if you don't get a mail in the next days, feel free to contact me as well.
What you can decide if you are one of these 35 people:
  • Switch to Aluminium (alu top+pc bottom or full alu)
  • Make the top with Acrylic (the bottom will still be PC)
  • Refund

So in general, a recap:
  • Full-alu boards except e-white and Navy will be shipped before May 31 most likely
  • PC bottom will end production May 31 probably, so later there should be QC and packing.  No date predicted from Kbdfans but i believe that e-white/navy boards and pc bottom boards will ship togheter, they have to confirm a date, but it will be June for sure
  • Founder still in production https://imgur.com/a/KnmXx0i

If someone cancel / cancelled the order, there might be extras, but don't expect a big amount, in fact i would expect few few units. I can ask kbdfans this once they start shipping.

Update time

UPDATE 1:
Unfortunately there was a mistake on the daughterboard, the producer made the screw points different from melody65 because he mistakenly thought the daughterboard was the same of another keyboard from KBDFans (there is another keyboard with a daughterboard very similar to the melody65) so he made it with these specs. The fixed daughterboard pcb needs 10 days to be re-made.
Photo of the problem: https://i.imgur.com/Nni7nvP.png

UPDATE 2:
All Aluminium keyboards are ready, including brass weight, we are just missing the daughterboard at this point. Once the daughterboards arrives, they should be most likely ready to ship, so let's say that the keebs will start to ship in about 15 days more or less. Hopefully nothing else happens. The only color not ready is Blue (which was re-made), but i believe that once the daughterboard are ready, blue might be ready as well.

Full album of anodizations here: https://imgur.com/a/nobrjaI
(the thing on the bottom of the keyboard is just a film to protect brass, just saying this because on some photos on mobile you might thing that there are bubbles or stains)

UPDATE 3:
PC and Brass bottom -  We are discussing this thing with KBDFans, will get an update before Friday, hopefully in 48h from now.
On brass this was the status 20-25 days ago, so i believe that on the next update we will see good news on founder bottom.
On PC, there is much going so please hold for the next update that will be this week.

UPDATE 4:
Box: the box changed.  It was a magnetic thing before, but KBDFans said that is not appropiate for shipping such a heavy boards and parts cannot be separated in such a package. Nothing to do about costs or other, in this box the parts will arrive separated: keeb, pcb, plate, other... and the shipping will be safer.
Album here: https://imgur.com/a/wjY3hAE

TL;DR Hopefully shipping starts in the next 2 weeks, sorry for the problem about daughterboards, will let you know when i have other news

The appearance of it is exceeding my expectations for sure. The white coating is nice.

Will the boards be plastic wrapped before being inserted into the packaging? Will direct contact with the foam discolour the board?

it will be probably paper-plastic wrapped before inserted, depending on what it is, but i'll ask this.  :thumb:
If not wrapped it would move too much in that box

UPDATE:
Shipping started yesterday so many of you might have got a mail/message from Fedex or DHL

Apart full-alu boards that surely started, I'm not sure which keebs version started to ship, so please if you didn't got any delivery message, it means that your keyboard still didn't shipped or your version isn't ready yet, don't worry, the rest might ship soon.
More updates when i have more news.

Cheers

UPDATE VIA

If the keyboard is not recognized by VIA out of the box (i'm not sure, i don't have my production units yet) use KBD67v2 for solder, KBD67mkii for hotswap.

  • Try to connect to VIA out of the box
  • If didn't worked, download these for VIA

    • if you have solder use the KBD67v2 firmw
    • if you have hotswap use KBD67mkii firmw

EDIT:
Apparently out of the box is already usable with VIA, so you can stop at step 1 :)

Nope. All the shipped units so far are Alu top+Alu bottom (any plate materials) so it's not abnormal that your keyboard didn't shipped yet.
Unfortunately i think PC/Founder are still in production or post-production because i don't have any update from KBDFans that changed that status so far, sorry for that.

Hold and hopefully kbdfans will give me good news soon, I won't expect big waits from now, but i just don't have an estimation for you rn

Progress Update:

About 4 days ago KBDFans said me that less than 85 on 550+ keyboards must ship. Now is probably less than this but i don't have the updated number.
Basically what didn’t shipped:

- FE keebs, but some people started to get shipping notification (today).
- Some keyboards with PC bottom OR/AND E-white top, because some of these parts still has to arrive to the warehouse (even if many people received PC bottom and/or e-white top already)

MY PC bottom has a deep internal defect that look like stress fractures. I have contacted KBDf via Discord and they said they will ship out a replacement but will take time :(.

Damn that look bad, seems external from the photo or is it really inside the PC?
Anyway glad you sorted it out with KBDFans already, sorry that you might need to wait for replacement but we are still missing some PC bottom and E-white for GB user.

Both external surfaces are smooth to the touch so I guess it's internal. I'm not a material science guy so that's all I know.

KBDf offered me $5, $10 for this defect instead of replacement... no thanks.

anyone else received 3 sets of screws and spacers(?) in sealed plastic bags are for? did the factory just out of convenience throw it in there and didn't want to separate from the rest of the tools?

The spacers/standoffs are in case of hotswap pcb, to make these people hotswap without opening the case (otherwise the pcb would fall)
Yes people with solder pcb got these tools as well, to avoid mistakes or to avoid that anyone with a HS melody65 could end up without these parts somehow :)

You are pretty much lucky, no R2 planned sorry, but there will be 100 extras in stock, ready to ship, in about 8 hours.
