Naked HHKB - don't look too closely!

My new daily driver
How are you enjoying yours? I am in love with mine, and I can't stand any mx except ergoclears anymore.

Absolutely loving it. It's perfect for my liking.
This feedback on my fingertips... I will sleep with it tonight.

Don't think I can look towards any other keyboard for a while, if ever . . .
It's like a cloud of boobs

Boobs pale in comparison to the cub rubber.

This layout is so intuitive. I think I'm already used to it first day.

The arrow keys are the only thing I am not fluent with yet and I have had mine for 3 days. I tried my Ergodox today and it is nearly impossible to type in without warning up for a couple of minutes.

Super quick and blurry pic of my work station for the week.  I have to bring the Novatouch Tester with me each day, but luckily I got a keyboard sleeve for Christmas (seen in pic behind the phone)  :thumb:

After this week once I send off the Novatouch to the next tester, I will be bringing my Pure with whites to work instead.

Ahh, yeah. I had an unfair advantage though. I got some practice through my KUL :)

LOL my sister thought I'm crazy but she said it's nice in the end.

What switches on the KUL? When I type in my poker with regular clears it is waaaay too stiff for me now.

MX reds at 45g, so it's the same weight. It's like reds with soft tactile feedback.

I am such a soft typist that these topres were actually tiring at the very start lol. I guess I couldn't do 55g.

I would like to try reds, I have one black switch and one gray switch, and I would also like to try a black keyboard, but preferably vintage so it is all smooth, because clears at first are super scratchy and need to be typed on to break them in and smooth them down.

Every now and again I take mine back to nakedness (with legends) just to remember what it was like.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Now I just need an HHKB custom title like you guys lol

I don't know if applications, are still open, but ... https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51282.0

Mods can assign those titles even if applications aren't open.  ;)

Would using a Novatouch allow the assignation of such a title?

Not the HHKB title, since it's not HHKB.  :P  But a different title, sure.  :)

Using my novatouch almost exclusively this week to try and get a better feel for Topre. Initial impressions are that it's an enjoyable typing experience, but not overwhelmingly better enough to pull me away from buckling springs or MX switches entirely.

I like the Novatouch better than any Cherry mx board, but it is rather remote from the best Topre experience, which can be found -- in different respects -- in the HHKB Pro 2 and RF 87u 55g. At the moment, I am typing on my new favorite, a KBP V60 Matias Click mini keyboard -- delightful tactile and aural feedback.

quiet alps > topre 45g (leopold fc660c) > topre 45g (silenced 87u) > topre 45g (hhkb) > topre 45g (typeheaven) > topre (non-silenced 87u)

Have no idea where Novatouch fits in.

Topre 45g is not bad on it's own - it WORKS - and does so with a minimal amount of personality.

If you want personality and sexuality - and all that goes with it - get the quiet alps.

The Topre TypeHeaven is the NovaTouch's worst nightmare.  As a consumer it is the product that made me question Coolermaster sanity given that at MSRP it's $50 cheaper AND includes a number pad.  Also for my liking it is lower profile and has a hardwired cable (will always trump detachable in my book.)

Now that the Novatouch is coming down in pricing - it's starting to look a bit more sane.

Yeah, I guess the only caveat would be the keycaps with the type heaven, whereas with a Realforce, you get a premium experience right out of the box.  Your testimonial has definitely made me want to try a type heaven now at some point.  :)

Nice pair! And honestly had I been able to acquire a 23U/B before I probably would have stuck with the regular HHKB, although mine was modded at the time.

Absolutely beautiful  Hypersphere, this will likely be my next pickup.  Is it hard to find aftermarket ALPS caps?  I've heard the stock ones on KBP V60 are less than desirable.

@Flyersfan1: Thanks. I actually have both the Click and Quiet Click versions of the V60 Matias switch keyboards. I like both of them and find it difficult to choose a favorite.

Yes, unfortunately, the stock caps on the  V60 Matias-switch keyboards are not the best, and it is a bit of a challenge to find replacement keycaps. However, Matias is starting to sell keycaps; this is where I got the blank black mods, and all of them worked, including all the ones with stabilizers -- even the spacebar. They should have them up on their site soon; in the meantime, you can order by sending an email to barb@matias.ca.

You can also harvest Alps-mount keycaps from vintage keyboards. Some are available with double-shot ABS and a few have dye-sub PBT. I got the dye-sub PBT alpha keys from an IBM 5140 convertible computer keyboard. Acer 6211 and 6312 keyboards also have dye-sub PBT caps, although they are not as nice as the IBM ones.

I am hoping that Matias or other companies will produce PBT keycaps, even if they aren't dye-sub. For example, for Cherry mx keyboards, Leopold makes some very nice PBT sets that are blank or with lasered legends either on the front or top.

At work I left all the original keycaps on the V60MTS because if IT needed to come by and use it they could at least figure out how to navigate/etc.

I also prefer PBT, and hope that Matias will start selling some (and not blanks).

Been trying to find some old boards on ebay with PBT caps, but I'm not sure which ones have them, and which ones don't.

When you ordered your black caps from Matias did they also have white ones available?

Worse of the two keyboards, have to use this on my main computer since my laptop does not have ps/2.

Better of the two. Both are rubber dome keyboards but this one has stabilizing bars and is really quiet and has a short travel distance so I like this one far, far more

Yes, on their "portable" p70/p75 and "convertible" 5140. The alpha caps on the 5140 are better than those on the p70/p75.

Aww, its part of a "laptop" so getting the keyboard only for a good price will be troublesome :'(

Yes, Matias has both white and black keycaps.

Some vintage Alps-mount keycaps in PBT can be found on Apple Extended, Wang 725-3770, Acer 6311/6312, IBM p70/p75, and IBM 5140 keyboards. In addition, double-shot ABS Alps mount keycapos can be found on some older Zenith XT-type keyboards, Zenith "laptops", SIIG Suntouch Jr., and Focus 2001 keyboards, among others.

Yeah I know of a few that have PBT caps. Thanks for the model numbers.

I do have a Dell at101w, but the spacebar and capslock won't fit.  So I'd have to buy two more boards. One for the PBT caps, and one for the capslock just to fill one of my V60 MTS's.  Then there's the spacebar.

still using ...

kbparadise v60mts clicky alps - home
kbparadise v60mts quiet alps - work

even though clicky are fine for FPS, I'm looking forward to trying the Matias Quiet Linear Alps out.

inbound from korea (and taking fo-ev-ah): i-rocks k20 tenkeyless (plunger over membrane) gamer board [just for lols.]

How would you say the quiet alps compare to topre 45g?

quiet alps > topre 45g (leopold fc660c) > topre 45g (silenced 87u) > topre 45g (hhkb) > topre 45g (typeheaven) > topre (non-silenced 87u)

Have no idea where Novatouch fits in.

Topre 45g is not bad on it's own - it WORKS - and does so with a minimal amount of personality.

If you want personality and sexuality - and all that goes with it - get the quiet alps.

What are your ranking criterias? Are you ranking them on their quietness or tactility?

@CommonCurt: Yes, initially I was using mods from a Dell AT101W. As you pointed out, everything worked except the CapsLock and Spacebar. I got a suitable CapsLock from another board and I kept the stock spacebar. However, more recently, I was able to get a complete set of mods, including the Spacebar, from Matias. I like the look of black blanks for the mods and Spacebar, and I can install contrasting alpha and number keys from other keyboards if I want double-shots or PBT. One thing I liked about the Dell mods was the convex curvature on the bottom row to match the curvature of the Spacebar.
