SSKs and hhkbs collecting dust, still can't get my hands off the kish. Über crappy phone pic:

The thing is, that is my dream keyboard (maybe without the artisan caps because I'm not particularly interested in those). Now if I somehow achieve a miracle and get my hands on that, I'll have to do something original with it instead of just doing exactly what you did. CptBadAss has already done the hilariously sparkly purple thing.

I guess it doesn't matter. I'll likely never get one.

Is the spacebar broken on that?  Or is it intentionally that way?

Intentional.  Inverted would be upside down.  It's more of a 45 degree angle.  I guess some people like them that way.  I thought it was broken.  I guess it would function the same.

Correct.  It is intentional.  It works the same, but the difference is your thumbs hit the middle of the spacebar vs the sharp edge.  It is a comfort thing.

I just went from a Logitec k200 that I've used for about four years to a Novatouch and I have to say it's been a hugely pleasurable change. Makes typing a real pleasure; every button press seems important all of a sudden. I've got a Red-MX FC660m on the way from massdrop, that I ordered before the Novatouch, but I think I'm going to sell it unopened because this this is just too good.

I bought a cheapo QFR w/ MX Browns. Threw some GMK/OG Cherry Doublshots on it.

It's actually pretty nice to type on. A lot more solid of a board than I thought it was going to be.

IMHO, the only reason to knock CM QFRs is if you hate Cherry switches or want a keyboard for bragging rights.  QFRs were recommended to me as a great first mechanical keyboard/wonderful bang for the buck, and it was great advice.  We currently have two QFRs (hubby on MX blues and me with MX Browns and Stealth caps), and my only quibble with them is the keycaps are junk (even legends started wearing off within a few months) and I prefer backlit keyboards - and their backlit keyboard gets a lot of negative feedback for LEDs dying.

One big problem for them is that they use lower quality components and assembly methods, which makes them harder to work on.  It's hard to get a definitive source on this info, since it can be subjective, but this post might be helpful if you're curious for more info or why this would be important enough for me to mention.

I don't think the QFR is a bad board, I think it's great for the cost if you simply don't care about these points, but there is a good reason to knock them other than the reasons you mentioned.  ;)

Actually this is up for debate.

variable realforce 87u.. third day i'm using it.
i feel that variable, or 'ergonomic', is not for me.

maybe i'm just too 'trained' for/used to using uniform,
but it really doesn't feel good to me right now..
and it's not just the fact that it's variable -- 30g is just sooo light!
i think 45g (topre) is really the minimum that my fingers can truly enjoy.

i guess i'll give it at least a few more days,
but i might just end up trying to sell it :/

Realforce 87u 55g Anniversary edition.

I was worried ahead of time that the 55g would somehow break my fingers. Having been a gamer/coder/keyboard user for 20+ years, this almost feels light.

I only wish the usb cable was detachable. It would make for swapping out keyboards (or unplugging to lock it away) so much easier.

I've never tried 35g Topre but I have tried gateron clear and I see why you feel they are too light. However they are supposed to be on the mods to use with the pinky, I thought it would be nice. Never tried variant weight so far.

Oops, Snowdog, you're right, my typo—it is indeed a 1391401. Sheesh. I'd go back and change it, but it seems more useful to have such a clear example of human fallibility.  :?)

Dork also provided me with a set of custom keycaps for it that are pretty cool. It turns out they were produced for a medical company called Marquette. Litster did a topic here a few years ago about his board with the same caps, which also has the original customer labeling. It's especially fun how they used the entire tenkey for custom commands—those bright yellow caps give the ol' Model M a decidedly more modern look.

Oops, Snowdog, you're right, my typo—it is indeed a 1391401. Sheesh. I'd go back and change it, but it seems more useful to have such a clear example of human fallibility.  :?)

No no no silly!  I was looking up that model for some time before I even responded to your message.  I was wondering which Model M it actually was.  I transpose numbers all the time.  No worries.  It's like saying 0.7734 to people and only geeks know what that is anymore.  Everything is something else and N3W.

Yeah, but aren't there enough dang Model M p/n's without people going and typing some that don't exist?  :?D

I dunno, it's like typing in 1398011.  What the heck is that?  It is a part (usually in) white label Model M's.  Just the SDL controller PCB.  It's not really a whole keyboard yanno.

Been putting the 55g 87U through the paces these past couple days.  Going to try and do a dome swap this weekend.

Yikes, let's not even go there... IBM and their product numbers—it's like wandering into a mirror maze.  :?)

Good life choices.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

I'm supposed to be using this one, but it's so intimidating I haven't had the nerve to open the package yet.

750r with MX reds. The word "Tank" is appropriate. Makes my Filco feel and sound like a turd.

Here's a little typing test. Only retaught to touch type two months ago so not blazing speed
