Does anyone still use these keyboards?

I'm required to use these as part of my job. It really sucks. I can't even bring in my DT35 to replace it. And the one I was using was extremely dirty too. Digusting :(.

Hilarious how it sports that RSI injury warning, when pounding on a sh!tboard like that has to be the source of so many people's injuries...

I am planning the purchase of my first mechanical keyboard really soon and have no idea what I am doing. Am thinking about a Ducky Mini. I want something that would be a good first purchase and that is backlit but other than that am not sure what I should be looking for. The more I read on the boards the more confused I get . . . there are just so many options. I would welcome any suggestions for a good, relatively inexpensive "starter" keyboard. Thx.

I would recommend getting one without backlighting for a starter.  Backlighting is overrated IMO, and you're better off spending your money on a better-built board.

The reason I am looking particularly for backlighting is because I am making artisan keycaps and I want to be able to make some of my monsters eyes glow - LOL!

Well that's a good reason.

You mentioned a Ducky Shine Mini. Are you settled on a 60% layout? If so, a Pok3r is pretty popular.

Compac MX-11800 with MX Browns.

I would easily recommend this board to any new MK enthusiast who is looking for a good and cheap mechanical keyboard, Browns felt kinda weird in the beginning coming out from blues given that they felt more linear than tactile, but once I got used to them it became easier to feel the bump. And the keyboard take a little less space on the desk.

I really like those cases. Looks really good foundation to start a steampunk-esq board
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Trying out a KBParadise V80 with MX reds. It's currently missing an F6 key because as I was cleaning the caps, it fell down my garbage disposal.  :-\

Not a huge deal as I'd be replacing the caps on this anyway, probably with the Ivan PBT4 set I have ordered. Aside from that, it's a pretty solid board. I really like typing on reds even though I'm not as accurate on them as I am my 55g Realforce.

I realized recently that, despite having a whole collection of keyboards, I do most of my serious typing on my laptop's built-in keyboard. Even when I'm at home, and my desktop system, with a full sized monitor and everything, is right there. Like now.

I dunno, maybe I actually like scissor switches better, so long as they're not coming to pieces. Or maybe it's just that I get too annoyed by all of the problems my other keyboards have. Mechanicals, reliable? Hah!

I find my Macbook's keyboard pretty decent to use as well, so long as I have Keyclick running to give it some audio feedback.

My brother from another mother?

One day I realized that I was trying so hard to make my mechanicals feel and sound like rubberdomes / scissor switches.

The ultimate path to nirvana is DIY membrane sheets and chiclet/scissor keycaps.

Not sure currently. Could be that I just wind up subconsciously tending towards using the laptop just because none of my mechanicals have fared very well over time-- of the ones that still work, one seems to get more and more chatter-y over time, and the other has all kinds of glitches with keys or clusters of keys dropping out even when used over its native PS/2 (among other problems). Maybe when (perhaps with my luck, I should say "if") I'm back on something that's working at 100%, I'll find myself using it more often.

Then again, scissor switches don't have to feel bad. With the right domes, you get a definite tactile sense followed immediately by a soft landing. Admittedly, there aren't any scissor switch keyboards that I would consider buying for my desktop, but "feel" is at most a secondary reason for that.

Just starting out with a Majestouch 2 TKL...

Welcome to Geekhack!

That's a good solid board to start with.

What switches has it got?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Right now I'm using one of these:

I have/have had other keyboards with MX Blacks but nothing else feels like this keyboard. I removed the plastic sheet/splash guard & installed O-rings. I really like the way this keyboard feels.

Set aside my Model M to pull out a NIB Digital LK46W-A2 to see how it feels.

For a rubberdome it feels reasonable; firm key travel and landing without much noise.
It's kind of fun getting used to some of the key placements, in particular the LCtrl is beside the caps lock, and finding where PrtScr is: Alt+F18.
A new one to me is Alt+F19: toggles the arrow keys to scrolling in Excel.
The only BS I
want to hear is
from a Model M:

DOB: 04FEB87

SMK Blue: Chicony KB-5181; HyperX Aqua: HyperX Alloy Origins *Yet-to-rebuild: A 69 key C. P. Clare Foam & Foil assy *Rubber: Digital LK46W-A2; uSoft Natural Pro RT9401, Natural Multimedia 1.0A RT9470, Natural Ergonomic 4000 KU-0460; "Avid" Sejin SLKR2233; "Diamond Touch" Mitsubishi 6511-PB

i'd prefer a split keyboard but i do not have the space for it, matrix layout boards are interesting and are pretty good to game on (especially with stuff like starcraft or spammy MMORPGs)
