The ever elegant Datapoint Acer KB101A with caps from my DC-3014. Acer caps are pretty, but they aren't so pleasant to type on, at least not for me.

Just love the logo.

KB101 is a pretty keyboard, reminds me of the Model M.

What's wrong with the stock caps? Aren't they thick dye-sub PBT?

Well, the caps are very pretty and look a lot like the dyesubbed PBT you see on salmon Alps Dell AT101 boards, but it's actually ABS with some kind of printing method that no one is sure of. It's very similar in effect to dyesubbing and goes deep into the plastic. The thing I don't like about the caps is that they are relatively thin, especially considering Alps Electric caps are the thickest Alps caps available.

I also have an Acer 6011 which has white Alps and the exact same kind of caps. I really didn't like the feel and blamed it on the SKCM White switches, but after I got the KB101A, I realized it was the caps!

There's also the KB101AS which comes with doubleshot caps that I believe are made by Alps Electric. I'm just glad I had an ANSI set that'd fit. I put my Dell AT101's PBT caps onto my Leading Edge DC-3014 and the Dell originally had the DC-3014's caps, but the Dell AT101 ultimately ended up with the Acer KB101A caps and yep. :P

Here's the DC-3014:

Not as pretty as the KB101, but it has more of a practical design and it also has NKRO.

Funny how all the caps are switched around on your boards, and they all fit!

In other news, I'm starting to really lose interest in my formerly beloved Octagon v1. I'm not sure if it's the SA key caps, the feel compared to Alps, or what, but it's the board I type on the least these days.

I don't want to sell it since I had a special case made for both it and the Lightpad, but ahh... I don't know anymore!

I've always thought this board was absolutely gorgeous and beautiful sounding!!!

Really really jelly.

Finishing up a draft in Scrivener, so it's back to this ol' boy.

Oh, you mean the DC-3014? It certainly is a Korean classic, haha. It's definitely a very sleek board in its own right. It's got some simple but organic curves where the KB101A is all about angles and is a little embellished, haha.

Also, I agree on the note about the HHKB. It is simple but very classy.

Yeah, sorry, I should have specified. I just saw the photo and I had to respond to it :P

It really is a simple yet beautiful board. Something about the combination of WKL + that top bezel + that logo is just perfect :P Even the side cable ~

Ducky Shine 5 !

Welcome to Geekhack!

Which Ducky is that?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

So, I've really been using that KB101A for a week now, and while it's been fun, I decided to go back to one of my first ever Alps keyboards, my FAME TH-5539.

Hebrew caps that I don't want to shine, genuine blue Alps, a layout modified to ANSI, and a metal bottom. It's still my favorite Alps board, to be honest.

But with that bottom, how could it not be? :P

For some people the thock can be a little irritating, especially with heavy keycaps. I imagine the aluminum case adds a little reverb to the thock. I would probably do the same.

Away from my apartment at the moment, all I brought with me is my Pok3r with Clears. Got this recently, and coming from Blues and Browns thought the clears were mighty heavy. Didn't take long for me to get used to it though, and looking forward to returning to my apartment in a week or so and seeing how light Browns will feel in comparison, heh. Also still deciding if I want to do something about that blue LED that's essentially always on as I have some keys swapped around in my normal use case...

Sometimes imgur goes over capacity for one reason or another. Some hits and uploads will bring it to it's knees.
Most of the time it's just fine.

An AEK1 with Salmon alps I managed to snag from goodwill at work.

Black Unicomp 103 key Classic with a set of white caps with green text.

Love them both.  I will say, I think original AEK keyboards are super underrated.  I really want to get my hands on a good condition  board with orange Alps.

I'll try to post pics later.

Getting acquainted with my first mechanical keyboard: a WASD V2 with MX Clears:

Charcoal keys, blue modifiers, white legends using the Coda font, for those wondering.

I like it so far; after years on rubber domes and scissor switches I have to train myself to avoid bottoming out (and the subsequent "clack", no o-rings at the moment, maybe later).

I'm amazed you can bottom out on clears, when i had my MX Clears boards i could not bottom out unless doing so deliberately since the bottom out force i believe is around 100cn?  But you will get used to it fairly quickly with some usage.

Getting acquainted with my first mechanical keyboard: a WASD V2 with MX Clears:

Show Image

Charcoal keys, blue modifiers, white legends using the Coda font, for those wondering.

I like it so far; after years on rubber domes and scissor switches I have to train myself to avoid bottoming out (and the subsequent "clack", no o-rings at the moment, maybe later).

I'm amazed you can bottom out on clears, when i had my MX Clears boards i could not bottom out unless doing so deliberately since the bottom out force i believe is around 100cn?  But you will get used to it fairly quickly with some usage.

I bottom out my Clears fairly often but only because I use Greens at work.
Been thinking of taking my greens to class since everyone's chair squeaking will just drown them out anyway.

I bought o-rings anticipating that my co-workers would complain and I would have to use them but no one seemed to mind!  Sometimes people will remark that I'm making quite a ruckus in my office but usually only if I am typing something up like an email (or maybe a GH post or two) and they happen to be walking by.

This is the exact board that I am using right now as I wait for my dozen group buys ^ ^. I desoldered that constant LED. It was really annoying.

So, I've really been using that KB101A for a week now, and while it's been fun, I decided to go back to one of my first ever Alps keyboards, my FAME TH-5539.

Show Image

Hebrew caps that I don't want to shine, genuine blue Alps, a layout modified to ANSI, and a metal bottom. It's still my favorite Alps board, to be honest.

But with that bottom, how could it not be? :P

This is legitimately one of my favorite boards here. Love it every time i see it

QFS MX green JTK WoB with Electric Bluegaloo modifiers.

Aww man, thanks! When I saw this post before even noticing who you quoted, I was not expecting to see my board! I appreciate it! The board was definitely a lot of work, though that seems like forever ago now.

It's definitely my favorite vintage Alps board. Truly an early endgame in the vintage world  for me, haha.
