so i just got a Realforce R2 TKL. I know keycaps are rare but is there any outlet that sell keycaps that will fit the Realforce R2? I'm also really looking to get the Realforce Hiragana keycaps. Any suggestions on where to look?

kbdfans sells some one set, but its not great quality some say.

Get Novatouch sliders, swap and use any MX set you want. :thumb:

I present a pile of Japanese e-waste from China, or the JUKI FD-01R.
A few of you might be familiar with the FD-0100, the OEM Topre product from the 90s that Topre would eventually turn into the Realforce.
The FD-0100 is relatively mysterious but another variant with air travel reservation-specific keycaps was discovered years ago by sandy55 in Japan.
These data-entry keycaps are so gorgeous in my opinion, I love the incredibly busy look with the blue front-printing, and grey integrated numpad.
Despite its dismal condition I knew I had to grab it the moment I saw it.

It's had a hard end of its life :(

244077-5

It dates back to 1997, 4 years prior to the debut of the Realforce marque.

244079-6

After a gruelling 4 hour+ session mercilessly scrubbing every individual keycap by hand, they're clean!
I decided to throw them on an 86U with some supplementary 108UH-ANLG caps.

244089-7
244081-8
244083-9
244085-10
244087-11

You can see the staggering amount of use the integrated numpad has had.
The texture has significantly worn down, the legends are beginning to fade on 0, 2 and +, and they're mad shiny.

missed out on the HG buy, but went ahead and started getting ready for hAsHtAg evija season-

haven't popped the rev a sliders into hhkb yet, but aside from having less surface area on the bottom of the slider (you can see the ring overhang in the pic), they appear to be the same as a stock slider (so more like the hhkb type-s slider than a realforce). the rev a foam ring is roughly 1mm wider than the rev b ring though (left is a messed up rev b, right is rev a)-

Type S sliders have the bit in the middle thinned out like realforce silent (though maybe there is a slight difference)- at least, the Hybrid BT Type S do. I thought that pro2 typeS also had the modified type-S slider as well but I've never seen the sliders in person.

yeap you're right (i've never owned hhkb type-s sliders in any capacity). the hhkb type-s slider is closer to the normal purple slider, it's just its shortened legs aren't as short as the purple slider legs (and i'm assuming this is where the supposed loss of key travel comes in).

this rev a slider seems more akin to applying a hypersphere or deskey #4 (?) to a stock slider... and this was really perplexing me because a) comparing realforce against realforce, it seemed to be more effective at silencing than the rev b (standard) purple slider, and b) while simultaneously it didn't feel like key travel was being stunted (like it was coming up "short" of the resting position) at all.

welp, it turns out the OG 1u purple slider housings are actually taller than the stock housings (similar to the silenced realforce 2.25u housings) to compensate for the slider ring-

evija season just got a hell of a lot more interesting because i believe the implication here is that you can pop even thicker rings on the rev b purple sliders and not experience stunted key travel. so something like a rev a housing + rev b slider + rev b ring (or rev a if better) + keyclack v2 would be possible so that you have noise suppression on both the slider and the slider housing without really experiencing a loss in upstroke position (might be noticeable if you fully bottom out though?).

i don't have any excess rev b sliders sitting around, so i'll have to wait until this weekend to really be able to test stuff out (basically compare stock slider + housing against the above config in terms of key height, travel distance, and noise).

will post more info later, but just following up to confirm that this is a thing. you can use this config (or a second foam ring instead of a keyclack v2), and it not affect key travel at all. i have some deskey 3/5 rings coming in that i'll mess around with and make some UlTiMAtE ToPRe SiLenCiNg thread later.

on another note, anyone know of any topre keyboards that contain "standard" ANSI legend keycaps that are in the carmine-ish color (found on the EDIUS keyboards, a couple keys on the axess, and on the mythical aa-0101)? the color is absolute heat and topre needs to bring it back.

edit - replaced attachment with flickr image (imgur and such were stripping a lot of the red color out and making it more brown), and added in the standard "power" red color for comparison-

bah, i figured as much, but i definitely appreciate you confirming it. i bought an edius3 to get a look at the lighter wine color (needed to figure out how deep i really wanted to go to buy one of those wasd sets huehuehue), but this color really is something else. i'll have to get the ol' lightbox out to capture a pic of it for the archives.

and it's honestly amazing how creative they used to be with their overall keycap colors, sublegend colors, and even the front legend colors... given how uninspired it all seems now (aside from that monstrosity that is the hello kitty keyboard).

for sure, love that wine colour - what i like about topre is that there's always potential to discover new stuff, so i hope someone finds more of those caps on some wacky oem board at some point! would be cool to get a topre colour wheel going or something too, for documentation's sake - even the realforce logo keycaps come in like a dozen different shades

Think this is about as far as I can take this one (would replace WASD with a "Dusty Carmine" set in the same color as the BS and restore BS to the Anni' blue, but I'm going to be too picky on that one so eh)-

Stepped-Sorbothane Lining (5 steps; noise/vibration reduction + case-flex stability)
Poron Urethane Top Layer (noise reduction + keycap stabilization)

Gosh, seeing this thread reminds me that I have a number of Topre keyboards that I should start rotating. I'm using a Topre RealForce 103UB 55G on my main rig, love that heavier 55G! Also have two CM Novatouch TKL's, two HHKB's, a Leopold FC66C and a Topre Type Heaven. Some with 3rd party keycaps, while remaining keyboards are with stock keycaps. There was a time I'd go nuts and buy 2-3 keyboards a month....

Recently got another Topre (86U in white at the forefront, 10th anniversary edition in the back). I didn't notice when purchasing but it has a swapped tilde and escape key.

Confess I didn't know any Topre models had this 'layout'.. Played with the dip switches but they're just the standard 4 dips. It doesn't bother me, but is there some way to swap the two keys that I don't know about?

They don't - when using it are the keys actually swapped, or is it just the keycaps? I'd be very surprised if the actual keys are swapped.

FWIW the 86u I had was standard Esc top left, Tilde below it.

No, keys are swapped it's not just the caps. It led me to a bit of a search down this mystery and there's a copy on ebay with exactly the same configuration (it also has the same S/N: 90101028A). This is despite the box on both the ebay copy and mine showing the esc and tilde in the common places.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/REALFORCE-SE0500-86U-English-keyboard-/392896370600?nma=true&si=u5p3IAdmnveaqZqS6yfW3y%252Fgk6k%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Edit: My 86U's PCB sticker for good measure, date of manufacture 13 Jan 2009 - sub model? SE 0501

Well **** that's pretty interesting, I've been digging through google images and can't find any in the same layout.

Perhaps one of the topre experts can shed some light (btctopre, subcat)?

hmm... i had a white/beige 86u once, and it definitely did not come in that layout.

it looks like the one on ebay is the same one that sold on mercari (listing just didn't get removed from ebay yet). seller mentions no remapping of the keys in that listing, i don't see any sort of usb-to-usb remapping device on the cable, and there's no dip switch on that model to swap esc/tilde (nor have i ever seen such a thing on a topre keyboard), so not sure what is going on.

when you disassembled the board, were there any wires running in between the keys on the pcb (to create a sort of hard-wired remap)? i've only seen that once ever before on topre, but it makes me believe that it's possible.

Mystery solved - when I took the PCB out I couldn't even see the wire it was so thin, then rushed to make some dinner for the little one. What a strange mod... but I don't hate it. I don't program so I never use tilde.
