I still use my F122 but at home where I mostly game and browse so my keyboard is not centered and let's me use my mouse with a normal position.

A - looks good.
B - What wasn't working with Toms controller?
It was a dark grey basecoat, some custom metallic flake I picked out and a matte clearcoat. It's really cool how the grey changes with the angle you look at it. as always the picture does not do it justice. I got it painted at the same place that CPTbadass got his kishsaver painted and Mkawa is getting the smallfry titanium painted. Unlike what CPTbadass said, the pricing was really good! I think he's just a cheapskate. :p
B - What wasn't working with Toms controller?
I forget exactly what, but there was some discussion about it on the DT thread if I recall correctly. Since programming the DPH is like impossible I might switch back.
I just weighed things.
Interestingly enough my heaviest beamspring is my displaywriter with a plastic case: 5300g
I also have a fullsize 3278 KB that weighs 4700g
The 107 key weighs in at 4600g
So you can see it's on the order of a beamspring, the 100g difference is very hard to notice.
I didn't weigh my TKL 3278 beamspring but i'm sure it's lighter than my 107-key.
Here's a model M that I'm shipping off to Canada for a very nice GHer there. This was the board I used to write my bolt mod guide

Oooh! ANSI!
Was this ANSI originally? All its bigger cousins seem to be ISO out of the factory.
So, out of curiosity, if one wanted to mod a Model F to, say, the HHKB layout, you would just need to move around stabilisers and springs so you have enough keys? It wouldn't require doing any destructive/irreversible modifications?
Well you'd need a kishsaver with a split backspace. I think that you can convert a normal kish but I'm not totally sure if the short shift is possible. This is what it'd look like. Photo cred goes to Snoopy.

Split backspace is easy on a kishsaver (I believe they were this way stock), the split right shift is tricky. You can definitely split it, and mine came stock split. The catch is that rather than the 2.75 key being split to 1.75 | 1, it's split to 1 | 1.75, which puts the 1u fn right next to /? and the shift on the edge of the case (or you have a 1u shift in proper HHKB position and 1.75u fn). Hope that makes sense. I can take pics later if it helps. :)
But in general, changing the layout on the kishsaver is crazy easy. You literally just move the spring/hammer assemblies around. Every barrel position in the plate has contacts on the PCB under it, even if the layout didn't have a key there (if that barrel was a stabilizer insert). Then it's just a matter of programming, which is also easy with xwhatsit's controller. Not sure if that makes any more sense than Touch_It's explanation, but again I can take pics if need be. :thumb:

What are you going to do with it?
Yeah it does suck. Everyone I've spoken to doesn't have replacements. Phosphorglow wasn't sure if he had any replacements. Clickykeyboards said no, and Unicomp said buy a full set of our caps.
It could be an excuse to buy some of those neato APL keycaps from Unicomp though?
It's lame the one you got from her has a broken case Rowdy (I think that was you, anyway.). Did she give you a bit of a discount for that?
The APL set looks pretty good.

I finally have an SSK ^-^
Now I just need to clean it... :rolleyes:
What are you waiting for? I'd like to know if it is actually working. Did you get an SDL cable with it or have one handy to find out? Oh and just using dish soap with oxyclean works pretty good. Be sure the keys are dry when you put them back on!!!
I can't wait to see it when it's sparkling! Great catch Hoff!
I got mine from Cindy, and it works. I plugged it in and tested all of the keys. She also includes a cable with every SSK. It's really a steal for $75 if you ask me.
I believe that all keycaps included is also guaranteed :)
A full set is guaranteed, but not the exact caps for the board. Missing caps are replaced with Model M caps. My SSK came missing the SSK I and + keys, so I don't have the sublegends. It looks strange on the I key. Unicomp said they can make a replacement, but I have to buy a full set of caps.. and I don't know how good their quality is going to be.
I got a replacement set from Unicomp for SSK, but I only use the alpha/numeric keys. The rest are from other model M/F keyboard. I noticed a difference in the printing when the set first arrived but since using them for a few months now they just seem normal. The embedded number pad looks quite good actually, it is a light grey (if I had a good camera I would take some comparison photos but I don't so I could only bring potatoes to the party).
I think I know the light grey you're talking about, my stock SSK keys have a light grey embedded numpad too. So the printing is reasonably sharp? Are there any crooked prints? I have a cap from them that says GEEK HACK but both words are tilted at an angle. .-.
Thanks for your help! I feel better about a Unicomp set. How well do the alphas match the old alphas? I'd like to maybe keep it all original and just use the I/5 key with the originals. Would it look off?

Been trying to get this to post for a while now. I took some comparison shots, on the left is the original and on the right is the Unicomp key. I personally would not mix Unicomp keys with my originals as it is really noticeable. I think the printing is pretty good they are just different.

Drill the 3 holes. Smooth the burrs and put the LED Overlay in place.

It's a pretty cool keyboard CPT. I did find a video of someone converting one too. I believe that influenced the person to modify their Wildcats' keyboard.
Cross Post:
They actually put the regular legends on it. Took off the blue keys and put the regular keys on it, put a regular Model M overlay for the LED's, and put an IBM logo where the Wildcats logo was. I believe it was a "Unicomp Special" for a low price and they just did that. It went back to the Pearl/Pebble.
I guess they didn't like the Wildcats? I don't know why.
I think they were influenced by this YouTube video, but I think they had a regular M for the keycaps. They took ALL the blue keycaps off. Just made it Pearl/Pebble. Maybe they did it before or around the same time.
I couldn't PM you to give you that link.
Anyway, there is something more in the works going on....

Time to finally show off my 'finished' model M.
In early March this year, I bought a Model M from Jixr on the cheap.

The keyboard was bolt modded, had a wonky membrane, and no cable. I did a few mods to it.
I dyed the caps aqua colored. I oriented the caps in the same direction in the bath, and that gave them a nice gradient.

I removed the old connector and added a Teensy for USB capabilities. I actually went through a few Teensys in the process. I had a Teensy 2.0, but while soldering it I damaged one of the resistors/capacitors and the socket. I did some work on it with the Teensy 2.0+, but I am going to use that for another project. I bought a Teensy LC, but the ARM processor was giving me ****. So I finally went with another 2.0.
I also desoldered all of the old crappy green LEDS and resistors on the breakout board. I put in their place some bright blue LEDs and appropriate resistors for them.
So here we go:

I'm pretty proud of the usb connector. I took the old DIN socket and ripped it all to hell with my Dremel. I made little slots so the teensy board would slide in and super glued it to that spot. I filled in the open area with epoxy clay so it looks fairly clean.

Makin' me miss my BS Nightowl :'(
Great looking board, always wanted a set of OG APL caps, but I don't think I'm willing to pay the premium for them.
Whoa, Rowdy, Lexmark made a SSK? What planet have I been on?
Of course the big question is - does anyone still use APL, and would they find such a keyboard useful?
Naah. It just looks cool. Any time you can get keys with mysterious-looking secondary legends, you shouldn't hesitate. Things like that can even give meaning to a life that otherwise doesn't have much... Whenever I'm feeling insignificant, I plug in the swell GE Marquette Model M that I got from Dorkvader:

:eek: Wow, love those legends.
"Pull-back" -> "Wave", instructions from Her Majesty's PC.

That is a very nice keyboard :)
I wonder if there is a catalog of all Model M keycap sets that IBM made. it would be a large volume.

Just thought I'd mention that an M with this key set has just appeared here on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNICOMP-Model-M-Keyboard-2003809-003-REV-C-/311463594496) for $80 or Make Offer w/free shipping:

Unlike mine, this board was actually used with these keys, as its label shows it was made for GE Medical Systems. It also has a red "Emerg" cap at F12. ("Help! The patient I'm testing is singing a Neil Diamond tune!")
It also has no logos. I thought I'd seen one with a GE Med. Sys. logo, but I may be imagining it. Or this one may have had one and it's been removed.
In the interest of full disclosure, the original (pre-GE) Marquette boards have a Marquette logo at the upper left, a surface-mounted badge in the upper right with tech-support phone numbers, and say "Manufactured for Marquette Medical Systems" on the back. So purists may want to hold out for one of those. Still, it's an unusually vivid (and fun, I think) custom cap set on any board.
And yes, I'd normally post this in Great Finds, but we hadn't already been discussing it there.

and you're only gonna post the one?
It's just the one I have out and am using right now.
Edit: uploading now
I left some original keycaps on - Numpad, F1 - F10 and others. But all alphanumerics are Unicomp-printed, and yes, some of them also side-printed.
Yeah, you can tell from the font that those numpad keycaps came from an AT or PC/XT model F.
Unicomp did a really good job there!

what's the name of the middle board?
Here's a picture of my highly customized Frankenboard.
It's got 10 distinct modifier keys (including a working APL key).
My favorite custom key isn't shown in this picture.
The top right key on the NumPad now says "Quindar PTT" (for Push-To-Talk).
When depressed, it un-mutes my Mic and plays the NASA Quindar in-tone (2525 Hz for 250 ms).
When released, it mutes my mic and plays the Quindar out-tone (2475 Hz for 250 ms).
Every web meeting feels like Mission Control:
"[In-tone] Mission Control, you're in the mud. Try switching S band to Omni Bravo. Over. [Out-tone]"
"[In-tone] Roger that, Houston. I've got you 5x5. You're in the pipe. Over. [Out-tone]"

Long time lurker here but I haven't posted much, here's what I got:
A 42H1292 with the guts of a 1391401: The case of the 1391401 was in bad shape with cracks and large chunks missing, and the 42H1292 sucked to type on. It was really inconsistent and some keys didn't click until they were bottomed out, no rivets were missing surprisingly. Anyway, I combined them and it worked nicely, the controller is just stuffed in there and I had to move the LED strip, but I'm happier with it than I was with the two boards the way they were.

Went out to get the mail, and on my way back found something shocking in our overflowing trash bin.
(Attachment Link)
Was rather shocked. Testing has so far confirmed all but the Pause key are working flawlessly--the Pause key seems to blink when I test it. Haven't been able to test the F keys though. All of the keys are working, although the space bar seems a bit stiff. Whoever owned this last removed the space bar but didn't reattach the stabilizer when they put it back. That's been fixed now.

This is a bit of a strange one. Full thread on DT here: https://deskthority.net/photos-f62/ibm-model-m-1386303-first-keyboard-from-my-big-find-t15992.html
but TL;DR a 1996 lexmark reproduction of the first model of Enhanced Keyboard ever made. In absolutely pristine condition, no broken rivets, all keycaps complete, etc.
You should find a 1989 Model M Taylor.

bought the 5576-003 japanese ssk recently from ramnes (thanks man!). really really love the Brother Buckling Spring on it. the feel is right between an M and F - significantly crisper than the M but not as loud as the F. it also has individual BS switches unlike the M which I guess should make repairs easier except I dunno how I'd ever find replacement switches:

I've done a far more elaborate shoot where I got a picture of all of my current machines. I made this post on Reddit, but I feel like it belongs here as well:
[attachimg=1]
This is my current Battlefleet:
I will admit first off that I shamelessly stole this idea from SharktasticA who posted a similar Battlefleet, and who I’m in awe of all the same. He’s a good guy, I could never dislike someone who similarly has such an affinity for IBM keyboards.
That said, here is my own personal battlefleet, the numbers have swelled in the recent months thanks to having a new job, and extra income to blow on keyboards. (It was a fun little distraction, then a hobby, and now an obsession.) I’ll be giving a little history on how I acquired each and my short opinion on them, I’ll be going in order from left to right, top to bottom.
I’ve got a huge version of this picture in every megapixel that was used to create it, if there is any interest, I’ll find a way to upload it somewhere to share it. (If anyone knows of a good way to share 300 MB pictures, please tell me.)
But I do gotta give credit to the OG Battlefleet by SharktasticA, who has posted here in this thread.
Here we go!
Individual hi-res and story of each here:
1. The Flagship of the fleet, my IBM F122 “Battleship”, this keyboard is what is currently being used to type out this entire comment. I got it as my First IBM keyboard, but my fourth Buckling springs keyboard. (Two Unicomps and a Model F were first) Chyrosran22 who frequents these keyboard subs, waxes poetic about this keyboard, and honestly I think he’s right. It’s got the most satisfying click, and is built tougher than almost anything. (Almost we’ll get to that later) It’s huge, it eats up my desk, It’s one of my two daily drivers. I love giant keyboards and this scratches every conceivable itch for me.
IBM F122:
[attachimg=2]
2. My IBM Blue Switch 3178, this was a surprise find on Ebay, not listed under a standard name. I picked it up for cheap, and then sent out for a converter from Hong Kong, which works a treat. It does have it’s Solenoid still, and it works very well. I love this keyboard feel, as it’s an F like my 122, I love how the Blue Switch works as caps lock on it, I never cease getting a chuckle pointing that out to people.
IBM Blue Switch 3178:
[attachimg=3]
3. My IBM Model M 7 Series, It’s a rubber dome. These are too loud for my Office, so this is the one I take there. It’s home with me right now for a cleaning, which is just went though. It’ll be going back shortly. Its feel is about the best rubber dome I’ve ever tried, but I’ve also never typed on a Topre. So that may change in the future.
IBM Model M 7 Series:
[attachimg=4]
4. My IBM Model M Silver Badge, this is my daily driver on my Mac, it gets the best keycaps, and the most cleanings, I love it. It didn’t come with the APL keycaps, I found them on Ebay from a Goodwill, surprising find, and I love the character it gives it. I also stole it’s Numpad keys from another Model M I have. It’s heavy, it’s thocky, I love it to pieces.
IBM Model M Silver Badge with OG APL Keys:
[attachimg=5]
5. My IBM Model F 5155 Keyboard, I personally pulled it off the carcass of a very dead and destroyed 5155, which had been largely torn apart, except miraculously this keyboard, which while very dirty at first, cleaned up well, and as far as I can tell works. I plan on getting an Orihalcon Soarer’s converter for it, an internal one so that I can put a nice new USB cord on it. This one is a project, not quite done.
IBM Model F 5155:
[attachimg=6]
6. My IBM Model F AT, a cool deal I got on /r/Mechmarket, I pull it out from time to time, and give it a good go. It works flawlessly, and I love its huge enter key. I plan on setting up a new station for a rack of servers, and it’s currently earmarked to be the board that I use for that. I love it’s black cord, I loved it so much that whenever possible I replaced the SDL’s of the rest of my keyboards with IBM replacements that have the black cord. I’m told that some models F and M will not accept this cord, but I’ve not found that to be the case as of yet, my Soarers converters don’t seem to mind at all.
IBM Model F AT:
[attachimg=7]
7. My IBM Model F 5291 “Bigfoot” This was actually the first IBM keyboard I ever bought, brand new in box, it’s a treat, and I love it to pieces. It’s conversion was talked about on the Geekhack forums, and the instructions for it weren’t particularly clear, so I wrote up a set of instructions on how to do it more clearly and with pictures. I always smile looking at the guy, because even though I don’t use it much, it really got me more into the hobby, fixing and repairing, it’s where it all began.
IBM Model F 5291 Bigfoot:
[attachimg=8]
8. My IBM Model F XT, I found this guy at a yard sale and the user had no idea what it was for and from. I couldn’t hand over the money for it fast enough, being careful not to show too much interest. It’s stabilizer bar is out, I plan on doing the trick to get it back in, but otherwise it sits on the shelf. It’s in great condition, but has a pink streak on it, I have literally no idea what it is, and I’ve been trying cleaners to remove it for months. Any ideas would be appreciated. Lysol wipes did get some of it to come off though.
IBM Model F XT:
[attachimg=9]
9. My IBM Model M SSK, This was listed on Ebay as a generic keyboard, it lost it’s badge, and has no sticker. It has the most generic set of SSK keys ever made, so I have no idea what generation it is from. I bought a replacement badgge, got it a black cord, and decided to go with a colored theme for it with caps from Unicomp. I want to do this more, as Unicomp is happy to produce any sort of crazy color scheme and anything on the keys and not very expensively. I’m very happy with how this one came out.
IBM Model M SSK:
[attachimg=10]
10. My IBM Model F 4704, The newest addition to the fleet from Ebay, It’s got some issues, all of it’s keys won’t actuate, but it largely works, and is converted with an internal Xwhatsit controller. It’s the heaviest keyboard I’ve ever seen and felt in my life, it’s case is made of solid zinc, and apparently it was for Bank teller computers. I’m planning on ordering quite a few custom caps from Unicomp for it with different functions like: Copy, Cut, Paste, and Macro1-10 so I can have it do a lot. If it works out, it may become a daily driver for me, if it doesn’t break my desk down.
IBM Model F 4704:
[attachimg=11]
11. My IBM Model M, this one was a cool deal from a friend who was selling it off. It was cheap and has always worked very well, I recently deep cleaned it, hydrosonically cleaned the caps, and got an Orihalcon Soarer’s converter for it. I plan on gifting it to a co-worker who transferred in, and I’m in awe of. The guy is just one of the most motivated IT’s I’ve ever seen, and he doesn’t know much, but he just tears up work. I want to thank him, since he has possibly the worst keyboard in history at home, and I think this will suffice. I think he’ll love using the Soarers with it.
IBM Model M:
[attachimg=12]
12. My Model M Terminal variant, I bought it solely to steal keys off of, but I wound up getting attached, it’s got a short cord, strange numpad, and is just really solid like Number 4 on the list. I can’t hate it. I got it on Ebay for a steal.
IBM Model M Terminal Variant:
[attachimg=13]
13. My IBM 5251 Beamspring, I acquired it on /r/Mechmarket and it’s just a beast. I love it to shreds, the previous owner converted it via Xwhatsit, and did TONS of work to ensure it was working beautifully before he shipped it. I can’t thank him enough, and hope to pay him back for the labor in addition to just selling it to me. It’s got a solenoid in it, one of the loudest I’ve ever heard in a keyboard, and it’s a very light touch. It’s surprisingly heavy, and has a large footprint, it’s also very very tall. It’s error-reset key won’t actuate, and is an ongoing project for me. I brought it into work once, and in-between laughing, I was busy making it sound like a machine gun. One of my crown jewels.
IBM 5251 Beamspring:
[attachimg=14]
14. My IBM Model M Industrial Variant, This guy is one of my babies. It’s story starts before I bought it: I wanted a set of APL keycaps from Unicomp, Solid white, with the APL legends in green. They happily did it for me, and they sat around for a time. I found this keyboard up on Ebay in Canada, listed improperly, and it was a total accident. I never clicked a buy button faster as it was WAYYY below standard pricing for it. Once I got it, I put the APL set on it, and fell in love. I got a green Panic button to help bring out the green, and the honeymoon is still going on. I use it with my work laptop, and it travels around the house as needed for different computers. I clean it often, that white will stay white!
IBM Model M Industrial Variant:
[attachimg=15]
15. My Unicomp Model M5-2, This was my first Buckling Spring keyboard I used in my adult life. I used a Model M when I was really tiny, and have pictures of that, but I didn’t remember. Typing on this was like coming home. I had heard of Unicomp for years and that they made a really good keyboard, and ordering it really convinced me of that. It changed everything for me. I doted on it, bought new keys for it, and used it everywhere, including getting it kicked out of my office for it’s loudness. It was my second Mechanical Keyboard, my first being a Ducky Shine 3 yellow that I still love, but this was my first real “Catastrophically Buckling Compression Column Switch and Actuator” keyboard I owned. I use it a little less nowadays, but it still moves around my house from computer to computer getting use, and still works well. It had a few of the standard Unicomp issues: Random mushy keys, which just required a re-seating of the keycap to fix, and an ill fitting right shift key. I asked Unicomp about the shift and they sent a new one overnight, which was surprising, and made me a lifelong customer. I’ve only had one issue with them other than this. Compared to my Model M’s and F’s, it’s right in there, and I don’t feel a huge different in quality, it is cheaper lighter plastic, but it’s still miles better than almost anything that comes with a computer nowadays, and it still clicks like it means it.
Unicomp Model M5-2:
[attachimg=16]
16. My Maxiswitch, for Lexmark, for IBM Model M13, I posted pics of this guy before, but now it has a replacement trackdot from Unicomp. It’s in great shape, and works perfectly. This was a surprise ebay purchase, where I spent more than I should of. I wish that its right shift had more of the lettering still on it, but it’s just a beauty, I look at it often, and actually wish to put it in a display case in time. It types wonderfully, and just sticks out to me. I really wish they made more of those black badges, they look so good.
Maxiswitch IBM Model M13:
[attachimg=17]
Honorable Mention: My Unicomp M122, So My second keyboard I ever bought was a Unicomp M122, which I loved to pieces and was one of my daily drivers, It’s USB controller recently fried, I activated my warranty with it through Unicomp who are currently taking care of it. I’m sad to not have it at the moment, but it flew too close to the sun. It was my second Unicomp, and saw a ton of use, I love it’s feel, and thought it’s construction was really good. I actually at first when I saw it, never thought I’d be interested in a board like it, but upon buying it fell in love. It combined with Chyrosran22’s Youtube videos convinced me to buy a Model F122, and together they are my two most used keyboards.
Here's the set of APL keycaps I got for my Silver badge M, it was a cool experience opening these up to, since they seemed to have never been used. It gave a very clean new look to my keyboard.

IBM Model M Soft Touch:
[attachimg=1]
My IBM Model M Soft Touch is a keyboard I got in the past three weeks, which I ordered from a guy in Texas. It's a very strange Model M for me, and will probably go on my desk at work because it's so quiet. It's also kind of mushy, but because it's so quiet and Buckling spring, it's hard for me to say no. Notably it's quieter in typing than my Model M Rubber Dome.
IBM Model M 0th Generation 1388032:
[attachimg=2]
My new IBM Model M, Black Square Badge came in a few days back, and after a vigorous cleaning is next to my 5251 my crown jewel of my collection. It's a very interesting keyboard I got through a friend of a friend who was selling it on the East coast, When I got it it's badge was on the ground in my box, which scared the crap outta me, I glued it on carefully, and cleaned everything to pieces, and now it's just amazing to me I own one. I never honestly thought I'd get my hands on one. It is very heavy for a Model M, and has a surprisingly lighter and pingier sound, and I'm not sure if it's because the mechanism is more like a Model F, or if the heavier case is giving the illusion of that feel. It works perfectly on a Soarers converter, but I'm honestly just scared to use it much, so I've only typed on it a little bit, and have otherwise kept it out for viewing.
Quick restoration of my rustmeister 5251 done; it's only been four years in the making.

I finally had some time to play with the Xwhatsit **** and get this thing going. Holy smokes. I thought there wasn't a better feeling keyboard than the XT. I was wrong. This is everything the XT was and more.
And, as some of you guys may know, I have always had 2 issues with the Models F: the layout and the sound. Well, this thing doesn't help with the sound, but the layout is basically the same as a Model M the way I have it set up. It's arguably even better, since it has room for that Windows key.
This is it boys. I've hit the peak and there's nowhere to go but down.
Confirmed: I'm going to need a bigger desk.
100% agree, they're really something to type on.
I highly recommend trying the floss mod (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=9761.0) on it if you haven't, it's very easy to try on a few switches at a time, and easy to remove afterwards if you don't like it. Can also use paracord core if you can't find the proper type of floss.
