[IC] Geekhack 6th Anniversary Custom Engraved Cherry MX Keychains

Geekhack is reaching it's 6th anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than with some custom limited run merchandise.

This interest check is to gauge if members would be interested in a custom engraved Cherry MX keychain. Blue only, however switch top will be removable and then you can mod the switch, bottom would be glued.

The keychain will be made from three (maybe two) layers of acrylic, of thickness: 1.5mm, 3.5mm, 4mm  (or 5mm and 4mm) from top to bottom.

Color scheme and design will look like this:






Your username or text of choice\image will be engraved on the front, and "6" on the back. Each member will only be allowed to buy one.

Price would be somewhere between $1-$2, with $3 shipping, and then the usual paypal fees and optional $1 to GH funds.

The design is _not_ set in stone and I am open to ideas, but the theme is the 6th Anniversary, and no you may not have more than one.

Although I will do a GB for "similar" custom engraved keychains much later.

Same issue. If we're really going to be putting this in our pockets and what not, any white will get dirty fast from daily usage.

i think that a limit of 2 should be ok and reasonable (if OP is ok with that), since I would have one with my keys and one on my desk to play around with.

Main reason for me is to keep the GB simple and cost low.  In addition I would think it would shorten the lead time as well.

Good point.  It'd be cool to have a super unique cap that's only available through this, but you're right timing is an issue.

Normally I prefer to have larger runs of things (I'm looking at you LZ-S) but for something like this, it's cool. It's exactly like when companies do like limited edition whatever when they celebrate their milestones.

Yes, it is going to be like sports cars, although the model is same, this cosmetic variant will be of limited numbers.

I got a prototype done today, however the laser cutter destroyed it somehow by glowing some hot gas of the cut acrylic and making wired heat patterns 

However it did allow me to see if everything fit, and made sense.

I couldn't get engraving done as that wasn't working, however I did get it laser marked, and I have to say, to certain extent I like it better for the given small design, atleast for the name.

I'll post comparison pictures.

What it means, is it will cost $200 for production of 100 units, thus if we get 50 orders it would be $4 each, and the remaining 50 will got to the geekhack store (Didn't mention that earlier, oops), obviously they won't be personalized but will have the limited run color combination and the 6 at the back.

I made a mistake, pricing would not be calculated until we know the numbers, it would be following this simple formula, $250per 100 orders. So if we have 50 orders it would be $5, shipping will $3, and no other charges.

The increase in $50 from my previous post is because of the increased USD-INR rate which is affecting the market now as old stocks of materials are being replenished, I've removed the PayPal fees as extra to compensate for price increase.

So, these are the pics, these are not the prototypes, only reason I got them was to get size idea and fitting of the switch.

I think it is best to get the names etched and not marked (Half-cut/crevice) as I had thought.



The laser cutter warped the acrylic on this one and I ran out of chloroform for welding so had to make do with cyanoacrylate glue.
