Next hand should be a brofist.
That way I can have all the fisting and hand jobs.
I'm pretty sure those are good things. I'm half French so please excuse my bad English.

More packages being mailed out this week.  R3 will start before R2 finishes getting shipped out.  This is only because of members who are asking for alterations to their order and my inability to wait to move on with these projects and refine the techniques.

so minor derail, but tj, you and i were talking the other night about taking resins, a single community vacuum or pressure pot and degassing these thermosets then sending them out like clay, unset in big chunks or small plastic containers. it makes no sense for literally everyone to have a bunch of vacuum and pressure equipment; it's expensive, it's dangerous, and it's only justifiable if you're moving volumes of caps.

binge, can you point me to the pots you were looking at and both you and tj, to the resins so i can get a good idea of what preparation is required to produce a thermoset block that is low-flaw bulk material and can be used for casting, mold making, etc?

I am sorry but you lost me here. what do you mean by unset? can resin really be partially cured and stored?

I'm a little fuzzy on those details myself... mailing cured urethane plastics would mean they are chemically inert.  When mailing the liquid does require a bit of special packaging and labels.

I would be worried about one person taking on the orders of various GHers because they would be liable for the use of the material and complications with defects.

I am trying to understand how this would work. you would still have to mix the resin and hardener and would still need a pressure pot to remove the bubbles.
the shaking action during shipping would cause more bubbles to occur in the product and it would need to be put in a pressure pot after pouring into a mold.
and... to make a mold that has a smooth finish instead of a matte finish you still... need a pressure pot.

I think the idea is more of a crowd accessible work force of people who will make mold/casts for geekhack.

When he says thermoplastics I believe he also means the possibility of ABS etc.  That's much different than what we've been doing up to this point Domo.

between the two of us we can pretty much handle the east and west coasts :p  possibly getting to use the machines we acquire in order to assist in various projects.

If my sister's husband ever gets into computer aided injection molding we might even have some access to abs castings.

you can ship the uncured degassed thermosets under vacuum in a bag or hard container if it is filled under vacuum. it isn't inert, but as long as it's not flammable it is shippable.

you may be right that everyone has to have a pressure pot anyway because when you attempt the molding you have to take it out of vacuum at some point.

as far as injection molding thermoplastics is concerned, the limiter there is, as usual, tooling. i have been working pretty hard to make machining accessible and there is a long term plan that will allow me to do small scale machining for low pressure mold tooling, but serious mold tooling has to be done at a large gb level. it makes some sense because precise tooling is so expensive that it's only more efficient than positive or negative prototyping and low volume production machines (mills, lathes, grinders, straight up filing, ffm, FDM, etc.) if your volume is very very large.

and yes, there is community mold-making already. abs molds for keycap sized parts are very very possible to build with FFM printers, hand tools and a few solvents.

oh one more thing. partial curing IS actually possible with some resins. BUT it's a pretty special property, so i don't know how accessible these kinds of setting polymers are.

crystal clear 200 is very very temperamental. it has a 16 hour cure time and I post cured it for 1 hour afterwards then let it cool for another hour before demolding.
I would pick a much faster resin next time like poly-optic 1410
http://polytek.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=257

edit: 1410 is also a much harder resin when finished

for others that have no idea what we are saying ....

I plan to do caps in clear, solid colors and black

clear = smooth-on crystal clear 200 = 80D 16 hour cure time + 4-6 hour post cure @ 150F + 1 hour cooldown then demold

clear = poly-optic 1410 = 80D 2 hour cure time  + 4-6 hour post cure @ 150F + 1 hour cooldown then demold

solids = smooth-on 325 = 72D = 10 minute cure time + 4-6 hour post cure @ 150F + 1 hour cooldown then demold

black = smooth-on onyx fast = 80D =  15 minute cure time + 4-6 hour post cure @ 250F + 1 hour cooldown then demold

DO NOT POST CURE IN YOUR KITCHEN OVEN!!!
toxic fumes from the resin can get you and your family very ill.
use a toaster oven and wrap your mold & casting in foil first.

edit: 70D/72D/80D this is how hard the resin gets.
