Keycapize me (aka the MonaKey)
« on: Sat, 28 December 2013, 13:24:50 »
Okay I'm building a database of keycaps to be used as a reference to obtain this kind of images thanks to a software I'm writing (please consider it's in a very early development phase)

It's a very long process, I have just 140 keycaps so far to test the algorithm but the end result is very nice already, so I'll keep grabbing keycaps around to achieve better results. I believe the sweet spot is around 400-500 keycaps. I especially miss the light not-saturated colors (light blues, light greens, light yellows, skin tones, ...).

If you find pictures of keycaps taken from above please post them (the higher the resolution, the better). If there's interest in such a tool I'll put it online and release under open source license so you can keycapize your own pictures.

Brilliant. No modifiers for the lips or eyes ?

tiles have to be square to keep the algo relatively simple

I think if you could use more keycaps it would look amazing

that's what I'm trying to do but it's a long process.

I especially need skin tones and light colors, but any color that is not gray/black/beige is fine. The picture need to be taken straight from top (a little angle is fine). Thanks!

This is really fun!  I'll go through my SP crap bag and take pictures of all the interesting colors as soon as I get a chance.  I know there are some good yellows, pinks, reds, blues, and such.  Looking good so far Matt30!

That's amazing. What will it take to get the bottom part legible?

if you notice "geekhack" (which is already huge) is barely readable, making "keyboard enthusiasts" legible would require to reduce the size of the caps too much making them just indefinite little squares.

I assume it's using the colour average of the cap pic to do the matching, but if you make the image small enough you can use individual caps to spell the "keyboard enthusiasts" part, although then "geekhack" will most likely be unreadable.. sigh. Perhaps if you find the smallest size that geekhack is still legible, ignoring the keyboard enthusiasts bit and then just manually add it with single caps after, even though it will be smaller than in the original image... just throwing ideas around.

This is a very cool little project. I only have white and black blanks, so I'm afraid I can't contribute much.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

yes, manually adding the "keyboard enthusiasts" thing made out of single keycaps would be feasible. very nice solution actually! I'll try to work on it.
