5 more to tip the common kit!

Show Image

Slightly confused on how this group buy works... if a kit does not reach tipping point, is it not produced? On the pimpyourkeyboard site it says:
Quote
Please Note:
If you purchase this deal you will only be charged the final group price, when the deal expires, and only if it reaches the tipping point (MOQ).

I added the Cyrillic kit to my order, but it still needs 6 more orders to tip - if it doesn't reach that point, is that particular kit just removed from the total order?

Yeah, I think.
They'll refund you the cost of the kit, and the kit won't be made.

I'm guessing there is no way to see the current order value with the tiers taken into consideration or way to add more kits to an order?

Here's what I'd love to see:
  • Include a 7x spacebar with the pro modifier kit
  • Make internetional alpha kits complete with the full number row and missing function keys

Currently the sets heavily favor standard Filco-style layouts.  A 6.25x spacebar is included with the base alpha kit and everything else necessary.  Those with 7x spacebar layouts have to get extra pro modifiers AND an extra spacebar (and somehow the pro modifiers have more orders than 7x spacebars, which is just confusing).  And anyone wanting to get international kits has to buy a largely redundant standard kit.

Surely it shouldn't have been too difficult to accommodate, given that DSA is all symmetrical, and extra 1x keys allocated to certain sets for dye sublimation should not be a problem.

it has more orders likely because of special 60% layouts and the ergodox.

Separating the 7u spacebar actually worked considering that not all pro mod buyers got the 7u spacebars. The pro modifiers kit has a kit to swap ctrl/caps lock for example.

The international kits were merged to give everyone the possibility to get their language. All international users are helping each others to meet the MOQ. This has been discussed in the IC and nobody argued at the time.

Anyway we ran the IC for months. Discussing about these things at this stage is pointless.

I guess it depends on how the GB goes. The skull squadron set has been fully produced, even the sets that didn't meet the MOQ, so...

This is a bigger set btw, and different rules may apply.

Only 14 days left. This looks very good so far. As Matt said the next stop should be 100 kits. It is interesting that some people, seven to be precise, did not get any modifiers, neither text, nor icons. It just does not make sense.

Yeah, that makes sense. Ergodoxers do not need the standard modifiers. I just hope the icon pro mods did it, if not I am going to need some changes in my order  :(

I'm one of those non-mod 'doxers; I have enough alternative key needs that dropping the $36 for a bunch of mods that won't fit my board is pushing the envelope. Love my Pro kit, though!

Of course, and it makes total sense. I was just wondering why some people took the base set, with no mods. My bad, I did not think that have an ergodx, because I do not have one.  :p

Gotcha, thanks for the reply - here's to hoping they produce all the kits listed regardless of MOQ

Oh yeaaah, please drive down the price of the blue enter key!  :thumb:

HyperFuse & Penumbra were the first sets I tried to somewhat future proof, and I decided to go whole hog on Granite as well... the DSA profile looks so good imo & the feel of it is really growing on me, plus dye-sub PBT is my favorite! With Matt3o's topre MX sliders & the CM Novatouch on the horizon, I've got no regrets investing in nice keycaps for future keyboards.

Anyway we ran the IC for months. Discussing about these things at this stage is pointless.

To be fair, I posted in the IC thread inquiring about this too, which did not get addressed.  You released the picture of the Cyrillic kit on March 25th.  On the 26th, I posted part of my concern: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=55314.msg1271882#msg1271882
We did not have pricing information yet either to decide how it would all play out.

Then shortly after, the group buy goes live, and now it's too late.  It's never too late for constructive criticism, as from what I understand, you will continue offering sets through SP for some time, so it would be helpful if at least in the future you could address these concerns before the group buy goes live.

For what it’s worth, that’s an exaggeration. The thread was up for just about exactly one month before the group buy started, and most of the decisions about which sets to make seem to have been made in about 2 weeks. I also thought it felt kind of rushed.

BUT! Rushed is better than the alternative, which is stalling and waffling and letting the schedule slip and slip, which is what I tend to do (and seems to be a very common problem for group buys). So I’m not complaining. :-)

Cyrillic set was not even meant to be part of the GB I was able to sneak it in at the very last moment. So that's what I could come up with. Sorry if it's not perfect. I'll do better next time.

The 7u spacebar in the pro kit is not really possible at this time. I don't think I've heard any complain about it before, though.

Our concerns are with the kit distribution, which was discussed much closer to the group buy start--within a month of it.  It is good that you will take our comments into consideration for future reference.

Yes, which sets include what--and also prices, which we did not know (like $8 for a single 7x spacebar to start with, when the base kit includes a 6.25x basically for free, and $6 for just one 7x spacebar after the first tier, etc.)

oh I can explain that. I set the MOQ at 25 for most of the kits (15 for some), and at that tier they didn't seem bad. SP wanted to bring it down to 10 and so we have pretty heavy prices. I hope it won't be a problem to reach 25 for the 7u ($4.50). The pro kit is not tsangan at all, it has a lot of keys and it's not just for 1.50u mods keyboard. we didn't want to make it more expensive than what it already is.

I changed those kits so many times and tried to make everybody happy, of course that's not possible.

Slightly confused on how this group buy works... if a kit does not reach tipping point, is it not produced? I added the Cyrillic kit to my order, but it still needs 6 more orders to tip - if it doesn't reach that point, is that particular kit just removed from the total order?

I guess it depends on how the GB goes. The skull squadron set has been fully produced, even the sets that didn't meet the MOQ, so...

This is a bigger set btw, and different rules may apply.

Latest update:

Gotcha, thanks for the reply - here's to hoping they produce all the kits listed regardless of MOQ

Probably gonna pick a 7u spacebar and the blue enter kit, since it's right on the cusp of another price break.

This is the first set that I'm buying for keyboards I don't actually own at the moment.

After reading this, I'm thinking I should go "whole hog".

Hmmm.....

Next time make the usual 87Keys+tsangan+numpad, when people have nothing they haven't something to complain about

Definitely interested! But as a modified keyboard n00b, I have a few questions:

I'm building an Ergodox to use with my Mac, so I was wondering what set of text modifiers would I need, 1u, 1.25u, or 1.5u on the Apple Kit?

And would this cover all of the keys I need?:
- Common Kit
- Ergodoxian
- Apple Kit
- Text modifiers

Thank you for your help & I'm looking forward to this!

Maybe someone can tell you what you need to know, just based on your description. But, I think it may be better if you post a picture (image, or mockup) of the Ergo's layout you want to dress up with this set.

Matt did a great job, but in this type of group thinking there is always someone that was left not totally happy. Besides, I think those last posts may have very good advice, but I wonder if they had pushed their ideas a little bit more during the IC phase, how good that would be. Anyways.

Is there a site I can see all of the different key cap colour codes on. Not just the ones in this group buy, but all the different colours. I would like to see what would like to see which of the blank mod kits I should get if the blank pro set does not tip.

Thanks, I briefly looked around on their site, but I didn't find it. I might have just been blind though.
