Design & Inspiration
The original idea for this set comes from having a fully functional Japanese kit. Current GMK sets are not functional on a modern Japanese keyboard. This set hopes to inspire the idea of having future GMK IC's the chance to offer a Japanese extension kit as an option. Hopefully this might inspire new types of keyboards to be used. This kit combines both ANSI and JIS.

87c JIS PCB sitting in my house waiting to go to GB with all of it done. Might need a plate.
88 JIS PCB is already done and should go to group buy really soon. With plates and everything done!
60 percent JIS PCB - Ai03 has one out and I'll be coming out with one after I get plates done.
Safa TKL will offer a JIS ready plate with a 3u spacebar. I have a prototype with the proper plate and I'll be doing a build stream for it soon.
There is a 65% JIS in the hopper which needs a prototype.

In addition people are already adding JIS kitting to new GMK keycap sets! Very exciting!

I'm pretty sure this set will make it. Mekibo is a good vendor and knows when to pull a set, there's a reason why it's still up. Vendors are probably working behind the scenes to make sure that they can buy the set out. I've made sure to pick up a Base Kit and the Emergency Exit artisan!

"As per the new 4.5U Spacebar in the GMK JIS Spacebars kit. There is no Cherry Definition to the sizing. Can you please review the following specification, if this is correct?"



I thought I would share with everyone not just my Discord group. There have been some submissions on different 4.5u spacebars but wanted to see if anyone had other comments. This is likely to effect on all 4.5u spacebars where there are no molds currently, not only GMK. I'm also waiting on 2 more 4.5u spacebars and will measure them just to be sure. One from KBRepublic and one from Filco.

GMK was sent and received two 4.5u spacebars and a 4.5u stabilizer for comparison to make their mold.

I sent them an XDA from KBRepublic, a Filco from a Filco JIS set, and a stabilizer from Aliexpress. I also asked if they would like an SA for comparison.

After the spacebars were sent to GMK, I have not heard anything.

The last I heard is that they wanted the banderrole in some short amount of time. I have not heard anything since. I will try to follow up on what the bandderrole ended up looking like.

I believe they both have that. The main difference is the font type.

GMK Laser has a thicker font style.

Striker has roman legends adjusted to cherry font, in addition to some fixes from the original.

I have voted (I voted 2), but more than any personal preference or aesthetic consideration I think that this set should be no more or less than a JIS equivalent of the standard GMK WoB, and that people may well want to pair it with keys from that set, so whichever is closer to the standard GMK legends is the one that should be used.

(All this is assuming the only thing under discussion is the typeface and not the legends themselves… obviously the legends should be those that were shown in the original renders, i.e. the 0 key should have the を legend on it, as Serika and Striker do and Laser does not, etc.)

Highly suggest going with Striker/Serika. Zambumon put in the work to fix the legends for a reason.

Looking at the examples listed, it appears there are three versions of Hiragana sub-legends available for the bracket/brace keycaps.



Option 1 examples show two different versions.  Call Laser's Version A, and Red Samurai's Version B.

Option 2 Serika and Striker both show Version C.

Also, the Hiragana sub-legends for the period/greater than and forward slash/question mark keycaps are different between Option 1 and Option 2.

Also, almost all Numrow Hiragana sub-legends are different between Option 1 and Option 2

I'm not sure which version of Hiragana sub-legends is best, but maybe this is the more important question?

Regarding the preferred thickness of Latin legends, looking at photos of actual GMK keycaps would be better.  I don't think these kit renders capture the actual product with 100% accuracy.  For example, all four legends on the single quote/double quote and semicolon/colon keycaps look different.
