[GB] GH-122.2016 R1 PCB - Completed!
« on: Mon, 07 March 2016, 17:53:11 »

Shipped!

All PCBs that can be shipped have been shipped!

 - Ron | samwisekoi

The GH-122 project got over-complexified and died of its own weight last time around.  But I still want an MX F-122 style keyboard.  (I use an F-122 at work, but it would be too loud for home.)

So I went back to the drawing board and came up with a design that has all the essential features of the original GH-122, but without the elevety-seven things that made it too complex to finish.

This board is ready to order!

GH-122.2016 Group Buy

COST:
If we order 20 of these, they will be $50 USD each, plus shipping ($15 for USPS Large Game Box to CONUS addresses).

Features:
- 7x24 Keyboard Matrix
- Teensy++ 2.0 Controller
- 100% Through-Hole Components
- 150+ Switch positions
- Full ANSI, ISO, and IBM F-122 Layout support (including dual split shift keys)
- 1.25 or 1.50 Modifiers with 6.25 or 7.00 spacebar
- PCB-mount switches and stabilizers in all positions.
- All 2.00 positions can be split into 2x1.00 keys
- Centered or offset Caps Lock positions
- PCB can be cut to fit Unicomp PC-122 case
- PCB can be cut and bent full-width
- CAPS (2x) plus NUM and SCRL LEDs
- All switch positions have pads and holes but not wiring for backlighting
- V++, Ground, and 2x PWM pads provided for expansion/backlight control
- Extra 2.00 position added to every row in left banks.
- Bonus switch position to enable a left-hand arrow block.

PCB will be 19.500" x 6.50" x 0.62" thick, black solder mask with white silkscreen.
- To be manufactured in traditional 0.062" material.
- Eight 0.125"  mounting holes around edge of PCB.
- Made in USA.

Caveats
Sorry, no ALPS support for this pass.

What is left to do?
⊠ Find 20 0 more homes for a giant keyboard.
⊠ Talk Metalliqaz into adding this to his Easy AVR USB Keyboard Firmware and Keymapper.
⊠ Collect money
⊠ Order PCBs
⊠ Wait a couple of weeks.
⊠ Test PCBs with Easy Keymap
□ Ship PCBs to happy homes.

Please reply to this thread to confirm final interest in buying this PCB.

So are we able to fit these babies in our 2100s and can we order plates along with them that will fit?

This looks like a dream for me.

But a few question left:
1, Shipping to Germany is possible?/How much?
Or is ordering it/receiving it in September is fine? (will visit New York so shipping costs could be shorten.. maybe)
2. Do I need to solder anything other than switches onto the board? (If I will have to solder a teensy maybe it works, but anything else I really DO NOT KNOW (the total newbie at this)
3. Is it possible to replace the display in the top right corner which switches?
4. ISO is supported, but (like you said) I can make some nice things like HHKB Rshift..., or?
5. Casing is probably meant to be made by myself - so wood work I come.. ;)
6. Whats about the top plate? Include/ not because of the many different variants?

Thanks so far!
Winter is coming.

I don't know.  I do not have a 2100.  I am not doing plates, but perhaps Swill's tool will help.

This looks like a dream for me.

1. I don't know the cost of shipping to DE, but I do know customs is a pain.  I'd be happy to hang onto one board and ship it to NY in September.
2. Switches, diodes, three resistors, three LEDs, and the Teensy.  Everything except the Teensy is easy.  Lots of items, but all easy.  By the time you get finished soldering 120+ diodes, you'll be able to solder the Teensy.  Also, you could solder in a socket for the Teensy, and only risk that.
3. That isn't a display, that is the Teensy controller.  So no.
4. Yes.
5. Also yes.
6. Not included because of the huge range of possibilities.

You are very welcome.

On a second note.
I want this as soon as possible!
fairly sure this will fit into my build I'm working on right now.
and I don't really feel like wiring each switch individually with a teensy++ with as many keys as this thing has...
here is what I am working with currently.

I'll go in for one.

I was thinking of socketing the Teensy myself, just because the Teensy++ is expensive and I might want to use it on another project someday.

Guess I'll have to get a bag of Gaterons, though.  I was following this project from the beginning-- even ordered in a big bag of diodes and a Teensy++ in anticipation-- but set aside a huge quantity of Matias Clickies for the project. :p

I was looking at something like this.  http://www.hammondmfg.com/pdf/1456WL1.pdf

In an ideal world, someone could cut those top panels to serve as plates, or bend plates they cut to match them.  In a more practical approach, you could cut out portions of the top panel and bolt the keyboard assembly so the keys poke through.

@samwisekoi

Thanks for your reply.
1 So basically I have to get the diodes somewhere (mouser - can you provide me a link? - so I have to learn how to solder them)

2What do you mean with "make a socket for the Teensy"?
Whats the maximal number of possible switch positions? (I assume around 130, if I use the complete top left part..

3 I need to get PCB-Mount switches (or desolder them from some old boards!?)

4 Due to no top plate I can easily switch the springs?

Overnight update:

I have an empty beige PC-122 case from Unicomp.  They cost $20, and look like a nice textured-plastic M-122 case, which they probably are.  I believe I can modify the layout to enable the PCB to be cut into two or three sections to fit the Unicomp case with some ribbon cables.

Would that path be interesting to anyone?

For non-US people, you could buy the case from Unicomp and have it shipped to me.  I could then place the raw PCB into the Unicomp package and re-ship it to you.

Wouldn't that case be really odd fitting due to the curved backplate though?

I tested it with a 60% board and some SA keycaps.

Fits fine!  Don't even need the SA keycaps.

Quite sure that this could be modified to be made compatible with a g80-3000 case. Those who want such compatibility could simply not install the second row of function keys.

Kewl.  What controller does it use?

Teensy++.  I needed the pins for the big ol' matrix.

You don't actually need it.

I'm planning to do 6x22 matrix with a 6$ Arduino Pro Micro clone, using 3x 74HC238 decoders and 1x 74HC151 multiplexer.
For the addressing of columns I need 6 pins: 3 pins for writing a 3 bit digital number (0-7) as column address, other 3 pins are for enabling the correct decoder, which will put 5V on the selected column.
Rows are read back through the multiplexer: 3 pins for 3 bit row address (0-7), 4th pin for enabling it's output. (it should be disabled when you are setting the address bits)

So I need 10 pins total, and theoretically I can access 8x24 keys.

Ofc, I have to rewrite the addressing part of the firmware.

What's the timeline for this? I want one, but this coming next ~4 weeks will be a bad time for hobby projects.

Can I sign an IOU and pay after my taxes are resolved? ;-)

Other than that, I'm in. And I'm oddly thinking of gateron reds for this. Wouldn't that be a kick? BS layout with superlight keys...

Still going to make a BS ergodox-alike. Hope to be typing on it by summer 2017...

But I'm confused by the notes in the OP; is this going to cost $50 or $70?

One of the things we talked about last time was using an extra - thick PCB.  Assuming we do NOT do that, the PCB should be less than $50.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up. It made more sense the second time I read through it.

Just so everyone knows, there's no reason you couldn't program this board with TMK if that's what you prefer (I do). I'll probably end up making a TMK keymap for this if nobody beats me to it.

- Holes and pads - but no circuits - for LEDs in all positions.

To be clear, there's holes for the leds but the leds are not connected to the teensy. So, if I wanted leds, I would have to somehow wire them up, right?

Wow, I didn't even notice that... but I think we are only seeing a few layers of the entire PCB.  I doubt sam would bother cutting holes for LEDs and not connect them back to the controller.

Honestly, I would like to see the extraneous LED holes and pads removed, to bring the price down. But I'll buy one anyway.

Those LED holes don't add cost, and they are tiny, so they don't interfere with trace runs.  LED resistors, however, those make layout much harder, and with a board this big I wanted the space around the swiitches.

Since I don't personally use backlighting, I don't want to make my life harder to enable it.  But, since some people really like backlighting, I always leave the Cherry LED holes in place so they can be wired by hand.

What would add cost is another layer, so this is a two-sided PCB, which is all that is needed for a keyboard.

That's good to know. I guess I assumed that drilling all those holes would add cost, but I admittedly don't know much about PCB manufacturing/pricing.

I spent more time working on putting this PCB into the Unicomp case.  I think it is possible; it just might not be a good idea.

Regardless, I'll leave the IBM 0.350" gutter spacing to retain that possibility, but personally I think I will go for a sandwich case.  The attached design is completely inspired by the 60% acrylic cases designed by user alixinhzai  from Viet Nam in 2013.  This version is rendered in layers of color to provide clarity.  Stabilizer cut-outs are not shown.  Plate thicknesses are:

Bottom, middle (plate layer) and top: 3mm/1/8".
Spacer layers (shown in white): 6mm/1/4".

All layers except the top layer are drilled for blind screws; the top layer is glued to the first spacer to hide the screw holes.  The LED spacing matches the M-122 indicator label available from Unicomp.USB cable exits from the right rear.  Feet TBD.

I used a pretty random layout for this mock-up, but we should standardize on two or three for cost reasons.  Also, once they are ready, I'll provide the CAD files for the case to anyone who wants to make one, source on, or use exotic materials like wood or metal.

Thoughts?

p.s.  I have a full reel of diodes, so if anyone who gets one of these boards wants some, I'll happily send some.

Wow. Any idea, roughly, what such a sandwich case would cost?

Not yet.  I have to draw up some proper CAD files and get a quote as a baseline.

Whats about the plate? I assume it isn't bent so should I get these sculpted keycaps for? Otherwise I will use normal ones

@samwisekoi:Could you please refer to my pm? :)

New PCB layout.  Updates:

1. Cutout marked for 2x12 upper bank rotation.  Jumper pads provided for use in IBM/Unicomp/other bent cases.
2. Teensy++ controller rotated 90 degrees to provide direct USB access from the rear of a sandwich case.
3. Change #2 required the indicator LEDs to rotate and move as well.
4. Silkscreen marked for F-122/ISO-style layout, including dual split shift keys.  (This did NOT change the available switch positions, just the paint.)
5. Added .250" border padding to entire PCB.

Case design to follow when I can get to it.

p.s.  I don't have time to get to all of the PMs.  Please note questions in the thread and I will respond here when I can.

Is it possible to make some of the macro-keys on left side/up 2x size? Maybe also delete key?
Top left should be cause I can see the stab mounts (if I interpretate them right)

if backlighting is too hard to make, could I use LED strips?

questions about buying.

I like it. Will also take diodes, so I don't need to get them from somewhere.
Are you also selling (eventually from previous groupBuys) some pcbs/keycaps/stabs/this tool to easy change switch springs?

And maybe a kit to add backlighting to this (assuming I am able to do the main part without problems)?

Also looking to get a matrix-board pcb/gh 36/ergodox/Atomic or WhiteFox..
Just curious, if you have something in stock ;)

if you are fine with keeping it for a few month - shipping on time (around 2-3 weeks time to arrive in NY) is not a problem i assume, or?
Shall I pay now or only before flying to New York? (im fine with both)

Thank you very much!

Top left should be cause I can see the stab mounts (if I interpretate them right)

Upper-left corner is for a pair of (optional) 2x keys. The bank on the left is not.  If that is exciting to someone I can easily add that capability.

if backlighting is too hard to make, could I use LED strips?

Probably not.  At best you will get lighting on the sides of the case, but not from the keys themselves.

However, I am not the best guy to answer LED questions, since I don't use them.

Fine for diodes; remember to tell me later (when I ask.)  I am absolutely not offering anything besides the PCB at this point.

Again, not my thing.

I have no stock, but keep an eye on the GH-36 thread, as I may be having more of those made.

Would the PCB be mounted to the case in any way or would it be the type that is held in suspension by the switches and the switch plate?
