Ducky Shine4 duel-color backlit
« on: Mon, 13 October 2014, 22:17:18 »
Hello GHers,

I am lucky to be invited to join Ducky Shine 4 Product Launch Event last week.
https://www.facebook.com/117547488320354/photos/a.657835394291558.1073741838.117547488320354/727858637289233/?type=1&theater
In the end of this party, Ducky give us a gift and I can share to you.

=== Shine 4 unboxing ===

Box size is same as Shine3

The box art is changed into colorful theme.

Contents:
Besides manual and warranty license, we have USB cable/WASD key caps/key puller.

Front view of keyboard, the height and angle of inclination are lower now.
We have a picture about engineering sample, there are two buttons in function.

I think it's pity that Ducky cancel this design and back to 108 keys layout.

Art of space bar of this year, it is horse according to lunar calendar.

Case in plastic with Hair-Line Surface. Bring Shine4 to be high quality.

In the bottom side, Ducky add their product line icon.
(mini/premier/zero/legend are different logo)

USB port connection: set in the middle position.

New design in bumpers, two assemble rubber feet can change the height.

Power on!
The backlit function is like Ducky-Mini, too complexity to describe.
Check manual is better to understand their design.
Here is something special, CM1/CM2 mode will have the highest priority to show backlit function.
So shine4 can combine two modes on backlit now.

Another great point.
To prevent user trigger wrong setting of USB delay and repeat rate,
Shine4 add FN+ESC to call function layer, then user can change the setting.
This feature is like Ducky Advisior which is implemented on Ducky-Mini.

Is this lower profile than the Ducky Shine 3?  Not a fan of the huge waste of space around the keyboard.

Yes, Shine4 is lower than Ducky others.
If remove the feet, Shine4 is like Cherry MX2.0 but with OEM profile keycaps.

I know it's the year of horse and all but, I still prefer a simple spacebar.  Like a dash or something.

Also I find it odd how they added the circular dot on the caps lock key, but it still doesn't use 2 separate LED.  Reason being it is still unlit (assuming caps lock off).  I like how they implemented in Poker 2 that it has 1 LED for legend and 1 for indication.

Although the rest is not bad, but I feel like at this point Das has better implementation on this style of design.

Thanks for sharing. Does it come with a plain spacebar like previous Shines or is it stuck with the YotH spacebar?

Thank you very much for sharing this with us! I like it a lot!

Low profile, dual colour LED's with complex lighting modes, premium case design. And they finally made a good USB connection position, although I'm not a fan of the bend. Is the USB still Mini or have they switched to Micro yet?

Very nice. I hope the TKL version looks as good and that they release a version with MX Clears :)
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

One thing that turns me off is how reflective the keyboard is.

Maybe I'm biased, using HHKB (with almost no visible bezel) and QFS (with matte black rubberised case).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Also a bit concerned about that stuff on the enter key.... Is that an undocumented feature or just something that happens when you REALLY like your new keyboard.

The dot on the Caps Lock is for indicating when it is recording keycap illumination and color...but I agree. My problem so far is that it seems that the Scroll, Caps, and Num Lock are only one color and cannot be programmed to be a different color. If someone figures it out, please let me know...

Oh, the colors fight each other?  I wasn't super keen on the board, but since the colors duel, it could be awesome.
