The Mech27-TKLv2 is my second design, and I've cut no corners with this production run. Custom printed packaging, foam, local machining (I live 10 minutes from the shop!), and alignment pins built right into the case.
What's in the Mech27-TKLv2 Kit?
- 6061 Aluminum Case available in Alloy Silver, Meteorite Black, Navy Blue, and Classic Red.
- 210 Brushed Brass plate supporting split left and right shift, split backspace, and ansi/iso enters.
- Genuine Cherry PCB-mount stabilizers.
- TX87 PCB with JiGon mapper/firmware.
- Screws and bumpons.
How much will it cost?
$399.99 USD + Shipping. It will be insured for, and declared at full value. Shipping will be calculated at checkout but estimates are provided below.

With a MOQ of 50 units and a hard limit of 50 units, they will be sold via raffle entered below. Winners will be provided a one-time use coupon code to be used during checkout at Mech27.com (https://www.Mech27.com) via email. Colour will be chosen at checkout.

What's the weight on the assembled prototype? What was the v1?
Assembled, with caps, switches, and all the bells and whistles is 2.4kg (this is with an aluminum plate).
The v1 was just over 3kg assembled with caps and switches.

Would I be correct in saying that the silver for the second round is slightly darker than the silver in the first round? It looks closer to a gray-ish color in the assembled pics, looks real nice. Either way, I like the matte finish way more.
The silver is definitely a bit darker, mainly due to the matte finish.

Would the silver option just be unpainted aluminum or would it be painted silver? I know it's a bit late for questions but I didn't think about it until now.
The keyboard is anodized so there's no paint involved. It's sandblasted and anodized with no tint.

Adding a new color for anodizing costs too much for it to be worth it; 4 colors is as good as 27 could get for this. There's a little more info sprinkled throughout the thread.

That would be me! I checked with 27 and he said it was OK for me to talk about it here, though I won't have much news till I get my V2 in hand.
I'll be offering diffusers in clear or "smoke". Or custom colors if requested. I've already made custom diffusers for my Mech27 TKL v1 including a black spacer to increase the height.
I go by thebeephaha on reddit and you can see some of my custom acrylic work.

The extras are being made with some of the leftover money for incidental costs, which are part of why this GB is more expensive than round 1. Extras will also be sold after the GB at a slight premium ($450 as opposed to $400), so I'd recommend buying sooner rather than later.
A few people have been asking me (politely and privately) why this GB is more expensive than round 1. First, it is made in Canada as opposed to China, and because of that the machining cost is significantly higher. Second, the custom boxes cost more than the previous shipping solution, but will help to prevent issues with missing parts and shipping damage. Third, there is a higher margin in this GB than in the last one to cover incidental costs (extras, raised prices on certain parts, and other minor things), as well as to assist in funding for prototypes in further GBs.
Follow this thread for updates. We're trying to be as communicative as possible. As soon as there are any updates, either 27 or I will post here. We've noticed the recent trend of group buy runners being totally uncommunicative, and we'd like to break it.

I really want to join this as I supported 27 from the previous GB, however, I can't do those colors. 27, no way you can get that goldish color you have as a proto from R1? Literally dream color. :(
Different anodizer (since it's made in canada), so impossible to get a perfect match.
I believe they had a gold option, but more than 4 colors was far too expensive on the back end. Maybe in a future run.

My aunt and cousins live in Calgary. I went to visit when i was a kid and fell in love with these. So since about 1990 they have been mailing me Smarties for Christmas every year. :thumb:

Standard WKL stabs are 7u long for space.

I'm pretty sure stabs are included unless you really want those Zeal stabs.

It's a plate with MX + Alps compatible cutouts, so it should support switch top opening for both MX and Alps.

It has double sided tape attached to the cork. So just peel and stick! It also has enough give to let you place it lightly and try again if you aren't spot on. Though once it's on there and has had 5lbs of pressure sitting on it for a while, you're probably going to need to use a heat gun to get it off again (this will not damage the ano).

I'm not sure how long of a delay this will cause, but if everything is sorted with this latest email it should be resolved tomorrow and be on the way from the port in Toronto to me here in Ottawa. If all goes well I should have it all shipped by the end of the month.

Pros: Packaging is great. Machining/milling work looks fantastic. Weight is pretty good w/o the added bulk of a brass weight add-on. The plate was burr free and honestly the scuffed look isnt bad.
Cons: Color came out burgundy instead of the red from the sample image. I'm just glad i had gmk burgundy laying around as Honeywell or LedZeplin was waaaay off. Top and bottom were different color batches so they're a little different as well. The alignment pins only lined up on the top (only received 2 of the 4?) and still had some issues getting them in

looks like red wine. the matte finish seems to take out the vibrant tone of the color.

reset it, update the firmware, try again
if it still doesn't work it's a problem with the PCB and not the firmware, i think

Is anyone else having a problem with the underglow RGB not wanting to remain off? It's remembering my keymap but when i turn on my computer or unplug/plug in the board its forgetting the LED settings. Kind of irritating having to go into Jigon every morning and turning it off again. Never had this problem win my TX87 and its the exact same PCB...

I think powdercoating could be nice ive heard other coatings like cerakote are worse than anodization tho.
Edit: How will the tolerances be if the case gets powdercoated?
Edit 2: If powdercoating is avaiable can we choose new colors? If so would purple be avaliable?

As for tolerances, powder coating is ~0.1mm-0.2mm thick typically, which is reasonable.

I am not comfortable with the mandatory switch from ano to powder coat, but I'm holding out to see pictures of the new finish. I'm considering trying to sell my spot, or swap my navy for a silver if there's still interest at that point.

One month no update :(
Yeah, it's kind of a bummer. I do have some specific questions that I thought might be addressed shortly after the last update, but no answers yet:
- Will the completed, anodized silver and navy boards be shipped ahead of the powder coated boards? If not, what are they waiting on?
- Has the owner of the one, powder coated navy order been notified, or has someone voluntarily selected that finish?
- For the powder coated boards, will the top and bottom both be refinished with powder coat? The wording of the last update made it sound like only the top or bottom would be refinished, depending on what was defective.
- Can you set some reasonable expectations for the next steps? I expect that powder coating samples should be available any day now. Assuming they look good, would it take another month to get all the boards refinished? Then, what else needs to be done before final shipments can go out?

Just so this thread isn't TOO worried, 27 is alive. I don't know what % of re-finished boards I helped him take back home for QC from the manufacturer, but it was >50% and he's going through them. These were the re-anodized cases. He also dropped the final samples for colour-matching on the powder-coating, and the manufacturer will have it all turned around soon. My understanding is he's currently short on cash for shipping, so he's figuring QC and shipping overhead at the same time. This update is from July 4th (when I last saw him), so you can expect some progress has been made on both fronts.
Just so we're clear, I'm not too up to date on the EXACT status of everything. I'm just trying to give an update some people might not know about to soothe tension. :)

my understanding is that the cost of refinishing the boards has eaten through the extra margin
the main problem was with the anodizer, as they just... held the messed up boards for a long time without saying anything

I think he's just stressed. When I asked, he said he wants to post when he has an update. Technically since his last post there's been no progress other than he did what he wanted to do.
For what it's worth, I have an update on my end in that 27 and I have agreed on the sale I mentioned in my last post, so he should have some head-room to start shipping things now.

I was told in PM that shipping would start by end of August for silver/black as those had completed re-ano some time ago, but it looks like this GB is not a priority (no responses on geekhack or discord, last response mentions some other *project* being worked???). This whole thing is very sad, I hope the community realizes soon that it is not wise to hand these young, ambitious, often students, thousands of dollars to do with as they please.

Running a business well does take a lot of maturity, but there are also a lot of things that can put someone under that are out of anyone's control.
Honestly, my initial reaction would be to hate on 27, saying to myself, "Don't be like that guy;" but thinking more on it, I could 100% end up just like him if I jumped into a creative project and got hit with things I couldn't know about until they happened.
I have a keyboard project I'm working on and hope to bring to the community, but seeing what's happened with GBs like this and the Espectro, I realized I need to make sure I source things as close to home as possible. That's time consuming and more costly (in the US), but ultimately, I think it will allow me to have a quicker turnaround, do the QC myself, and make adjustments on the fly way better.
BUT I would not have taken that pause and reassessed if I didn't witness the pain that 27 has gone through. I wasn't involved with the GB, so obviously I can't tell anyone to give him slack, but I have seen that he's been apologetic, is seemingly repentant, and people who know him in real life stick up for him; so that says a lot to me.
Other GB runners have disappeared for nearly a year, then come back in a quiet way and been given what seems like complete forgiveness. I believe 27 when he says he's struggling financially, and I applaud that he's still showing his face and trying to find avenues to raise money to fix this.
I hope everyone gets what they paid for. And I hope 27 gets his feet under him.
If it were me, I'd try some BBQ fundraisers, as I've found that to be the quickest moneymaker when I was in the Air Force. Our boxing club made $5,000+ in a couple hours with hot dogs, burgers, and Gatorade (~$200 for the groceries). We offered free boxing lessons at the BBQ, but no one took us up on it. BBQ was all they wanted.

I think its important for GB runners to be prepared as much as possible and have backup solutions when things don't go planned.
In regards to your point about having manufacturing as close as possible like in the US, I just want to state I'm in the Modern M0110 GB and that has manufacturing moved to the US. We are currently 3 or more months behind schedule. We were supposed to have gotten our boards by Thanksgiving the latest
Location of manufacturing may matter, but having good planning, backup solutions ready and good communication with the customer when things go sideways is what separates Rama and Norbauer from the rest.

The last time I saw 27 in discord he mentioned that there were still 20 or so boards left to ship out. When the MD money comes, hopefully they’ll go out at last to people still waiting quickly.
for anyone curious the MD HPs are still on schedule to ship late this month/early next month

Apparently, 27's working full time now. He's working at a machine shop so he'll try to get the remaining units anodized using their connections. Naturally I assume the worst and wonder if he scrapped the undone boards for whatever they were worth. If he’s really hurting that bad for money I think it’s a possibility.

Same. Last I heard he was waiting for Massdrop to send him his payment in September and no responses since then. He sent a picture of a closet filled with boxes, but no picture with boards shown, so hard to say what exactly is going on.
