What will be soldered onto the PCB already? SMD components? Diodes? LED's? Nothing?
Title: Re: RS84 version3 75% kit
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Tue, 14 July 2015, 12:52:17
All SMD components come presolder, such as the contoller chip, smd rgb led, diode, resistor, USB connector, etc... you only need to solder the MX (compatible) keyswitch, and add in switch LED if you desire full backlighting.

I got mine through Ivan's last group buy.  Good board so far and the buy itself was pretty fast and almost entirely hypeless and without drama.  I highly recommend.

Judging on the picture it looks like the PCB is set up for PCB mount switches. Is this correct and the reason why the plate is optional? Are stabilizers included? Just wondering so I can order parts.

Yes, the PCB is set up for PCB mount switches. No you don't get stabilizers in this kit.

Is there anywhere besides GON and Winkeyless that sell PCB mount stabilizers?

www.ortholinearkeyboards.com has 2u PCB stabilizers, but he only seems to sell them with the Planck Universal top plate (since it needs one). You would just need longer wires for spacebar. Not sure if the wires for the plate mount ones are the same but he does have those too.

Thanks for the info. The ortholinear stabs are plate mount I believe and I'm planning on not doing a plate for this res scarf. I found the part numbers for pcb mount stabs and found that Mouser has them in stock. I have the capabilities to make my own wires.

Check out Sprit's GB threads.  I purchased some VERY nice Gold PCB stabs (he has OG non-gold stabs as well) from him not too long ago.  His shipping speeds are hit or miss though, but for the most part, I've ordered from him twice and never really had any issues to speak of.

For international, if you are good with paying the $30-35 shipping price then by all means.
These are set up for PCB mount, so the plate is entirely unnecessary and why it is an optional. PCB mount Cherry stabs are required, no other stab types will work even with plate.

Any chance of the stabs being added to this GB?  Would definitely make it more attractive to me.

I found PCB Mount stabs on Mouser here (http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/CHERRY/0G990742/?qs=gRhKogWf4mJMsqcRiRw1sw%3D%3D). These came with a wire too. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find 6.25x wire for PCB mount stabs anywhere so I just ordered an extra set of the stabs to use and will attempt to make my own wire.

I have loads of 6.25 PCB spacebar wires (the style that have switch clearance bend, can't be used with plates) left.

Is the bottom pair gray in that picture? I'm only asking so I am 100% sure I don't get dark gray when I would like light gray. And I don't want silver that's very shiny.

I'm also looking for an example of the color difference. Shiny silver is not something I would be down with but a light gray silver would be cool.

Here is what the silver plate looks like, the silver feet are similar.

Is this only open to USA? Also will 1.8mm LEDs work instead of 3mm? Is a Teensy required? Does the aluminium case feet option contain 2 feet, Or do I need to order two?

Sorry for all the questions, first time building my own board from scratch!

You don't need a teensy. Controller and all other SMD parts come presoldered.

Hmmm. RS III and RS84 V3 seem to be different keyboards. The matrix is a different layout with a 10key incorporated.

In his other thread Ivan says it is running TMK based firmware: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=69064.msg1661983#msg1661983

If it's the same PCB as the previous RS84, then yes it's 100% programmable and is essentially the same as programming the RSIII. Between the RSIII flashing guide here https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=69282.0 and the details that geniekid and digi worked out here https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=69064.msg1799365#msg1799365 I was able to reflash it with a custom layout.

Yea you need to get your own PCB mount stabs. GON and Winkeyless have sets for TKL boards that includes wire that should do the job. I found the stab parts number on the MX datasheet and found that Mouser has stabs in stock. They have a few wire sizes in stock but not 6.25x for spacebar so I just ordered an extra set of 2.5x stabs and am making my own wire.

Plate-mount cherry stabs would theoretically work too?

But the ones from ortholinear was too thick for my taste for example, harvesting a wire from another keyboard is also a nice idea

I'm new to the keyboard community - recently ordered my first mech keyboard - but am interested in putting one together myself. This seems like a great deal. If any of you could give me some pointers and/or essentially hold my hand through the process it would be incredibly appreciated.

Thanks for the time!

Hi there, I've been in the scene a while and this is my first time building my own. This build actually comes with most parts pre soldered including the usb connector, underside RGB LEDs and the diodes. The only thing you need to get it up and running is to solder in the switches and any in switch LEDs that you want. Then program the keyboard with help from some of the links above me and there you have it :)

Make sure you use PCB mount stabs with straight spacebar wire. The bent ones have a clearance issue with the plate.

Hi everyone,

New here. Just bought an rs 84 with gateron blacks (assembled by someone else from previous group buy) and am trying to determine what keycap set to purchase. Can anyone point me in the right direction? It seems that any std base + mod DSA set from signature plastics with two additional 1.5u should cover it. Is that correct? Anything else I should be aware off? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

You need to send an email to the owner of Tom's Hardware requesting the change of address form, then you'll send that to the Cuban embassy in Canada to be verified. After you get it verified with the official Kappa seal of approval you'll have to hand deliver the document to the crown princess of Sweden. She will process your change. Hopefully you'll make it in time.

Or just contact the group buy organizer IvanIvanovich via private message here on the forum.

Ivan only updates when he has hard news.

He is running a few buys right now, and basically the only thing he could tell you right now is the obvious "in production"

I'm glad he does not fluff his buys with info that constantly leads people on and on like most organizers here do.
Title: Re: RS84 version3 75% kit

I would take a simple "in production" update at this point. It's nice to know that the group buy is moving at least.
Even a post to say he's still alive would be excellent after not logging in since the 14th.

I think there's a big difference between fluffing a group buy and updating with relevant information.

Orders closed on August 10th so it's been almost 2 months without any updates at all. It's great to not over promise on dates that can't be met, but at this point even just an acknowledgement that its still on going and that something is happening with the GB moving forward, even if it is just an "In Production" from Ivan himself, would be appreciated.

Why's that? Risk of overpromising? Giving out info that you probably shouldn't be giving out? Or is this a sarcastic comment that I didn't get?

Also note that Ivan hurt his arm in an accident a while ago and has been dealing with that. Since he's running a few buys right now I expect everything to be delayed.

That said, I'm quite glad Ivan is a trustworthy member.

I was being sarcastic.  Oversharing is the opposite of a problem when people's money is involved.  The idea that group buy organizers are filling their threads with "fluff info that constantly leads people on and on" is easily the most absurd thing I've heard all day.

I would have to disagree. At least when a group buy has a lot of "fluff" in it there's some confidence that the runner is still active and paying attention and that the group buy is still progressing in some form or other. In the case of this one, there has been no activity or updates at all since the closing of the buy, and Ivan's last post in the thread was on Aug 5th. There has to be some sort of middle ground between providing too much information that turns out being inaccurate and providing absolutely no information or status updates at all. Everybody accepts that waiting is part of the game, but I don't think it's unreasonable for people to want at least one update 7 weeks after orders were closed.

Jixr,

Thank you for providing this information. This gives me confidence. I'm new to the community here and this is one of my first couple group buys. I think some other satisfied clients of his posted laudatory comments as well; that helped with the initial commitment.

Asking for an update was never about not trusting Ivan. I am simply excited about getting the kit so I can build a cool board. Getting a single thumbs up after the buy was closed would even have been something.
So just that it's clear; Ivan is absolutely to be trusted with or without an update, but it doesn't change the fact that it would be nice to hear something about an exciting product that we are getting.

And I hope Ivan is doing well considering.

If anybody has direct contact with Ivan it would be great if you reached out to him to see what's going on with him.
He hasn't been logged in to his account since 14 September and he isn't replying to private messages, so even if Jixr is completely confident that nothing is wrong, experience dictates that when people disappear like this there is something wrong.
Hopefully Ivan is doing well, but I think it's time for people to hear that he's alive at least.

Keep in mind this isn't the only buy he is running at the moment.

I am primarily asking because I need to change my address before November. Secondarily I'm actually worried that Ivan is out of commission because of something worse than his BMX injury.

Title: Re: RS84 version3 75% kit

There is no need to try to mediate here.
Ivan hasn't logged in to his geekhack account in over a month, which is extremely strange for a group buy organizer that is running several gbs at once. Not to mention he is a global moderator too.

God forbid something is actually wrong with Ivan, but if we just let this go on without actually finding out, we will all be out of the money we invested if something has happened that will prevent him from fulfilling the group buy.
Just letting stuff like this slide is what has made a lot of group buys sour for a lot of people lately.
It's time to stop giving the excuse "group buys take time, so don't ask for updates".

Ivan last said something 5th of august in this thread. Ivan mentioned something specific about the group buy 30th of July, so it's clearly way over two and a half months since we had any updates.

Edit: OK guess I'm not getting the kit. Hope you guys get your kits. Doesn't seem like Ivan even wanted to talk about changing my address so he just refunded me straight up without a reply.

As an aside, about a week after RS84 was supposedly closed, I noticed the GB form was still open. I submitted it, I got an invoice in a couple of days, then the form was closed when I checked again a few days later. Shortly afterwards he posted about his accident. So even if he didn't post about it, things were most likely moving forward.

That's not to excuse the incommunicado, but to hopefully shed some light on his activity towards the end of the GB. Not sure how much it helps.

Good to hear that at least something has happened, but at least a "They're ordered" or such from Ivan would set a lot of people's minds at ease and would easily buy him 1 to 2 months more time if he had any serious problems that we are not aware of.

Hope you all get what you're looking for.

I didn't want to post again in this thread, but I have to.
Ivan is not refunding out of nowhere. I opened a dispute to cover my bases if he didn't reply about my address change. Ivan or someone that has access to his paypal decided to just refund me instead of just talking to me and changing my address.

sigh... Has anyone heard anything?

see:

And I did speak to him briefly the other day; he said he is working on group buy things, and will be updating once he makes some progress.  I'm not sure if we can assume he has caps in hand or not, but he is not off on an island with our cash.  :D
I emailed Ivan a few days ago about adding spacebars to an order that was transferred to me and he replied pretty quick saying I should ask again once he has received the keys. He is pretty busy at the moment.
I talked to Ivan and like I said, No news is good news with him!!!

It's just down to waiting...

How long is an acceptable amount of time to wait for this? I am fully aware of the situation with Ivan's injury, however going this long without any sort of update or activity at all does not instill confidence.

During the morning of Nov. 16, 2015, I had a brief email conversation with Ivan directly regarding the status of this group buy. With his permission I am reposting the information.

The order began production a couple weeks ago and is still in production. Declining to mention/commit to a definite timeline, he did mention a couple more months for production and transit time.

So an update for you guys.  ;D ;D

I hope that does a bit to settle some curiosity regarding this group buy.

Enjoy!

Is there any update on this? I sent a PM to Ivan yesterday and haven't heard anything yet. I saw that on December 4th he posted updates for his keycap GBs saying things were still in the works and to not send Paypal disputes.

Sorry I have not been around for awhile.

I just would like to let you know things are still in the works. Please be patient. Sometimes things can take longer than what was initially expected.

If you can PLEASE stop initiating paypal disputes I would really appreciate it. I simply don't have the money to be refunding everyone as it is tied up in product.
If you have an urgent inquiry, please simply send an email. Starting paypal disputes to send a question is not helpful.
THANKS.

Does the same apply for this GB? If this GB isn't happening I would like to be able to participate in Whitefox GB, but I cannot commit the funds to Whitefox while this GB is still in limbo. I don't mind the waiting but this GB could really use an actual update.

I have sent a Paypal dispute, but the dispute does not show up in the Resolution Center for my account...I believe since the transaction was back in July 2015 and was more than 180 days there might be nothing Paypal can do. If you paid with a credit card or bank and not paypal balance you can call your credit card company or bank and dispute the charge directly regardless if it has been past 180 days. Some credit card companys after a 190 day period will require you to fill out some quick paper work then mail it to them, but regardless they will help you get your money back.

For transparency sake, cross-post from PBT GB thread:

It be great to get some input from the Mods, maybe HoffmanMyster? Is there any positive confirmation that this buy is boned other than the lack of order for Miami Nights?

I reached out to Ivan last night when things started getting shaky (before the news was posted in the GMK buy thread), to A) verify he is alive and well and B) follow up with a direct inquiry as to the status of these three buys.  I did receive an email back from him last night (I mistakenly said in the GMK buy that he had not responded, which is not true - I didn't see his response at the time) and he said all is fine but he is not active much (I had not asked about the buys at this point).  I have responded asking very pointedly for an update re: lack of orders placed.  No word yet, but I will update as I can.

IF YOU ARE PART OF THIS GROUP BUY PLEASE READ

More than a reasonable amount of time has passed for Ivan to come forward and explain the situation.
I am now putting together as much evidence as I can to present to the relevant authorities.
I am calling on everyone who has participated in an affected Group Buy to forward me their relevant PayPal transaction details so that we have a solid case if the time calls for it.
The more evidence we gather, the better chance we have of this being taken seriously and getting our money back.

Please send the following:
- Paypal invoice from Ivan for relevant GB
- Paypal receipt from relevant GB
- Your contact details, including name, geekhack username, phone number and address [optional]

to
ivanevidence@gmail.com

The more evidence we get the better chance we have of getting our money back.
If any moderator wants to come forward and take sole or shared ownership of this email address for the sake of oversight please PM me.

If any of you are worried about sending me your personal information, please PM me and we can discuss you sending your evidence directly when the time calls for it.

Damn, looks like Ivan is on a roll here, first ripping everyone off in the Miami Sets section and now here for the 75% Keyboard model as well.

Is there any other Group Buys that he's still involved with?

Time to start conducting an OFFICIAL GEEKHACK STYLE WitchHunt.  Load up your Pitchforks and Light your flame torches because this mongrel has to be hounded into the Gates of Hell for what he's done to all of us here.  Don't know why all the Moderators are busy protecting him here, like he's still considered as their friend.  Any friend that has stolen hundreds of dollars out of my pocket would get bashed against a brick wall for several hours then allowed to crawl back into his hole.

Don't let rip-off merchants get away with such blatant liberties, like stealing hard earned cash and think they'll be loved for it  >:D .

He was also running the PBT Dark GB which apparently he has the sets but he's not paid the supplier.

I feel for you guys, lucky I didn't chime in here promoting him about this version 3 keyboard, it would be extremely embarrassing especially now.

Hope it's still viable for you lot here because having the GMK Miami set and this 75% keyboard fail as well, would be criminal without any other words.  The Bastard got away with at least $30'000USD (guessing) so it was extremely lucrative for him to have done this but of course leaving us with nothing but hatred towards him.

Now we are left with broken dreams and distrust towards anybody else, who wants to run any type of future Group Buy here on GH.

Of course this has been a big win for MassDrop and PMK.

I've sent an update email to everyone who has reached me on the gmail address

If you don't get it for some reason the gist of it is reach out to paypal as soon as possible and file a claim with them

Even though it is outside of the 180 day dispute period if enough people come forward they can investigate Ivan and take action against him

I called PayPal in the UK a few days ago and they wanted literally nothing to do with it regardless of much of a faff I made and just told me to submit a action fraud report.

Paypal says they're not responsible since its outside the dispute window and to submit a complaint to some government agency. My bank says they are not responsible since Paypal is a 3rd party payment processor. They have forms for me to fill out to submit a dispute directly to the merchant, but said it is not likely to do anything, especially if I've already tried submitting disputes directly through Paypal.

Pretty sure at this point everybody has given up on this and Ivan's other 2 GBs to ever be completed. My bank and Paypal refuse to do anything about it, so I think this GB is dead in the water.

717758631@qq.com

Thanks guys for liking the RS boards and I feel sorry for the loss that you guys had

Initially I thought I can stay out of this group buy (the GH groupbuy organized by ivan) but I don't wish you guys to suffer from any loss due to that incident.

I don't even know how many of you guys out there are in this so I don't know if I'm able to do anything to refund you guys or something.

However, I feel the need to do something.

two options:

1 - I'll provide 10 RS84 boards for everyone that's in the GB, winner (one board each) is chosen via raffle

2 - I'll provide a one time discount for any other groupbuys after this

I have two questions though:

1 - How can I know how many people suffered loss during the last GB by ivan?

2 - We need a middle man to handle logistics, and to handle international shipping

Thank you guys once again for supporting RS, and I feel sorry once again for anyone who suffered any sort of loss previously.

Let's discuss how can we solve this!

Or, send me an email here: 717758631@qq.com

Please find someone who uses Chinese to translate.
Glad that you like the RS boards, but unfortunately we suffered a loss.
Originally, this buy, I can stay out. But I still do not want someone who like RS keyboard to have a loss.
I don't know how many people this affected, so I don't know if this has the ability to compensate.
I feel like I must do something.
There are two options:

1. I offer 10 RS keyboards to those that was affected by this, by lottery pick.

2. Give discounts on a new buy

There are two problems:

1. How do I know the number of people affected?

2. I need for a middleman to deal with transport, as well as international freight.

Thank you once again for the support for RS keyboards. While people affected think about these options, we can talk about solutions.

Considering the only person with the list of orders is Ivan (and even the order form has been completely deleted now) we would have to get a new list of old participants going with some type of proof they ordered. If the 10 freebies would be getting raffled.

Screen shot from the paypal transaction maybe?

Ive given it some thought and decided that I would like to volunteer to be the middle man to get the 10 kits he has offered raffled out. As this is a VERY generous offer on his part and im not one to sleep on things like this especially with so much money involved and the tension with the whole Ivan thing (and me getting ripped off too!).

I am willing to temporarily absorb shipping costs from him (china) to me in Colorado then distribute them to the winners. Winners will still have to pay 1/10 of the china freight and then shipping to them. But hey, at least this is happening at all! :thumb:

I have constructed a form that requires basic info about your original order and a hosted screenshot of the Paypal "Transaction Details" page for the transaction where you paid Ivan for your order. So that we can verify that you were a legit participant in the original group buy. Emails and PM's have been sent to 悬壶济世 about me voulnteering for this so once I get an OK from him I will get you guys the link to the form.

Interesting.

Nice of him to do that out of his own pocket considering Ivan ran off with every penny.

First we need to know whether the folks affected (what's left of them) want to do the drawing or a discount.

Red, if you wanna run this thing, I can arrange it on this side. PM me.

I personally don't have time to run a group buy. I mean shipping 10 boxes is fine as i have access to packing material so this wont end up costing me anything. But I'm not really into shipping more then that, collecting money etc.

How about I add a form entry for "Would you rather have a raffle or a discounted GB." And if we get enough votes then ogranize as i assume he wants to provide discounts to the victims only rather than giving tons of new orders a free ride. I think having the information from the victims about what was lost exactly is beneficial also in multiple ways. I'll be home in a few hours to post the finished form.

That is fine (if we get enough votes to start a discount group buy for the victims), and I encourage you to take charge and be the funds collector if that happens. The form will determine whether or not I will ship freebies or we find a group buy leader.

I believe his attempt at submitting a mass complaint with everybody's details to Paypal was unsuccessful. I think the only recourse left would be the local authorities or maybe the IRS, and I think since swimmingbird isn't in the US there's not much he can do on those fronts.

Some people had said they didn't want to report it to the IRS and risk opening a can of worms in regards to groupbuys in general, and I think the local authorities idea fizzled out.

I think getting a discount is better than free raffle 10 boards.
So all ivan victim from this gb can atleast get the board or maybe sell his board/spot
I dont know how many ppl join this gb. But if we go with raffle 10 free board it will hurt the other buyers who not get the raffle.
Btw im not joined this gb just give some advice.

Ok, dear people that were not involved in this group buy: Your opinions dont matter.

The raffle vs vote will be decided by the form by the people that were ripped of by Ivan, not by your post here. I know that you people that wernt involved want a new group buy so you can get an RS84 kit, but that just isnt going to happen unless there are enough votes by the victims to consider it, sorry.

Ill tell you right now, there is only 1 vote for the discounted buy. 99% of the votes are for the raffle.

In all reality, having another group buy will drag this on for months and months, as I am not the person that will be running the GB. Pricing/logistics/shipping/discounts/finding a GB leader will all be a pain in the ass.

Feel free to email him and ask though. His email is up a few posts.

Damn, I fell off for awhile after getting shafted on this and the Miami group buy.  Just came back to check if there was an update and didn't get to fill out the google doc.   :(

He did allready, and depending on what 悬壶济世 wants to do I may or may not be able to add his entry in, I just have no news yet. I submitted the results to 悬壶济世 last week and the turnout was pretty low for this so im not real sure whats going to happen, all up to him though.

Completely understand, will be coming around again to check for updates.  悬壶济世 is a standup guy for even giving the community this opportunity.  I just want a 75% board :(

Fixed.

Just got an update from him, it sounds like he is still going to do this for us! All of the kits will be silver though (we will take what we can get and not whine). Hes apparently super busy lately so there is no ETA on when this will happen, just know that he hasnt forgotten about us and I will keep you guys updated.

Ivan took off with your money. The RS designer offered to provide some replacement kits for free but you didnt fill out the form in time (was up for a month).

Basically, Ivan scammed you and you probably wont get a kit. We are still waiting to hear from the RS designer on what is going to happen next.

Edit: I will probably re-open the form for the slowpokes once i know whats going on with the replacement kits that he is provdidng for free. Check this thread at least once a week untill something happens.

Ask Sherryton since he sold the kits, he should have a line of communication.

Good luck & I'm sure those involved appreciate your effort :)
