[IC] would there be interest in a PBT/Dye-sub DCS set from SP?
« on: Mon, 26 January 2015, 02:03:46 »
It's some time now that I wanted to design a nice set for a DCS set in PBT with dye-sub'd legends.

I know people are not huge fans of SP's DCS that is not double shot, though. I've seen some DCS/PBT, they actually look fine to me, but I understand you like it thick.

The pros of going SP would be:
- huge color selection
- low MOQ
- huge keycap sizes selection, possibility to cover uncommon and weird keyboards
- spacebar available in PBT

The cons are of course:
- not the thickest PBT keycaps on the planet
- warping is "hit or miss"

I would take care of the GB personally this time, so not going through PMK, and I'll take care of QC.

If you are interested, in the coming days I'll post some mock-ups. The legends will be exquisite of course, hand designed one by one :)

I'd love to see something with some more subtle color palettes than we see from most double shot sets. I remember seeing someone's caps from a Triumph Adler typewriter and thinking that the shades of blue were very appealing.

I'm a fan of DCS; there are already so many DSA buys.

I didn't know PS has PBT until I saw your post... How thick is their PBT keycap ? I have your Skull Squadron set and it was one of my favorite sets, until it got shined. :(

shined! already?! WOW....

the PBT keys are basically the same thickness of the ABS ones sans the double shot layer :)

Yeah, on L-shift, spacebar and WASD. I'm a hard FPS gamer.  :p
It got shine after about a year, I guess PBT is my best choice.

Depending on what the set looks like, I'd be down for a DCS set.
I've loved most of your designs so far, and I'm sure I love this one too

Interested if it has an interesting theme/color and the price is relatively low, maybe ~$50-80 range?

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

the idea would be to do a "simple" space-cadet theme, in DCS+PBT. The legends are not final and there will be a hell lot of options.

like I said, international kits are more problematic on DCS (than on DSA), but at least DE/FR/nordic/IT/UK will be there.

Out of curiosity, does this have something to do with the different profiles on the rows?

I wonder why do not use Cherry fonts, are there legal issues that banned their use? They go pretty well with DCS, and the PBT space bar in DCS may interest many.

You can offer the space bar in matching black, gray and beige colors that may interest many to match with existing DCS sets.

yep. more keys are needed on DCS.

EU orders are shipped from Italy.

The font will be carefully picked and surely more attractive than Cherry :)

Offering spacebars in various colors is definitely a good idea.

Space bars in 6.5u, 7u, and other non standard sizes may be offered as well, considering they will be PBT there should be some interest.

i like the design sir, and really wanna see more buys like this, for me i think im just gonna have to avoid sp dyesub pbt until we see more consistent results from them

that being said, we cant see those results until we support more stuff like this, and you are certainly the person to support on sets like this specifically

you already know how I think about it :)

DCS is even more difficult to dyesub compared to DSA, so even more challenging for SP... but maybe with a stricter QC...

Awesome, I only need standard 6.25 but I think the GB would have more appeal with those extra PBT bars.

The choice of color could work, but I'm having a hard time imagining it on real caps.
But I've been looking for a pbt dyesub set with nordic letters so it'll probably be good :)

Can SP even do space bars in PBT DCS now?  Last I knew they were only doing PBT space bars in DSA profile.

this would be a very approximate representation, the blue is actually a bit darker.

Yeah they can, and they don't look bad either.  The 6.25 that I got doesn't have any warping issues.  However if they have to produce a large quantity of them it might be a different story.

I like the color scheme.  Any chance of Cherry legends, or did you have something else in mind?

Would you ever consider doing a Olivetti dye-sub DCS set?
