I would like to introduce you to GMK Modern Dolch!

Inspiration
Many of you have probably owned one or more variants of the timeless Dolch colour-way. I always loved the contrasted yet simple look between the 2 greys, however I always felt like something was a bit off: the colours just seemed a bit too warm and “muddy” to me. I really wanted to give a more muted and modern look to this timeless colourway, which is where Modern Dolch comes in. It keeps the simplistic look and the beautiful contrast between the 2 greys, but cooling the colours down and adding some fresh accents. The result is a very versatile set, which goes well with simple silver/black boards, vibrant teal boards and anything in between.

Design
Because of GMK's limited offering of stock colours, this set will be offering all custom colours. We're in the process of ordering plastic Pantone samples for this, instead of going the standard way of using a paper book. This way we can make sure the colour matching is perfect! We will be offering 3 items in this group buy. First is the base kit, the bread and butter of any GMK set. It will support a plethora of layouts combined with some fresh accents mentioned earlier! We're also excited to offer an icon mod kit, for those who want to complete the simplistic look of this set even more (finally no more R3 all text “Control” key in the midst of icons :thumb:). We also have one more special item in store, a cherry on top if you will! It’ll look awesome and made out of aluminium, more to follow later! ;) ;)
I'm aiming to get the same proxies as 9009 going for this, meaning nobody will be stuck with those nasty €20 administration fees on import! Dixiemech for the US and Mykeyboard for the EU are confirmed, and I will be in touch with Zfrontier for China and Cocobrais for Korea!

I have no doubt about this set hitting big once it goes live and should you decide to include the spacebar kit, I don't think it will have any problem hitting the MOQ. I personally would love to see a spacebar kit for my other 60% split space layout :D

I'd replace the dotted numpad five with a numpad 5 with bars (I can't use keys with nipple, they hurt me). I'd remove the extra enter keys, I'd include just the grey enters. Those enters cost about 2 usd each, so you'll save about $12.
Price right now can be low, very low.
Right now originative is running white on black and is costs only $135, so you'll be able to run lower than that since originative isn't the cheapest place usually :-D

I mean just for the R3 Control key, since the complete icon mods is for bottom row and R3 Control is in the middle where the keys around it is already in icon.

I'm not going to remove the accent enters, since people do like those a fair bit (me included). I don't think the comparison in price to BOW makes much sense at all. That kit is a lot smaller (cause cause no accents, no double \| and tilde, no 2u shift, ...) and it uses only 2 colours both of which are stock GMK compared to the 4 custom colours and 1 stock colour MD will use which def adds up to the price. We're looking at a $145 price point right now :)

Call it something else. Maybe Granite. But, it is not a Dolch set. Its current name just add to the confusion. There have been several Dolch versions, already.
Considering DSA Granite and the fact that this very much is inspired by Dolch I would think GMK Granite would make for a much more confusing name than Modern Dolch :D It's a more modern version of Dolch, so the name just made sense :)

$145 is a competitive price imo. Very nice job haha! The accent keys really add a touch of freshness to the set so I don't see why we should remove those, maybe have them as an add-on set for those who does not want them and keep the cost of the base kit down? Otherwise, I'd love to see an addition of a spacebar kit and everything should be perfect :)

N9 is quite a bit darker than the current mod colour and 2B quite a bit warmer. Would completely change the set's look, and it wouldn't be what I'm aiming for with the colours :)

I'm convinced that janglad has some kind of reality enhancement augment reverse engineered from a spaceship which crashed in his back yard. He uses it to make these ridiculous renders.
A combination of this and wayyyyy too many hours looking at 3d keyboards in CAD software :) I'm glad you like them! Looking through albums of renders I have done for other people's keysets I can definitely notice progress, which is quite cool to see :D

Would the removal of ISO enter keys help reduce the cost of the base kit further? Could they be separated into an international kit instead?
Removing the ISO key would reduce cost minimally for ANSI users and increase it quite a bit for ISO users. It's also very possible that the ISO kit wouldn't hit 150 MOQ, making some people cancel their base kits which could screw with price drops for everyone in the whole GB :-[ Also I'm just not a fan of splitting up a GMK set too much since I like how easy it is to get a kit that covers everything on the aftermarket VS SA where you need to hunt down a gazillion kits. Either way, I don't think splitting it is the best idea unless you're selling through MassDrop :D

I think that’s what’s so great about it. It’s a subtle shift in warmth and vibrancy but it makes a huge difference in how it’s perceived. At least that’s my opinion.

Posted this on Reddit, but figured I post here also. Perhaps this changes the flavor of the set to much. I would love to have this keyset with the Tiffany blue Enter color as the legends for the Mods/Alpha's. I think it give it just a bit of color and make it seriously pop off the page. I am not sure if that changes the spirit of the IC to much thought. The white just feels kinda off to me. Perhaps its even to basic for a new updated modern version of Dolch.
Please no :) On top of it being basically a reversed version of Ocean Dolch I feel like the accent keys are enough color for those that want it.

Of course it wouldn't be the same since you also would need to pay €20 administration fees. Without that it would tho and IIRC there are some countries where you can forego those by picking up the package at customs. Either way, like I mentioned in the OG post Mykeyboard.eu will be the EU proxy for this set.

Its great to see the classic colors approach to GMK come back by members in the community. Feels like old times. Great job and please pack the base kit (I've never quite understood the idea of trimming kits to bare compatibility just because "not everyone needs that key", IMO kits should be complete because its near impossible to ever run a fix kit for the extras after the buy is over).
It's really hard to decide between trimming down on the number of keys to reduce price vs more compatibility with a higher price. But looking at the current render, i'm happy with this!

Posted this on Reddit, but figured I post here also. Perhaps this changes the flavor of the set to much. I would love to have this keyset with the Tiffany blue Enter color as the legends for the Mods/Alpha's. I think it give it just a bit of color and make it seriously pop off the page. I am not sure if that changes the spirit of the IC to much thought. The white just feels kinda off to me. Perhaps its even to basic for a new updated modern version of Dolch.

Thanks alot 😁. Mainly 2U shift and 1.75U Ctrl. I would love to see an option for a spacebar kit. Such addition allows endless possibility of configurations for split space layouts. Other than that, my wallet is ready 🙏🙏

Well it was really great to see blue accents on the old dolch. While it's true that this is the Modern version of Dolch that we're ICing for, what I'm trying to say is the warmer and more "pastel" look of the accent keys (I'm sorry if the word use is wrong here) just don't look so "right" on a darker color set like this. I really want this myself, R0 as well but I don't think a kit would hit MOQ. Putting them in the base kit would make it too expensive (and from what I remember from the GMK Carbon R2 IC not all people are happy to use R0-5) and doing a separate kit would probably cost a pretty penny too :|

I have also updated the kit design to make it more uniform. Numpad legends have been changed (same as ones used on GMK Burgundy), Alt GR has been turned into Alt. I have also made the Num Lock keys and Scoll Lock keys into "Num" and "Scroll" to be more in line of the rest of the 1u mod legends which are all single line :)

We kept it with 9009 because of the vintage factor but doing it here would be contradictory to the point of the set. Having 2 normal Alt keys does look cleaner IMO :)

Nope, split space is not _that_ popular. Adding 4 more spacebar to the kit would make it a lot more expensive for a lot of people and only a small % would use them. I feel like just having them in standard colours is a nice balance :)

Changing the base to text mods would make this an entirely different set. The icon mods with text bottom row has been used on a lot of sets in the past. If you are looking for all text, you can get the monochrome set from GMK Oblivion.

Yeah it increased a tad from 9009 because of custom colours but I like to think it's still a very nice price, especially next to recent sets like Triumph Adler and Terminal which were $169 IIRC :D

- Any chance you can add a mac command key to the icon mods ? I asked the same question on carbon IC, got told no. I think that would really make it complete - it does have the mac alt already ?

i'm sure you guys in NA will have a different vendor. zF is just for Asia/EU/AU most of the time. Free shipping is good but the price will also be higher since they have to pay shipping going to CN in the first place heh

Dixiemech will handle the US, Mykeyboard the EU, Dailyclack Oceania and Zfrontier all of Asia! The GB will be live from August 25th until September 15th, GMK is taking a little holiday right now so I haven't gotten an official reply yet, but we're expecting this to ship in 3-4 months if not sooner ;)
I'm also very excited to announce a collaboration with RAMA with a one of a kind keycap. Inspired by the logo on the original Dolch PAC keyboard, it's a 2 piece cap made out of combination of CNC milled aluminium and an enamel fill! We will be offering it in grey + cyan infill and grey + red colourways, all matched to the Modern Dolch set of course!! We're still waiting on renders of red option, but here's one of the gray + cyan option! This has to be the coolest cap RAMA has made by far, and that's saying sommething :D

I wanna thank everyone for the support so far, ranging from people leaving a simple upvote on RMK posts to those who filled in the Google form with suggestions and of course the amazing vendors I'm working on this with! I know it's a high bar to set, but I really hope this will turn out as successful as 9009. This is a set I've always wanted to see happen and I can't wait to see it IRL!!!

Yes, vendors will either buy enough for MOQ or the GB will be cancelled and you'll receive a refund if applicable.
