New 104 Keysets from EK
« on: Thu, 15 August 2013, 07:18:03 »
http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=special&filter=tampo

Looks like they're nothing too special, but I actually really like these.

They're pad-printed ABS, but I love the colors they come in. I'll probably buy a set or 2.

These actually look quite nice, but EK's shipping rates are ridiculous.

The legends are "tampo" legends. Whatever that means. I don't know if that helps you.

Also, the colors look to be the same colors EK has been using, so I'd assume they're from whoever EK normally buys from (GMK?).

Not sure, the purple looks off...Maybe Tampo is another OEM for keycaps? I know their other MX stuff is GMK but these caps colors don't look the same as the GMK ones. Specifically the Blue and Purple looks off.

So maybe they're GMK caps and then they're sent to Tampo for printing?

doubt that....they are too cheap even for that.  ;D

also the caps looking fairly rounded (OEM) instead of the sharp edges of the GMK caps.

My problem with EK is that they say universal, but then it doesn't fit the FC700R or the FC660M when it comes to the right shift key and the spacebar.

I guess you'd fall into the "Likely incompatibilities exist only for the space bar which only allows for 80mm and 100mm wide mounts. Spacebar is not compatible with Leopold FC500 series!" area.

I fail to see why this would even be a possibility without them mentioning it (and upcharging like EK always does).

Consider yourself lucky!  Shipping to Australia: $65.56

I was thinking of getting some, but no way!  Not for $85.56 USD

Could be a mistake--I'd contact EK and inquire about it.  Perhaps somewhat higher shipping because of the size and weight of the boxes these caps come with.

Makes me think that the reusable transparent packaging is a largeish plastic display case, and the size probably causes the extcessive cost.

Actually for that shipping cost I can pretty much get a keyboard shipped over here.

Too many nice looking keycaps -- too few keyboards!  Otherwise, I like the look of the light blue set very much.

I was really torn between that set or the lavender.  Ended up going with the latter.  When they get here, I'll take some comparison pics and try to provide some more detail on the caps as best I can.

No one has said anything about the profile of these caps.  Brian sells only Leoplod MX keyboards.  Are these Leopold, Cherry, or standard height?

It states "Cherry MX keycap sets" on EK, but this is often used as a general term.  On the other hand he states, "Authentic Cherry Blue Alt Set (Double-Shot)," and "Original Cherry Profile Double-Shot 1.25 keywidth Alt keycap" for other "modifier" keycaps on the same page.

If you look at the height of the keycaps, they look too tall to be Cherry profile, so probably OEM.

We'll know as soon as EK ships 'em out to me.  I live about 30 mins away from them so it should be pretty damn fast.  Last time, it took a day.

We will be expecting detailed photos ;)

Just wanted to touch base, as I've been chatting on the other thread regarding these keycaps. I emailed them and got a response from Brian down at EK. I had mentioned that there were a number of GHers looking for these keysets, but blank, like myself.

---

Hey guys, I actually just got an email back from Brian at elitekeyboards. He says that there are blanks in these colors on the way. The majority of the shipment was sent by boat, to include all of the colored blanks, with a limited number of the colored printed sets, and black blank sets, sent by air. He wanted to get them debuted as quickly as possible, since they're 8 months overdue. But given another 3 or 4 weeks, the same colors will be available in blanks.

Also, he mentioned the reusable keycap packaging, saying that they'd recently patented it. He was very excited because this is the packaging debut as well, and expects the packaging to be more popular than the keycaps that come in it.

He was very receptive and thankful for the feedback I sent them, and I have to say that this interaction with them has led me to decide that they'll be getting my business. Even if I was on the fence about the blanks (which I wasn't, assuming they were an option) this has definitely made my decision for me.

Now I don't know which thread to post in, so I'll post here.

EK has been great to me for the few things I ordered.  Glad to see the trend is continuing :)

The only problem with these sets is the $65 shipping cost to Australia, probably because of the size of the keycap box.

Last order I had with them seems like it was 2-3 days to ship then 2-3 days to get it so almost a week total.

I'm curious to see this keycap box.

If that is what pushes shipping cost up to $65 I might try to find a way to get a set of these without the box.

That's not the point - if it is the case that pushes the shipping price up to $65, then I'll gladly do without the case and a more reasonable ($15?) shipping price for just the keycaps.

I was thinking of a full set of the green ones, but $65 shipping - nah.  But then if it is hte keycap case that pushes shipping price up, maybe I can get a set without the case.  But I want to see case first, and get an indication of what the keycaps are like, hence waiting for someone else who has ordered them to receive theirs and review them.

I can probably hook you up, but I gotta check on shipping to Australia.....But surely I can do it cheaper than what they are charging. Especially if I get to keep the case!! I should have these by the end of the week.

The legends are "tampo" legends. Whatever that means. I don't know if that helps you.

Not sure, the purple looks off...Maybe Tampo is another OEM for keycaps?

"Tampo printing" is just another name for "pad printing". It's the process used for nearly all mass-market keyboards other than perhaps Apple's (lasered).

tampo(n) is the printing process...named after the company....http://www.tampoprint.de/en/index_en.html
I'm quite certain the company is named after the process. In many languages, "tampon" just means "pad".

So maybe they're GMK caps and then they're sent to Tampo for printing?
Given how common pad printing is, no need to send them to a specific German company.

I'm confused why EK says "Tampo pad printed legends offer better durability than lasered or silkscreen printed legends".  I thought lasered legends were longer-lasting vs. pad printing.  As far as I knew, pad printing was pretty much bottom-of-the-barrel in terms of legend durability.

Caps incoming today.  They're currently on the Fedex truck for delivery.  :thumb:  After they get here, I'll take some pics, do some comparisons, and throw 'em on a board before posting a thread.

Great!  I think a few people are looking forward to seeing what they are actually like.

What colour/s did you get?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Got green and red, wish they had whites, which is what I really wanted.
I'll give out a review when I receive them..

Not that crazy yet! I'll do some white, black and red first...
Then I'll see where the green goes or just by itself...
