Top is an '87, stock.  Middle is a '91, floss-modded and in need of some repairs.  Bottom is a '93, grease-modded.  The last one was a basket case that needed a lot of work.  Feel like I'm talking about cars.

Weeee....

I've owned many ModelM keyboards over the years, but due to moving have had to let some go.

Currently, I own three including this beauty which I purchased for $10 in 2002. It was in an original box (but not necessarily its own), but previously used. However, it was protected by a clear plastic cover. Underneath, it was absolutely pristine. Unfortunately, I'm a slob, so it is no longer quite as mint as it once was.

Is that a genuine industrial SSK?   From what I've been told and digging around seems a bunch of people converted other keyboards into industrial SSKs with shells bought from Unicomp.

Can you take a picture of the back label if it is?

Post by: snoopy on Fri, 08 February 2013, 13:43:53
It's a X61s. But I only use it to do some stuff with BackTrack.

I normally use a X220 in a docking station with two Eizo attached.

I also have a X41, 240, 240X and some that I currently don't remeber... :)
I initially came here because somebody posted a link to geekhack in a german ThinkPad-forum

Yesterday I pulled one of the dirty space savers, that I bought some time ago, out of the closet.

Took me nearly 3 hours to clean it...

It started with this (I bought it exactly like that):

And ended with this:

I added a brand new set of ssk keycaps from unicomp, a rgb-kit and a HO (a good board needs a HO).  ;D I wanted the classic style.

It doesn't smell anymore (it really smelled like .... I don't know) and now looks fresh and clean. I think it was worth the time.

typed on my fresh ssk  ;)

Great job Snoop. I have a few questions:

What's the date?
Were the keycaps from Unicomp 1 piece or 2?
My SSKs have black barrel plates (or whatever they are called), can you tell by the color when the approximate manufacture date was? Mine are both from Dec of 1987.

This one is from 91. The keycapset is 2-piece (except some modifiers). Afaik they usually deliver 2-piece keycaps, except when you order blank blacks; these are one-piece.

I also have a 93 with a black barrel plate. Also a 88, but forgot which color this one has, its somewhere in a box. I can check for exact dates tomorrow if you want.

I suppose I should add one of my SSKs here.  I somehow managed to acquire three of them before realising how valuable they are: and in that regard, as much as I'd like to spray or dye one of them black (assuming I could find white-on-black keycaps to match), maybe I won't.  Apologies for it being a little grubby, I guess that's a side-effect of someone who often eats at her computer.

My planned "mod", inasmuch as it is one, is to get hold of some keycaps from Unicomp to UKify it.

Edit: forgot to mention, they're dated 2004: which may not be as desirable a vintage as some, but I love them. :)

Yeah, I'm glad I managed to snag myself some of them: my clumsy fingers aren't so good with the smaller return keys. :D

My order for UK keys is on its way now; I half wish I'd ordered some interestingly-coloured keys at the same time, but considering my dubious aesthetics, in the interests of taste, it's probably best that I didn't!

The longer I look at that iso board, the more I wish I already had that bolt mod and iso conversion done to one of my ssks

I'm new to GH but have been using either an M4 or SSK for years now.

Snoopy said hi to me in the New Members forum and suggested I post here. So here we go.

The first one I got in 1997 at a local computer store for $12. I took it home to try it out to see if I'd like it. Obviously I did. The store had two but when I went back the other one was gone.  :-[

The others I found on either E-bay or a local recycler in the early/mid 2000's.

As for typing on them, I love it. But they are noisy and I have become pretty heavy handed.

I used the M4 for a few years too. I assume its mechanical also except instead of a buckling spring it has "rubber springs". I can post a pic if anyone's interested.

I took one out of storage the other day and found that there were a lot of rattling bits in the case. So I hooked it up and sure enough the top plate wasn't tight to the metal plate and it was causing some of the hammers to misfire. So I'm in the process of doing the bolt mod. Thanks ripster and GH wiki.  :thumb:

The reason I found you guys was I got interested in seeing if there are any other mechanical KBs out there that are worthy. I didn't know there was such interest. Several years ago all I could find was Unicomp and a couple others that used what I now know as Alps switches.

I'm presently test driving a Matias Quiet Click TKL (mostly because I like its form factor) I also have a CM Storm QuickFire with MX browns on the way. I also picked up a Siig Minitouch with Alps white (simplified? XM?) which I'm typing on now. I like the form factor but the ISO layout with the big enter key sticks if you don't hit it just right.

Anyone know if Matias switches can be used to replace the standard Alps switches?

Love seeing all the old SSKs here. You guys are so creative with all the colored keycaps! Hey Snoopy, whats a red clack?

And also, do we always have to use the verification letters (captcha) when we post? Pretty annoying.

Nice boards, it's cool that you have a original box for them and that they have those additional printings on the keycaps (and also that red control key is very uncommon).

Hey Snoopy, whats a red clack?

this thread should help: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39794.0
Basically clacks are little keycap shaped plastic skulls that are available for different switch types. I love to use one of them as little highlight on esc position. They are hand-made by a geekhack member and are available in many different colors.
Like this one:

About that verification: I think it's only for new members. It will stop on a certain post count. But I'm not sure when.

My question is how do I turn on/off the numpad functions? My computer seems to boot into the numpad sometimes. And for now I've been unplugging the re-plugging the board, but surely there's a key or combination to press to turn the numpad functions on or off...

Your scroll key is supposed to have NumLk on it, like the picture below...

Ah, that makes sense. I replaced all the keys with the two-piece stems + caps from another board I had lying around. I like the feel of the two piece keys better, but the tkl-specific printings obviously weren't on the full sized keycaps. Thankee

(I will get a better photo soon I promise)

It was in a bit of a sorry state when it arrived (a good 10 or 12 keys didn't work and it was fairly filthy) but a good bolt mod, clean and floss mod later (plus the addition of some RGB caps and a GH sticker to hide a little damage on the case) and it looks pretty darn good :D

I received this beauty today: it's the bottom one, a '91 vintage IBM 1391472 SSK, next to my other SSK, an Unicomp ISO layout UNI04C6.

Sorry for the bad quality of the photo that doesn't do it justice.
It's got a precise and consistent feel through all the keys - really superb work of love by phosphorglow. This is #5 of a set of 6 SSK that were pretty badly beaten up and are now back to life. Really an amazing work!

Right, it's the red one: http://phosphorglow.net/2014/05/21/grungy-rusted-and-broken-ssk-no-5-december-4th-1991/

There were 4 of them left when I ordered it, and phosphorglow suggested this one considering my preferences and style of typing...
I have to say he totally nailed it, the more I type on it, the more I love it. I'm not new to Model M's (I have 5 more) but this is definitely the best overall.

I just posted this in keyboards, but I'll post it here anyway.

So my father does some electronics recycling on the side and a while back he was given a box of old keyboard, all junk, or so I thought. I pawed through them and found a model m. I knew they were kind of popular and checked eBay real quick for "IBM Model M". I saw them going for like $50 and thought "oh, cool. I'll set that aside".

Move forward a few months to a couple days ago and I decided to look a bit more and did an eBay search on "IBM 1391472". There was nothing. So I checked completed listing and couldn't believe it. The lowest one had sold for was $215!

Now I can't make up my mind... Sell it and pay rent, or rock it? I have a black widow ultimate with mx cherry blue switches and I am completely satisfied with it. But I still think I am at least going to have phosphorglow refurb it. I'm thinking just some RGB keys, maybe a panic button (I know, real original...). Then I'll either rock it, it sell it, but it's an investment either way. Now on to some pictures! (nothing too pretty though)

How do you like the LEDs? I thought it was an awesome idea. I told him to go with the greens because I thought it suited the board (as most keyboards, specially old ones, used green indicator LEDs). He wont even have my board in his hands for a few days, so I may change my mind, but I think I'll stay with the greens.

It's like a brand new board now though! Completely flawless! He even had to get new circuit membranes printed for this batch of SSKs. He said that they were by far the worst he's restored but that didn't stop him!

Just those loose rusty springs rattling around inside the case would be enough to put most people off (me included!)

Do you mind if I ask what the restoration cost?  Not an exact figure, if you'f prefer not to tell, just a vague idea - $100, $200?

Here's the link to the full restoration to give you an idea of the magnitude of the transformation: http://phosphorglow.net/2014/05/21/grungy-rusted-and-broken-ssk-no-2-april-10th-1991/
He even painted the barrel plate purple while he was at it!

That's an absolutely amazing restoration!

So many people would have just thrown a keyboard like that out, but no, this one was restored, with stunning results!

And now it will likely last for another 20+ years!

I was absolutely blown away by the transformation! Maxx sent me some before pictures while he was in the process of restoring it and they had me a little worried if it would turn out or not.

He has his rates on his site. I don't know if he charged him any more. But he offer the restore service for $55 Which I think is VERY reasonable if you see his work and watch that youtube video showing a time lapse of a restoration. Its an extra $15 I think to paint the board and $25 for the LED mod. But it may have been extra for him considering the extent of the restoration.

I bought the fully restored keyboard from Maxx for $250 (I didn't supply the original keyboard, Maxx got this one and five others from a recycler all in this terrible condition). For the amount of work he put into it I think the price was extremely reasonable.

yeah and man I'm loving it. I was thinking of trading it for a different TKL + some cash because $$ is VERY tight at the moment, but the more I type on it the more I love it. I doubt I'll be getting rid of it. I'm thinking maybe giving it a plasti-dip in grey for the faux industrial look (but not perminent) with a set of keycaps and badge from an M13.

Looks great.  I think the colored modifiers work better on the SSK than a fullsize.

Regarding the industrial look, a badge from an M13 won't fit without some trimming, and I'm not certain if the amount of trimming required would cut into the letters.

Most people call it the rubber mat, but Unicomp calls it the "blanket"

If you buy a new one from them ($10) it is white latex and very thin.

How do you propose to change a spring when it looks like this:

It does pull off pretty easily of the plastic base. However, it is really hard to get a spring back on.

Also a couple more shots:

I've always just pulled and wiggled it off the stem. It's a little tricky but you can do it without messing up the spring.

Clickykeyboards sells replacement caps but I think I recall their intl shipping prices being hugely inflated. I can send you a Q for the cost of shipping if you want.

I chopped a fullsize into an "SSK" so my industrial SSK can sit on the shelf and not get any wear/damage (like you could ever tell, but still).

And there's something about typing on a board that you made/customized to such an extent.

I don't see a reason to acquire an SSK as a daily driver if you've already chopped down a full.  It's the same experience minus the inset numpad which I never use, and a little more width at the top of the bezel.

Awesome! Did you really cut that plate by hand? I would have had to use a sawzall or bansaw.

I don't have them. That is a radial arm saw that I am resting on, which cut the plastic pieces nicely, but I don't have a metal blade. It was a pain to do it by hand, it probably took 10 minutes (but my blade might have been dull).

That turned out really well.

Actually, the front right corner (arrow keys) does not fit properly.

I would strongly advise against using a 42H controller and membranes for this project because of the way they are almost integral and have to be folded too tight.

If I could figure out how to solder to traces on membranes I could make it fit a lot better.

Ah, ok. I couldn't tell from the picture. Is that specific to the 42H? I have no knowledge of Model M internals, would it work with an 82G or similar controller w/ a fixed but coiled cable, or is a 1391401 controller the only answer?
Title: Re: Model M space saver club
Post by: fohat.digs on Thu, 23 October 2014, 07:41:05
Is that specific to the 42H?

I used to have a photo of a chronological series of Model M controllers (probably from Ripster, as many things like this were) and there were as many as a dozen of them. But I can't find it now.

This 42H has the controller connected without any "slack" so that I can't move it to a more out-of-the-way place without cutting it. It also has a "pressure" connector that is very difficult to keep tight.

Where can one find a nice Del key like that? Or any other special keycaps like that? I know unicomp can custom order some, but wondering if you got it elsewhere.

Unicomp has lots of stuff, including almost any 1x cap in almost any color. The Escape might have been $2-3

Today I received my first IBM Model M Space Saving Keyboard. I got it from elecplus via the DT forum. I got bumped up the list luckily. The 3-4 person above me did not confirm and after waiting 48 hours, one of these rare keyboards went to me. These pictures doesn't really show how great the board is, it needs to be seen and experienced in real life.

The effort to repair/save one of these things sometimes is ridiculous. I couldn't imagine getting my hands on something this nice from the start.
Beautiful board. I hope one day to have this opportunity.

Do you have any plans as far as colored mods or artisan caps? Maybe a custom cable?

I love the RGBs on it. At first I didn't think I would, but they've really grown on me. My only problem with them is that for some reason, the 2 shift keys are slightly different shades of green. At first I thought this was a one-time error, but after looking at other peoples' pictures of the RGB modifiers from Unicomp, it seems like it's a problem with all of the ones from Unicomp, or at least their most recent batches. I've gotten used to them, though, and it's pretty hard to tell the color difference when they are on opposite sides of the keyboard.

Do you guys have any suggestions for cleaning the shell? Mine isn't exactly pure white (you can see the photos), and I was wondering if there is an additional layer of dirt that could be removed with peroxide or something?

It's not supposed to be pure white.  It's more of a beige.

I've cleaned M cases in a dishwasher, but I've also just washed them in the sink with a clean sponge and liquid dishwashing soap.  You could let it soak in soapy water, etc.

Maybe it's because they are using the brilliant white keys from Unicomp on it?  Been there done that.  The only thing is to actually paint the shell a glossy brilliant white to match I suppose.
Otherwise it just looks wrong.  I wound up giving the set to another GH member.

What Snowdog said.

There's a rectangular depressed section that the Lexmark sticker is set into.

I love the 1392595.  It's a very cool keyboard.  Converted mine and use it regularly on one of my machines.  It feels very good too.  One of my favorites.

My second SSK!  This one from Cindy.

[attachimg=1]

Unfortunately it has some issues, like a bit missing from the front corner of the case, one of the legs is missing, the Enter and left Shift keys stick down most of hte itme, the right Shift sticks down some of the time, and it is filthy

A nice little project for me one day soon ...

Thanks guys!

Yes, the latest batch that Cindy got from a school.

It was very well packaged, and the box did not show any damage, so I believe it is just war wounds from its previous life.

I have not tried plugging it in yet, I suppose I should to make sure that it works before I start cleaning it.

My problem is postage.  Pretty much every SSK I've seen comes from the US, and postage adds around $60 to the price.  Then convert that to Aussie dollars and the price goes up by another 20% or something.

At least I have my Lexmark SSK (on which this was typed)!

One weird thing about my new SSK, it's apparently had some of its keycaps replaced.  One Alt key has a green legend and one black. Many of the keys are single-piece while others have the removable caps. On an '87 board, which ones would be original, one-piece or two-piece?

The few keycaps I've removed from my latest SSK are all one piece.  And look complete and SSKish enough.

Please be sure to get the set on the Pearl/Pebble.  The brilliant white set looks wrong, and they don't have a long brilliant white spacebar either.  I am not even sure if they have the special keys for the SSK in those sets.  You might have to custom order it that way.  Never hurts to ask!
Good luck!

By special keys are you referring to the smaller legends for the number layer? Or are there other keys I'm not thinking of that an SSK has that aren't on a full-size Model M?

Yes, I am referring to the secondary numpad /scroll lock legends, as well as the NumLk/ScrLk key.
number row: 7 8 9 - =
       tab row: U I O
   home row:  J K L :
     shift row:  M . /

Those keys have the secondary numpad and on the front have the scroll indicators.
If it's not necessary, you can go for that.  The only other key is the NumLk/ScrLk.
I think that's the 16 keys that are different.  Correct me if I forgot something.

Oh, and the Alt keys are green.

I like the idea of blue legends. I don't use numlock or the number layer anyway. I just wanted to make sure you weren't referring to anything more major than that.

Oh, and I'm definitely going with the pearl/pebble color.

I got one of these like Rowdy's, only much much worse, and yes, Cindy gave me a good price. I should have taken a "before" photo because it was really really dirty and missing numerous keys, including spacebar. Fortunately, all the "special SSK" keys were there. Most keys were 1-piece, although the "J" was 2-piece even though it had the SSK sub-legends and matched its neighbors (and also "F"). I was disappointed when one of the missing keys was Left Shift, because those are always in short supply, but I happened to have a spare in my box after all.

The caps were so dirty that even after soaking in hot water with powdered laundry detergent and Oxi- for half an hour, I still had to physically scrub them. I don't think I have ever had to do that before, except on a rare random single key.

I was able to remove 98% of the permanent marker "Part of RISD 31346" (Rhode Island School District?) by 3 rounds of: (1) wiping hard with alcohol, (2) using my electric eraser with soft white strip, and (3) scrubbing with a plastic kitchen scrubber with the same strong detergent/oxi- combo.

I also tried the (occasionally effective) technique of going directly over the permanent marker with "dry erase" marker and then taking them both off together with a dry rag. That probably works best when the mark is fresh, and these were probably years (decades) old.

A bolt mod was in order (there was residue everywhere and the membranes were partially stuck together) and I will have it back together today. Although mine is a September 1987, I think that it has the "mid-weight" plate and not the heavy one.

Anyway, for an investment of just over $200 to Cindy and some dirty work, I now have 2 beautiful working SSKs!

Excellent, fohat.  Congratulations :)

Mine has also cleaned up pretty well, although I just used a kitchen scourer on the writing on the bottom of the case, which has almost completely gone now.

I still need to fix the sticking Shift and Enter though.  Maybe the barrel inserts need a slight alignment adjustment?

I bought one from Cindy too and paid someone else to refurbish it. I'm pretty nervous at the cost of shipping that as well. At least, the cost is spread over a few months.

I have an option to mod the cable to USB-micro USB for a small cost. I've been thinking about it. Modding that would make the SSK modern. I hate those permanent cables, especially the curly ones. Any thoughts on this?

I love permanent cables but despise coiled cables.

Micro-USB is probably a better choice than the more common mini-USB.

Yes it can be done.  I was going to make a picture, but I think you can do this without one.  All you need is a narrow screwdriver.  Gently nudge the pin on the key in the direction of the hole.  Insert the key again, adjust again if necessary.  You can use a Q-Tip to make sure the hole is clean too.  With a little persistence, you will get it.
And be gentle.  Don't break the pin.

I actually read somewhere else here that you can micro-adjust the barrel inserts, which I did.

Reinserted the keycaps (one at a time) and pressed it a few hundred times (at least).

All work very nicely now :)

I had to take it apart and put it back together twice. It seems like the screws weren't long enough and the nuts wouldn't grab the screws with the washers. Once I did manage to get all the nuts on and reassemble it, there were some groups of keys that didn't actuate properly. They just didn't feel or sound right at all and I was really disappointed with it. I took it completely apart and reassembled it just in case I missed something the first time. I didn't use any washers the second time and it worked like a charm. I bolt modded my other two full sized Model Ms just fine, this one must have some differences in barrel plate or backplate thickness or something.

It seems like the screws weren't long enough and the nuts wouldn't grab the screws with the washers.

Each one is different. I prefer washers but I am usually unable to use washers on approximately 1/3 of the screws (in random areas and no pattern).

If you have strong hands, pushing the barrel plate to bend it tight against the metal makes installing the nuts easier, but you have to be careful not to jiggle the pivot plates out of place since you are holding it in mid-air.

And I also agree about starting in the middle and working out.

I don't usually work in that mush light, so it's not quite as obvious.

I always love the reflections of the keycap sides of Model M caps! I also have a RGB set from Unicomp, but did not use it yet. I think I did not like that bold printing of the letters though!

Very nice, I dig the pink. Normally I am a fan of the classic beige, but this board would look great blacked out like Snoopy's kish with the pink underlay. Just sayin'.

That light blue looks amazing meow  :p great choice ! You will have to let me know about the quality of the unicomp caps when you get them. I really want some new caps for mine but there site is slightly confusing. I would also love a mod pack but I'm not a huge fan of the basic RGB! Anyways your board looks AMAZING already and can't wait to see pics.

Thanks, I'm really pleased with the way the underlay colour turned out! I wasn't sure if I would like the orange and blue either, but I do. The US APL keyset is really awesome looking!

I do have a few Unicomp caps here with me right now, they're alright. No flashing (on an RGB set, WASD set, and a couple custom printed colour keys, I'll have to check the full set when it gets here), and the plastic is nice. The dyesub isn't quite as clear as it is on real IBM caps, but it's nothing that bothers me. One of my custom printed keys (dark blue GEEKHACK) has kind of crooked printing. That's really the only issue I've had with them. Oh, and one of the sets I had shipped to Maxx, they sent me a regular caps lock and control key instead of the reverse. They're good at fixing mistakes like that though!

And this is off-topic, but I also have an excellent condition stock Model F AT coming from Phosphorglow as well! Quite excited for that as well.  :thumb:

I've thought about making one of these myself out of paper or something, but at $7 to buy one, why bother? Although Phosphorglow's website seems a little wonky right now and there's no way on the product page to choose a color when you add it to your cart. So maybe I'll hold off until PG gets the site back up to full steam.

Understood.  I can't wait to see when his site is back up and everyone can see the work he does!  It's just incredible what he can do.  BTW you can see what colors he does offer with the underlays.

Colors: Red, green, light blue, royal blue, yellow, golden yellow, orange, raspberry, pink, and metallic copper.  You just mention it in the comments to him.

Very cool thing to have actually.

I'm pretty sure the underlay image on his site is the one that's in my SSK now.  :))

I'm really curious to know what the metallic copper underlay looks like, it sounds like it could be really cool.

I actually spray painted my SSK's steel plate with metallic gold Rustoleum. You obviously can't see it, but maybe the copper underlay would be appropriate. I do like the way that looks.

Thanks bro! I have a thing for blue. I had him do blue LEDs as well. That's a gorgeous board you have there too. What colour is your plate/underlay thing?

I desperately need some sort of artisan for my SSK, I think it deserves one. I'd love to get a Hack Orange to match the APL, or F2 blue to match the underlay, but Ionospheric BS is my dream cap. I love the MX Iono you traded me to death!  :thumb:

My board finally arrived to me the other day. I believe I have the same controller. Typing on it now, I'm really pleased with it, it's like a completely different keyboard. If it weren't for a ding in the case that's still there, I would swear it was a brand new SSK!

Also, I had him put the caps lock LED under the Ctrl key because I swap my Ctrl and Caps. I haven't seen anyone else with the LED under the Ctrl key.

I am happy to finally have one! It is in pretty damn good shape too, there are a few minor issues on the inside of the case but it still goes together fine and it solid as hell so I do not care. Here is a picture of what I am talking about. http://imgur.com/a/cWgE6 (http://imgur.com/a/cWgE6)

Thanks! I can not believe how solid this thing is for being almost 30 years old. I do not have to bolt mod it yet and the cable is pretty much perfect still. Only one minor flaw and it does not affect the keyboard at all. I did pay a lot more than I would have liked to but in the end after typing on it for a day I feel it was worth it. :)

Yeah, I am going to send it to Phosphor Glow for a screw mod and possibly convert it to USB with the new controller. I just hate to swap out a working controller with a good cable but I want usb just in case I wanted to use this keyboard on something with out PS2, and if it is USB I can use a nice sleeved cable!

A nice splash of colour here and there - needs a bit more yellow thought :p

Lucky you - I get complaints and criticism when I use a BS keyboard :(

I like the color scheme too.  Especially the Delete, F and J keys.  Nice touch!  I think the Pause/Break key goes where your light blue key goes.  Maybe that is where the yellow key that rowdy is going on about should go?
They are great keyboards!

Am coming to Brighton, Victoria later this year. Look forward to finding some nice vintage boards on eBay.au! Mainly interested in Model M these days but want to try an Model F at some point, just not that keen to mess about with conversion etc. Would like to do a bluetooth Model M mod in due course as well. Hardly an easy travel companion but the clicks are just to die for.

There's not that many down here, and most are overpriced compared to what's available in the US.

@Belfong best to box it up and make sure it is securely locked away in a safe ;-)

My SSK is my daily user and my only one. I'm selling up and becoming a four board household.

I have boards with both.  The two-piece are slightly weightier and feel like they transmit less of the click back through the key (and your finger).  If I compare them side by side I prefer the two piece.

In a blind test I don't think the average user can tell the difference.

Yeah, if anything they are harder to clean. But you are less likely to lose a cap in travel.

I guess you could, but that defeats the purpose of the 2-piece caps.  I really honestly can't tell a difference between them.

I never understood the purpose anyway. The plate is curved, not the caps, so it's not like a profile thing. And both parts pop out easily, so it's not really any easier to change layouts.

Yeah, mine was trashed too, before I sent it off to him. Broken spacebar stab, missing stabs and the ones that were there were stuck. Also absolutely filthy and every key had a gross scratchy feeling, a lot of the springs were kinda rusty.  :))

It's a 1397680 born on 3-10-1993 very similar to the one here.  I even have that same box, but the serial number on the box is one digit off from the keyboard:
http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/9242/subcatid/0/id/175803

My sdl cable is a bit unique as I've never seen one like it before and it's almost white.  But it's either the original or was put with the keyboard, many, many years ago because the foam has indentations from the cable and the cable hasn't moved.

The pics are from when the seller sent me what he had.  You should have seen my jaw drop when I saw what he was wanting to get rid of.  Story behind it is that he helped a friend clean out a storage unit and the friend let him keep it for the help.  He didn't even know what it really was, just wanted to make some space in his place.  There's two rivet heads that fell out, but no biggie.  You wouldn't know they were missing by typing on it.  :thumb:

One question though.  I've noticed that some models have a scroll lock button that has no legend for num lock and others do.  Are there different part numbers for the space savers that have these subtle differences?  Is there a list somewhere of all the space saver model numbers?  I checked the model M wikipedia table and it didn't seem to differentiate.

Get black fabric dye and do it yourself.   Very easy.

Looks good.  Painting isn't difficult either, just have to prep right, but I personally would not modify an SSK in a way that couldn't be easily reversed.

I'd look for an industrial case or full keyboard as those black keys would look awesome on it.  You could always spice up the black by using the colored shifts from a unicomp rgb ctrl/shift/alt set.

My plan was to use one at work and one at home.

But then someone complained about the one at work, so I had to desist.  And I'm only allowed to use the one at home on weekends so I don't wake everyone else up early in the mornings and late at night.

These are 2-piece. I have yet to try a one-piece keycap IBM board. If there is a Displaywriter SSK with these same caps in one-piece it is worth a fortune...

Which bit exactly are you talking about?

Maybe you'll want to find a picture of an SSK and fullsize and compare them yourself.

Nice, at 9:03 he's showing a SSK (missing a few keycaps apparently but nothing hard to fix), saying it's convenient that the Z170-A and Z170-Deluxe mobo's still come with a PS/2 port for those still enjoying rocking on Model Ms!

(found this because I'm planning to build a Skylake / M.2 SSD PCI-e 3.0 4x / system soon and was googling / searching YouTube for some infos)

Is he someone from GH?

How do the 'Yes' and 'No' keys work? And why the F1 and F2 are located in the arrow keys?

It's all the same under the covers.  The blue-capped I-SSK's you sometimes see come from (or were destined for) Mopar Diagnostic Systems using IBM hardware.  Those keys correspond to specific functions in the software, probably ones most often used.

Got my first SSK in the mail today! Very excited! Member of the club, finally.  :thumb:

I was browsing Pinterest the other day for keyboard ideas and came across this picture:
[attach=1]

My first thought was that they're custom caps from Unicomp. I emailed them asking about SSK caps and if they offered sub-legends with different colors. They emailed back saying they offer the sub-legends only in gray.
Anyone know what model these come from? I'm also thinking they may still be from Unicomp, but they don't offer that color anymore.

After all those years I finally got myself a SSK.

1392980 Terminal, Feb '90.
Using it with a regular fullsize M (1391403) controller board and cable currently.

I am more curious than ever. I would think the regular controller would still allow you to use the extended features of the SSK without any problems, would it?
I believe it's the same controller for the SSK if I am not mistaken.

But I could be.

Doesn't have the same firmware.   You cannot active the embedded numpad when using a fullsize controller.

I recently just joined the club. I posted this find recently on Deskthority.

3 NIB Lexmark branded Model M SSK's  ;D (2 of which are completely sealed from the factory)
A IBM SSK from 1990 that is kinda beat up.

Technically it counts more than most of the keyboards posted as the thread is called the "Model M space saver club", while the SSK stands for "Space Saving Keyboard".

Yours is a "Space Saver II".  It's a decent keyboard for what it is,  I've thought of grabbing one as a travel board.

I can't be the only one that got this message:

Why was this split?

That link goes to this thread, which I'm already watching.  Why does it not give us the link to the thread that was split off?

Beautiful! Love the enter key!

I haven’t had an SSK in quite some time. I’ve really missed it. It was always my favorite / most unique board. I love the feel and sound of the buckling springs. I finally got another SSK. I’m incredibly grateful!!
