Yup, I'll have to find a way to get one then. This is too awesome to pass up.
Really liking the idea and how it all looks. Don't think I'll be getting one myself though as I just bought a viper.
Assuming the hot swapable switches are like SIP sockets on a PCB, and that switches should still be removable by hand-- How do the switches stand up to swapping out keycaps? Would the switch get pulled out with the keycaps (especially tighter fitting ones like DSA on MX Clear)?
Interesting! Does the FN key also use a Cherry switch? Was the plate also cut on finished carbon fibre, or was it glazed again with resin after the switch cuts?

And if I had my board upside-down and gave it a little jostle, would they come lose?
Also, how rigid will the carbon fibre be? Bendable? Still heavy?
Also, is backspace splitable?
Can we move it back in line with the rest of the mods and put tilde on the far right?
A suggestion for the FN key -- would it be possible to have it aligned with the spacebar? It may not be in the centre of the case, but the staggered alignment with the spacebar seems awkward IMO.
this is pretty cool. I remember the thread when the concept was introduced some time ago. Glad to see it has come to fruition.
I'm going to assume the space bar is 6.75x?
The bottom row having a mix of both 1.5x and 1.25x is a little iffy but given today's many group buys it should be easier to source a matching set. I also agree it would be visually cleaner if the FN lined up with the space bar.
Wow. Thought I was done with mx keyboards....but that is seriously cool.
What are the color options? Would love something more than the typical black, red, grey or silver. Would love some more vibrant options.

Any idea how long till a GB would be possible to start?

I'm still working on it. I think I'll let Massdrop handle this group buy since the factory requires 100 pcs MOQ and it's hard for me to make it happen on my own. If everything goes well, we might be able to see the group buy starting in 3 weeks.
This is impressive simply for the hot swappable switches if nothing else. We need more of this technology.
So do we need to buy plate mounted switches with diodes already in them?
I like this. I would buy one.
Not a fan of the modifier layout and sizing though. I'd much rather see a 1x left win or the option to omit that entirely, shift the spacebar over, and have another function key on the right. But that's just me.

I have never found a need for right ctrl or right alt to exist, so I would make one of those an fn key and the other the win key.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/9Uln5Uv.jpg)
In the above, hyper would be win and code would be fn.
It makes win+E a bit more awkward, but I'm okay with that.
Have one of them as a hidden windows key! CTRL ALT space WIN (CTRL/ALT/MENU/FN)
Your keyboard has never looked prettier! [I use win+E all the time, R, didn't know about L!]

So you're saying I should trade a 2-key combo for a 4-key combo?

Yeah, maybe. I don't really use the R-Alt or R-Ctrl. Would make Win+L a lot easier, but shifts the hand acrobatics over to Win+R. Not sure how I feel about two-handing a Win+R combination. I'd have to try it.

I'm sorry, four key combo? It's still just win+r.
I'm saying remove the superfluous 1.25 mods [right win, right ctrl, right alt]
I wrote (CTRL/ALT/MENU/FN) to mean your last 1.5 mod could be whatever you wanted.
On a tkl you don't need FN.
As Hoff pointed out, r-Alt and r-Ctrl are nearly useless.
And I personally don't use the menu key, but some people might.
Sorry, just a little bump,
do we have a timeline for this buy?

Feng mentioned if it works out with massdrop a GB could start in approx 3 weeks. Hopefully that happens!
along with alu, carbon fiber is doing good job adding the cost :(

Yeah, I would love to see this PCB in a Poker compatible form factor ready to go. Just add your own case, plate, switches and keycaps, no soldering needed.
I love the layout and the overall concept. I don't understand why carbon fiber... but still very interesting project.

This.
I think the point of using carbon fiber in products is the weight it can save, but using it with an alu housing, I don't see why
I think there are two good reasons for it.That's exactly my thought. I like it. I doubt it's a huge difference between machining aluminum anyway, and it's worth trying out.
1-I don't think we've seen a carbon fiber plate
2-I think it looks pretty awesome

You don't like massdrop? Why not?
I just bought a lightsaver v1 so my wallet is empty :( but I would consider selling it for this :thumb: but it also depends on how when the gb starts
Any ETA on this board? I'd like two please!! Also, I'm guessing that this board will require new MX switches? I love Carbon Fiber. Any chance of a Carbon Fiber case? Or titanium??^I like how he thinks
I am intrigued, but before I bite I would need a better definition of "fully programmable." Are we talking Fn/Pn/macro programming? Or full firmware flashing (eg, non-qwerty layouts, custom layers, etc)?
it will probably be programmable with one of those windows-only GUI that Koreans like so much.
Any chance we can get other options besides carbon fiber for the plate?

Yea the granite v2 set should work fine, any dsa profile keycap set will look fine with this board's layout options. :thumb:Thank you mates :thumb:
When is this going to be on massdrop? Was there a date set?
Still trying to get things work with Massdrop. But I don't know for sure yet. They need a sample first before doing the group buy, but we won't be able to get a sample until the next round of production is done in at least 1-2 months. If they can't do the group buy without a sample, I will consider running a GB here on GH for the first round.
Not sure if it helps the cause for round 1, but I have started a poll on MD to help gather votes to promote the keyboard on MD, and help them realise how awesome this keyboard is, and that they need to make it work!

I really want to see this happen! My body is ready for the Smart 68
submitted my vote, is that all GHers? or isi there a bunch of MD people voting too? 130/170 lol
Omg, that answers many questions! Thanks for the link!
Much excitement! Which colour... Black, Grey, and silver. That grey looks sooo good, but then on a white keyset, a silver case would look great! Black I thought was the safest choice, but that grey looks amazeballs :blank:
I didn't know there was a vote on mass drop.
I can't find it.
I love this concept and I voted for it on Massdrop, but if a group buy happens soon-ish (the next couple of months or so) it's going to be out of my reach budget-wise. I'd be all in for a second round a little later on though, for sure.
Is this still taking orders? and what's the status on it?
Hot swappable LEDs, but I wonder how the current to the LED is managed. In a conventional voltage controlled output we need different resistors for different voltage drop LEDs otherwise brightness will not be appropriately matched.
For a given resistance, a red LED will be over drive, while a white one might be very dim if it lights up at all. Unless it has a constant current drive, or a swappable resistor too.
I'm just speculating here too, lets see how it pans out when it happens :)
The hype is real!
I hope everyone that voted is aware that this is essentially a keyboard "kit" and doesn't come with switches or keycaps. I know everyone from here would know, but wondering if all votes reflect that.
Is this still taking orders? and what's the status on it?
Hasn't even started taking orders.
We're all holding our breaths.
Please post in this thread if you’re interested or you have any suggestions.

ooh.. thats promising! we don't see the leds being swapped between positions, but hey, I would love if it was that simple :thumb:
And that double LED thing is cool! great for number row backlit keys.
is this really going to happen?
I would get it in a heart beat... but at this point I thought it was vapor-ware
Is there any update on that forum? Like pics or something. I'd love to see some more of those :)I would get it in a heart beat... but at this point I thought it was vapor-ware
It's already in production so definitely not vapor-ware.
I believe the GB ended last month on a chinese keyboard forum, I think I posted the link above.
Ive been waiting for this board ignoring the other boards on md along with the vipers.
I keep hoping this drop will start soon.
Not sure if anyone saw or read this but MassDrop has been working on getting a GB started for the Smart68 but the factory that produced the Chinese group buy apparently doesn't exist anymore.
So.... there's more work to be done to get this in production for us outside of China...

That's a real shame to hear =(
I wonder what the biggest issues are for the production of this.
Is it the carbon fibre plate or the PCB?
I see this as an upside. Allows my wallet to recover.Or it will lead you to consider other alternatives and when this drop comes around, your wallet will be even more emaciated!

I would absolutely drop the cash for this. Just tell me how.
I am BEYOND interested in this. This is the perfect compromise between layout and portability. How can I give you my money?
I was also considering this option. Hopefully they can work something out with another vendorI believe this is what MassDrop is currently working on at this moment.
Would it be possible to do a group buy without Massdrop?Yes. Definitely possible.
Yes. Definitely possible.
But whoever ends up running the GB will have to comb through the countless electronics factories in China to find one that can produce the board for a price low enough that enough people will join to meet MOQ. :-[
MD is our best bet at this point :(

We just need to group buy a Chinese factory... Hmmmmm
Massdrop is busy trying to push their Infinity keyboard which may qualify as being one of the ugliest keyboards I've ever seen.
Bummer

In terms of aesthetics, I absolutely agree with you. Through a business perspective, that metal plate that serves as the feet (in some layouts) is really genius for saving money and resources. But still, I didn't buy it and most likely won't unless its PCB only.
OMFG my dreams have come true tell me when i can buy this
is this till going to happen?
I'm holding my breath and might pass out soon.
I'm working with a manufacturer about a TKL.
They already produce keyboards so it would be more a modification off a current model. They're supposed to be testing the hotswapping right now.

It will also have the FN key on the front side?
A TKL would certainly be interesting but what about the cost? I would expect it to go up as well.
Will there be a cnc aluminum case on the tkl?
Where do I buy this?
This is such a cool idea in my mind that I really do hope they find a way to bring it back. I don't have the spare cash to afford it now but soon.Well, I think they did this just by using SIP sockets.
Really sad, couldn't care less for a tkl really. The smart68 was something new and innovative.
Also, hot swap LEDs can be accomplished with SIP sockets, the switches use a special contact in the pcb that they can clip in to.
The keycap is the only thing that concern me.
How hard it's to get he keycaps set that fits this keyboard?
I might have to do this along with DeeLong. Massdrop says they don't have the confidence to do the group buy yet since it's a new product. They might consider in the future if a GB on GH goes well.
This is one of the most beautiful boards I've seen. If I had the money, I'd be all over this when it becomes available. But I do have reservations about the function bar. I have large hands and I find it a bit awkward to put my thumbs on the side of my keyboard case and reach my fingers beyond the home row. Still, it's a really nice board.
+1 that!I might have to do this along with DeeLong. Massdrop says they don't have the confidence to do the group buy yet since it's a new product. They might consider in the future if a GB on GH goes well.
Please make the Smart68 happen Feng. I have full faith in you!
Still waiting on this. I will not buy any more keyboards or keycaps for rest of the year until I get this. It has been hard to resist this past month but I did it.
Fianlly, just confirmed with the producer, the group buy will be released mostly in August. :)
how does the "hot-swap" led thingy works? why does it need no soldering?
explain it to me easily, i don't understand this too much.
thanks.

Too bad that the bottom row is non standard. Plus I'm not sure about the carbon fiber plate. I've only seen one group buy with carbon fiber platesIn addition, how secure are the LEDs and would it be a problem if they are lose and hit the bottom of keycaps to reduce their lifespan?
If you make the switches removable using sip sockets, how many insertions can they stand? I'm asking that because it seems that to remove on switch, you actually need to open completely the keyboard and detach all the switches?

My wallet is read, glad I skipped the pok3r now. :p
It's alive? Oh wow.. And aluminum casing. Is this Korean custom or made in USA? :)
I think it's actually a Chinese board, i know MartinYeah has one that he got from a small run on the Chinese forums.
Was there a review or something on that initial run of Smart68?I think it's actually a Chinese board, i know MartinYeah has one that he got from a small run on the Chinese forums.
I found several references on the Chinese forum enjoyclick.org, including on their wiki here: http://www.enjoyclick.org/wiki/SMART_68%E9%94%AE%E7%9B%98
But it looks like you can't view photos unless you log in. There is one photo of the "Beta V1 Rabbit Special Version" from the wiki...Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/NbiXsJa.jpg)
If you read Chinese, the user is DeeLonG. It looks like this might be the original group buy thread: www.enjoyclick.org/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=371&extra=page%3D1
If I remember correctly it should be plugging/screwing it together. Switches, LEDs and stuff can be plugged in without soldering as you can see in the video in the first post.
will the be running through massdrop?

I sure as hell hope not! I'm fairly certain feng will run this himself. He is fairly busy as he just received the keys from his GMK Cyan GB.

Here you go guys and gals. He also said he would run this GB in August so we still have some time.
Massdrop isn't great and it showed recently with the TA buy. I really don't want to see them running something like this.
It's far better to use MassDrop. They're a company with a reputation beyond these forums and a vested interest in keeping their customers happy. Obviously I'm new here, and you guys might have excellent experiences with Feng, but to me he's just an anonymous user on an internet forum who, if this happens, wants me to send him 300 USD plus postage, without giving me any guarantee that I get anything in return.
Ask yourselves, would you trust me with your 300 USD, or would you prefer Massdrop?
Right. So if everyone who wants to buy this keyboard knows and trusts Feng, that's not a problem. But do you really think that's the case?
In the end each buyer will have to decide for themselves. And in a forum such as this, if Feng was dodgy everyone would know it. But I think Massdrop is a far better option for most GBs. If MD said no, which it seems like it did, then that obviously changes things, but I still like MD.
Of course, if there were more GB sites out there so that MD got some competition, that would be even better. Free market and all that capitalist propaganda ;)
I'd love to see this go through without MD involvement.
@tofgerl - Nobody's forcing you to join the group buy. If you have a problem you're welcome to wait on Massdrop for a (possible) Round 2. It takes some big ****ing balls to come on here and your first post is questioning the reputation of a long-time member. WTF dude?

What if you don't know Chinese, and you want to place an order through this page?
Interested. RIP wallet.

There are options listed at 1400 yuan on the Taobao link a few posts up. That's only about $219 US. The most expensive option I see is 1700 yuan, which is roughly $266 US. Figure about $30 for shipping and it might be possible to get one of these shipped for less than $300. That's a steal considering what you get, and almost $100 cheaper than many Korean customs. Not bad.
is the board in the taobao link legit?
Really awesome work! Extremely interesting concept/solution. I am also wondering about ISO option. I cannot see that this has been answered. Any news on ISO option would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!I second that, would be nice to know.
anyone know if gateron switches will be able to work?

Why wouldn't they? It's all basically the same switch.
is the layout programmable?
hell yeah! It is happening. Didn't vote as I want layout #1 'cause most of my spacebars are 6.25. Thanks for the update, Feng.

Sorry guys, made a mistake here. I meant to ask which type of carbon fiber plates you'd prefer, not which layout you like. Here's two options.I love the idea of having a separate plate just for the bottom row! Experimenting with new things is the way to foster more innovation. I'm all for it. :)
1. Two separate plates, meaning that if you want both layouts, you would have to buy two plates for better compatibility.
2. One plate with separate bottom row, meaning that you only need to buy one plate which is compatible for both layout #2 and #3. The bottom row is installed separately from the main plate. But it's kinda a new thing, so we don't know if it would be accepted by most people.

What about stability? Isn't the extra plate kinda loose?

So, is the offset backspace key still an option?
It doesn't look like it is based on the plate renders.
So the keyboard is on taobao right now... Not a big fan of the case design change. The original case design was one of the biggest draws to this, after the sockets ofc. We'll see what Feng's gb price is.I totally agree... Reminds me of Ducky's Shine4 case design. This actually makes me re=think if I am gonna spend my hard earned cash on this board. When looking at it on Taobao there seems to be options of case color. Might look better if the case is black imo. There are no pictures of the black option though. Contemplating if a future hot swap board might look better and wait for it to happen.
I am very interested in getting this keyboard. Is there going to be enough for everyone who wants one? I made an account as soon as i saw this amazing thing.
My main problem is the lip. Grey case with lip, black case with lip, pink case with lip - doesn't matter. I don't lip!
Let's face it, $300 is a steal for what is basically guaranteed to be your last ever 60%.
Wait. This still hasn't gotten a GB?
I realize it's most likely been mentioned in this thread, but just in case I didn't read through it in its entirety and skipped to the bottom to reply:
Is it still happening through Massdrop? And soon?
Since we're waiting anyway, anyone know of a 60% PCB with a layout that allows arrowkeys to the bottom right? "short-shift-key"-style preferred.

Good question. Does anyone know which keyboard is shown in the header of this massdrop item?

just wondering would it be possible to make the fn button in front of space bar into left and right key for mouse, and add track point between g,h,b?
I'm ready to throw my money at a lipless version of the Smart 68.
Someone on Reddit is selling one. Not sure it sold yet.I'm ready to throw my money at a lipless version of the Smart 68.
I'm ready to throw my money at any version of the Smart68. ;)

It's probably still available. It's not the version that is hot swappable.

Made an account just to express interest. However, is there anyway we could bring the price tag down a bit (I don't mind the lip either).

Well we need to look at this in a different light, at least we are maybe getting a group buy. ;D
If patience isn't your thing, grab it from Taobao (http://world.taobao.com/item/521044971611.htm?spm=a312a.7700714.0.0.cMSM3z#detail).

Taobao only sells the 22mini hotswappable, and not the original 68 mini. =\

This is very off topic, but how do you have 0 posts?..
Hello?
I'm getting impatient I may just get it from taobao :(
I just talked to the producer but unfortunately he's too busy with a project fund raising lately and he doesn't have time to deal with Smart 68. Although I was planning on doing a group buy in December, it seems it has to be delayed until further notice from the producer. For now we just don't know yet when this can happen. Sorry for the bad news. :(

I'm definitely interested in this, once it's available.
Only been signed up to this forum for a few days and already looking to spend over a thousand dollars on various things. This is crazy.

Recently picked up a Smart68, why does the front "click"? What is the purpose of that?

Private sale from an user on /r/mechmarket. I think he got his off Taobao, at least thats what I think as there are kits for the Smart68 on there.

But I thought those weren't the hot-swappable ones. Care to share the TB link?
Oh man, between this and the White Fox, it's a hard decision. I don't really care about the hot-swapping aspect of this keyboard--it's that FN key that's most compelling to me. It's a more elegant solution than my current one of using TouchCursor and using the spacebar as the fn key.

I don't wanna stir anything up, but it's March right now and I'm wondering what the status is. Some time as passed now, will this get into GB? feng?
I'm still very very interested!

I just got one of these in today from Taobao for just shy of 210 USD. The thing is gorgeous. My biggest issue at the moment is that I need a new plate so my backspace and tilde keys are in the right places, as well as (imo) better bottom row sizes. Is there a CAD file for this layout (https://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=61714.0;attach=109896;image)? I'd love to get one done in aluminum.
The plate I have now is this one (https://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=61714.0;attach=74314;image).
Horribly focused cell phone pics of the board (no switches or caps yet. Hopefully she'll be done by Monday):Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/gr2feBa.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/xq0z195.jpg)
Was that the one that I linked by 菊少666? Cause it is no longer being sold and you happen to have it :thumb:
Looks like yours is version 1 of the smart 68 and if I remember correctly that may have been the one with the front fn switch that looked messed up from soldering? You might want to check the PCB.

Yeah, that's the one! It seems he relisted it at a lower price, as the link you put up was for 1800 RMB and I got this for ~1300. It is a version 1, and the front switch did look a bit botched when I got it in. It was mostly just flux residue luckily, and after some cleaning and a resolder, looks and works like it's brand new! I had to put my light (Blue springs) Blacks in it as I don't have any clears on hand, and I really hate linear switches, so that's no good, but the keyboard itself is really nice. Having dedicated arrow keys and a caps lock again is gonna take some getting used to, as opposed to using my Pok3r.
What is your takeaway from it so far? Build quality is alright? Etc.

So far, I'm enjoying it a lot. Having arrow keys again is an adjustment for sure, and I wish I had a plate with the backspace and tilde keys in the opposite positions, but I can work around that. I also wish the board was Mini USB instead of Micro, but I digress. As far as build uality goes, the letter between "Tab and "W" seems to be non-functional, which I'll be trying to work out in just a minute (I didn't notice it until I had to use it just now). As far as concerns about pulling out switches when changing caps, I wouldn't be. The switches seem to grab the plate well enough to avoid being pulled out and they feel very solid.
The plate is extraordinarily light, but feels solid (it should, it's carbon fiber). The case feels great and the Fn button is a very thick aluminum rod and feels incredibly durable. The PCB is attached to the case via a handful of brass standoffs, then the plate is held down with a set of screws into the standoffs. My gripe with the standoffs is that if you use the plate I have, there's a standoff directly under the "Backspace" key that can interfere with the stabilizer and make the key stick. With a different layout, this wouldn't be problematic at all, though.
Overall, I'm loving the board and would absolutely recommend it if you're willing to spend some time figuring out a couple of the quirks of the board. I'd say another revision with slightly better thought put toward layout and standoff spacing would bump it from a 9.4 to a perfect 10/10.
Neat, keep me posted. I want to know how it breaks in over time.
Could you also post pics?
How thick is the case it looks very thin on the V1 and the V2 looks too thick.
Group buy will be available real soon in probably a week. In the mean time, I'll list 5 pcs of Smart 68 V2 on my site tomorrow.

How quickly did they sell out? It's great news that this keyboard is entering mass production! Will there be a fully-loaded product with key caps, switches, etc?

I don't think there's any indication that they ever actually went up.
Sure , the GB will come soon , maybe , it's tomorrow.
Yeah, I want in!!!! Where do I buy?!?!
