Title: Starting keycap crafting
Post by: JT_Sea on Tue, 12 April 2016, 23:03:42
So, I've found many awesome caps that I can't come close to affording. I figured I might as well give making one a shot.

I thought I'd start with something I like - video games.

So far I'm fairly happy with how this is turning out. From what I've been told the teeth as they are won't cast well, so I think I'm going to redo them.

Now to track down a toaster oven, and order some stuff from reynolds advanced materials.

And any input would be appreciated.

Looks good overall! I would recommend two things to make casting easier. I would make the mouth solid, and carve the teeth, so there isn't an actual gap in the mouth (if that makes sense, just so that there's no nooks or crannies when you're casting that will make the mold all wonky). I would also angle the leaves up a bit, so that they aren't also parallel to the top of the mold. It would make it easier to pull out of the mold, even if you only angle it 20 degrees or so.

Great progress so far though, can't wait to see what else you'll make  :thumb:

I think I get what you are saying. I'll take it into consideration, thanks!

After letting the piranha plant sit for a few days, I think I'll start that one over again. Its not really conveying anything good.

But in the mean time I've started working on other caps for the Super Mario series. I thought the goomba would be a good candidate.

This guy can definitely use some finishing, but overall I'm happy with the first pass.

As always input is appreciated

If that goomba is small enough to not hit the caps around it that's looking great, and piranha plant v2 looks easier to cast and more comfortable to press - definite progress :thumb:

How do you actually make those?

How do you actually make those?
@iLLucionist currently I'm just sculpting these out of Super Sculpey http://www.ebay.com/itm/251644946799?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/251644946799?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT). Next step is to actually bake them, so they harden and from there I can start the casting process.

@suicidal_orange So far I think it is. I actually don't have a mech at home, just in the office. I'll have to cart the lil goomba in tomorrow and see.π

Boo hiss - I made this fella a lil to big. I'll have to try sanding it down now that I baked it. I may also just try and make a V2, we'll see what shapes up.

@iLLucionist - nope not yet, thats what the boo-hiss was all about. The goomba needs to go on a diet.

I'm going to try sanding it down tonight, and if that doesn't work out I will make another one.

I'll say, that thing is enormous! Like the design though, I really like the idea of squishing Goombas :D

@iLLucionist - just sold my planck on /r/mechmarket to fund the purchase of casting materials.

@romevi the eyebrows totally make the goomba, we'll see if I get to the point where I can add them to the grey one tonight.

I had to do some re-jiggering of the shape of the goomba. The first one was really fat, so i was able to taper it under at towards the base and that added a lot of nice shape. I also used a different super sculpey for the littler one.

Thanks for looking so closely at my work!

So I got a package from UPS today!

I wanted to get the little goomba into a mold right away, and as you can tell I don't have a dedicated working space. Well, lets just say I didn't want to mix up chemicals under my infant sons bedroom. So I just did a quick and dirty mixup outside on the recycling bin.

This is the oomoo 30, so its has a long cure time. I won't know whats happening with it until the morning. So until then enjoy my janky first mix.

First off, I totally messed up the the 2nd part of the first mold. I completely forgot to grab the petroleum jelly, and make sprus. so.. yeah that was 12 hours of waiting for curing down the drain.

However I was able to remember those vital steps the next time around!

and here is the 2nd mold next to the first one. I had to cut that one up to get the goomba out.. Also notice my excellent consistency in the mixture amounts.

And now the more exciting part.

Darth goomba is a little wobbly on the stem, and naturally has a few bubbles but I'm super stoked on it! I'm casting a yellow one right this moment, and I may have photos before I go to bed.

Looks great so far! MX stems are pretty hard to work with at first but definitely better than most of my first successes!

The row of goombas up front arent key caps. Remember when I ***ed up the first mold? Well when I mix up some resin I have more than enough to fill the working mold, and I couldn't possibly throw away the first mold, so I just pour some resin in there and see how it shapes up.

Thanks for all the support everyone, hopefully I'll have some quality keys in the not too distant future.

Im certainly no pro, but for my stems, I found trying to even carefully inject it with a syringe still caused bubbles.

The one thing that has been 100% successful for me is just dabbing a thin paperclip in the silicone, and wiping the silicone in all four sides of the stem, then progressively dabbing more and more goop until its fill up even with the top of the stem.  then high pour the rest in.

Im going to make my first buckling spring mold tonight!

Hell yea, the stems look way better!
Honestly, doing that, Ive made caps that fit better than all the artisans I own. (which is hardly any)

Im starting to run low on the oomoo because I was using too much early on.
Im going to order some in the next month or so and get back into making stuff other than blanks.

Nice job!  :thumb:

Thanks man! I'm also starting to run low on my oomoo 30, but I figure I should cast more caps atm and just deal with the molds I already have. Ideally I can make a 2nd mold for a new keycap with what I have, but I guess we'll see what happens.

Thanks again for the advice!

Guess I got in a hurry last night and didn't pour it correctly.

Not sure if you can see from this photo, but the lineup isn't quite right.
Fortunately there is an easy fix for that at least!

So now that I'm out of oomoo.. It'll have to wait a little bit before I can recast the goomba 4x. I think next go I'll put this one with the caps in it, under the goombas.
Maybe that'll help them line up more correctly. I'm also kicking around the idea of a cut out plate that would work for lining up caps in the molds.

Thank you! I've been mixing in some white and then a little of another color in order to make an opaque color from the tints that I have. Next time I make an order, probably today or tomorrow, if I can afford it I'll pick up some opaque colors.

Funny story about those, they aren't actually keycaps. The short ones are, as I have taken to calling them anyway, desk warts. If you read further up in this thread you'll find that I royally messed up the stem part of my first mold. I didn't spray the mold with release agent when I poured the 2nd batch of oomoo onto it... I was able to cut the goomba out, and I had a perfectly reasonably mold of that part of the keycap. So I've just kept on practicing casting with it when I mix up a batch of smooth-cast.

I was thinking about selling those as 'placeholder' keycaps. I'd invoice someone and send them the desk wart version as a placeholder while I get the pressure pot and more supplies ordered. Then if I tried to bail with the cash, or didn't deliver the keycap within an agreed on time frame the buyer could force a refund through paypal since the placeholder isn't actually a keycap. I thought it'd give a better degree of protection for someone. I wonder if anyone would be willing to buy them that way.

Have you tried using a pipette or a syringe to pour resin in. I tried it and it eliminated 99% of bubbles. Also I find more sprue holes work for me. Good luck with your project

Same here, i also used q-tips as sprue. I'm still hesitating in using a pressure pot. And up till now from what i'm doing, my method seems working for me. So for a keycap with only a tiny bubble, it's fine for me.

Make it so.

Homemade Gummy Snacks Recipe
Prep time:  5 mins
Cook time:  5 mins
Total time:  10 mins
Serves: 16+

Ingredients

    1 cup 100% fruit juice
    2 tbsp grass-fed gelatin
Silicone candy molds or an 8" x 8" glass baking dish

Instructions

1. Pour the juice into small saucepan. Heat gently until the juice is very warm but not boiling.
2. Turn off the heat, and slowly pour the gelatin into the juice while whisking until it's incorporated. Repeat with the other tablespoon of gelatin.
3. Pour the mixture into silicone molds or an 8-inch by 8-inch glass baking dish that's been very lightly greased with coconut oil. You don't have to grease the silicone molds if you decide to use those. How many gummy snacks you'll end up with depends on how big your molds are.
4. Refrigerate the Homemade Gummy Snacks for at least 2 hours, then pop them out of the molds. You may want to freeze them for 15 minutes before you try to unmold.
5. Keep these gummy snacks refrigerated in a covered container. They keep for 3 to 5 days.

Thanks man! I may be able to cast a new one tonight. Got the new box of oomoo in last night, made the first 1/2 of the mold before bed and poured the 2nd part this morning before work. She's sitting in the pressure pot right now. Hopefully I didn't eff something up..

Still have one minor issue, but the second cap I cast last night didn't have it so I might have that sorted out. I did some heavy sanding on the master before making this mold, and now that I have a few to test I'll see how well they fit on my board + macropad today. Might need to do some more sanding..

Test fitting on a display board.

The OG goomba had some fitting issues with the large lip -
(http://i.imgur.com/bwBXXoh.jpg)

So I spent some time with a few pieces of sandpaper and the master over the weekend.
Still a little snug, but I think it works.

Interestingly enough from this photo it looks like the OG gooms has more clearance. It doesn't.

Now to cut out the mx stem, cast a few caps sans stems and make a few bases out of mx + topre + alps. More updates to follow tomorrow :D

Just a heads up

I found topre and alps to need the same technique for making the stems mold work correctly.

And alps is super easy to get a decent cast of the stem, while topre is seemingly more difficult.

all that said, I dont have a pressure pot like you do...

I'm sure you noticed the drastic improvement in the stem on the mold earlier, I'm hoping that a topre stem will work out equally well when curing under pressure.

I've gotta say though, the pressure pot is almost like magic. I'm so glad I sold my SA sets & artisans& placeholders to get some better equipment. I'm really curious to know how a vac pot will help the process, and a high pressure valve in the pressure pot.

Listerine Goomba?
Love the name! I think I'll use it when I do a public sale.

Oh yea, the difference is night and day, and goes without saying.

Im really happy for you to be able to get this sweet set up.

I think you got the big change out of the way, and the vacuum will just be a nice compliment to the pressure.

IMO working on projects and creating stuff is much more satisfying than collecting cap sets and hoarding **** lol.

Nope, not yet. I should get around to it one of these days. I figure I'm doing good just getting the casting process down better, then I can expand after that.

Are blanks worth while to make?

How ever will you decide who gets single color and who gets the dubs?

Idk how many people you sold to already, or did you just promise place holders?

I'm thinking Random.org will be very valuable in my future. I also will add a caveat on my sale posts that anyone who wants to trade for caps I'm looking to acquire will get top priority! At least thats what I'm thinking now, I haven't worked out the specifics yet.

I actually already have a private list of folks waiting for the goombas, I think I'll do a private sale first before I do a public one. Need to make sure everyone is okay with the quality first and foremost.

I have sent a few out as gifts to friends who have helped me out along the way, their reviews should provide valuable insight into the caps and if they'll stand up to a public release.

Thank you thank you! I'm super excited to get my backers caps in the mail, and I'll have enough after that to start reaching out to my private R1 list. Shouldn't be more than a week or so and I'll be posting public R1 on /mechmarket. Gotta keep that small though, don't want to die.

Minor update

I've got a few gooms ready to head out, but I think I'll wait till they are all ready to go out for my backers.

4X is curing as I type this - also notice the far left stem..

First time triple shots have come out close to correct. The black could be darker, but I'm 100% happy with these guys.

It was cold the other night in the basement, so when I pulled this one out it was still mushy, so I mushed it a little more. Sadly the  stem didn't make it, otherwise this baby'd be on my keyboard.

Had a few hanger onners inside the alps caps mold, that was cleaned up this morning and the next one should be better.

Don't have the detail shots of the mx caps from the 4x, but they look pretty sharp. I'm really excited to be working with this new mold, it should help me get to market faster. Sadly I didn't have enough to go for the bigger container of oomoo on my last order, so I can't made a second 4x, but I should be just fine as is for now.

I'm for sure worried about the snitch, but I think its worth a go. The oomoo 25 is really easy to stretch, so maybe... We'll see how it turns out.

I dont doubt that you can make it happen
I was just wondering about the ability to make a number of casts before the mold eventually gives in.

How did you make the alps cap? it looks really clean.

Its actually been kinda fun having a small group of people to email every couple of days. They've been really great with the ups and downs, and its a small enough group that production isn't crazy.

I'm thinking I might do that type of thing again, maybe with the next batch? Change a few of the rules around and such but.. Just a thought, not sure if I really want to, but I like having that small group of people to check in with.

I think of all the things that I've learned so far this stands out to me.

I consider both of these caps failures. The one on the right, obviously it didn't make it and by the bubbles you can tell its pre pressure pot days and the one of the left while technically superior it has a divot in the chin.. I still have a long ways to go in my process, but man it feels nice to see the progress.

It was really neat running a mini kick starter through the r/mk r/mm community, and I might do it again just to have people to write to a few times a week.

Oh man, I wish I had read this last night. Seriously laughed out loud when I saw this this morning.

But to answer your question, it depends. A lot of these aren't even caps. Remember when I royally ****edup my first mold? Well I kept pouring resin into the 1st part of it anyway just to practice.

Lots of them have bubbles, thats been solved, mostly, by better equipment.

Some of them weren't mixed correctly, as in they are still sorta flexible.

Some of the had issues when trying multi shots, which happened because I tried to mix the very least amount of resin I could... That didn't work out.

I also had an issue with a mold, so some of them have this extra tall kinda lip thing around the bottom.

And a few didn't have quite enough resin in them, so when I put them under pressure there wasn't enough in the sprue hole to make a fully formed cap.

My personal favorite though was when it was colder in the basement and they were still maleable after 2 hours in the mold (using 326) so I squished one :)

So yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of other mistakes that I have yet to make but no one thing aside from their general lack of drive :D Thanks @Romevi for that  ;D

Haha, this is a great photo
:D

I had some fun mailing packages yesterday. Got all the Squishy McSquishface monsters out to my backers. Renaming them too.. Not sure on what to call them. And now I only have 10 caps that are good enough to sell. Better keep working.

And just working on some colors.

Seems like blue & purp are the most popular so far. The pink batch I did last night ended up being a wee bit fleshy colored, but kinda neat just the same. Really digging the mint/celeste type color.

New order or oomoo is out for delivery today, so that means I can either make more molds for the lil monster &/or refine some other sculpts and make molds for them. Probably both :)

I've seen the 'show me what you've got' gif and I've heard of the show before. But as you can imagine, I don't watch a lot of tv right now..

If you look here (https://www.pinterest.com/jmchorse/my-work/), you can see what I was working on prior to digging into keycap crafting. Still planning on finishing the OG 151, about halfway through atm.

It sucks to spend the money on that larger amounts, but man the price difference per oz of material.. Gotta do it, or I'd stop experimenting.

Great stuff! Those buckets of silicone bring tears of happiness to my eyes. If I can offer a kind suggestion, I would say to use a platinum-cure silicone (like smooth-cast) instead of OOMOO after you use all of that. The platinum cure is a little more pricey, but lasts so much longer when you have complex or detailed molds that aren't smooth. I used to use OOMOO, and now I'll never go back.

Love your colors! I'll be watching your progress!

I wouldn't see it like that, even with all the knowledge there appears to be a lot of skill and luck involved in great sculpting etc.

I like the retro reference here, and the transition from rough to polished, something I'm trying to do myself.

I think though without a pressure pot, the failures may eventually beat me down. I'll end up buying one and the wife will inevitably divorce me for my keycap madness.

Thinking about modifying under the Topre caps?
Not sure if you can with the DSA one's since they're so low already but I think you could add some thickness under the Topre & bridge the stem to make it stronger :)

Its a balancing act for sure, my wife gets annoyed at times. I try to break up the work though, so sometimes I get most of the evening to work on caps/casting etc and other I don't spend any time casting. That way she gets time together when she wants it, and I still get to work on my hobby. Plus one can sculpt caps while watching tv, so that helps as well.

As for the pressure pot, if you can get one get one they are worth it from a casting perspective. I don't know how Moistgun does it, I would have quit already from frustration if I hadn't acquired one.

Thank you!

I'm 100% certain I'll do something to make the stem more reinforced. I'm sure it'll be a stop gap, until I can spend enough time on it to really get something worth while, but we'll cross that bridge when I get there.

On that note, does anyone know how far the travel is on these switches? How deep do the little divots need to be in order for the key to function properly?

A few blues, sadly the color swirls didn't turn out all that great on one of them. A huge drop of white color fell into the mold, and you can see how white the head is on that one but other than that the blue + red & blue + red + white swirls turned out okay.

First go at a reinforced topre stem. I took the blank I had, and trimmed some qtips and just rammed them in there with a little sculpy on top.

Aside from the bubble I'm fairly happy with it, except for the fact that I didn't leave enough room in the vertical slits for it to fit inside the topre slider!

So, miniature files it is this evening.

Also you can see where the sprue pulled out a little more resin when I broke it off. Next go cut it..

It would not be comfortable to use a pressure pot along with an air compressor in your home, but people do it.

An unsafe pressure pot is just as unsafe in a garage as it is in your bedroom. the only difference at that point is risk of property damage.

imagine if the insurance company knew what you were doing.

These look cool when they aren't on a board, but I think they are a bit overwhelming once they are there. Oh well, just an experiment.

They fit fine if you just take a cast of a regular cap, but the difference between thermoplastic and smoothcast liquidplastic is noticeable. The stem ends up being a little less sturdy because its thinner.

This is why you'll see reinforced stems from artisan makers, it just makes the whole thing much more solid and easier to deal with.

That makes sense, casting resin probably is more brittle as well, with less flex Im assuming...  Im putting in an order with smooth on so I guess Ill see for myself soon enough lol.

So the red and purple ones are the newer slimmer profile. The brown is the original. We've been tossing around the name in the Seattle r/mk meetup slack of Regina.

I actually broke the master when I pulled it out of the mold, so I've been using the red one as the 'new master' and refining that one.

Finally have enough torpe bonks to make new molds. I'll be pouring my first topre mold tonight.

I actually broke the master when I pulled it out of the mold, so I've been using the red one as the 'new master' and refining that one.

Finally have enough torpe bonks to make new molds. I'll be pouring my first topre mold tonight.

First Bonks from the new topre molds. Went for red pupils, black eyes & red body. Didn't turn out quite like I was hoping. Tonight I'll do white pupils, black eyes and red body... aka DEADPOOL

So I got a new batch of resin last night, it cures a little faster and is actually opaque. Finally get to use them tints I bought.. Also may or may not have picked up some fluorescent colors as well. Still figuring out new ratios.

I absolutely love these and the dark blue colour of those whales is perfect for my board...keen for an opportunity to buy these!

And more mold troubles. The first two molds that I made turned out just fine, and now that I'm trying to build a 2 blank mold, I'm having issues with the stems. 3rd try was not the charm :( Time to pickup some pipettes if I can find them locally.

I haven't heard of any artisans degassing resin.  Degassing the silicone is fairly common though, but I don't believe he does.  After pouring the resin, it is usually put a in a pressure pot while setting.

Hey, newbie from reddit here that just joined your raffle.

Wanted to say I read this thread and it was enthralling seeing your progression JT_Sea!
The jump in quality when you started using the pressure chamber, and watching you get better at using glow in the dark powder...
what a fun journey!

I feel very inspired right now, so thank you very much for that.  Can't wait to see where your keycap crafting takes you.

Curious George?

Yup, I've been reading Jude the curious George origin story lately and I wanted to make a cap.

Could also be 'The Fonz'

Jude doesn't watch tv yet, but I'm sure he will be eventually.

I think I'm going to call him Hans, in honor of the author.

I learned a lot reading this.

I'm wondering, do you degas your resin and then degas it again once it is poured into the mold?

I haven't heard of any artisans degassing resin.  Degassing the silicone is fairly common though, but I don't believe he does.  After pouring the resin, it is usually put a in a pressure pot while setting.

Degassing resin is common. I degass before mixing, but usually don't bother after mixing.

The idea is to make the eyes double shot, the test cast didn't turn out very well. He's got one eye on his nose..

Working on the Owl and Monkey still. Getting some masters made for multi casting. And naturally trying out varying color combos every time. You know to see if something fits

The white and black is still my fave owl. The added eyes on monkey are looking good.  They add that definition that helps the 2nd color stay where it should.(something I'm trying to think about now when I make a new design)
I enjoy the clear with shiny dust. Clear with colored eyes would be pretty neat to see... :D
Nice progress, keep it up.

Thanks man, yeah the clear ones turned out better than I thought they would. I'll probably do limited runs of those in future sales.

I do use smoothcast, but I use 326. I have a variety of dyes, some smooth on, some surfboard pigment and some alumilite. They all work well, if you can get the sample pack of smooth on dyes thats a great place to start.

I never realized she was actually a cat until someone pointed it out. She doesn't listen when you call her, she spends 99% of her time under a blanket on the sofa and she doesn't like going outside more than she has to :)
