Cherry MX Silver Switches - Appreciation & Discussion Thread
« on: Thu, 02 March 2017, 15:47:28 »
Revolutionary Cherry Silver switches need a new thread.

They're short and fast (like Halverson) and we need to appreciate them.

RGB information - http://www.cherry.de/cid/keymodules_CHERRY_MX_SPEED_RGB_Silver.htm

Buy them, use them, post about them here.

Gotta go fast!

I really want to try them, with heavier springs.

I need some of you spring nerds to figure out what springs come in these switches, here is the cN:

• Initial force: 30 cN min.
• Actuation force: 45 ± 15 cN

I'd be happy to try some different springs once I figure out which ones to get! :P

I could be wrong but I find it difficult to believe Cherry would invest the money / increase complexity of production by introducing a new size spring.

I have some cherry speeds and they are so light I make a lot of mistakes while typing.  With the short travel they feel lighter than reds.  For gaming they are pretty nice.

They are shorter, I saw a pic the other day comparing on /r/mk but I can't find that so I took one of mine apart.

Update on individual Cherry Silver/Speed switches?

No ETA yet...

FYI

This would be a good candidate for harvesting maybe

https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2166

It should have some resell value between the guts and the caps and not a bunch of led's to desolder...unless you want the fancy RGB ones like digi  :p

The alternative is watching eBay for a good price on a used corsair board

So what makes them "fast", is it just the shorter spring leads to smaller actuation point? It's gotta be something with the stem or metal contacts, otherwise someone would have already made short springs to mod their switches.

Copied this from Tomshardware:

Actuation point on Silvers are 1.2mm compared to 2mm on Reds
Total Travel on Silvers are 3.4mm compared to 4mm on Reds

Now that we know the spring is shorter, I would think it would be safe to assume the stem is also shorter but i don't know for sure.

Well i mean they're out there for sure, I just got a couple of each with my Vortex 22-key switch tester set from Massdrop. Just need to find a source. (this kit also included some of the "new" cherry blacks and a large logo vintage black for comparison... gotta say, cherry did a huge improvement in their new blacks... huge.)

As for the silvers... i can take a pic if you want, they are physically about 1mm shorter to bottom than say a standard red switch.

These switches are no longer exclusive to Corsair and other manufacturers will be marketing them in the future, too, from what I understood.

Oh yeah definitely need this, though I don't like the silencing it reduce key travel also makes key feel more mushy.

But we definitely need MX Silver stem + MX Nature White weight.  :thumb:

Yeah, but I mean the main concept behind jail-house blues was to raise the point of actuation, no? Either way, happy to see more/upgraded variants.

If they are like reds with a shorter travel, wouldn't it be too difficult to make soft typing without bottoming out?

MX Silvers are meant as a gaming switch through and through, so I don't think that's a real concern of the target market.

Exactly I've been doing to raise the actuation point for years.

To me they are, less travel distance = less surface area that could come in contact with each other, this simple math equation should cover it:

2(pi r 2) + (2 pi r)* h

From my experience, the new rgb compatible Cherry switches are also smoother than they used to be.

Appreciation for Cherry catching up with ALPS Electric… except ~25 years later?

Alps SKCM/SKCL always had a higher actuation point (MX Silver) and even got damping (MX Silent) over 20 years ago. In all switches, including tactile.
