[IC] GMK Wizardry
« on: Sun, 30 July 2017, 07:45:04 »
GMK Wizardry
GMK Wizardry is my idea of what a tri-colored keyset could look like.
It uses warm white (CP) and black (N9) as base colors and three vibrant accent colors: blue (N9), purple (DY) and red (RO2).

The color scheme is taken from the DotA hero Invoker and WoW's Mage class.
They feature three elements with the accent colors.

TODO List:
  • Fix render colors (especially white)
  • Fix render legends (to better match GMK legends)
  • Fix modifiers to include icons
  • Renders of popular layouts (60%, TKL, HHKB, 1800, FC660)
  • Novelty keycaps

Edit 9/9/17:
Duck Viper-esque style keyboard render:

What do you think about the new win logo? I think it would be a nice change. Also the alphas seem really bland to me here, will try out more in the coming weeks.

Edit 8/26/17:
New render. Corrected modifier legends. Overall colors are now closer to GMK's color sample photographs.
Also used V1 as red for this, it seems to better fit the fire element to me, what do you think?

Edit 8/24/17:
More
I tried my hands on Blender to create a 3D render of a TKL waering GMK Wizardry.
As this is very new for me I need some time to get the colors right and Icons as well.
Probably going with just Icon mods.

Edit 8/8/17:
More
I looked into more details like compatibility over the weekend.
The following keys should support HHKB, 1800, 75%, US-ISO, UK-US-ISO Hybrid, WKL:

There are obvious errors left in the layout (\ and # ISO keys should be R3, one set of arrow keys should be non-accented)

Question: Should this set support numpad? It doesn't seem to fit to me, maybe you guys have a different opinion?
All the different colors for enters, esc and HJKL seems a bit too much to me now, so I will probably reduce them to a handful of sensable choices, if you agree.

Edit 8/1/17:
More
Do you like the name GMK Wizardry? It's basically the first thing that came to mind, but now I'm thinking GMK Elements would be more neutral and classic sounding, what do you think?

Initial Renders:

Please post any opinions on this, open for any suggestions.

Also, in terms of the name, I think Wizardry suits the set better than elements, especially considering the inspiration behind the set.

Is that a split backspace I see?

I'm definitely in now!

Is it possible to make the icon on the split backspace a little larger?

I think orange instead of red would look better. It would reflect fire better and also give a portal feeling in case you don't run the colored alphas. I like the idea though, I love invoker, even though I suck with him haha

Legends are definitely not final, this is just created with kle-render out of simplicity before contacting GMK to have more agile creation process

So far I think it doesn't make sense to include anything non-essential into the base kit. You can already fill a UK ISO keycap with the preliminary base set.
If enough people want international legends a secondary kit should do the trick that will support many different languages, but I'm not sure which at this point. I have many other things to figure out and think about before internationalization.

Will also try it, I agree it might look very good. If I have renders of each that I am happy with we can better compare them.

digging this special if we could get wasd keys in Red, Blue, Purple!! I like the wizard name also! The colors match it!

Red = Health Potion or Fire
Blue = Mana Potion Ice/Water
Purple = rejuvenation potion. / Arcane

what kinda special where you thinking of including? ... now wondering if any ones done a DND inspired set. :P

I'm not sure what will be the best way to split the keys, but probably all the crazy accents (MOBA-style keys, Invoker spells, WASD) will be in a separate subset.

Novelties; I think it will be best to have say 4+ for each color, such that you could fill F1-4, F5-8 and F9-12 each with a different color. Not sure what imagery I will use, maybe icons of each element that resemble classic spells from either DotA or WoW like meteor, ice block, arcane power.

DnD could also be a nice inspiration to get ideas from, thanks!!

You can already fill a UK ISO keycap with the preliminary base set.

I know it seems inessential for the ANSI master race, but it makes a massive difference for us in the UK to not have to buy an international kit with 30+ extra keys. Adding UK ISO to the base is only 5 extra keys (R1 back tick, 2 and 3, R2 @ And #.

Go on. I'll be your best mate :D either that or ditch the ISO enters from base and make a UK kit 😜

Haha, tbh I am from Germany and would prefer ISO in everything as well, but considering a large portion of the target audience doesn't want/need those keys it would not be a good choice.
My thought was to have US-ISO support to cover ISO with the smallest amount of extra keys, so everybody could at least fill their ISO board with keys, even when legends are not 100% correct, which would be corrected by the extra international set.
Maybe UK ISO is a better default to include in the base set, but I guess I will need to estimate that by a vote at some point.

Really funky in a lovely way, definitely interested. I noticed a/s/r do not have alternate legends, is that firm or are you still working on it? Also, please please consider adding 1u Ctrl and Alt modifiers.

Damn this set looks nice :0  Seems to be really big for a base kit, Id consider moving some of the accents to another kit?  Like the HJKL with arrows and the coloured QWE keys, and coloured arrows with black legends would seem more fitting to me in another "Accent Kit".

Also at least 1x 2u shift would be essential for me and many others, and its only 1 extra key, either in the main kit or an extension kit.  Extension kit could also offer key support for other popular but exotic layouts such as pg up&pg down for tada68 / split spacebar layouts etc.

I'm liking this better. You should also consider adding a blue a, purple s, red d. I'd never use the colored Q or W. But an accent wasd could be interesting.

You can't really divide 3 colors on 4 keys without it looking really weird, I might offer blue WASD, as it is on the very left side of the keyboard, but the MOBA keys will also be included. Even if you don't use them, I think many other people play this type of game.

I never said to remove them. I have no issue with buying them. But they will just collect dust in the tray for many.

My point was the w would be reusable if you did what I suggest.

You would have blue a, purple w and s and red d.

a Blue WASD is fine too, but that means adding 4 keys instead of 3.

That's pretty neat. The windows keys in some of the renders are kind of unappealing though (bright blue on red and vice versa)
