[IC] METEOR by EVE, a 75% custom keyboard (Coming soon!)
« on: Mon, 25 December 2017, 09:36:35 »
Sorry for lack of updates on this project, the PCB took so many time to finish but here we are  :thumb:

The Chinese GB has been fulfilled, and we should expect an International GB very soon. ;)

Hi, ScrambledEggz here.

On behalf of zFrontier and EVE, I present you METEOR.

METEOR is the latest design by EVE, the team that brought you MIRA SE and the MOON.

This GB has been run in China via zFrontier and 100 sets were sold within a very short period of time. And we are planning to bring this beauty to you.

Design:
Meteor is a board with a 60% + F row design. The case is a 3-pcs design with a top case, middle frame and a bottom case. This board will also be using a new pcb by EVE with driver support.

Prototypes (New samples INCOMING! will update soon):
185127-0185129-1
185133-2

Parts:

Top case (60% + F row or HHKB + F row)
Middle frame
Aluminum plate (multiple layout support)
Bottom case
Weight (Aluminum, could upgrade to BRASS)
PCB
Custom keyboard bag

PCB Features:

EVE & EQUALZ Driver support
Left sided Mini USB
Multiple backlighting effects
Multiple layout support (arrow cluster layouts supported!)

Color Options:
***Some samples have unprocessed brass weight installed, the brass weights in the final products will have a brushed finish.

Is the black exterior and gold interior an option? you have it in the prototype picture.

This is the Kikyounezu, the warm ambient light made the interior seemed gold.

No arrow keys?

No dedicated arrow cluster, but the 60% area does support layouts with arrow keys. I will upload the layout support in OP :thumb:

This has to be the best layout along with the 1800. Looks great.

There are a few on the zF posts.

in some Mira update pics you can see the protos from the side, but in the background.

BTW, any chance we could have samples of the brushed brass weight before this goes to GB?

Being a ZFrontier Group buy makes this an automatic yes for me. Great company, quick responses to e-mails and more. 100% confidence in these guys.

Is it possible to choose solid colors? Like all grey, all red, etc?

Any chance we’d have the option to purchase extra plates and PCB’s? Coated brass switch plates?

Edit: Just had to say, that Navy/ Blue-Grey looks AMAZING!

No dedicated arrow cluster, but the 60% area does support layouts with arrow keys. I will upload the layout support in OP :thumb:

Forgive the likely newb question, but what difference does it make NOT having a dedicated arrow cluster, yet the layout still supports it? Any drawbacks/advantages? Thanks.

I suspect the comparison is to traditional 75% boards. Realistically this is more 70% since it drops the row on the right.

On a standard 75%, there is 1 more row which gives room for a dedicated arrow cluster while maintaining relatively normal layouts.

This board doesn't have that extra row, so you would instead have to use a 60% arrow layout and do some more unusual things (such as ?/ to the right of shift and up). Still dedicated arrows though.

I think his wording is just confusing.

Sorry for the confusion.

By saying dedicated arrow cluster, I mean that this board does not have an default or stand-alone area for arrow keys like a 65%, 75%(84), or even 80% do.

However, Meteor does support arrow cluster by altering from a normal 60% layout  :thumb:

Here is the solution:

a. keep the 2.25u left shift and move the ?/ to far right

a. is shown in the render below :thumb:

Looks really good, Was never into the 75% layout, but this looks a bit better to me. It might just be how the F-row looks, but the board itself certainly catches the eye. Any chance of having a bit more options for colors or are the colorways locked down to what the original sets are?

Dang I was sold on the HHKB layout but with this arrow support I might have to rethink that.

I can't tell if any of the colours would be a good match for GMK Laser... the blue looks too muted, the red would clash I think, and pink is the wrong tone. Silver seems to be the best bet.

I would also vote for black... or at the very least a dark grey inside and black surround, and/or vice versa. The all silver is a touch light for my tastes personally.

I just wish there was some sort of darker plate and/or a brass plate.

I almost always hate silver colored plates >_<

An update regarding colors:

The color options provided in OP are recommended combinations,
you can create your own color combination but only within the colors available in the provided samples

you can choose from the following 8 options for your top & bottom case, middle frame and alu weight insert
Black, Pale Ink (from pale ink), Gray (from Kikyounezu), Silver, Blue (from Kikyounezu), Pink, Gold (from gold ink), and Red

:thumb: so yes, it is possible for all B L A C C

Any chance of split space bar support? Would be beneficial for such type of layout imo.

Sorry guys, no solid update from EVE due to their schedule to fulfill the Miras and Moons first and then came the CNY holidays. Will definitely get back to you once we have some update materials. :thumb:

Thats a super sweet 75% will this be a limited number run like the Chinese group buy? Wording made it sound like it was limited to just 100 units. Are can we expect this to be a full group buy with unlimited number of units.

This board will also be using a new pcb by EVE with driver support.

What color is EVE hoping to make the PCB?

Unsure if this GB will still be ongoing or not for non-China peeps.

Checked zfrontier website, and the Meteor was limited to 100 sets and only distributed in China.

That was for the Chinese GB, its currently under production last I heard from Eve. This IC is for the international crowd and is currently pushed back until the Chinese GB is complete.

(Attachment Link)
Which colours are in the bottom keyboard here? Black and blue? Or Pale Ink and Black?

How will color combos/customization be handled?

I revisited the color combo/customization idea with EVE and it will be a super arduous job if we allow people to choose colors freely since that will create tons of SKUs and will be difficult when sorting. So we are back with the standard color combos.

Is it possible to not have the "Meteor" and "designed by EVE crew" engravings on either the aluminium insert or the brass weight (as stated on zfontier)? I feel that they conflict with the case's minimalist design.

It's the Gold Ink one, the Gold is very saturated, so looking orange-ish in darker light settings. And much brighter and more yellowish when fully lit.

It's the Gold Ink one, the Gold is very saturated, so looking orange-ish in darker light settings. And much brighter and more yellowish when fully lit.

Any possibility of a brass plate option, or color other than silver?

A totally pale-inked one would be nice. May be EVE should offer some one-coloured options...

Really love this but if it came without the engravings on the weight, it could've been even classier.

I take it there's no word on a possible brass plate option? I know the gb is already started but I'd definitely be willing to buy one separately if need be.

This may be one of the most tempting boards to buy right now... Having a hard time deciding if it looks better with or without the blockers. Great work :D

sorry to nag, but is there any word on an engravingless option? if that's not possible (i understand it's late in the process) then how easy (if possible) are the engravings to remove?

I think that was the China buy, couldn't find anything on a buy for USA or other locations.

If it's live right now why hasn't this IC thread been closed and a new thread opened in the Group buy forum? Very confusing.
