Is it only me, or the mod's legends look darker and more saturated than the alpha's?

I think it's just the light because a bunch of the mods are printed on spacebar profile caps, but I'll see for sure when they get here.

XDA just emailed me these pictures

I'll take more photos when the samples arrive in Ireland.

These were just printed on some spare blanks so some legends are in the wrong places, but it should give a good idea of the dye sub quality ;D

Oh my.

Looking great.

Wow the samples look really good. Surprisingly good on such quick response time. Really can't wait for this GB.

Hopefully, that is the explanation, because the alpha's legends look like dark gray more than black.

Looks pretty good. Only criticism I would have, are the -, +, =, <, > symbols. They look out of place, like it's a different font size.  Think it would look a lot more uniform if they matched with other symbols, similar to Varmilo.

You're the creative one here -- and doing a fabulous job!!

One nit pick, it seems like the + and = could be a bit more "oblique"...
Less this: = +

and more this:  = +

or this:  = +

Love the set regardless!

Looks great. Very loyal to the original AEK set (yes, even the weirdly-looking symbols). The tiny "Alt" printing seems a bit too bold but still readable to me. I think you nailed the white pantone too.

What's the optimistic ETA for when the sample arrives at your door and the official GB opening?

As nguyenhimself said, the weird symbols are meant to match the ones on the AEK. The *-_+=|\ / characters on the original aren't oblique (IDK why) so I've just been trying to match them.

...

...

I noticed the alt too. The alt in my files is pretty bold too, so I will tweak that to make the final one a little bit thinner.

The Pantone colour isn't even matched for these samples, this is just XDA's stock light grey colour :)). Although it does look very close in the photos.

Samples should arrive here in around two weeks, I'll take some more photos and do some comparisons with my renders. I'll send some keys to Quaddepos to compare the dye sub quality with Canvas (he has Canvas, I don't). I'll probably make a few small tweaks to the legends based on the samples. After that I think I just need to organise all the details with the vendors and stuff. So optimistic timeline is maybe a month, pessimistic timeline is if the vendors/XDA are busy and I have to wait a while for other groupbuys to run first.

Thank god, I was a bit worried about the colour of the keycaps but will wait for the colour-matched samples. Others have pointed out the tiny 'alt' being too bold, I think ⌘ is also too bold compared to your render, please check and confirm. Other than that, the legend looks awesome  :thumb: And 1 last thing, the enter/return button is horribly tilted

Very excited for the GB to come  :))

I'll double check all the legends, don't worry ;D. The legends came out a tiny bit thicker anyway when I converted my SVG's to AI's for some reason, so that may be part of the problem. Regardless, when the samples arrive I'll take some proper top-down photos which should be a bit easier to compare and fix.

For the return key I'm assuming they were too lazy to properly insert the Costar stabs for a quick photo :)).

Please check the following international keys:

In the international kit the following keys appear to be missing:

9)
0=
{[ ^
}] `

And the following keys are missing the third symbol:
'? \
+* ~

The double key \| is redundant.

9) and 0= should be there, unless I uploaded a bad kit layout image.

I'm leaving out all 3rd legends because it cuts down on keys and it looks cleaner IMO. So [{ and ]} are both in the base alphas, and the '? and +* keys were designed without the tertiary legends.

The second \| key is to fill an ISO keyboard without the ISO kits, since both ISO keys output \ on a US layout ;D .

Edit: 9) and 0= are there.

Alright, but the ANSI brackets keys cannot be properly used in other layouts where the primary keys are the curly brackets and not the square ones.

For the international kit I'm supporting NorDe + Spanish layout. The kit should include all the red and orange keys here. The yellow keys only have different tertiary legends so I'm not including them, and the white keys are same as ANSI.

What does everyone think about doing F-keys up to F18? Maybe an add-on kit? I've seen some Mac-focused keyboards that make use more f-keys like this one:

Nah, Varmilo just didn't want to print the Mac's media keys on top. macOS barely uses any F keys, let alone all the way to F18.

I have a couple programable boards that by default generate F13, F14, F15 for the Print Screen, Scroll lock, and Pause keys.
It seems nice, but not a requirement.

There's an XDA Oblique-shaped hole in my wallet. And the money is itching to get out...

I'm already thinking of the keyboards I'll build for this set.

When can we get more photos? Any chance of A/B-ing the colours with an AEKii set?

Thanks

Just came to my mind: would you plan to add the strange D and K homing keys with the nipple like the Apple keyboard?

XDA doesn't have homing nips, but there are scooped D and K keys in the homing kit.

What does everyone think about doing F-keys up to F18? Maybe an add-on kit? I've seen some Mac-focused keyboards that make use more f-keys like this one:

https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2765

Given that Apple removed all F keys from the latest Macbooks, I can't see any software really using them. Only Apple's fullsize keyboard actually has those keys. The only use for those is if you remap them, in which case legends don't really matter anyway.

I have a couple programable boards that by default generate F13, F14, F15 for the Print Screen, Scroll lock, and Pause keys.
It seems nice, but not a requirement.

Print Screen, Scroll Lock and Pause are only secondary legends on the F13, 14, & 15 keys in the base mods kits ;D. AFAIK they use the same keycodes, so any keyboard will generate F13-15 on Mac.

...

When can we get more photos? Any chance of A/B-ing the colours with an AEKii set?

...

When the keys arrive here I'll take more photos. These samples are not colour matched, these are just some spare blanks in XDA's stock grey colour :)).

Homing F and J are in the Katakana Alphas kit. Other homing keys won't be added since I can't support every possible combination. If I did I'd have to add katakana ISO kits and katakana vim arrows too.

I know you mentioned that some of the glyphs were different from the AEK in the original post, but it wasn't until I saw the samples that I realized how odd the J looks. Is there any way the J could be tweaked to look more like the J on the AEK?

Yep, I'll try and tweak as many of them as possible before before submitting the designs for production. You should've seen it like two months ago, back then it wasn't just the J that looked awful :))

Those kind of layouts are exactly why I created the blanks kit :)) .

F13-15 are what Apple calls print screen, scroll lock, and pause; so you'd need up to F16-20 to support your Cinque. I don't think there is really enough demand to warrant adding those keys, so you'll have to do with blanks or novelties I'm afraid.

F13-15 are what Apple calls print screen, scroll lock, and pause; so you'd need up to F16-20 to support your Cinque. I don't think there is really enough demand to warrant adding those keys, so you'll have to do with blanks or novelties I'm afraid.

That's definitely a benefit of the XDA profile.

An HHKB custom render would be awesome! (X60, Duck Viper etc.)
Could you do a tkl?
40% :-)
LZ CLSm 75% please?
1800 and 96k layout or either of them if that won't bother you any, many thanks!
KBD75. ;) haha
RAMA M60-A!!!
Please generate a render of Katakana alphas & base icon modifiers in TKL layout. I know I want base icon modifiers but not sure if base alphas or katakana is better for it. Thank you

I've added the last few renders to the OP, all of these should be there now. I might redo a couple of them, some of them don't look quite as nice as I thought they did when I made them :)).

I'm working on a custom build with a weird layout right now and seriously wish this set is out already.

I'm also working on a custom build right now and plan on putting Oblique on it ASAP.  Can't wait for this set to complete :)

Collected the samples from the sorting office today, and there's way more keys than I expected ;D. They did both base and katakana alphas, and both text and icon mods. These were printed on leftover keys so some keys are a bit warped, some have smudges, and most of the mods are on spacebar profile keys.

I'll take some proper photos tomorrow in daylight, and I'll do a proper comparison with my AEK too at some stage. For now, here's the best my phone's camera could do ;D.
