Any Split Backspace TKLs?
« on: Wed, 13 June 2018, 20:26:34 »
I like TKLs. I like HHKBs. Now my brain is convincing me that I should make this monstrosity exist: a TKL with a 7u spacebar, split shift and split backspace.

Want to see if anyone has done a split backspace on their TKL to get the the HHKB backspace position. If so, please post picture, I'm curious to see what these look like in the wild. Bonus points if you did a split right shift as well.

Thanks, Sifo! I actually really like this layout for a TKL.

An option for a split Backspace is practically a requirement for DIY kits these days.

Mass-produced keyboards may have the same design for both ISO and Japanese, with support for dividing the 2u Backspace into 1u ¥ and Backspace keys. You can't be sure that the controller is in on it until you have tried shorting the ¥ key. It might not have a diode either.
I have made firmware crash and become unresponsive until power cycled by shorting switch positions that it didn't support, so you should unplug it afterwards in case something in its memory has been overwritten.

Both the KBDFans 8X (TKL) and 19X (1800) have split backspaces and split shifts. And since you can pick the switches and soldering service in one place, I'd consider it practically off-the-shelf.

Very interesting topic. In the tkl sector there is an annoying lack of standards, so it's very difficult to buy interchangable pcbs and cases.

I hope that you get a ton of suggestions.

I don't know if these are compatible:

Some great community members and I worked on a TKL pcb compatibility list. Take a quick look, might help a bit.

WOW. That's brilliant. I'll print it as soon as I get to the office.

Thanks for the great contribution.

This is exactly the thing that sparked this idea in my head. I was looking at the supported layouts for that, and got really curious.
