Hypnosis
« on: Sat, 30 July 2022, 13:55:19 »
What are the chances hypnosis could be used to implant the idea that I really want to be a [whatever] and in doing so giving me something to work towards in life?  Searching finds questionable tales from the bedroom as well as people trying to sell you ways to look inside but if it can cure smoking in a couple of sessions this sounds like it should be easy.

Thoughts?

I don't know, smoking is a behavior and you are asking about going much deeper than that.

When I read a your post, I could not help but think about a movie : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inception
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

the brain is a machine,  following that,  there are mechanisms for overriding any pre-existing circuits.

but, the problem with happiness is that it leads no where in the modern context.

for example, many people who do very repetitive/ tough/ painful jobs smoke cigarettes, drink massive amounts of coffee, alcohol, drugs, etc.

That is the hijacking of our biology which allows _the job_ to continue despite the pointless waste of life that it is.

The existential futility is the periods of sobriety, but most humans do not exist in this state much before their next injection ala happiness_industries..

Humanity chases an abstraction of progress, we're not really sure this works,  The Earth Ecosystem has about 20-50 years left. We're in the last leg of this 6th extinction (Holocene).

You might be looking for Ayahuasca guided therapy.   This stuff is, mmmm... it's a shortcircuiting of multiple brain areas.  a very crude/ top down analysis would suggest,  well this is as much of the BIG PICTURE as our machinery is capable of.    but there's not alot of formal science  "YET"..

You can sign up though... war on drugs shut down the research, but it's been reopened.

Wow, commercialised shamanism - I like it.  Definitely up for that when it's legal, whether here or somewhere else I happen to be.

Sounds interesting, I've never seen it.  Something in the back of my head says it's really long...

Mike Tyson mentioned in an interview that he used to get hypnotized by his coach and another as a teenager and they'd tell him during it how powerful he was and how well he'd fight. Ofc the training was the main thing but he did mention how it enforced his mindset.

How effective something like that is compared to more everyday conscious mental strength building idk.

Hypnosis, therapy, anti-depressant drugs: I strongly believe they all could work — if applied the right way, for getting you into a state in which you are strongly susceptible to suggestion.

I have seen it.

I'm not so sure about that.  Drugs could help with depression but I see that as a symptom so not worth treating - if I'm happy at work I wont avoid people after and if I'm busy I don't have time to feel down.  Similarly a therapist can make you believe in yourself but that's not a problem either, if I wanted to be a brain surgeon I could* but I don't have any desire to.  I don't want anything specific and without a target it's hard to do anything other than instant gratification in time away from un-fun work.  Hypnosis seems to be the only one that could hit the actual problem but you're right, it would have to be done by a really trusted therapist.  Or perhaps one in Australia that I would never see again so would get no benefit from "installing" something dodgy.

It's legal
Maybe for you but you can have a gun too - class A so life sentence for distribution which is surely what getting people to pay to come to a session would be.

*Time and money for training would be an issue, not lack of ability or fear of killing people.

Drugs could help with depression

There is a great deal of difference between the one-time psychedelic session and the pills that you swallow every morning.

Practitioners describe the psychedelic experience as a reset of sorts.

Indeed, anti-depressants were mentioned in the bit I quoted.  The shamanic reset sounds great but it's illegal here so not really an option.
