Linear switch recommendations for Geon Frog TKL ?
« on: Fri, 15 October 2021, 21:15:21 »
Hi folks,

I successfully bought a Frog TKL yesterday. The DYI kit will arrive within a week. I bought both FR4 and aluminum plates. However, I think I'll be using FR4 if I don't see any specific reason to use aluminum plate.

Currently, all my linear keebs are Tealios V2 and Gateron Ink Black V2. (Also, few Cherry MX Reds and Blacks) I'm a linear lover.

I was thinking perhaps I should try some different linear switch. And since the PCB is soldered version, I don't think I'll be changing switches too often (if at all).

I'll be lubing switches with Krytox 105 and apply Deskeys switch films.

I'd greatly appreciate if you guys can recommend linear switches other than Tealios and Ink Black.

Thanks.

Why switch from something you already love? I just buy Gateron milky top black bottom switches for like 13 cent and spring swap with lube they feel fantastic. I made a mistake wasting so much money on expensive switches especially on expensive linear switches.

I don't know how much difference once can find in the linear realm. It seems to me most linear switches basically try to achieve the same feeling, with some doing better at it (smooth, tight) and some worse (scratchy and/or excessive stem wobble). Though I guess bottom-out feeling and spring type still leaves some room for variety.

I've been very impressed with the Ajazz/Huano Banana (tactile) switch. Its linear cousin, the Kiwi, has recently come out. Like the banana, it has a very long (21.5mm) spring, which might make it feel a bit different. Or you could try a silenced linear for a softer bottom out. The silent Alpaca is the smoothest I've personally tried.

Why not try a Frog linear on a Frog TKL?

https://www.ashkeebs.com/product/momoka-frog-linear-switches/

They are actually quite smooth and nice out-of-box.

Although TBH, Durock Lavender is probably great. Mid-weight 65 G linears are often great. I like Mauves and the SP Star midweight linears. SP Star Nana was incredible, although I am biased towards nylon housings [even though they are less smooth].

Volny is right about banana. It's a memorable tactile, if nothing else. Very snappy, not an MX Brown, but still light. Bad stock sound, though.

Gateron milky clear are the worst switches that I've ever purchased.
https://keys.my/gateron-milky-clear-switch/

The stem or the housing have some kind of defect, so while you press it, it gets stuck midway, like completely stuck...

After some thousands of actuations, the problem solved itself. And no, it's not the keycaps' fault.
