Stupid Reinheitsgebot ruinig all the fun here in Germany. Good thing our Belgian neighbors don't give a **** about that stuff and produce some very interesting beers instead.

Been cycling yesterday and found a very good beer shop like 20km away from home. That's not how sport is supposed to work...

How did you like the one behind the LaTrappe?

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Enjoying the Stone Go-To IPA right now.  Also super excited to find Firestone's Wooky Jack being sold in 12 oz. bottles.  I love that stuff, but a 22 oz. was always a bit much.

Franziskaner isn't that bad. Granted it's unremarkable but there are much worse weiss. Keep in mind it's really tough to get a lot of the best ones outside Germany. Many simply don't even export. Hell even some you can't find in a different region inside Germany very easy.

That's right, but I really wouldn't recommend a Franziskaner. Generic Hefeweizen brewed with cheap ingredients. If you can come by a Unertl, Hopf, Gutmann or Jacob that's the way to go. Weihenstephan, Schneider and Maisels are usually wider available and a huge improvement over the Franziskaner/Paulander/Erdinger league.

Went to the German bar tonight. They had some Unertl but only dark varieties so I didn't try one... so I copped out and just drank a bunch of Schneiders since I already know those are good. Also, while not German I finally got to try some Mikkeller. Was NOT impressed for beers that cost $9 for a .33l. I also tried some Veltins which I thought to be one of the worst beers I have ever had... and some Reissdorf kölsch which I thought to be decent enough, but it was like my 9th beer so I can't really make a proper opinion of it.

Try the Unertl. It's great, and as far as I know they don't have a pale version, their "standard" hefeweizen is just darker then most other breweries' hefeweizen. It's a bit darker then Schneiders Tap7, and if you like that you'll like the Unertl too.

As for Kölsch the Reissdorf is one of the most popular brands here in Germany, but also one of the most boring and steamlined. Of the popular brands I'd prefer Früh, but that's also nothing really special. Chances are you can get a Mühlen Kölsch as they also sell bottles, which I would recommend in this case. If you ever get to cologne try Pfaffen and Päffgen, the two best Kölsch breweries by far.

Also keep an eye out for the Kölsch's archenemy the Düsseldorfer Alt. The smaller house-brewerys like Schlüssel, Uerige and Füchschen produce great beers and sell it in bottles, too.

Veltins, Krombacher, Warsteiner, Becks (and many more) are to Pilsener what Franziskaner is to Hefeweizen.

Franziskaner isn't that bad. Granted it's unremarkable but there are much worse weiss. Keep in mind it's really tough to get a lot of the best ones outside Germany. Many simply don't even export. Hell even some you can't find in a different region inside Germany very easy.

I'm pretty sure that some of them should be available overseas, if not I can proxy you a bottle or two  ;)

They have some varieties of Uerige there. None of the others you listed sound at all familiar from their menu. I'll make sure to try both that and the Unertl next time provided I am in the mood for darker beers.

Try do drink their Altbier if they have it at your place. Word of warning: If you're more into mild beers the Uerige won't be for you as it's VERYVERY hoppy (is that even a word?). I like it though, especially because of that.

I like most styles, it just depends on my mood on a particular day if I want light, dark, hoppy, sweet, sour, bitter, whatever. Ultra hoppy is very popular in the USA right now. It's actually hard to avoid over hopped IPA, or other styles with that characteristics from domestic craft breweries. Otherwise if not very hoppy IPA based sour saisson is the other very popular type. Those types are so popular that at some bars you pretty much have to order an import if you don't want one of those.

Still sounds better than the regular German (at last where I live, I think they have more of the good local stuff in the south) bar where you have to stick to the Veltins and Franziskaner generic kind of beer. Some bars though start to specialize in good beer styles and not long ago a small crafting brewery opened up in my city which beer is being sold in a bar in my street now. So the trend is positive.

I'd really like to taste some of the American crafting beers as many of them look really interesting, but these are a pain to get here.

I'm curious as to whether it would be worth it to start a whisk(e)y/scotch/bourbon thread. The only single malt that I have on hand currently is Kilchoman's Machir Bay. I am waiting until the end of the year to replenish my stock of Lagavulin.

On topic: I picked up Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale a couple days ago and it was a great introduction to the brewery. I'll have to look out for singles next time I go to the store to explore more of their offerings.

Joker Hard Cider. Very crisp, and despite it being above average APV tastes distinctly smoother than most any other hard ciders I have tried.  :thumb:

Mmmmmm that looks good, there is a local cider here in Michigan called Vandermill that is 6.9% and is delicious, they have a bunch of different varieties too.
Gotta collect them all

She opted out of it.  I don't blame her.  It's a ton of beer to finish in one sitting.  The mug stands about 20 inches tall.

Ha I almost didn't put my pseudonym.  I mean it's sort of a social club and they're going to know me as Binge.  Oh well!  I get to keep the mug, so it'll be part of my GH paraphernalia
