Introducing my new project, Mech27! This is the Mech27-TKL.

The Mech27 project is something that I've been wanting to do for a while and I've already had some great preliminary feedback.

More renders (http://imgur.com/a/EMh1M)

So What's It Made Of?

Good question!  The Mech27-TKL is made of CNC milled aluminum and anodized in a selection of colours, with a 2mm thick acrylic mid-piece in a frosted colour to show off the beautiful side/case lighting on the PCB.  The plate, also anodized aluminum, is waterjet cut.

Gimme Some Deets

Angle: 8°
Material: Aluminum, Acrylic, and Brass
PCB: A.87 Compatible - I'll be using the Leeku TX87
Layouts supported:
ISO, split left and right shifts, and stepped capslock are supported as well as the standards.
Colours: See below
Price: Working on a new estimate.

Parts I'll Be Supplying
Case, plate, PCB, PCB mount Cherry stabilizers, and a maple candy.

Parts You Need to Supply
Switches, switch leds, a cable, and keycaps.

Extra Info and Thanks
Orders will be limited to 100 boards

I'm raising some money for a prototype, and the factory I've been in contact with is currently flooded with orders so I may have to wait a month or two before placing an order for it.  I have an outdated design on the way, which will be an indicator of quality and colour.

Big thanks to Yuksti for the TGR Jane files the Mech27-TKL is based on, Photekq, Rama, and Joey for their awesome feedback, and everyone else who has been involved with this in some way.  Files will be open sourced and free for use after the group buy concludes.

If there are any questions feel free to ask and I'll try my best to answer.

Update 1: Colours
More
POLL CLOSED.  Results below

With my powers of authority, I declare that the Mech27-TKL will be made in Black, Silver, Grey, Brass, and Cyan colours.

Grey is a medium grey, possibly Battleship Grey(?)
Black is black.
Silver is silver.
Brass is a darker gold colour. (Champagne gold)
Cyan is straight up cyan.

Update (Old Renders)
More
I have an aluminum prototype of an old, outdated design on the way, but it should be a good indicator of quality and anodization.  I'll try to take some really nice pictures once it arrives.

Amazing work 27, all the hard work and effort that you put into learning the software and producing the CAD has paid off - 100% know that you'll be able to pull it off and deliver a solid product! Keep up the great work mate, and can't wait to see what the future holds with your creations!

Will there be enough height to assemble the board without the diffuser? LEDs are fun for about five seconds.

No pics of it blown up sorry, and no logos or branding except for the hidden "27" on the plate.

No there won't be, but I've been considering offering an opaque option of acrylic in a few colours.

PCB being used is mentioned in the "Gimme the deets" section of the OP.

It's the GON NerD TKL, so fully programmable.

Will there be a logo of any sort on it? I guess I'm looking for some unique features other than the acrylic mid piece that says that this board is a Mech27 and not a generic aluminum board. Definitely a cool project and I can't wait to see it! Seems like you got a lot of support already  :thumb:

Found a very cooperative factory in China.  Prototypes are a must, and if they're horrible, I'll find somewhere else.

Good to see a designer protect superior aesthetics.

If there is an option for an opaque or unfrosted clear acrylic insert - count me in.

And if you don't mind sharing, what was the color you had in mind for yours?

I've been thinking either the brass colour, so I can have a board identical to the render, or pink, because pink.

Need to get a prototype first, and that could be 1-3 months since the factory is backed up, then I'll need to figure out packaging and how to collect money.  I really can't give a solid time yet.

And yes diodes and resistors will be assembled.

Looking great mate! Obviously if the price isn't substantial I reckon go for it :) You may need to radius the corners on those hexagons so the inner corner (on the enclosure) can be properly machined, but yeah, looks sweeet!

Post by: FrostyToast on Tue, 19 April 2016, 21:40:19
That weight will be expensive. The Mira had to change from a single piece weight to using 3 connected pieces.
That change allowed each piece of the weight to have very simple cuts.
Machining that piece from one slab will be quote expensive and it will be unwise to separate them into multiple pieces. Those hexagons have to be oriented properly to fit in the case and therefore cannot be cut as separate pieces and screwed down unless the threads are precisely machined.

I'll also look at different materials for it, other than brass.

Stainless steel is the second most poplar weight material.
Also, do listen to Rama about having rounded off edges for the hexagons.
Due to the bits of cnc machines being circular, inner cuts have to be rounded at a minimum equal to the radius of the bit.

The rectangular portion of the weight is the topside which is only visible when you open up the case and take our the PCB.
The hexagons are what appear on the underside of the case; it's just one single weight.

What FrostyToast said.  They're the same piece, just different sides of it.  The larger rectangular part is inside the case, and will only be seen with the top removed.

Even more new renders!

This time I decided to render the weight as stainless steel, just to get an idea of how it would look.  I believe that this is the final revision before I get a prototype.  I'll try to get ballpark costs of it in a groupbuy when I place the order for a prototype. I also updated the detailing on the weight, with a maple leaf, because Canada.

Loving the HEX shapes and of course your Canadian Leaf which is something to like, in a world still worshiping the Stars and Stripes and Union Jacks.

Hope your keyboard becomes a reality here, we can never have too much TKL love on GH Central  8) .

hey look, perspective renders! yay!

If that gray-looking piece is a PC diffuser, you may need to consider filling the insides with it in order to get under-PCB light to diffuse properly. Otherwise you might have an issue getting even light, with the screw holes in the way, depending on rgb placement etc.

also hopefully you plan to have your plate support switch top removal!

I'm not quite sure where you'd want that on the board.  I can't do individually numbered boards, so it would be the same  across all of them.

I'm really starting to get my heart set on this keyboard. For those that have joined GB for custom TKLs with a limited number of spots, how hard do you think it is going to be to get into this buy? I guess I should start keeping a very close eye on the group buys forum.

It actually looks lighter than most golds I have seen.
Champagne gold is a pale light variant of gold. Perhaps the lighting in the renders is off.

Right now it's looking like it'll be very similar to champagne gold, but I'll try to see if there's some way to get a color sample.  Cyan and the Brass/Gold are custom colours, so it's not like there's preexisting samples :(

Got a pic from the factory of the V0.01 board, which does not match the design I've been showing off.

Anodization and milling quality looks alright in the picture. I'll take some shots detailing any issues once I receive it.  Obviously this won't be telling of the latest design, but it will be telling of quality and ability to colour match.

:-*  I changed it a bit, but probably not enough.

Don't worry.
Just take a look at Photek's TEK-80 and you'll feel a little better about your giant front lip.

It's a modified version of his TEK-80, so it might not be much better haha.

Pictures as promised

There were a couple of problems.
Dent from shipping (ignore splotches on the right, my lens was a little dirty):

and scratches from anodizing clips or maybe when handling it for packaging:

Overall I'm very happy with the finish where it's not scratched, and the don't appear to be any machining marks on the outer faces.

Keep in mind this is not the design I have been showing off, and should just be regarded as a sample piece of the factory's quality.

Just a quick update.

Factory is working on a large order, so I'm waiting a bit to get final quotes on the new design both in GB and prototype.  Once I get said quote, I'll likely open up some sort of $30-$50 preorder that reserves your spot (limited in quantity of course).

Also I decided to simplify the side profile a bit.

I've sent the files to the manufacturer, so now I'm waiting on prices for the board.

Good news: I have quotes done on custom packaging foam, and it seems to be pretty reasonable :)

I'm considering using sprit pcbs instead of gon, due to a lot of people's concern over gon's lack of communication.  I would use WKL, but the A.87 does not support underlight...

Will he be doing diodes? My MX TX87 was already done, but the Alps one I got I had to do myself.

If not maybe theyre something you can source for a cheaper price for everyone. Then again there is the whole cylinder vs rectangle debate.

Similar to the underlighting on the winkeyless.kr b-series boards.  It's rgb leds on the bottom side of the pcb.

Quick update

I have a price for the GB maximum order quantity, which will be 100 boards.  It'll be $280USD (Includes a $10 donation to GH) + PP fees (2.9% + $0.30) + shipping (~$35 CONUS, ~$60 International)

I'm working on the price for the MOQ, which is 50 boards. I don't expect it too cost too much more than the 100.

All boards will come in a stamped cardboard box with all components inside of a plastic bag and encased in custom cut foam.  I'll provide a business card with your order details and the number out of 100 that your board is.

I'll be opening up limited deposits (20 people) in order to help finance a new prototype once I receive the price on 50 units. The deposit is a $35 minimum, but you're more than welcome to put down more, since it's helping get the next prototype made.  Those who put a deposit down will be able to reserve the number board of their choosing.

The Groupbuy Will Not Open Until Mid-September
I will be moving September 2nd, and will need to figure out shipping to myself in dorms.

How to make deposit?

Quick update

I have a price for the GB maximum order quantity, which will be 100 boards.  It'll be $300USD (Includes a $10 donation to GH) + PP fees (2.9% + $0.30) + shipping (~$35 CONUS, ~$60 International)

I'm working on the price for the MOQ, which is 50 boards. I don't expect it too cost too much more than the 100.

Is it a true deposit? That is we get the final price - our deposit, or do we pay final price + deposit?

PRICING CORRECTION

At 100 units it will be $280, not $300.  I left an additional entry in my spreadsheet in my calculation by mistake.

Hey guys, just a quick update.

Prices are:
100 - $280
50 - $300

Unfortunately there will be an additional $20-$30 per order to help cover freight from the factory to me.

I won't be opening the deposit form for a couple of days due to a death in the family early this morning and now I have to help sort that out.  I'll update as soon as I know when I'm going to be taking the deposits.

Will you ever consider Winkey layouts or is this exclusively WKL?

v1 is winkeyless only.  v2 might be winkey, whenever that happens.

I really don't care about the number because I have discovered, in my previous endeavors, that reserving numbers for boards is a dumb idea.
I just put 1/1/1 down so I'll probably end up with some other random number.

I believe the rep told me 3-4 weeks, but it may be more due to using a couple of custom colours for anodizing. Also I need to figure out how to receive the 50-100 from the airport since that's as far as their freight will take it. If anyone has experience with receiving large shipments pm me please.

Looking promising, I'm still in two minds about WKL but from the look of the plate it looks like there is split right shift support right? If there is then I've got no issues  :thumb:

There is split shift support.  You'd better be on board for this, you put a deposit down!  :))

I just noticed one of the holes on the switch plate is enlarged (position near the spacebar stabiliser), is there anything special about this switch position?

Erm... I just noticed that too.  I may have goofed on the design somehow... This is what prototypes are for!

EDIT: Files are fine, I'll talk to the manufacturer.  I was a little bit drunk when I looked it over last night so I somehow missed that.

I'm going to get one of the weights polished to compare.  I'm moving 650km on Sept 2nd, so I'm going to be holding off on shipping it until I have a shipping address in dorms.

I can't decide. Should I join Mech27 gb or wait for Mira. If Mech27, black or silver case would be a safe choice to match with keycaps, but this gold case is just gorgeous. What keycaps set would fit it well?

Alright I'm talking with the manufacturer, seems like it was a toolpath issue that caused the hole.  I'm going to receive those plates as-is since I'd prefer to have them sooner rather than later, and they'll fix the issue for the full run :)

(Yes I'm being reimbursed for the mess-up)

Every package will be sent with tracking if possible. I've never had any problems with them, and it seems like the strike crisis has been avoided :)

No.

I'll be trying to get orders opened sometime next week after I receive the prototypes, but may postpone it so I can wrap up my Fosen switch groupbuy.

What are everyone's thoughts on having delivery in December?  The lack of storage and transportation here in Ottawa may be a huge limitation, but if I send everything to my parents I could have it all shipped out in mid December when I return after the semester.  This is just an idea, and I definitely want to know what you think.  If I did this I'd be able to complete the groupbuy much more reliably, but obviously there would be a longer wait time.

I kinda assumed it'd be around December anyway. The only bad thing about December is it's near Christmas, so there will be a loooot of mail. (Not sure if that's really an issue)

Delay on the opening of the GB stage is good for me  :thumb:

December is fine too, I am quite busy with work so even if it gets here early I wouldn't have the time to build it.

Agreed. many lost package because long holiday (chris - new year)
for international orders its better to sent it early december or early january
avoid mid to late december. I remember buy caps from pmk on mid december it takes 2-3 month to arrive
And i buy caps from pmk again on early january it only takes 10 days

Can comfirm that. Even within Europe shipping is fd up over christmas. Domestic shipping is usually no problem (maybe a day late) but when I order something from the UK it takes at least twice the time  when it gets shipped mid-late december compared to early december or january.
