goddamnit. as if i wasn't already broke enough with all the goddamned lego coming out this summer...

+1.

I need to sell more stuff, but this is a fantastic deal for all that's included.

Just out of curiousity, I noticed some of the pics showed a dedicated number pad unit.  Is that going to be offered as well, or just the two different keyboards?

There's another group buy by Elton for that Butterfly Pad a long time ago. I wish Duck could do another round though.

Those pictures of the number pad plus keyboard, all in satin black...  lustworthy.

Really interested in the Viper, but I've spent a lot recently, so it depends on if I can find the funds.
Maybe I can sell my Kidneys for some extra cash.

Dear elton5354,

Please excuse an old man's eyesight here but are you actually organizing a Group Buy for a "Viper" - HHKB 60% size keyboard and a separate "Eagle" - Keypad only ?

Just would like to know that it's only for a single keyboard coupled with a keypad.  Don't want to place an order for the wrong thing here.......

Please see if you could get an option for full assembly. Do you know if the Viper supports full backlighting, and how much is shipping to the US and EU?

Viper and Eagle are two different 60% keyboards, no numpad.

Okay, thank you epzy.  Hence this Group Buy is for either a Poker-style keyboard or a HHKB-style of keyboard - ONLY?

Please forgive my slow reasoning here, near the end of a 14 hour shift.

Has anyone thought of buying the Viper in a HHKB layout and gutting a traditional HHKB keyboard then replacing it within the Viper case?

Can it be done hence getting perhaps the MOST supreme version of a HHKB that will ever be made?

I honestly doubt that because the two keyboards have entirely different designs and I think the hhkb plate is like moulded into the case but I have no idea honestly

If I get one of these boyyos, it'd be in silver and traditional ansi layout, not dat 1.75 shift and split backspace

How awful to not have the possibility of perfecting the HHKB  ::) .  Imagine having it residing in an aluminum casing, then that would be something to see and use if it was yours.

Not saying the HHKB is perfect but with all the HHKB fanatics residing here on Geekhack, I thought someone would design a new casing for that old keyboard by now.

The problem is that the slider guides are built into the top plastic cover. Realforces have metal plates that are seperate from the plastic case that do the same thing, so it is easy to make replacement aluminium cases. The same can't be said for HHKB. You would need to replicate all of the slider guides. Much higher machining costs, and much more room for error.

okay, I'll bite. In for a Viper, I'm guessing there will be more anodizing/ powder coating options? (hopefully something that looks good with Penumbra :D)

Probably only if you do it yourself. Most of the Duck buys have offered only silver, a blueish grey, and black. The lightsaver V2 had a red option.

when, i ask, will we see beige anodizing? has science gone too far?

^ This^   I would love to see beige anodizing.

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a standard silver aluminum case, spray on some etching primer then spray the colour beige all over it yourself?  I've never seen anodized 'Beige" but have seen muted champagne (which looks like the colour of piss).

Powder coat is more likely to look good for beige aluminum cases. I'd love to stick a Viper PCB in an giant beige powder coated unsaver case.

How feasible would powder coating be?

How thick is the layer of powder coat? I heard it can be about a mil thick. I would think that could have and adverse effect on how well the pcb and keys fit in the case.

Well, if the price is like FMJ's hard anodized case then you're looking around $260 just for the case itself..

Well, FMJ's case had different versions. You can pick different options. It affected the price allot.

Simple cuts, complex cuts.
Soft anodized, hard anodized.
Brass weights, no weights.

I feel like I can't even touch the aluminum when I get a soft anodized case.

Right. FMJ base version with weight hard anodized costs $250. Plus PCB and plate, a kit will cost about $325+. I just got my hands on the soft anodized Duck Orion kit and *personally*, it's as good as hard anodized FMJ (I have both). And I really like the price of Viper/Eagle. It's like free PCB and plate bundled with a 60% case, and even cheaper.

Maybe it's worth mention that FMJ also use 7075 aluminum, which is part of the reason why it's expensive.

"The 6061 alloy of aluminum is primarily composed of magnesium and silicon. This gives 6061 aluminum alloy superior welding ability over other alloys of aluminum, which are traditionally difficult to weld because of their chemical makeup and lack of conductivity. Some other elements of 6061 aluminum alloy include small amounts of iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, chromium, zinc and titanium."

"The 7075 aluminum alloy, while not being entirely different from 6061 aluminum alloy, is both more expensive and more prone to corrosion than 6061 aluminum alloy. The 7075 alloy is primarily composed of zinc as the alloying agent of the aluminum, as well as higher levels of magnesium and copper than are found in 6061 aluminum. This makes this composition of aluminum alloy as hard as many steels while still retaining the lightweight qualities of aluminum."

I think only the 7 series can be hard anodized.

If the aluminum being used for this is in the 7xxx series, then it can be hard anodized. 6xxx or less can't be anodized as hard

Sadly, this is not the case.

from wikipedia (still learning this blank board, so copypasta is faster)
6000 series are alloyed with magnesium and silicon, are easy to machine, and can be precipitation hardened, but not to the high strengths that 2000 and 7000 can reach.
7000 series are alloyed with zinc, and can be precipitation hardened to the highest strengths of any aluminium alloy.

7000 is just harder and more brittle IF it's hardened.

6061 and 7075 are common.

6061 density of 2.7 g/cm^3, yields at 240 MPa minimum (for T6 )
7075 density of 2.81 g/cm^3, yields at 430 MPa minimum (for T6 ) and is significantly more expensive to machine. un-heat treated 7075 is only 275 MPa max though.

I know nothing other than that 7xxx is better than 6xxx.

So if I understand this correctly, the main difference between soft anodized 6061 and hard anodized 7075 is just the hardness?

goddamnit. as if i wasn't already broke enough with all the goddamned lego coming out this summer...

Butterfly matches the case for the eagle/viper?
