[IC] KAT Lich - Updated with Vendors | GB Live!
« on: Thu, 31 October 2019, 16:18:47 »

GB thread is now live!

Hey there!
As this is my first set, I should introduce myself. I'm eskimojo, and have been in the community for a year or so.
This set is inspired by the character Wiz from Konosuba. In the anime, she is a well-meaning shopkeeper who happens to be undead.

Profile
I have chosen to design this set for KAT, as its silky smooth PBT surface combined with a comfortable and subtle sculpt makes it my favourite profile by far.
Additionally, they have the capability to do reverse dye sub, as seen in samples for KAT Eternal and KAT Oasis.
The MOQ system for KAT is also unique, and is done in such a way that allows for child kits that may not usually get enough support to be made. I've taken advantage of this by offering multiple international kits and colevrak support.

Colours
This set uses four Pantones as these are preferred for dye sublimation. However, I have backup RALs if those are required.
I have samples of these pantones in-hand, and am happy with them.

Google Form to register interest

Currently I have been updating my progress in Emir's Discord server, as he kindly let me have a channel there. However, I may create other methods of communication (and this thread will be kept updated, of course).

Kits

Base alphas for ANSI, ISO US and UK.

Modifiers for boards sized 60% to TKL. Includes ISO, tsangan, HHKB, and most others.
This also includes an R3 up arrow, as this was a feature from MT3 I particularly enjoyed and wanted for KAT.

Coverage for those inclined for smaller boards.

For those who like their board a little more gridlike.

Covers ergo boards and Boardwalk. (there are questions regarding 2u sculpt in the interest check form)

Covers ergo boards and Boardwalk. (there are questions regarding 2u sculpt in the interest check form)

Support for those who like their boards big and beautiful.

Add some magic to your board with these icons. Accent arrows also included.

For those who like their spacebars accented (or smaller). Includes extra B, for Alice users.

Adds coverage for northern international languages. Essentially a NorDe+ kit.

Adds coverage for those further south, covering both Spanish and Portuguese layouts along with Italian.

Coverage for AZERTY users (including France, Belgium and Northwest Africa).

Coverage for Dvorak and Colemak derived layouts.

Special Thanks
  • Minterly/Nat and the neccsock crew - General advice (especially with kitting) along with the incredible support from the whole crew (love you guys). Special mention goes to bhk, who was a lifesaver for getting hold of Pantones. (Grinsepo also suggested lowercase legends, which turned out great)

  • DepletedVespene/Miguel - Tireless feedback, and his awesome resources for international kits.
  • OneCreativeMind - Feedback on the vector art in the set. Also created the arrow icons, which fit perfectly with the font.
  • MKUltra - Assistance and feedback on the Ergo kit.
  • MetallicCharles - Awesome renders for Iron165, M0llY, and SP-111.
  • Yuliia of mykeyboard.eu - Support and enthusiasm!

Long live the superior MOQ system. I see coleverak, I'm in for at least that + the base kit, but most likely more. I'm not even a weeb, know what Konosuba is, or even know how to pronounce it, but the colorways look fresh af  :thumb:

Personally not the biggest fan of the colors but the theme is dope. Also, your decision to go with lowercase legends is really cool. Not for me, but best of luck with the set!

Sure! My phone's colour accuracy isn't too great I think, but here's a couple pictures I had taken previously.

I'll work on finding a way to take better photos by the time samples from Keyreative are a factor  ;)

(I actually brought these to the recent MKUK Leeds meetup, though I'm not sure how many noticed)

Nice colorway, but the mod letters are too small compare to the alphas. The font can be more magical, something like these:

Thank you!

I sorta like these types of photos better as they’re regular lighting. Wanted to see how purple 4126c was in lower light and it’s still purple (vs GMK phantom or 4119c which get to be nearly black quite readily)

Legend size is definitely something I can tweak  :)
I did try a few more magical fonts, but decided that a simpler font looked better for keycaps. The current font, Signika, hits a good balance with some flair while still keeping it clean (in my opinion).

Any chance of uppercase legends? What was the thought behind lowercase?

Unlikely, I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with lowercase.  :)

The decision to go with lowercase legends mainly came out a desire to try something new and to avoid the standard SA ALL CAPS style of legends. That said, I also believe it suits the character as Wiz is fairly soft-spoken.

You did a great job color matching the artwork.  I don't know anything about Wiz, but from the images I've seen, your color choices look spot on.  Also, from what I see in the images, Wiz has some monumental mammary glands

I don't think the anime goes into detail on her undead status (let alone the status of any particular biological function), but maybe the light novels do.

Japanese animation can make anything cute, even zombies, so 'immortal', and 'cold body temperature' are basically the extent of her symptoms.

I was just checking the interwebs to see if I missed anything and learned she is/was 20 years old...

I must admit I saw this complaint coming, but find it rather odd. 40s seems to share more keys with ortho than ortho does with ergo and 40s does with regular mods. Can you explain your reasoning?

Yeah, Manzel's done a great job here <3

You may be waiting a long while for GMK Lich, considering my dislike of GMK keycaps  :-[

That said, I'd be interested in a possible PBT cherry profile run if KAT is successful (and once I know a bit more about the available PBT cherry manus).

The problem is that more than half of the keys in 40s are of no use to ortho users and the kit is missing thumb keys for split orthos with thumb clusters. Merging ortho with Ergo kit solves that. It also provides a great option for larger ortho boards such as boardwalk.

The other way around, many of the 1u keys are worthless to 40s users. 40s kits have much more common with regular mods than with ortho mods.

The only reason these kits ever got thrown together was due to the huge MOQ of GMK and traditionalists wanting to support numpad and ISO in base and not 40s. Outside of GMK it makes little sense to merge these kits. I'd say even within GMK it makes more sense to put 40s in base. But that's another discussion entirely and we won't know what to do with ortho.

The teenager in me sees Lich and can think 1 thing and only 1 thing. The Lich King and Warcraft 3 beta keys.... although that would probably be a black and blue theme.

I’m not familiar with this Undead pretty little lady but there is an ergo kit and where ergo goes Er I go. I’m in. Great job, I dig the colors and the presentation. I will stay tuned in.

New renders are in, thanks to MetallicCharles!

I've added them to the OP, but here's a few of my favourites.

I'm also considering tweaking the legend size and weight, and will be playing around with those (will likely make alphas a little smaller, and overall legends a little less bold). I'll report back if I decide to change anything.

Vendors are still in the works - I plan to start a discussion with zFrontier within the next week.

Providing that works out, I may also have something else to talk about  ;) Will have to see.

I noticed the kit picture is missing "J" on KAT-R3.  This key is needed to support Colemak.

Very excited for this set, I especially love the gold keys and font that add a little spice to this set. Magic circle brass cap would be a life saver aswell since I missed the DSA Magical Girl's one ( Maybe you can hit up Salvun for those =] )
Lowercase legends are also a nice touch. Would be interested to see how this looks on a rose gold board.
