Short Term Lurker, Newly Addicted
« on: Fri, 18 January 2013, 15:36:04 »
Hellooooooo GeekHack! My name is Adam and I live in the UK.

I moved back from Mac to PC (just fancied building my own again for fun) so I dusted off my old Saitek Eclipse keyboard but I just didn't like it (those gaming style keyboards just don't do it for me any more). Whilst looking for a new one that looked more grown-up and had good quality, I came across these 'mechanical keyboards' and started looking into them. Well, the geek in me was smitten immediately - there's so much to choose from; different switches, different layouts, backlights, keycaps etc. I told myself I'd just buy a cheaper one to see what the fuss was about so I started out with a QPAD MK-50 with Red switches and I'm already in love.

Now, every day when I go to work I can't stand to type on my standard Dell keyboard (and luckily I've got a bit of freedom since I'm a Software Engineer) so of course I've had to buy another to take with me. I never noticed before that the keys on that keyboard have gone shiny, but now it feels like the most important thing in the world to get it replaced. This time I've somehow managed to convince myself to order a Filco Majestouch 2 with Brown switches and I've ordered some 40A O-rings as well just in case people complain.

Next, I know that I'll prefer one type of switch over the other and have to sell one keyboard to get a matching one for home/work :) Then I'll want to try a Blue/Topre/Matias/Model M and replace all the keycaps obviously.

I've already put my kidney on eBay - who needs 2 kidneys when you've got a collection of keyboards, right?

Welcome! Remember, its not just a hobby or an addiction, its a way of life! Good Luck.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

I discovered cherry MX boards mid last year and was faced with the same dilemma! Now I have QFRs with blue, brown, black and green switches. I've really learned to appreciate them all! =)

Welcome to GeekHack! And a kidney on eBay? I guess I wouldn't mind having three, what's the listing price :3

Welcome to Geekhack!

I see you have transcended the empty wallet already ;)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Welcome, Adam!

Sounds like you've already learned the first lesson in addiction; there's no such thing as a cash-flow problem when you've still got body parts to sell!   ;D
