So to start off, 2016 (aka this year) turned out is the year were I start to listen to vinyl.

And when I saw this thread on Friday I decided to go out on Saturday and get some "new" vinyl.

And so I did. I will also share all the other ones I have with you.

Sadly I don't own any coloured vinyl, but I will try and get a reservation for the new Kvelertak album!

So to start off I'll show you the older ones I have.

Jimi Hendrix Experience Smash Hits (slightly scratched sadly, but no warping at all.)
Show Image

I also managed to get a russian print of Led zeppelin, which I found really cool

the last of the old vinyls I own is this History of Rock one, which also the first vinyl I bought.
Show Image

Moving on to what my "collection" mostly consists off which are newer vinyl.

To start we have Sleep's album Dopesmoker, this is the Deluxe reissue which also has a live version of Holy Mountain.

The artwork is beautiful.

Steven Wilson: Hand. Cannot. Erase.

Steven Wilson: The Raven That Refused To Sing

Lamb of God: Hourglass 6 LP collection

Led Zeppelin II

Led Zeppelin III (This one is really cool as the reproduced the original cover which has a spinning disc that you can see through the holes)

Gojira: L'enfant Sauvage

And here is an Imgur link with some extra pictures. https://imgur.com/a/4lP03

Great pick ups!

Steven Wilsons most recently releases have been very good indeed, I need to pick some of them up. The Watchmaker on The Raven is incredible. Same can't be said for the latest Gojira record, I am a massive fan of them and I've seen them live a fair few times, but L'enfant really didn't do anything for me, the songs sounded good live but on the album they just don't smack me round the face like TWoaF. I've got my Woods of Ypres collection finished, just wondering if I go for the full Emperor/ Ihsahn or Gojira back catalogue.

Hey guys, need advice
in what condition does a vinyl require some cleaning?
Is this a good product?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DISCWASHER-RD1006-Wet-System-Vinyl-Record-Care-System-/201376966482?hash=item2ee300a752:g:ORwAAOSwEK9T~Lip

Or is there any other alternative way to clean it?

Some records need cleaning when they are brand new. I have a few records from Earache and they are noisy straight out of the shrink wrap. Earache use these horrible paper inserts and it slowly leaches out tiny particles that sit in the grooves. Its always good practice to clean your record before you play and after you've finished listening to it. I use this:- http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0006VMBHI/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00A4X7DIA&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0F334TRGCP90XS5SWNVF. Always keep your dust cover down when the record is playing too.

So they don't need any liquid solutions for cleaning? just brush?
Thanks for the info btw :)

FWIW, I've always been told to keep the cover *up* while playing to reduce static.

If you want to go further than just brushing here's two methods I've seen.

1) Vacuum machine:

These are amazing but oh man are they expensive.

http://www.soundstagedirect.com/vpi-16.5-record-cleaning-machine.shtml?gclid=Cj0KEQjwlLm3BRDjnML3h9ic_vkBEiQABa5oeeO8cPxHtpM0Nqs8vFZEoRZ0cab5sB-r8wUl11EnqhAaAiq68P8HAQ

$699.99

I did find http://www.squeakycleanvinyl.com/ these guys which have a similar solution but at a much better price point. It's basically a 3d printed bare bones version of VPI machine.

I ordered one but it hasn't arrived yet but I'll definitely put up some impressions when I get it.

The creator made a video and it looks to work pretty well

2) Wood Glue

You basically spread a thin layer of wood glue over the record and then after letting it dry you pull it off. Some people swear by this method but holy crap I'm absolutely terrified of trying it.

Oh and on the topic of static does anyone know if these static guns are worth buying?

He has a bunch of different colored plastic available too! I'm really excited to get mine in, hopefully it'll live up to the hype :))

And I absolutely love the idea of the static gun. "Shoot" the vinyl until all the static is gone haha awesome. I'll have to look into picking one up for my next vinyl related purchase :thumb:

I find that if you let the brushes "trail" (like when using a paintbrush) it's not as effective as when you "lead" with the brushes (hold it at a steep angle and let the brushes dig into the grooves).  It's harder to do because you risk knocking the plastic bit into the record, but the results are much better.

going "against the grain" like hoff suggested works best, but, it usually leaves a "strip" of dust that is hard to completely remove. i think the easiest thing to do is to blow away the "strip" with some compressed air or something similar. you can also use the brush in a "sweeping" + "scooping" motion. the sweep-scoop works, but you have to make multiple passes to completely remove the strip of dustcrap.

you cOoOoUuLd also try putting the record on turntable, setting it to 33rpm and if you have a pitch control, drop it all the way down so it rotates as slow as possible. start the platter, place brush across record @ 9 o' clock, and slowly pull the brush straight towards you as the record rotates. this way works as well, but it takes too long for my liking. kind of hard to explain as well lol...

I am sorry for responding so late. I agree that TWoaF is a great album, and I also really like From Mars to Sirius.
The reason I got L'enfant was that they had it in stock where I bought it.
I picked up some more vinyl on my trip to Scotland a week ago, I'll post them when I get home.
On Steven Wilson I need to listen more to his 2 first albums,
if I like them just as much as the ones I own I will pick them up when I can.

Got the 3d printed vacuum cleaning machine last week and finally got the time to try it out. I used an old dusty record that had a scratch already to test it, and it works amazingly well

Solution is 3 parts distilled water, 1 part 99% alcohol, and a couple drops of dish soap.  Applied the solution and rubbed it in with the brush, let it sit for a minute then vacuumed. Repeated with just distilled water to rinse it out. The before and after comparison speaks for itself

Record is: A13 by Garnier

Here are some of my most recent pick ups:-

Darkthrone- A Blaze in the Northern Sky

Gojira- The Way of All Flesh (clear and blue splatter). Another great record, sounds really good considering its a splatter

Temperance Movement- Self Titled

Protomartyr- The Agent Intellect (green trans). I can't like this record, no matter how much I listen to it

Coheed and Cambria- The Colour Before the Sun

Deafheaven- New Bermuda. Sounds great, recorded on analogue gear and plays at 45, winning

Mastodon- Alseep in the Deep Picture Disk

I picked it up in London from Rough Trade when I went down to see my friend for the weekend. I hadn't listened to it before hand, but it came highly rated from various places, its just not my cup of tea. I have bought a few records in the past without listening to them, I suppose its a gamble.

I know I sometimes do the same. I bought a record as a joke in Edinburgh for 2£ it gave me plenty of laughs ( I haven't listened to it even... I'll post pics at some point so you get why)

I gave it a listen and didn't like it at all. the vocals were bad and there was nothing drawing me in at all.

Totally forgot today was rsd

I wanted a couple soundtracks (John Wick and Blacklist) but I feel like I'll be able to pick those up later without a huge markup so I'm not too sad.

Did you get anything good?

Nope, I worked today.  Don't have much for record stores here anyway.  The only two I need to pick up are the remastered Ride the Lightning, and Dark Side of the Moon.  Need DSotM for syncing with The Force Awakens.

I dug up some dirty gems at a local Record Store Day block "party/sale/market". All for about 22 bucks!

Is there a specific reason why a lot of vinyl is coming out in May?

I have like 3-4 preorders all coming out in May. And a ton of stuff I've seen also has may RD. Is there something special about vinyl and the month of may?

Byker that looks dope af. I remember seeing it a couple months ago. I have no idea what type of music that is tho.

You should check out Flume, he is super solid. He does the electronic/background music and collabs with a lot of artists, including quite a bit of rap. Check this out if you are interested: https://youtu.be/tHBWfzIg5YY?t=50m1s I couldn't resist preordering the limited edition, even though I don't even own a player yet...

RIP your wallet. Vinyl is so much easier to spend your money on than keyboards :(
