Making my own keyboard?
« on: Sat, 21 February 2015, 23:13:12 »
So I was in the market for a new keyboard when I was guided to the Gateron Group Buy by Snipars.
And it got me thinking, it would be really cool to build my own keyboard.

My knowledge is pretty limited, which is why I'm posting here.

So, first of all, what would I need to make a keyboard, and where would I get it?

This is what (I think) I need.
-Case
-Switches
-PCB
-Keycaps
-Some way to solder switched to PCB

I want to build a TenKeyLess (TKL) keyboard with some decent keycaps, gateron black switches, and a blue backlight?

Any help you could offer would be appreciated :)

Also, what budget would I be looking at?

EDIT 1: Corrected "Switched" to "Switches"

Boy, have you got some reading to do.  My advice is to lurk around Geekhack for about a month, paying special attention to the Making Stuff subforum.

If you want to get started, you can probably best succeed by buying a kit.  Kits usually include PCB, switch plate, and case.  To that you need to add switches, stabilizers, and keycaps.  This is just the minimum.  Full custom builders often buy all sorts of things like LEDs, absorption mats, stickers, switch covers, springs, lube, cables, etc.  You will need tools, including a soldering station.

Welcome, and prepare your wallet.  Most of my customs were north of $300, all in.

As mentioned, I was looking at buying some Gateron switches from the groupbuy. On the IRC I was directed to the Phantom PCBs, would it be better to buy a kit? If so, where could I buy them?
