[eye see] CNC Milled 5mm Thick Polycarbonate Plates (for 60%)
« on: Thu, 14 April 2016, 10:39:16 »
I've recently have someone to mill this plate for my Duck Mini build. Some pictures of the plate below:

And this is what it looks like after it's assembled:

Currently my PC supplier has only clear ones, will ask if there's any other color.

Typing test here:

Note that the typing test is done on a Duck Mini V1 case, 55g gateron blacks. The end result with your setup might be different.

That was honey lemon btw. it's nice

Specifications (??) of this plate?

  • 5mm in thickness
  • Will have universal screw holes to fit your other cases and not only Korean customs!
  • Fully CNC Milled plate

I would buy one.

Do you think you could post a typing video of the board?

Also interested in split backspace.

I'd buy it just like that. Or with a split backspace.

I'd probably get one with the same layout you have (Except with a 2.75 right shift).

Would love to see a more frosted clear option.

I've actually got this plate in clear. I've decided to sand them for a bit for a slightly frosted look.

will consider sandblasting the plates for a more frosted look

what about eagle with this plate? eagle is fine i guess heh

thank you :) it's 5mm thick btw. just to clarify that this plate won't completely touch the PCB. there's like a hairline thick gap between the pcb and the plate.

there will be either universal or multiple layouts for this plate during the GB. maybe i'll stick to universal.

good question. I'll need to get back to you once I've contacted the factory that does this

Universal would be a no-go for me, I really dislike the large cutouts in an universal plate. (People have implied that I'm overly sensitive about universal cutouts though, so I wouldn't say this is the general opinion in any way =P).

for mass marketing i see where universal plates are useful but i'm on your side

I have my own CNC and am about to cut out acrylic plates for my ergodox build (3piece case)

Agreed, although I'm an ansi boy so I'd be on the opposing side if only one layout is chosen. But especially with a pretty clear backplate like this, I feel cutouts would look bad.

maybe around 60 to 65 shipped (tracking included) with packaging to prevent damage during shipping

is the price fair enough?

zennasyndroxx, any chance you are willing to share the CAD file for the Duck Viper plate?
I have lots of acrylic and full time access to a laser cutter.
Would like to make my own plates and would be very much appreciated!

EDIT: I did CAD my own MX Duck Viper plate based on Duck's ALPS plate DXF but would be nice to have something to compare it to.

Would prefer splitting layouts on at least 2 plates. Prefer simple cuts to an overly universal plate...

Hhkb layout would be sweet as well.
Color me interested! :D

Ey, don't forget about ISO, please =(

I don't care about the rest of the layout (even though I do prefer split right shift and 1.25 modifiers, I can live with full right shift and WKL bottom row if need be).

Definitely interested in 2 plates, specifically a clear/frosted one and if available, white. The tolerances of the milling looks similar to GON's universal 60% aluminum plate which is exciting to see.

I really dig the cloudy look with the black pcb, definitely interested. But like a few others have mentioned, I would highly prefer a non-universal layout.

i never thought parts for my endgame build would start so early... wkl layout with a split shift (plate as it is in op) WITHOUT a universal layout (as mentioned throughout the thread) would be perfect.

in the interest of full disclosure, i would prefer a standard bottom row, but realize that this would create far too many complicated options. so yeah, a non-universal wkl layout is fine

Hi, sir. How about your plans about GB? I've participated in currently running 60% Feetless acrylic case. It would perfectly match with your plate, imho.

Once I figure out my fave switches, this would probably be the best plate for it!

Any chance this can support ALPS in terms of layout and thickness?

If there's enough demand for that then maybe yes.

Is there any readily available alps 60% to choose from?

Need to at least get a prototype done and try them out

However depending on the PCB I might be interested.

Depends of what software the PCB would run and what kind of lighting it'd support.

If you could do a group buy with this (hopefully universal layout to include HHKB layout etc), stabilisers and a PCB that allowed for RGB (4 pin) backlighting then I'd be sold. No idea if such a PCB exists, but it's about time.

You can get ~80% silmilar effects with a half cost Acrylic Plates.
The Polycarb one tends to be too hard with thick metal cases, according to the people.
You can get more color options with Acrylic,  but the Polycarbs are still attractive to try.

Thin Polycarb plates are good for the soft typist on MX browns, blacks and Blues, they say.

I'm afraid that there wouldn't be any PCB bundles for these plates.

However, they will be compatible with bface and sprits so you can grab them from winkeyless etc. Should be compatible with others as well (gh60 and so on)

I'm going to mill other layouts and provide samples for people to try it out.

I've only tried the layout as per OP and I prefer to have people test other layouts before starting this gb

If you do give it a shot, and it's not too much trouble, I've seen it mentioned before that extra steps would need to be taken to make a 5mm plate compatible with screw in stabs due to the extra height at the mounting points compared to regular PCB mount. If you could add that in, it would be pretty awesome. =)

Or since it is CNC'd, you can actually cut out a groove for the switch to clip in, while having most part to be 5mm, but that would be expensive

Interested, any thought on the price?

Will the hole be tight enough to just block the switch even if is not clipped or we will have to glue it?

Generally 5mm isn't too thick, but requires special grooves milled out to make room for stabs, allow switches to clip in etc.

Since polycarb is stronger you don't need to worry about making thick plates as much.

Thick plates are pretty appealing tho tbh.

You just need notches so it will only be 1.5mm at the clip points. A good example is the 2mm gon plates:

Hey man I know this post is super old, but I was wondering if you still make/sell any of these plates. They look amazing on that board you posted pictures of. In fact, I was also somewhat curious what pcb was on that board. Thanks!

I've recently have someone to mill this plate for my Duck Mini build. Some pictures of the plate below:

Currently my PC supplier has only clear ones, will ask if there's any other color.

Typing test here:

Note that the typing test is done on a Duck Mini V1 case, 55g gateron blacks. The end result with your setup might be different.

That was honey lemon btw. it's nice

Specifications (??) of this plate?

  • 5mm in thickness
  • Will have universal screw holes to fit your other cases and not only Korean customs!
  • Fully CNC Milled plate

Hey man I know this post is super old, but I was wondering if you still make/sell any of these plates. They look amazing on that board you posted pictures of. In fact, I was also somewhat curious what pcb was on that board. Thanks!

I've recently have someone to mill this plate for my Duck Mini build. Some pictures of the plate below:

And this is what it looks like after it's assembled:

Would be interested too. I wouldn't mind getting back into tray mount cases as I think there are some really good ones rn.

TYL made some 4mm ones
https://ilumkb.com/collections/pcb-and-plate/products/in-stock-tyl-4mm-plate?variant=31926847832146

Xondat has some leftovers on his site still.  I have 2 and bought 2 more.  They are amazing for hotswap boards.

Thanks, I just snagged one of those TYL ones. Noxary shipping was a bit much, and I like the fixed layout of the TYL one better.

Any idea how recently those TYL plates were in stock? Any chance they'll ever come back or should I just look elsewhere?
