OMG, episode one..

she's just shooting into the well with a gun willy nilly.

That well looks like more than 50 feet down and no wider than 2 feet across

If she's off even by 2 degrees, she could easily hit 1.5+ feet off center and crack the wall of the well..

50feet * tan( 2 degrees ) = 1.72 feet..   /angry face

-she doesn't aim down sight
-clearly it looks like she's shooting at more than 2 degrees..

Man, this is just bad science..

Who's their science officer on this show, I hope it's not the michelle yeoh character, because then I've lost faith in humanity.

God damn bad well plot,  they didn't even think about the geometry

So far,  I am deeply disappointed.. !!

To be honest, I hadn't planned on watching... BUT

If you do live reviews like this of every episode, I'm in.

I'm obligated to watch startrek,  even if it's bad..

So far in the 2 episodes.. I'd call it a waste of great space-ship cgi..

8.5 million per episode. jesus christ.

sigh.......

The upside is,  it can only get better from here..  hahahahahaha

GDI..

Ok..  any space faring technology is generally machined down to 0.01mm precision (in real life, not just trek lore)

Look at this --Supposed-- PHOTON Torpedo WARHEAD !!

179044-0

Does that Look like 0.01mm to you ?

Clearly the two halves are off by ~0.5mm..   that's 50x the error permitted for space tech..

And seriously, a photon torpedo warhead,  you'd think they'd probably go down to 0.001 on something that important..

//This really grinds my gearz..  !!!!!!!!

Where did that $8.5 million go..

They clearly didn't spend it on basic machining precision..

0.01mm isn't even that high of a tolerance to hold for small parts like that..

This is just bad craftsmanship..

And those metal couplers arn't even centered..

--Even if we're to assume they're not power/ ignition conduits--

--  as in they're just hookups for shock absorption,    They wouldn't be placed off centered, because that would produce uneven stress on the frame..

So you're thinking, well Tp,  what if those move,  well, no, they wouldn't put moving parts so close on the warhead like that,   they would have the hook up there,  but any moving parts would be on the apparatus its connected to..

Keeping the warhead itself away from shock and movement is the point..  IF those are stabilizer hookups..

I guess it's kinda good that klingons don't wear dirty rags and have seemingly bad hygiene anymore..

It doesn't seem probable that any species can evolve technologically without conquering basic microbial avoidance..

To produce any advanced tech typically involve clean rooms.  And even if clean rooms arn't needed after the technology is produced and shelled,   cleanliness is still significantly useful to reduce operational upkeep..

Although, it still seems like they've got bad dentistry.. hahahahaha.. but at least they dress better.

The original klingons were bum garbed space warriors, which was a bit ridiculous

They should've just used picard..

That would have been cool as hell but this series is positioned after Enterprise and BEFORE The Next Generation....

/Solution

Picard was sent back in time,

this is trek,  it's fine.. it'll all work out.

Picard then happens upon an alien fountain of youth,  like master Roshi from dragon ball..

And he lives forever,  and is  the captain of Every enterprise ship FOREVER.

This is what I want..  and I'm just going to be a star trek fan,  and assume every other star trek fan wants the same thing.. because that's what star trek fans do..

Sorry, I don't buy the new Klingons. I just don't. You're not going to find me saying, "Okay, yeah, that's a Klingon." Sorry, it's not going to happen.

Besides, it's regression. The standard Klingons could act like hell. These guys, with the rigid molded faces, they're stuck behind stupid masks and must rely purely on body language. It's a big step backwards for any kind of artistry. But maybe no one cares about acting anymore and just wants to see people being killed and stuff blowing up.

Dunno... There aren't any songs with ideas longer than four bars anymore, so maybe it's an attention-span thing. Sometimes it seems like we're gradually turning back into babies. Babies, that is, who like watching people get killed and stuff blowing up.

I'm just going by what I saw in the first part of the first episode, all I've had time to see so far. The Klingon get-ups look like they're about 1/4" thick, effectively immobilizing the actors's features. Sheesh.

Younger people have more trouble than older people because language is one of those things that you inadvertently get better at just by existing...

Given the lax in education perpetrated by our government to produce and maintain lower socioeconomic classes to supply foot soldiers and heavy labor , Many young people today have trouble writing you 500 words..

That shuttle pod is spacious..

But the layout's kind of unscientific..

Because there's really no reason to have so much space in the very middle like that..

If it were ever used for cargo,  and the craft rolls,  that cargo could crush the people sitting on the side..

The old shuttles made more sense even though they were cramped..

Sssssssssss.....

Star trek always moved fast, 1 topic, 1 episode

it's able to do that at 1 to 2 million $  per episode.

At 8 million, game of throne prices.. sigh........  this will reduce trek to a snail's pace.

This show has greatly elevated tech Fabrication rates, if they have such a disposable attitude towards starships.

There was literally nothing of novelty in episode 3..  it's good some good space ship shots.. but sigh..........

what is going on,  is this the end of trek as we know it.....

I suppose some would argue, trek stopped advancing after TNG,  but even then, Voyager carried the flame of TNG more so than Enterprise and certainly more than Discovery thus far..

The new series currently  is just tired writing.

This was a secret wartime military operation on the edge of Klingon space, not a training mission.
Standard operating procedure is blow it up, leave nothing for the enemy and cut your losses before you lose more. You would only want to salvage if it's safely in your territory or you have no choice due to a lack of resources.

They didn't even take any of the good stuff..  like maybe the dilithium, warp plasma , or any warp reactor injectors, other components.. or photon warheads.. stuff like that..

Space is really really big..

sending 1 shuttle vs 100 is nothing..

It's sloppy that they'd make a show like this after all the REAL space advancements we've made...

I think overall in terms of the show's design,  the priority for NON-trek fanbase has taken over priority for existing fan base..

Certainly We'll have to watch at least 2 more episodes,  but it seems that way so far.. given how little happened..   and this ridiculously slow pacing,  monster down a dark hallway nonsense.

The camera work is also sloppy, most shots they are way too close for the 16:9 frame size. it looks totally unrealistic.

Not using more good looking females is going to come back and bite them..  The audience will only stick around to watch beautiful people do mundane things..  no one wants to watch a Tp4-class human do homework..  that's boring.

Jesus ****ing christ, i say "malayasian woman" and now im a racist? are you ****ing kidding me?

Here's an easy test: If you're thinking of saying something negative based on someone's color or ethnicity, your comment could be considered racist. If that wasn't your intention, feel free to clarify.

Quote from: Google
racism (noun): prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

what if i said "american woman" is that racist too?

Well, let's take a look at what you said:

Plus... old malayasain woman vs klingon warrior... give me a break

Actually, that'd be ageism, sexism and racism. And if you said "American woman", you'd be implying that, for some reason, the woman was also less likely to be good enough to win the battle because she was American... Does that make much more sense?

BTW, for what it's worth, people a lot older than Michelle Yeoh can be formidable opponents. Check out this video of Aikedo creator Morihei Ueshiba effortlessly neutralizing trained attackers (alone, and in groups) when he was well into his 80s.

I don't know how relevant this is, but as long as we're being geeky:

Captain Kirk, the original Trek captain, was often portrayed as a mediocre fighter. He never demonstrated any particular martial arts training, either in the original TV series or the films that followed. And yet you'd think a starship captain—not to mention one who habitually lead exploration parties where there was a good chance of encountering hostile life forms—would have at least some self-defense training. Being a good-sized white American male, with a strong native command of the English language, didn't seem to help much.  :?)

There was no racist intent in my statements man, I was trying to say that i didn't think Michelle Yeoh was a good fit because I had a difficult time understanding her accent. That's my opinion. Your interpretation and lengthy explanation was not needed. If you want to continue picking apart my statements and defining obvious words thats just fine, it makes you looks like a pretentious ****. And gathering what I have from your obviously malicious attitude im assuming you have a little too much free time on your hands. You interpreted my slightly smart ass comment as an attack on star trek/your ego and got offended, next time maybe gather judgement from more then 2 sentences out of someones mouth. I am not racist, I have many many different races in my family and take great offence if someone calls me racist. Its way out of line and throwing around accusations behind the anonymity of the internet is a coward move.

I will not continue this moronic conversation with you any more.

Both of you are intolerant..

redbanshee, your remark is careless and demonstrate little racial Tolerance/sensitivity towards people of different cultures with varying degree of mastery of your language.

ander,  you are intolerant of people who have yet to learn to be tolerant.  Everyone learns at a different pace, and not everyone, even those who co-exist in the same time-period would've been educated to complete equivalence..

As fans of Trek,   I suggest both of you to reflect upon your own conducts before attempting to judge others.

Ask yourselves, have either of you demonstrated the decorum of a Federation Citizen ??

Tp4 merely expressed his perceptions of the type of content that would allow Star Trek to prevail among its Core audience.

The desire towards better-looking females is neither intolerant, nor discriminating, in the context of describing an engineered Visual experience, such as a televised novella.

The more casual choice of words was to impart an air of levity.

In Conclusion, Tp4's assertions are both logical and succinctly appropriate.

Sigh............

Again, Great CGI space battle..

Very lax on story and plot..

Hrrrrmm...  they're dragging out a movie style script over too long a span..

This type of pace is very unlike TV Trek.

I think you already set your mind to disliking the show because you disliked the women and there is almost nothing they co do to recover at this point, short of having 7 of 9 or Carol Markus come in and strip down to undies again.

Cause' you know, that really pushed the plot forward.

Just watched the 4 episodes. I'd pretty low expectations because Enterprise and Voyager started pretty shakily too.

Pretty happy with most of it really. I HATED the movies didn't feel like Trek at all. This has enough of the Trek TV qualities to feel like the real thing, with an approach that isn't just repeating what's come before. Loads of females who aren't there just for tight fitting bodysuit eyecandy makes for a change that will probably improve the characterisation a bit let's be honest.

All in all decent retconning. The main thing I'm hoping for after the whizz bang of the opening few episodes they throw in lots of exploring and dealing with odd alien phenomenon instead of it being too combat focussed. That can come later anyway I'm guessing they'll probably run this for at least 3 series in the hopes of getting people to sign up to their digital subscription service.

Some elements are there yes, but it's missing the pace in terms of episodic resolution.

Trek had always been FAST, no dilly dally, no grinding on 1 tiny plot device.

Right now, It's starting to look like, we're gonna have this klingon war thing for the whole season.

Had this been TNG,   it would've been 2 episodes top..   They would've started the war, killed the bad guys, and signed the declaration half way into episode 2,  and then the next half is bikini episode of the counselor troi and lieutenant yar on risa..

That's what the fan wants..

And Trek has always been HIGHLY dependent upon its female cast for what's now known as FAN_Service,  why take that away..   That's half of why people watch it..

In many ways, we can say, there's a TREK formula,  and deviation = peril, because that's not why people watch TV.. /Futurama

Ah I think the fan service **** is hackneyed at this point. Was it in like the first episode of Enterprise where the female crew all go on a planet, purely to get radiatiated, and then have to strip down to their skimpies to get cleaned up. Prefer the noodle DNA approach we don't need male gaze softcore several times an episode at this point. HBO throw as much tits and sex at the screen in the first episodes of any show they launch, or have the whole show be about sex as with that new Maggie Gyllenhaal show, so it's not like there's not plenty of that available anyway.

They can have big multiseries arc wars and self contained episodes at the same time hopefully. This isn't the kind of show they're going to be syndicating to daytime television presumably so the format has to change. I just want whatever they do to be a success and then they can launch multiple series with different aspects like they did back in the 90's.

We all hope for the best..

But there's no reason NOT to have Fan_Service..

For the members of society which has already been thoroughly exposed to the entire gamut of Human Produced Sci-Fi,    it only comes down to Presentation..

Trek is a complete collection of ideas, that could be refined further in academia, but not in any story telling path.. because the general audience isn't there to read a technical manual..

The new trek's failing is biting onto very narrow sci-fi elements and spreading it way too thin.

We've already seen teleportation,   we don't need an entire season to be about the implications of those technologies..

As for character depth,   Humans and Humanoids are NOT VERY DEEP..  they're actually quite simple..   Not because all humans are simple,  but because you don't have the time to get deeper in 40 minutes,  or even 10x40 minutes..

As an aside they just announced a TV adaptation of George RR Martins sci fi novellas is going to be filmed in Limerick (20 mins from me) next spring. I'd better hit the gym see if I can't get in the right shape for one of those body suits.
