I've heard people saying the type-s is a lot better than the regular version, Is it really that much different than a silenced regular HHKB?

Are you talking about the dental band modded normal HHKB? If yes, I would assume that the mod would reduce the key travel of your HHKB which is different from the Type-S as its plungers have a thinner base than the normal, allowing for the presence of the foam pads hence no modification of the key travel.

The dental band mod does reduce travel on the HHKB.  Some have said it is negligible, others say its very bad.

Perhaps one could do the same as for the Type-S plunge and sand down the normal plunger but I guess it would be quite time consuming. I wonder if you can buy Type-S plungers at retails, my first guess would be no as there would be no point anymore in buying a Type-S.

I saw someone mention that before, but I think it would be much more work than it's worth.  I believe people have swapped the silent sliders out of the 87U though.  I think that would be much easier to do than trying to source them outright.  You could swap out all of the modifiers from a silent 87U and keep the alphas silent.  You would have enough sliders for an HHKB, and should be able to recoup most of your cost on the RF through selling it used.

Actually that's something I haven't thought of but I wonder there would be a buyer for such an hybrid board. I wonder as well how much the silent 87U prices at.

I've said it a handful of times. Don't pay for the type-s when you can get the same effect with the o2dazone mod for $20

If I ever end up in a situation that requires my HHKB to be silenced, this is the route I will take.  I just can't justify the cost of the Type-S, when his mod is so cheap and effective (from what I have read).

I'm planning on the ironed landing pad method, is o2dazone's method much different than the regular dental bands?

I have used such technique on my Novatouch. I did notice a little difference between the stock and the silenced keys though (I kept 2 stock keys as a matter of comparison). However the sound is definitely better and I still have a tactile feedback. It was time consuming though, especially since I did mistakes several times. I used Spicebar's method.

Meh, I feel like if I use the type S as much as my other HHKBs, the price difference is negligible in the long run. Also type S does not void EK's warranty ([/my price justification]  :p)

Fair enough, imho, it's just that the Type-S is fairly mushy compared to the non type-s. It's not that I don't enjoy my type-s, it's just that I would rather use the o2dazone and void ek's warranty to have the improved feeling over paying the extra cash haha. I'm very happy with the board, and that's my only gripe (well, that, and the fact that there's no alu case, but that's a problem that will be resolved in the near future).

Why buy a non-Type-S for 255 in the US when you can import a Type-S directly from PFU (at times when Tenso has a shipping promotion going on) from Japan for about 257 (without the shipping promotion, you'd pay maybe 275)?

What kind of battery life do you get with your HHKB?

I'm on the fence about ordering a blue tooth version because of the aluminium case that's coming up, I'm going to see if there is going to be room for the battery. I hope there is, because a blue tooth, aluminium HHKB with 55g domes, silenced & lubed would be the best HHKB in existence...

Yeah, I really love hasu's controller. :)  I haven't really had time to experiment with keymappings other than the SpaceFN layout which was included with the firmware zip.  So I'm pretty much using the default HHKB layout, except that I'm still having trouble hitting Home/End when I need them.

For Bluetooth, I'm using a Sparkfun battery that hasu recommended.  Battery life has been pretty good so far, although I haven't really been keeping tabs since I use my laptop for a couple of hours at a time here and there.  hasu mentioned about 8 hours, I think, but it seems to be longer than that?

I would love an alu case, but my main usage for an HHKB is plunking it down on top of a laptop, and an alu case would probably be too unwieldy and might scratch up my laptop.  Also, I don't know about Bluetooth's limitations, but I remember GON added BT support to his boards, but he mentioned BT would only work with his plastic cases and not the metal ones.

Enviro is one of my favorites. :)  I should be getting an Eyeland T soon to go with this one. :)

Thanks byker. My potato pix sucked though. I thought putting it near the window with the afternoon soon here would make it look good but the caps became too washed out.

Here's another one where I reduce the white balance (I am just using iPhone so it's a software adjustment). At least this is better.

Yep. He threw it in with the last sale as a freebie in my package. I was quite surprised. According to him, that single color dolly is one of the earlier ones that he made. It isn't perfect though, since the stem has a small defect. But it still sits very firmly on the Topre switch stem, so in all honesty, that small defect makes absolutely no difference.

THere just seem to be so few of the Topre dollys out there. I believe Joey Quinn also has one (multichromatic), but don't quote me on that. Don't know who else has one.

Sorry about your space bar though :p
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Verrry nice indeed!

Sorry about your space bar though
Lol, thanks rowdy. I thought I'd give it a try, with everyone raving about it all the time. I'll give it a few days and see if I like it.

Finally tracked down a green RF printed set to finish off the design that I wanted to do in the first place!

Very nice!!!!

I didn't know there is a Topre Dolly!!! My eyes zoomed in to that spot in your photo.

I also have one.  :)

Since I don't have photos of it on a board ( :O ), I'll link you to the post I made just now in the Nubs media thread.  ;)
